When Fang Siyue opened the door, she saw Song Yuntang inside, and the smile on her face vanished instantly.
She spoke harshly, her tone accusatory. “Tsk, where did this rural wild girl come from? How are you in Brother Weicheng’s office? This is the Military Office—this isn’t a place you can just walk into! Get out immediately!”
Song Yuntang felt the hostility radiating from her. She let out a scoff and shot back.
“And who are you? I see you’re not wearing a uniform either. You’re not military. If you know this is the Military Office, how come you could just stroll in? —Don’t tell me you’re a thief here to steal classified files?”
Fang Siyue’s face flushed with anger, and she snapped, “Who are you calling a thief! I’m Brother Weicheng’s fiancée, soon to be his official fiancée. I came specifically to deliver his meal!”
Fang Siyue, daughter of the Military District Political Commissar, had been doted on in the Beijing Military District compound her whole life. She wasn’t used to being noticed like this.
Moreover, the Song Yuntang she saw was wearing tattered clothes, filthy all over, emaciated and sallow, with no redeeming features. Normally, such a person wouldn’t even deserve to speak to her, let alone appear in Fu Weicheng’s office. She was furious!
Fiancée?
Song Yuntang’s eyes narrowed slightly. She looked Fang Siyue over again. Spoiled, arrogant, and unreasonable—but her eyes were on top of her head. Aside from that, she wasn’t unattractive.
Fu Weicheng already had a fiancée and still didn’t want a divorce?
Truly a scumbag.
Song Yuntang muttered the thought inwardly, but seeing Fang Siyue’s high-and-mighty demeanor, she didn’t plan to reveal the truth.
Crossing her arms, Song Yuntang spoke again. “So you’re Fu Weicheng’s fiancée. Don’t you know he’s already married?”
“Of course I know,” Fang Siyue scoffed, dripping with disdain. “So what if he’s married? Even if he is, he’s the most promising young officer in the whole Military District. Besides, Brother Weicheng’s wife is long dead. Hmph! A rural wild girl trying to latch onto him—she deserved to die early!”
Song Yuntang had just been insulted in person—and “deserved to die early” at that.
Anger flared in her chest, but she remained outwardly calm, continuing to question Fang Siyue.
“Do you even know who I am?”
“I don’t care who you are! This isn’t a place for you—get out!”
Fang Siyue gritted her teeth in frustration. She had pursued Fu Weicheng for so long, never once coming near his office. Today, she had sneaked in, and yet this woman could sit there openly? And this was the first time another woman had appeared near Fu Weicheng.
A woman’s instincts were usually sharp, and instincts about rivals were sharper.
Fang Siyue sensed that Song Yuntang would be a major problem and needed to be removed quickly.
As the two faced off, Song Yuntang noticed Fu Weicheng appearing in the doorway and immediately got an idea.
Her expression changed in an instant. She smiled sweetly, her voice dripping with charm: “Husband~”
In that moment, Fu Weicheng, just outside the door, froze. His body stiffened slightly, eyes widening in disbelief.
Song Yuntang strode over, not content with merely calling him “Husband,” she hooked his arm with a delicate, dependent gesture, leaning on his side like a little bird.
Clang!
The lunchbox in Fang Siyue’s hand fell to the floor. She stared in disbelief, eyes darting between Song Yuntang and Fu Weicheng, nearly popping out of her sockets.
“You—you—you just called him what?”
“Husband,” Song Yuntang said matter-of-factly, smiling as she introduced herself. “I am the rural wife you said ‘deserved to die early.’ Sorry, I’m not dead yet. Looks like you can’t be his fiancée after all.”
Fang Siyue turned red with rage, nearly hopping in place.
Fu Weicheng’s brows knit tightly. “Deserved to die early… rural wife…” He had finally realized what had just happened.
Fang Siyue didn’t believe Song Yuntang. “I don’t believe you! You’re lying! She’s been dead for years! How could you be Brother Weicheng’s wife? Brother Weicheng, speak up—”
“That’s enough.” Fu Weicheng’s low voice cut through coldly. His dark eyes glared at Fang Siyue, expression stern. “Comrade Fang, I terminated our engagement a month ago. You are no longer my fiancée. Know your place.”
“She is indeed my wife, Song Yuntang. The events from the past involved some misunderstandings, which my wife and I will handle. You are an outsider with no right to interfere or speak ill of my wife. If I hear such words from you again, don’t blame me for being impolite.”
“This is the Military Office. Comrade Fang, you shouldn’t be here. Please leave.”
Fu Weicheng’s voice was as cold as an ice pit. Even Song Yuntang shivered slightly at its intensity. When he became fierce, he was truly intimidating—and he had been relatively gentle with her.
Fang Siyue, who had been shouting at Song Yuntang to leave, suddenly realized it was Fu Weicheng telling her to leave. Her face drained of color. She stood frozen, gritting her teeth in frustration.
Fu Weicheng continued, his voice stern: “Do you want me to call the guards to escort you out?”
That wasn’t a request—it was an order.
Fang Siyue stomped angrily, unwilling to leave, but had no choice. As she turned to go, she shot Song Yuntang a venomous glare.
Song Yuntang raised an eyebrow, meeting her eyes with a teasing look.
Once Fang Siyue was gone, Song Yuntang quickly withdrew her hand from Fu Weicheng’s arm. Fu Weicheng glanced down at the empty space, frowning. There were still many issues to resolve between them.
“We…”
“Fu Weicheng, so that’s why you don’t want a divorce.”
Song Yuntang’s eyes lit with realization.
Fu Weicheng froze. “What?”
Song Yuntang pointed to the direction Fang Siyue had left and patted Fu Weicheng’s shoulder. “That woman you don’t like, but can’t shake off—so you need a shield. Am I right?”
Fu Weicheng lowered his gaze, locking eyes with Song Yuntang as his mind raced.
It was indeed a suitable reason—enough to keep Song Yuntang from divorcing for the time being.
He nodded. “Yes.”
Song Yuntang thought further. She had just arrived in the capital and wasn’t fully settled. Fu Weicheng’s previous reasoning made sense: divorce proceedings for a military marriage were difficult and slow, and given his position, it could take over half a year.
Given the previous explanation, Fu Weicheng wasn’t truly at fault back then. He had done everything he could and should not be stripped of his identity as the father of two children.
“Fu Weicheng, before the divorce is officially approved, we won’t announce it. I can be your shield, and it will also give you time with the children.”
Fu Weicheng wasn’t entirely satisfied, but he breathed a small sigh of relief. At least Song Yuntang had been temporarily appeased.
“Niannian and An’an should be awake. Let’s go check on them.”
They walked to the lounge. Niannian and An’an had just woken up. Seeing an unfamiliar environment and missing familiar faces, An’an’s eyes welled with tears, and Niannian grew tense.
When Song Yuntang appeared, the two children cried out, “Mommy—” their small voices breaking into sobs, tugging at one’s heartstrings.
“My good babies, don’t cry, don’t cry. Mommy’s back!”
Song Yuntang hugged Niannian and An’an tightly, kissing their little faces, soothing them gently. In contrast to her earlier confrontation with Fang Siyue, she was a completely different person.
After calming the children, Fu Weicheng and Song Yuntang left the military building, heading in another direction.
Niannian asked, confused, “Mommy, where are we going?”
Song Yuntang guessed, “To the guesthouse. We need a place to sleep. There are beds there—we can stay overnight—”
“No, not the guesthouse.” Fu Weicheng interrupted. “We’re going to the Family Quarters.”
Niannian and An’an didn’t understand what the Family Quarters were. Song Yuntang was slightly surprised—so soon? They’d be living together?
But since she had agreed to be Fu Weicheng’s shield and they were still married, living together wasn’t unusual.
Fu Weicheng watched Song Yuntang’s reaction. Seeing her nod, he explained to the children, “Mommy misspoke earlier. We’re not going to the guesthouse. We’re going to the Family Quarters.”
“Mommy, what’s the Family Quarters? Is it better than the barn we live in? Does it have a roof?”
Fu Weicheng clenched his hands secretly. His wife and children had been living in a barn?!
…
Meanwhile, in the military building, Commander He picked up the phone and had the operator connect a number. A voice answered quickly.
He spoke cheerfully, “Old Fu, do you know who I saw on the train today? …It was your wife! Not dead at all! She’s doing very well… and she even gave you two grandchildren… Yep, she must have suffered a lot over the years and is now demanding a divorce from Weicheng…”
