The Aloof and Pure-hearted Killer: She Said She Likes Me
The “like” that Yuyi Yue spoke of definitely didn’t mean the same thing as what he understood.
Fang Xun’gui forcibly regained his composure with this reasoning.
He blinked his dry eyes rapidly and said in a hoarse voice:
“You shouldn’t say the word ‘like’ so casually.”
Yuyi Yue’s gaze remained relentless, and this time it was her turn to be curious:
“Why not?”
“The ‘like’ you understand is different from what others mean. You… saying you like me is because you think I’m a good person, and I’m grateful you think that way. But calling this ‘like’ is somewhat inappropriate.”
Yuyi Yue stared intently at Fang Xun’gui’s repeatedly evasive eyes, waiting for his next rebuttal.
Fang Xun’gui could only swallow hard and continue explaining:
“In the eyes of the world, what you just said is practically… like a confession. I know you don’t mean it that way, but…”
“But that’s exactly what I mean.”
Yuyi Yue interrupted Fang Xun’gui.
Propping her uninjured hand against her cheek, she tilted her head and looked at Fang Xun’gui:
“What else could it mean?”
Fang Xun’gui was completely speechless.
He suspected Yuyi Yue not only didn’t understand “like,” but also didn’t know what “confession” meant.
In the end, he was the one left in distress.
“You think I’m a good person, you’re kind-hearted, you don’t want me to suffer, you pity me and feel sorry for me, so you taught me how to treat my wounds.”
Fang Xun’gui finished quickly, still not daring to look into Yuyi Yue’s eyes, only asking with his face turned aside:
“That’s what you meant, right?”
Yuyi Yue listened quietly, then shook her head without hesitation and said firmly:
“I really like you, the kind of like you don’t dare to admit.”
Once again, Yuyi Yue shattered all of Fang Xun’gui’s defenses with just one simple sentence.
Fang Xun’gui quickly turned his head, trying to understand what Yuyi Yue meant by her last statement.
The kind of like he didn’t dare to admit? What didn’t he dare to admit?
This time, before Fang Xun’gui could ask, Yuyi Yue had already provided the answer:
“And you like me too, although I don’t know why you deliberately hide it in front of me, I can tell. I’m pretty good at reading people.”
Yuyi Yue smiled with crescent-shaped eyes:
“Master treats so many good people every year and feeds so many bad people to the Gu Insects. Everyone tries not to show their true feelings on their faces. To distinguish between good and bad people, I spent a long time learning to read people’s hearts. Looking at your expression now, I think I read it correctly.”
Panic flashed in Fang Xun’gui’s eyes. His mouth opened and closed several times before finally pressing into a tight line.
He couldn’t refute it at all.
Yuyi Yue continued:
“Although I don’t know why you don’t want to admit it… well, it’s okay, I don’t mind.
“Master said liking someone is both very happy and very painful. Now it seems you’re suffering because you like me.
“Don’t be so hard on yourself. If it’s painful, then don’t like me. That should be simple… right?”
Yuyi Yue tilted her head and murmured to herself:
“I’ve never tried liking someone before, and I’ve never tried not liking someone either, so I can’t give you more advice. Master told me the human heart is the hardest thing to heal. If you’re hurt because of me, my sin would be too great.”
Fang Xun’gui bit his tongue, forcing himself to regain the strength to speak.
He said:
“Why… why do you say you like me?”Even now, Fang Xun’gui still held a sliver of hope in his heart.
After all, Yuyi Yue’s understanding of emotions came entirely from hearsay. They were merely passing acquaintances—how could she truly “like” someone like him?
He didn’t even consider himself worthy of being called a “person.”
Yuyi Yue pondered for a moment before answering earnestly:
“A long time ago, I asked Master this question. That day outside Misty River, we saw a wedding procession. Master said she hoped it was a story of two people who liked each other finally achieving a happy ending. I asked her, what is liking?
“Master said, liking is when you meet someone who stirs your heart and mind. When you’re with them, you feel at ease and joyful; when they’re not around, you worry and miss them.
“So I think I like you, and you like me too.”
With one turn of phrase, Yuyi Yue reached this conclusion.
It was so abrupt that Fang Xun’gui’s wavering heart abruptly plummeted back into place.
He breathed a sigh of relief, feeling both amused and exasperated.
Yuyi Yue, however, looked utterly bewildered: “What’s wrong?”
Fang Xun’gui didn’t answer. He truly needed some time to sort out his emotions.
Yuyi Yue was still waiting for his response.
Fang Xun’gui really didn’t want to continue the conversation, so he changed the subject:
“You Huo might not have kept your affairs completely secret. This place isn’t safe anymore. You should move somewhere else.”
“I won’t move!”
Fang Xun’gui wasn’t the least bit surprised by this answer.
In just a few short days, Fang Xun’gui felt he had already grasped Yuyi Yue’s way of thinking.
She had a unique way of understanding everything—clear yet simple, and once she set her mind on something, she wouldn’t easily change it.
That was fine too.
Fang Xun’gui stood up and said in an unwavering tone:
“If you won’t move, I’ll guard the courtyard for the next few days to make sure no one from Netherworld Hall comes investigating. Also, where did you put You Ye’s body? I’ll go handle it again.”
Yuyi Yue looked up at him and suddenly asked:
“How exactly do you guard outside the courtyard?”
Fang Xun’gui was taken aback by the question:
“What do you mean, how?”
Yuyi Yue’s eyes sparkled as she gestured:
“Well, I read in storybooks that shadow guards or people like that spend all day crouching in trees without coming down, eating and sleeping in the trees… Oh wait, do shadow guards even need to sleep?”
Faced with Yuyi Yue’s overwhelmingly curious gaze, Fang Xun’gui answered helplessly:
“It’s not that exaggerated. I’ll find a suitable corner to conceal myself. As for sleep, without affecting my duties, I can go up to four days without rest.”
Yuyi Yue shook her head repeatedly: “That won’t do! Your body can’t handle that!”
“It’s fine. Four days is enough for me to ensure this place is safe.”
“No, no! If you don’t sleep for four days, you’ll go stupid, won’t you?”
Yuyi Yue shook her head like a rattle drum and said seriously:
“I like you, so I don’t want you to become stupid.”
They were back to this topic again.
Fang Xun’gui rubbed his temples helplessly, thinking of another topic to divert the conversation.
But Yuyi Yue steered it back:
“You still haven’t answered me. What was wrong earlier? After I said I like you and you like me, your expression was so strange. Was I wrong?”
Fang Xun’gui knew very well that with Yuyi Yue bringing up the question a second time, there was no way he could avoid the topic any longer.
The familiar headache began to creep in again. How should he describe the “liking” he understood to Yuyi Yue?
Fang Xun’gui pondered for a long time before finally speaking:
“Liking someone means tying your own life to that person’s, willingly sharing life and death with them from then on, even willing to give up your life for them. What you described earlier is different from the ‘liking’ I understand.”
After saying this, Fang Xun’gui clearly felt an unusual warmth spreading across his cheeks.
He turned his head away, pretending it was the lamplight that had reddened his face.
Fortunately, Yuyi Yue didn’t press further about why he was blushing, instead seriously contemplating Fang Xun’gui’s words.
After a moment, she hesitantly said:
“What you described doesn’t sound like ‘liking,’ does it?
“Master said that if you’re willing to give up your life for someone, that’s love.
“But I haven’t fallen in love with you yet.
“Ah, maybe I will in the future.
“So you should cherish your life more. I don’t want you to die, and I don’t want to die either.”
Yuyi Yue looked at Fang Xun’gui with her usual clear gaze.
She asked:
“Blushing, heart racing. What’s the reason this time?”
Nothing, just once again unable to resist falling for her.
Fang Xun’gui smiled bitterly in his heart, silently answering.
