Zhu Queqi continued pouring out sweet words. When she looked up and saw that Gu Ansheng’s expression still hadn’t softened, she quickly added more.
“Ansheng, look at me. I rushed here early today just to see you. From morning until now I haven’t eaten a single bite. My stomach is completely empty.”
As she spoke, she grabbed his hand and guided it toward her lower abdomen.
Gu Ansheng’s face remained expressionless, but the tips of his ears quietly turned a faint shade of red. Zhu Queqi didn’t notice the subtle change. She was secretly puzzled—her usual tricks that never failed before were surprisingly ineffective today.
Looks like she needed to try harder.
“Ansheng, I really regret it. After you left that day, I cried so miserably. I didn’t even eat dinner. If you don’t believe me, then come home with me right now and ask my parents yourself. Ask them if what I’m saying is true—whether I’m lying or not.”
She sniffed softly, tears glimmering in her eyes as she continued in a pitiful voice:
“Ansheng, I really regret it. Whatever I said to you that day—you should take it all the opposite way. None of that was what I truly meant. Please forgive me. Let’s get back together, okay? Please? I’ve missed you so, so much these past couple of days. Do you know how long I spent on the bus this morning? It was such a long ride! And since I hadn’t eaten breakfast, my legs felt weak when I got off. I almost fell over. I didn’t even wait to recover—I came straight to your house. But before I even went inside, I saw you chatting and laughing with some woman I didn’t recognize. Do you know how awful I felt at that moment? I wished I had no ears, no eyes! I originally planned to sneak away quietly so I wouldn’t disturb you—but you stopped me and wouldn’t let me leave. You made me stay and watch how happy you were together…”
“When did I ever chat and laugh with another woman?” Gu Ansheng suddenly interrupted.
Zhu Queqi nearly choked on her own saliva.
She had said so much—and that was the part he focused on?
Never mind. She pretended she hadn’t heard him and continued with pursed lips:
“Watching you two talking so happily, my heart hurt so badly I could barely breathe…”
“So you weren’t actually asleep earlier—you fainted from lack of oxygen?” Gu Ansheng responded again calmly, precisely poking holes in her story.
Zhu Queqi was completely thrown off.
What was wrong with him today? Why was he arguing with her over everything?
The tears she had just managed to gather were instantly forced back.
“Hehe… didn’t I just say earlier? I woke up too early this morning and didn’t sleep well,” she said awkwardly, forcing a laugh. Her face shifted between red and pale.
Clearing her throat to ease the embarrassment, she secretly glanced at Gu Ansheng.
He looked much better than when she had first arrived. The unfamiliar coldness on his face had faded. If she looked carefully, she could even see the corner of his lips lifting slightly.
There’s hope!
Encouraged, Zhu Queqi clenched her teeth and decided to go all in.
She pulled Gu Ansheng over to the bed and pushed him down onto the edge of it. Then she moved as if to sit directly on his lap.
Seeing what she was about to do, Gu Ansheng reacted instantly. He grabbed her slender waist and stopped her halfway, refusing to let her sit.
His handsome face flushed bright red like a burning cloud as his eyes quickly darted toward the doorway.
Following his gaze, Zhu Queqi suddenly remembered— the door had never been closed after he opened it earlier!
Fortunately, Gu Ansheng’s mother and sister-in-law had gone out to see the guests off and hadn’t come back yet.
Zhu Queqi hurried over, shut the door, slid the latch into place, and even pulled the curtains closed for good measure.
Only then—under Gu Ansheng’s silent acquiescence—did Zhu Queqi finally sit down on his lap with satisfaction.
Afraid she might fall, Gu Ansheng held out for only a few seconds before instinctively wrapping his arms tightly around her waist.
Although he still hadn’t said anything, Zhu Queqi knew his anger had already faded.
What she didn’t know, however, was that Gu Ansheng had never truly been angry with her at all.
Even on the day she broke up with him, he hadn’t hated her. He had simply been overwhelmed by panic and helplessness, which made him appear furious when in reality he just didn’t know how to react.
Just like today.
From the very moment he saw Zhu Queqi again, even though he couldn’t guess why she had come, his heart had already burst with joy.
But that joy was quickly followed by fear.
He was afraid she had come to return more things he had once given her.
Afraid that the two of them really might never have another chance.
The harsh words he had said earlier had slipped out in a moment of impulse. The instant he said them, he regretted it.
It felt as if an invisible hand had clutched his throat, making it impossible to breathe. In his mind he kept silently praying that she wouldn’t take those words seriously… praying that she wouldn’t leave.
Unable to risk it, he had asked her to stay.
Thankfully, she had listened.
She hadn’t left.
Back on Zhu Queqi’s side, once she realized Gu Ansheng had forgiven her, she started becoming restless again.
She leaned closer to him, resting her head against his shoulder and neck, gently rubbing against him as if seeking comfort.
Her voice turned soft and sweet, overflowing with affectionate words as if they cost nothing.
Poor Gu Ansheng suffered greatly from it.
He tried so hard to endure that the veins on his hands were starting to bulge. Swallowing, he suppressed the restless heat in his chest and pretended to sound fierce as he said:
“Alright. Get up already!”
