Chapter 9: The Hunter’s Instinct

Reborn as a Snow Wolf: My Bloodline Ancestor System

A peaceful week passed over Blackfang Forest after the cubs’ first survival lesson.

The snowstorms that had once raged across the Frostfang Mountains had settled into gentle flurries, and the harsh winds became calmer with each passing dawn.

Thick blankets of fresh snow covered the endless valleys, while towering pine trees stood proudly beneath layers of white frost.

Every morning, golden sunlight reflected from the frozen rivers and crystal cliffs, turning the entire mountain range into a breathtaking sea of shimmering diamonds.

It was a scene so beautiful that one could almost forget that countless predators hid within those same snow-covered forests, waiting patiently for the slightest mistake.

Seventeen days had passed since Ash opened his eyes in this unfamiliar world.

Although he was still nothing more than a young Snow Wolf cub, the changes in his body were impossible to ignore.

His once unsteady legs had become noticeably stronger, allowing him to run without stumbling every few steps.

His hearing had sharpened to the point where he could distinguish the flutter of a bird’s wings from the rustling of pine branches, while his sense of smell continued improving with every passing day.

The instincts that had once conflicted with his human memories now worked in perfect harmony, making every movement feel natural.

Ash stood quietly outside the Crystal Cave as the first light of dawn spread across the mountains.

The cold breeze brushed gently against his white fur, carrying hundreds of scents from every direction.

Snow, pine resin, frozen streams, rabbits, mountain goats, wolves, and countless other smells entered his nose before naturally separating inside his mind.

Instead of becoming overwhelmed, he found himself understanding each scent almost instinctively.

He slowly closed his eyes.

The system had remained completely silent throughout the past week.

No missions.

No rewards.

No miraculous treasures.

At first, he had expected something to happen every day after its activation. Instead, the Bloodline Ancestor System behaved more like a patient observer than an overbearing guide.

Ash smiled faintly.

"I understand now."

"You aren’t here to carry me."

"You’re only here to show me the path."

"If I want to survive..."

"I have to walk it myself."

That realization brought him unexpected peace.

Power obtained without effort could disappear just as easily as it came.

But knowledge, experience, and discipline belonged entirely to the one who earned them.

Those things could never be stolen.

Long before the other cubs awoke, Ash quietly left the nursery and entered the open snowfield near the Crystal Cave.

This had become part of his daily routine.

Every morning, while the pack remained asleep, he trained alone.

He began by running across the untouched snow, carefully controlling his breathing with each stride.

The freezing air filled his lungs before escaping in slow, steady breaths. He wasn’t trying to become faster than everyone else.

He was learning control.

After several laps around the clearing, he moved toward a fallen pine tree lying half-buried beneath the snow.

Its trunk had become smooth with ice.

Ash carefully climbed onto it.

His paws slipped once.

Then twice.

Instead of becoming frustrated, he quietly adjusted his posture before trying again.

Little by little, his balance improved.

Each successful step strengthened not only his body but also his confidence.

When he finally reached the end of the log without falling, a quiet sense of satisfaction filled his heart.

There was no audience.

No applause.

Only the crisp morning wind and the silent forest bore witness to his progress.

He climbed down before moving toward another patch of snow.

This time, he practiced stopping.

Rather than charging recklessly, he sprinted several meters before forcing himself to halt as quietly as possible.

Snow scattered beneath his paws.

Too loud.

Again.

The second attempt disturbed less snow.

Again.

Again.

Again.

By the time sunlight reached the clearing, his movements had become noticeably smoother.

The forest itself had become his training ground.

Every tree taught balance.

Every gust of wind tested his senses.

Every step became another lesson.

Ash didn’t realize that he wasn’t alone.

High upon the familiar stone overlooking Blackfang Forest, the Alpha silently watched the young cub.

The great leader said nothing.

His calm sapphire eyes followed Ash’s movements without interruption.

An ordinary cub would still be sleeping beside its mother.

Ash chose to train.

Not because someone ordered him.

But because he desired strength.

The Alpha remained completely still.

He neither praised nor interrupted him.

Sometimes...

Silent observation revealed more than words ever could.

As the morning sun rose higher, the rest of the cubs gradually gathered beneath the supervision of the guardian wolves.

Ash’s energetic brother immediately began chasing drifting snowflakes across the clearing, while the curious cub eagerly sniffed every unfamiliar scent along the path.

His sleepy sister walked lazily beside their mother, yawning every few moments before nearly falling asleep while standing.

Watching them made Ash chuckle inwardly.

"They’re still children."

"And despite my memories..."

"So am I."

Soon, an elder wolf approached from deeper within the forest.

His silver-white fur carried the marks of countless winters, and although age had slowed his movements, wisdom shone clearly within his calm blue eyes.

Every guardian respectfully lowered their heads.

The cubs instinctively gathered around him.

Today’s lesson had begun.

Without speaking immediately, the elder led them away from the Crystal Cave and deeper into Blackfang territory.

The journey itself became part of the lesson.

The cubs crossed frozen streams where crystal-clear water flowed beneath thick layers of ice.

They climbed gentle hills blanketed in untouched snow and passed beneath enormous pine trees whose branches swayed peacefully beneath the winter breeze.

Every corner of the forest seemed alive.

Birds soared high above the mountains.

White rabbits darted between snow-covered bushes.

Foxes left delicate footprints before disappearing into hidden burrows.

The elder eventually stopped within a quiet clearing.

He slowly looked toward every cub before releasing several calm growls.

Perfect Beast Language translated them naturally inside Ash’s mind.

"A careless hunter sees movement."

"A true hunter sees opportunity."

The cubs tilted their heads in confusion.

The elder calmly sat upon the snow.

Then...

He did absolutely nothing.

Several moments passed.

Then several more.

The younger cubs quickly became restless.

Ash’s brother scratched at the snow with his paws.

Another cub chased a butterfly drifting through the cold air.

One even rolled onto its back before lazily staring at the sky.

Ash remained completely still.

If the elder was doing nothing...

Then that itself was the lesson.

He quietly focused upon the surrounding forest.

At first...

Everything seemed peaceful.

Then...

He began noticing details.

A flock of snowbirds suddenly flew away from the western trees without any obvious reason.

A rabbit that had been hopping across the clearing abruptly changed direction before vanishing into dense undergrowth.

Snow unexpectedly fell from one pine tree while every tree around it remained perfectly still.

Far beneath another mound of snow...

Something small shifted.

Ash narrowed his eyes.

There.

A faint movement.

Almost invisible.

The outline of a white fox silently hiding beneath the snow, waiting patiently for prey.

The elder finally smiled.

Without moving from his place, he looked toward Ash.

It seemed...

Someone had understood today’s lesson.

The elder allowed the silence to linger for several more moments before slowly rising to his feet.

His calm blue eyes swept across every cub, pausing briefly on those who had grown restless.

Rather than scolding them, he simply turned toward the forest and continued walking, trusting that experience itself would teach what words could not.

Ash followed closely behind, his mind replaying every small detail he had observed.

He finally understood why the elder had insisted they remain still.

The forest was never truly silent.

Every creature, every gust of wind, and every falling snowflake carried information.

A hunter who rushed through the wilderness would only see trees and snow.

A true hunter learned to read the hidden story unfolding all around him.

The training continued deeper within Blackfang territory until they reached a gentle slope where the snow lay thick and undisturbed. The elder stopped once more before looking toward the cubs.

"This will be your first hunt," his growls conveyed through the language Ash now understood perfectly. "Not for glory. Not to prove your strength. Simply to survive."

The guardian wolves spread out, silently surrounding the clearing to ensure no dangerous predator approached.

They would not interfere unless a cub’s life was in danger.

Every lesson in Blackfang carried risk, because survival itself was never without danger.

The elder lowered his nose toward the snow.

"Beneath this field live snow mice. Small. Fast. Easily frightened."

He looked at the cubs one by one.

"Catch one."

Excitement immediately spread among the young wolves.

Ash’s energetic brother charged forward before the elder had even finished speaking, pouncing wildly from one patch of snow to another.

Several other cubs copied him, digging frantically and scattering snow in every direction.

Tiny squeaks echoed beneath the frozen ground, but every frightened mouse escaped long before the clumsy paws could reach it.

The young guardian sighed softly but allowed the lesson to continue.

Ash remained where he was.

He closed his eyes.

The elder’s words echoed within his heart.

A careless hunter sees movement... A true hunter sees opportunity.

Instead of chasing every sound, Ash simply listened.

The cold wind brushed across his fur.

Snowflakes drifted gently through the air.

Somewhere nearby, a woodpecker tapped rhythmically against an ancient pine.

Then...

A faint scratching sound reached his ears.

His nose twitched.

There.

A weak scent hidden beneath layers of snow.

Tiny.

Warm.

Alive.

A snow mouse.

Ash slowly adjusted his body, lowering himself until his belly almost touched the snow. Every movement became deliberate. His breathing slowed. Even his tail remained perfectly still.

Several heartbeats passed.

The scratching grew louder.

Without warning...

The snow beneath him shifted ever so slightly.

Ash moved.

His body exploded forward in one smooth motion. His front paws struck the snow while his jaws snapped shut a heartbeat later.

For a brief moment...

Everything became still.

Then Ash slowly lifted his head.

A tiny snow mouse rested gently between his teeth.

Its struggle had already ended.

The clearing fell silent.

Even the other cubs stopped moving to stare at him.

Ash looked quietly at the small creature.

During his previous life, he had purchased meat from supermarkets without giving much thought to where it came from. Life and death had always been distant concepts hidden behind convenience.

Now...

He had taken a life with his own paws.

There was no excitement.

No pride.

Only understanding.

He lowered his head respectfully.

"Thank you," he whispered silently within his heart.

"Your life will allow mine to continue."

The elder watched everything without interrupting.

A faint smile appeared upon his aged face.

He walked toward Ash before speaking calmly.

"A hunter who respects life..."

"...never wastes it."

Ash nodded quietly.

He understood.

Predators hunted because they needed to live.

Cruelty and survival were not the same thing.

The lesson ended shortly afterward, and the guardian wolves guided the exhausted cubs back toward the Crystal Cave. The sun had already begun descending behind the Frostfang Mountains, painting the endless snowfields in warm shades of gold and crimson.

Inside the nursery, Ash placed the small snow mouse before his mother.

She gently nudged it back toward him.

It was his catch.

His reward.

Ash hesitated only briefly before tearing away a small piece and placing it before each of his siblings.

His energetic brother immediately devoured his share, while the sleepy sister blinked in surprise before happily accepting it.

Even the curious cub wagged his tail excitedly.

Watching their simple happiness made Ash smile.

He didn’t need everything for himself.

Family shared what they had.

From the entrance of the Crystal Cave, another pair of eyes quietly observed the scene.

The Alpha.

His expression remained calm as always, yet something warm flickered within his gaze.

An elder standing beside him noticed the faint change.

"The white cub hunted well."

The Alpha slowly nodded.

"He did."

"But that isn’t what caught my attention."

The elder looked toward Ash again.

"What do you mean?"

The Alpha’s gaze remained fixed upon the young cub surrounded by his siblings.

"Strength earns respect."

His voice remained steady.

"But kindness earns loyalty."

"The one who remembers his family after tasting success..."

"...will never fight only for himself."

The elder lowered his head thoughtfully.

He finally understood why the Alpha continued watching the young cub so closely.

Far beyond the northern mountains, where the forests gave way to frozen plains, another gathering was taking place beneath the pale evening sky.

The massive Ice Bear Chieftain stood upon a ridge overlooking Blackfang territory.

Several enormous bears knelt before him after completing their reconnaissance.

One stepped forward.

"The wolves have lowered their guard after the last battle."

Another added, "Their cubs have begun leaving the cave."

The Chieftain’s crimson eyes narrowed.

"Good."

He did not order an attack.

Not yet.

Instead, he calmly gave another command.

"Watch them."

"Learn their movements."

"Wait."

"The greatest revenge belongs to those who strike when hope has returned."

One by one, the Ice Bears disappeared into the snowy wilderness, silently surrounding Blackfang from afar.

The war had not begun.

Yet its shadows had already reached the forest.

Night gradually embraced the Frostfang Mountains once again.

After eating with his family, Ash quietly slipped outside the Crystal Cave.

The moon hung peacefully above the endless sea of snow.

He summoned the transparent blue screen before his eyes.

Name: Ash

Nothing remarkable had changed.

No sudden increase in strength.

No miraculous evolution.

Yet...

Ash smiled.

The greatest change wasn’t written on the screen.

It was within himself.

He was no longer the confused human who had awakened inside a wolf’s body.

Nor was he simply surviving each day.

He had taken his first prey.

Learned his first lessons.

Earned his first recognition.

Looking toward the moonlit sky, he whispered quietly,

"I’ve finally taken my first step."

"I’m no longer just surviving..."

"I’m becoming a hunter."

As though responding to his quiet determination, the blue screen rippled once before a new notification appeared.

Hidden Quest Triggered

Become an Official Hunter of the Blackfang Pack

Current Progress: 3%

Ash’s eyes lingered on the words for several moments before the screen slowly faded into the darkness.

He didn’t smile because of the quest.

He smiled because every bit of progress reflected his own effort.

Far beyond the northern horizon, unseen beneath the endless snowfall, crimson eyes silently watched Blackfang Forest.

The peaceful days of the pack were drawing to an end.

To be continued....
