“Damn it, sooner or later I’m going to kill those two brats…” Inside the lakeside cabin, Kenneth leaned against the sofa, feeling a dull ache at the back of his head, while cursing Brian and Sarah, who were long gone.

His wife, Kathy, was caring for him nearby, but hearing her husband’s words, she just sat silently to the side without saying anything.

When Kenneth returned here in such a sorry state, claiming that the two children had ambushed him from behind and stolen his handgun, everyone except the two children actually knew the real purpose of his outing.Full novel: Reborn in The Last of Us — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

But when Kathy heard that the handgun had been taken by Brian and the others, a wave of irrepressible resentment welled up in her heart—resentment at her husband’s incompetence and at Brian and the others for taking the gun, because she knew that in these chaotic times, only a gun could protect her children.

“There’s a car coming, stay alert!” Just as she was about to say something, Taylor’s shouting suddenly came from outside the house.

Hearing this, both of them jolted, exchanged a glance, quickly grabbed two usable weapons nearby, and rushed out the door.

Outside the house, Taylor stood by the fence, watching the approaching vehicle from afar with a nervous face and a sense of unease.

He turned his head to look at his wife, who was shielding the two children behind her, then looked at the gun in his hand, feeling quite helpless.

Kenneth’s gun was gone, so the only handgun in this place was the one in his hand.

If these people had ill intentions, it would be extremely difficult to protect his wife and children with just this one gun.

“What’s going on?

Who’s coming!” While Taylor was lost in thought, Kenneth and Kathy rushed out from inside the house, weapons in hand.

They quickly ran to the fence, saw the vehicle not far away, and their expressions soured.

Everyone present watched the approaching vehicle anxiously, but as it got closer, their expressions became increasingly excited because they saw that the vehicle coming from afar was clearly a Military truck.

“It’s the Military!

They’ve come to save us!” Kenneth, who was the first to notice, roared with excitement, waving his hands continuously at the car in front to show a strong welcome.

The group behind him all felt a sense of surviving a disaster.

Taylor turned around and hugged his crying wife.

Kathy was also full of joy.

Barton and Angela, seemingly Infected by the emotions of the people around them, both showed very happy smiles.

A few minutes later, the vehicle slowly stopped outside the fence.

A dozen fully armed Soldiers jumped down from the back of the truck, and the passenger door also opened, with a man in combat gear jumping out.

He walked up to the group with a serious face and said loudly, “We are from the National Disaster Rescue Operation Team.

Are there any other Survivors nearby?” “No, none at all, Officer.

There’s only us here.

Are you taking us to a safe place?” Hearing that they were indeed here for rescue, Kenneth quickly stepped forward to answer fawningly, taking the opportunity to ask where they would be taken next.

“Rest assured, as long as you follow instructions, we will take you to a very safe place!” The man heard the words, looked at that fawning face, and a look of disgust flashed in his eyes.

Then, as if remembering something, a mocking smile appeared on the corner of his mouth, and he answered Kenneth’s question with a meaningful tone.

Then he waved to the Soldiers behind him and said to the Survivors in front of him, “According to regulations, we will search you and confiscate any Firearms you possess, after which we will take you to the settlement.” Seeing this, although the group felt some dissatisfaction, the urgent desire to leave this place suppressed their discontent for the time being, and they let the incoming Soldiers search them.

A moment later, one of the Soldiers came to the man’s side and reported, “Report, Officer, they only have one handgun on them, and no other dangerous items.” “Hmm, then…” The man nodded and was about to speak when Kenneth, standing opposite him, took another step forward, clasped his hands together, and interrupted, “Officer, can we get on the road now?” “Get on the road?” Looking at the person who had interrupted him, the man’s expression was extremely displeased.

A look of contempt appeared on the corner of his mouth, and he said, “Heh, then let me send you on your way first!” Having said that, the man immediately drew the handgun from his waist, aimed the muzzle at Kenneth’s head, and without hesitation, pulled the trigger under the other’s terrified gaze.

“Bang!” The bullet shot out from the muzzle, instantly piercing Kenneth’s skull and leaving a deep, bloody hole in his forehead.

His body fell backward powerlessly, devoid of any signs of life.

The rest of the people were frozen in place, terrified by the scene before them.

They all looked at the man holding the handgun high in disbelief, their moods feeling as if they had instantly plummeted from heaven to hell, their eyes filled with fear.

“Bastard, what are you doing!” The first to react was Kenneth’s wife, Kathy.

Looking at her husband’s corpse lying on the ground, she angrily questioned the man loudly.

“Finish them off.” The man, however, paid no attention to Kathy’s questioning and turned to walk toward the passenger side of the truck.

After he turned around, the Soldier next to him raised his rifle.

Regardless of how these people cried, begged for mercy, or questioned the reason, he ruthlessly pulled the trigger, firing wildly at the Survivors.

Even though there were women and children among them, there was not the slightest ripple in his eyes.

By the fence, the people who were alive just moments ago turned into corpses on the ground in the blink of an eye.

Blood poured continuously from the bullet wounds on their bodies, emitting an incredibly thick, bloody stench.

After finishing everything, the Soldier stepped forward to confirm that everyone was dead, then turned and returned to the back of the truck.

The truck then slowly turned around, drove in the direction it had come from, and gradually disappeared on the distant horizon.

…

Throwing the last corpse of an Infected outside the Factory door, Brian wiped the sweat from his forehead.

Looking at the pile of bodies in front of him, he put his hands on his hips and let out a long sigh.

It was near dusk, and there wasn’t much time left before dark.

He looked around and then turned back into the Factory.

In the Factory office, the desk had long been moved aside.

There was a shallow hidden compartment on the floor, and Sarah was squatting nearby, taking the things inside out one by one.

Brian took a look.

Inside were quite a few supplies: food, handguns, bullets, and even a first-aid kit.

This took him by surprise: “I didn’t expect that Ford left behind so much stuff.

I wonder what kind of relationship he and that Morris had.” “Who cares!” Not caring at all about the relationship between the two, Sarah looked at the supplies piled all over the floor.

She excitedly spread her arms wide and shouted happily, “Now all of this is ours!” Seeing the girl’s happy look, a smile also rose to the corner of Brian’s mouth.

He smiled and said, “Then I’ll leave this to you.

I’m going to go check on that car.” Leaving the office, he walked toward the northwest corner of the Factory.

The place where the car was parked was very strategic—parked sideways against the side of the Factory, the car only needed to make one turn to reach the door directly.

There were obstructions on both sides, and combined with the fact that it wasn’t very bright around there, it couldn’t be easily discovered, not to mention that there was a lock on the wheel.

Walking to the car, Brian squatted down, entered the password, unlocked the wheel lock, then opened the driver’s side door and sat in.

He hadn’t driven a car in a long time since coming to this world, and they would likely have a long journey tomorrow, so he planned to get inside early to familiarize himself with it.

Starting the car, he found the gas tank was full.

He checked other areas, and there were no problems.

Only then did he press the clutch and brake, turn the steering wheel, and drive out of the Factory.

After driving around the pile of abandoned cars a few times, Brian saw that it was getting dark, so he reversed the car into the Factory and parked it at the doorway.

This way, they could drive directly out of the Factory when they set off tomorrow.

Afterward, he helped Sarah stuff all the supplies into cardboard boxes taken from the shelves and moved them into the back of the car one by one.

Busy until late at night, after everything was handled, although there was a rest room in the Factory, fearing that some other unexpected situation might occur, Brian and Sarah simply moved the mattress next to the car, intending to sleep while guarding it.

In mid-September, the weather had begun to turn cool.

Although the Factory was enclosed on all sides, the cold wind blowing in through the gaps still caused the two to feel a chill.

Feeling Sarah’s body trembling slightly, Brian sat up, pulled the blanket covering both of them completely over the girl, and then lay back down to close his eyes and sleep.

But as soon as he lay down, Sarah beside him suddenly moved.

She turned over, straightened Brian’s arm, placed her head directly on it, curled her whole body into his arms, and then pulled the blanket over herself, covering both of them.

Feeling the body temperature of the girl in his arms, Brian froze instantly.

Having never had much interaction with women, he had never experienced such a thing and didn’t know what to do for a moment.

But slowly, listening to the steady breathing of the girl in his arms, his body gradually relaxed.

Exhausted from the day, he couldn’t resist the onset of sleepiness.

Their breathing intertwined, and the two, now fast asleep, gradually drifted into their respective dreams.
