Tang Jin looked in surprise at the group of stern-faced people standing before her. Director Zhu, the Women’s Affairs Director, carefully sized her up.

“Are you Battalion Commander Song’s wife?”

Tang Jin didn’t recognize any of them, but they all looked like officials. At that moment, Song Yunli also stepped out of the house.

“Director Zhu… what brings you here?”

“These comrades are from the military committee. We’ve received a report accusing you of engaging in an improper relationship between a man and a woman. Please come with us to assist in the investigation.”

Director Zhu’s expression remained impassive.

Both Tang Jin and Song Yunli were stunned.

Someone had actually reported them for having an improper relationship?

Standing in the doorway, Sister-in-law Wan couldn’t help speaking up.

“Director, could there be some mistake? Sister Tang and Battalion Commander Song are husband and wife. Who reports a married couple for having an improper relationship?”

“Exactly. That’s ridiculous.”

“Could it be they’re accusing Battalion Commander Song of being involved with another woman? Otherwise, why are they only taking him in for questioning?”

“No way. He doesn’t seem like that kind of person.”

“…”

As soon as they saw Director Zhu arrive, many of the military wives gathered around, their eyes full of curiosity and gossip.

From the back of the crowd, Wang Pandi clicked her tongue.

“Well, you never know. You can’t judge a person just by appearances.”

Tang Jin glanced at her, and Wang Pandi immediately fell silent.

Director Zhu’s attitude, however, remained relatively gentle.

“It’s only an investigation. If the report is fabricated, he’ll be back very soon.”

“May I ask who filed the report?” Tang Jin asked, even though she knew they probably wouldn’t answer.

Director Zhu shook her head.

“It was submitted anonymously. Until the investigation is complete, we can’t disclose that information.”

“Understood, Director. We’re willing to cooperate.”

Song Yunli remained calm and composed. Before leaving, he even reminded Tang Jin:

“The bathroom can’t be used tonight. The cement needs time to dry. Ah Jin, wait for me to come back.”

“Mm.”

Tang Jin nodded and reassured him.

“Don’t worry about me. I can take care of myself.”

Watching the young couple exchange affectionate words, it was obvious that their relationship was genuine.

Song Yunli was escorted away by the committee’s investigation team.

Before leaving, Director Zhu gave Tang Jin a meaningful look.

“Don’t worry.”

“Thank you, Director.”

Tang Jin watched them leave, her emotions tangled. She had already guessed the reporter’s true intention.

She was pregnant now, and the child had clearly been conceived before she and Song Yunli were married. If someone focused solely on that fact, Song Yunli could indeed find himself in serious trouble.

“Everyone, stop watching and go home for dinner.”

Sister-in-law Wan drove away the curious onlookers and took Tang Jin’s slightly cold hand.

“Sister Tang, don’t be afraid. Didn’t Director Zhu say it herself? It’s just an investigation. Battalion Commander Song will be back soon.”

“Mm.”

Tang Jin forced out a smile.

“Thank you, Sister-in-law. I’m a little tired and would like to be alone for a while.”

“Alright. If you need anything, just call me. I’ll be next door.”

After comforting her for a while, Sister-in-law Wan finally left.

Once the door closed, Tang Jin looked at the newly built bathroom in their home.

Song Yunli had simply partitioned off a small area. The brick wall reached only to knee height, with a curtain hanging above it. He had also made a drainage opening in the wall.

That way, when she bathed inside, the water could flow directly out instead of soaking the entire room.

Her mood was heavy.

By now, night had already fallen, so Tang Jin entered her space to wash up.

Unable to sleep, she drank a large cup of well water before finally drifting into a hazy slumber.

The next morning, she took a biscuit from her space, mixed herself a cup of milk powder, and then headed straight for the guesthouse outside the family compound.

Song Yunting and Wen Fang were still asleep.

Bang! Bang! Bang!

Tang Jin pounded on the door.

“Song Yunting!”

“What now? Making a racket so early in the morning.”

Song Yunting opened the door with her hair sticking up in every direction. Seeing Tang Jin, she immediately sneered.

“How rare. You actually lowered yourself to come see us.”

“Wen Fang.”

Ignoring her, Tang Jin shoved past Song Yunting and strode straight toward Wen Fang.

“Did you write the report letter?”

“What report letter?”

Song Yunting was startled and instantly forgot to complain about being pushed.

Wen Fang’s eyes flickered.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about. I was with Yunting the whole day yesterday. When would I have had time to write any report letter?”

“I never said it was written yesterday. How did you know?”

Tang Jin narrowed her eyes.

Startled, Wen Fang instinctively pulled the blanket around herself.

“I guessed.

Maybe you should reflect on your own actions. Otherwise, why would people report you and not someone else?”

“‘You’?”

Tang Jin laughed in anger.

“I only mentioned a report letter. I never said who was reported. Wen Fang, you’ve really opened my eyes today.”

She grabbed Wen Fang off the bed and immediately started punching and kicking her.

Song Yunting was completely dumbfounded.

While trying to pull Tang Jin away, she asked anxiously,

“Tang Jin, what’s going on? What report letter?

Stop hitting Fangfang first. Maybe it’s all a misunderstanding. Let’s talk this through.”

“Tingting, save me!”

Perhaps because she felt guilty, Wen Fang only knew how to curl up and shield her head.

Tang Jin landed one last hard kick before turning to Song Yunting.

“This is the first time I’ve ever met a sister who would sabotage her own brother.

She reported me and your brother for having an improper relationship. If your brother really gets stripped of his position and sent to a labor farm, let’s see whether you’ll still be smiling.”

“What?!”

Song Yunting was shocked.

She might dislike Tang Jin, but she had never wanted to harm her own brother.

“Fangfang, you really reported Old Song?”

Just then, Wen Zhengyang arrived looking for Wen Fang.

Hearing Tang Jin’s words, he froze in disbelief.

“Brother, even you suspect me?”

Tears streamed down Wen Fang’s face.

Tang Jin had really hit her hard.

Wen Zhengyang’s mind was in complete chaos. He could only stare blankly at Tang Jin.

“Sister-in-law, what exactly happened?”

“Ask your precious little sister!”

Tang Jin had no desire to speak with him.

After venting her anger, she turned and left.

Behind her, Song Yunting’s voice rang out.

“Sister Fang, only the few of us knew about this. Zhengyang and I would never report my brother.”

“Fangfang, come with me to the military base right now and explain everything.”

Wen Zhengyang reached out to pull her up.

Wen Fang shook off his hand.

“I already told you—it wasn’t me!”

“But yesterday you said you were delivering a letter to Brother Zhengyang!”

For once, Song Yunting’s brain worked quickly.

No wonder Wen Fang had refused to let her accompany her last night. Normally, she would never go alone.

“What letter?”

Wen Zhengyang narrowed his eyes, disappointment written all over his face.

“Fangfang, how did you become like this?”

“What have I become?”

Wen Fang laughed and cried at the same time, her expression almost deranged.

“You all forced me into this!

Tingting, if you hadn’t spent all day calling me your future sister-in-law, would I have held onto such hope?

And you—my dear brother. If you had been willing to help match me with Brother Yunli earlier,

we would have been married long ago. There would never have been a Tang Jin in the picture.

So it’s all your fault!

You’re the reason I couldn’t have the man I wanted!”

Wen Zhengyang and Song Yunting were utterly stunned.
