Lu Zhiyu paused, confused. “Yeah. My mom asked me to bring him something. Why…?”
A spark lit up in Xu Wanning’s eyes.
“Can I come with you?”
Lu Zhiyu readily agreed. “Sure. And when we get back, let’s try the new mala-tang place outside the school gate. I heard it’s really good.”
Xu Wanning smiled and nodded.
“Okay.”
A’Yue, wait for me.
After washing up, the four girls headed to the cafeteria.
Xu Wanning spent the entire time on her phone. She only had three months left to stockpile supplies before the apocalypse. Right now, the most important thing was making money. The little savings she had wouldn’t be nearly enough.
She needed cash.
All the designer handbags, jewelry, limited-edition clothes, and luxury watches she had bought over the years had to go.
“Wanning, what are you doing?” Song Yunqing leaned over to peek at her screen.
Xu Wanning put down her phone. “Selling my bags, jewelry, clothes, and watches. I need more money.”
Wen Shuyao nearly choked on her food.
“You’re serious? Wouldn’t it be enough to stock up on instant noodles, bottled water, and bread? I’ve already spent this month’s allowance on supplies. That’s enough food for at least three months.”
Song Yunqing also looked unconvinced.
“Those are limited editions. People fight to get their hands on them. You’re really selling them?”
Xu Wanning gave a bitter smile.
“When the apocalypse comes, none of that will matter. They won’t be worth anything. People will steal them without a second thought. A designer bag won’t even be as valuable as a pack of instant noodles.”
After thinking it over, Lu Zhiyu immediately pulled out her own phone and started listing her handbags, jewelry, clothes, and watches for sale as well.
Whether the apocalypse came or not, there was no downside. If nothing happened, she could always buy new ones later.
Seeing Lu Zhiyu join in, Song Yunqing hesitated for a moment before taking out her phone and doing the same.
Wen Shuyao looked utterly defeated.
“You people are insane.”
Even so, she reluctantly pulled out her phone and began listing her prized possessions too.
Xu Wanning looked at her three friends one by one.
How lucky was she to have friends willing to go crazy alongside her?
If only her spatial ability had returned as well. One demonstration would have been enough to convince them completely.
Just as the thought crossed her mind, the tray in her hands suddenly vanished.
The other three froze mid-bite.
They stared at the empty table for several seconds before slowly lifting their heads to look at Xu Wanning.
They clearly expected an explanation.
Xu Wanning sighed.
Honestly, she wished everything was fake too. Maybe it had all been a dream. Maybe there wouldn’t be an apocalypse this time.
But her spatial ability had returned with her.
That meant the apocalypse was coming.
With a flick of her wrist, the tray reappeared.
“An ability,” she explained. “A spatial ability. After the apocalypse, some people mutated into zombies. Some awakened supernatural powers. Most people remained ordinary.”
Lu Zhiyu immediately put down her chopsticks.
“I’m calling my parents. They need to prepare some liquid assets.”
Song Yunqing hurriedly opened WeChat.
“Waaah! I don’t want to die!”
Wen Shuyao shot to her feet so abruptly that her chair scraped loudly across the floor.
“So Jiang Lei really kills me, then?!”
Her voice echoed through the entire cafeteria.
Everyone turned to look at her—including Xu Wanning and the others.
Lu Zhiyu quickly pulled her back into her seat and smiled awkwardly at the surrounding students.
“Haha, we’re playing a murder mystery game. Hehe.”
The crowd stared blankly before losing interest.
As long as they weren’t dealing with lunatics.
Wen Shuyao gritted her teeth.
“That scumbag! I knew he was no good!”
Xu Wanning blinked in surprise.
Something about this development felt wrong.
In her previous life, Jiang Lei had hurt Wen Shuyao over and over again, using her belongings to play the hero and earn praise from others.
The three of them had spent ages trying to persuade her to break up with him, but she never listened.
And now, just because she had seen the spatial ability with her own eyes, she was cured of her love-struck blindness?
Song Yunqing timidly raised a hand.
“Didn’t you always say Jiang Lei loved you so much he’d rather die than let zombies hurt you? What changed?”
Wen Shuyao slammed her hand on the table.
“That’s because I thought Wanning was having some crazy dream! But what we just saw? The tray went poof! It’s real! Which means everything she said is real! That scumbag really got me killed!”
Xu Wanning exchanged a glance with Lu Zhiyu.
Both of them saw the same thing in each other’s eyes:
Relief.
The hopeless lovesick fool had finally recovered.
Wen Shuyao’s hands trembled as she grabbed her phone.
“Forget talking. I need to call my parents and tell them to sell the house and cars and fly over immediately.”
Xu Wanning stopped her.
“If you suddenly tell them to sell everything, why would they agree?”
Wen Shuyao’s eyes turned red.
“What if I tell them I’ve been kidnapped and the kidnappers want ransom money?”
Xu Wanning shook her head.
“That’s a terrible idea. It’ll probably bring the police.”
Deflated, Wen Shuyao lowered her phone.
“Then what do we do? If they stay so far away and the apocalypse really comes, how can we save them?”
Her voice trembled.
“Did they survive in the previous life?”
Xu Wanning’s nose stung.
She shook her head.
“No. They all died.”
Tears instantly welled up in Wen Shuyao’s and Song Yunqing’s eyes.
“What are we supposed to do now?” they cried.
Lu Zhiyu adjusted her glasses thoughtfully.
“How about we tell them to come here for a vacation? Labor Day is coming up. Get them here first. As for the houses and properties, we can quietly list them with real estate agents. There should still be enough time.”
“Good idea.”
All four immediately started calling home.
Xu Wanning’s mother answered almost instantly.
“Wanning? Why are you calling at this hour?”
Xu Wanning’s eyes reddened. She fought hard to suppress the tears threatening to spill over.
“Mom, my roommates want all of our parents to come visit during Labor Day. Their parents already agreed. Can you and Dad come too? Otherwise I’ll be the only one whose parents aren’t here. That’s so sad.”
The moment Mother Xu heard that all the other parents had already agreed, she couldn’t bring herself to refuse.
“Of course. We’ll come. I’ll have your father book the tickets right away. We’ll arrive on April 30th.”
“Okay. Love you, Mom.”
Xu Wanning smiled and hung up.
Using the same strategy, Lu Zhiyu, Song Yunqing, and Wen Shuyao successfully convinced their parents to come as well.
Xu Wanning opened her banking app and showed the balance.
“I have two hundred thousand yuan available right now. How much do you all have?”
“One hundred fifty thousand,” Lu Zhiyu replied.
Song Yunqing gave an awkward laugh.
“Ten thousand.”
The other three turned to stare at her.
“Where’s the rest of your money?”
Song Yunqing looked like she was about to cry.
“I spent it on bags and clothes. I just finished spending everything. This is basically my living allowance. Please adopt me!”
Wen Shuyao slapped her phone onto the table.
“I have one million five hundred thousand.”
Song Yunqing immediately threw herself at her.
“Sister! From this day forward, I belong to you!”
Xu Wanning looked puzzled.
“Shuyao, where did you get that much money? Aren’t our families about the same financially?”
Wen Shuyao lifted her chin proudly.
“My grandpa left it for me. He was worried my parents might not treat me well, so he secretly set aside money for me years ago. It’s been sitting in the bank ever since.”
Song Yunqing rubbed against her shoulder dramatically.
“Thank you, our dear grandpa!”
