Relay Station

The staircase descended much farther than Adrian expected. Concrete walls closed in around them while rusted emergency lights lined the corridor every few yards. Dead, dark and silent. Their footsteps echoed softly through the underground passage as they continued downward. The deeper they went, the colder the air became.

Not the natural chill of underground stone, mechanically maintained. Like the facility was still breathing somewhere beneath the earth.Full novel: Reclamation America — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Adrian kept one hand ready to grab the shotgun slung across his back while he glanced down at the Pip-Boy. The red screen glowed faintly in the darkness, as if it already knew where they were going.

"You know," Adrian muttered, keeping his voice low, "every Fallout player instinct I have says this ends with robots shooting at us."

Cassandra glanced back over her shoulder. "Fallout player?"

Shit, right. Careful. "Uh... vault expression." The excuse sounded terrible the moment it left his mouth.

Cassandra definitely noticed. To his surprise, she let it pass. Whatever waited beneath Shady Sands seemed far more important than Adrian's increasingly suspicious vocabulary.

The staircase finally emptied into a broad maintenance corridor buried deep beneath the settlement. Adrian stopped without thinking. Jesus Christ, the place looked almost untouched.

Dust blanketed the floor, but beneath it the facility remained remarkably intact. Wall panels still fit together cleanly. Wiring conduits ran unbroken along the ceiling. Utility doors remained sealed, their faded federal warning labels barely visible beneath decades of grime.

This wasn't a ruin, it was infrastructure. That distinction hit him harder than he expected.

A cracked sign mounted to the wall still managed to read:

FEDERAL CIVIL DEFENSE AUXILIARY RELAY NODE

"This place is a lot older than the war," Adrian said quietly.

"Yes." Cassandra's voice sounded different down here. Tighter, more deliberate.

Lantern light flickered across the corridor as they advanced, its glow swallowed by the darkness ahead. The silence pressed against them. No wind, no insects and no distant wasteland sounds. Only the faint hum of machinery somewhere below.

Adrian immediately disliked that. "You hear that, right?"

"Yes." Not comforting.

The corridor split into three passages ahead. One had collapsed beneath tons of rock and concrete. Another ended at a pair of massive blast doors that remained stubbornly sealed. The third stretched deeper underground beneath dim red emergency lights that still glowed along the floor, barely. But they were on, active power. Adrian felt his pulse quicken.

The Pip-Boy vibrated softly against his wrist, then the screen flickered.

LOCAL NODE SYNCHRONIZATION DETECTED

The emergency lights brightened, both Adrian and Cassandra froze. Somewhere deep inside the facility, a heavy metallic THUNK echoed through the concrete. Then another, systems waking up.

"Oh, that's bad," Adrian whispered.

Cassandra scanned the corridor with practiced precision. "Stay alert."

"Way ahead of you on that one."

They continued deeper as the red lights slowly intensified. Dust drifted through stale air while ancient ventilation fans groaned awake somewhere overhead. The place felt less abandoned with every step. Not alive, waiting. Somehow that was worse.

Federal insignias appeared more frequently now, faded but unmistakable. They weren't military markings, Civil Defense, Continuity Management and Emergency Operations. America hadn't simply planned for nuclear war, it had planned for what came after.

The corridor finally opened into an enormous chamber. Adrian stopped again.

Rows of terminals stretched along both walls beneath massive display screens darkened by time. Central workstations surrounded a recessed communications platform packed with radio equipment, server racks, and relay hardware.

Dust covered everything, but power still flowed through the room. Minimal, dormant and waiting. A massive seal dominated the far wall.

UNITED STATES CONTINUITY AUTHORITY

Beneath it.

REGIONAL RELAY NODE 07-A

Adrian stared silently. This wasn't forgotten utility infrastructure. It was a command center.

Cassandra moved slowly through the room, her eyes sweeping over every detail with quiet familiarity. Clearance placards. Terminal labels. Equipment layouts. Recognition again, far too much recognition. Near the center platform, one terminal blinked faintly beneath a layer of dust.

The Pip-Boy vibrated harder as Adrian approached.

EXECUTIVE PRESENCE CONFIRMED

The terminal came to life. Then another and another.

WHUM.

WHUM.

WHUM.

Across the chamber, dormant monitors awakened one after another until pale light spilled across the room. Adrian instinctively stepped back. Overhead speakers crackled through decades of static before settling into a steady hum.

Then the same distorted voice filled the chamber. "Regional relay node operational." Its mechanical tone echoed through the underground facility. Cold and artificial.

Cassandra's hand drifted toward her pistol, not panic. Preparation.

The central display flickered before sharp white lettering appeared across the screen.

PRIMARY EXECUTIVE IDENTIFIED

Adrian felt his stomach sink. "That's probably not good."

Cassandra didn't disagree.

The voice continued. "Executive Continuity chain disruption acknowledged." A brief pause. "National recovery status catastrophic."

One of the giant map displays slowly illuminated. A map of the continental United States spread across the wall, almost entirely consumed by blinking red markers. Entire regions had gone black, others filled with cascading system reports.

INFRASTRUCTURE FAILURE

RADIATION COLLAPSE

COMMUNICATIONS LOSS

America had been reduced to diagnostics... Jesus Christ.

The voice spoke again with the same emotionless precision. "Eighty-four years since continuity interruption."

Silence settled over the chamber, even Adrian stopped making jokes. For the first time, the passage of time truly landed. This system had been waiting for almost a century. Still carrying out its mission, still expecting someone to answer and still waiting for leadership that never came… it was unsettling in a way no monster or raider had managed to be.

The display changed again.

EXECUTIVE SUCCESSION STATUS, NO VERIFIED OFFICE HOLDERS REMAINING

Another line appeared beneath it.

EMERGENCY STATUTE 01 ACTIVE

Adrian slowly looked toward Cassandra. "What's Emergency Statute Zero-One?"

She didn't answer the hesitation told him enough. The speakers answered instead. "In the absence of surviving executive leadership" The voice faded for a second. "Continuity authority transfers to the verified successor."

The room fell silent. Adrian stared at the screen for several long seconds before weakly pointing at himself. "No."

The system continued as though he hadn't spoken. "Biometric identity confirmed."

Another line appeared across the terminal display.

EXECUTIVE SUCCESSION RECOGNIZED

The weight of the room seemed to settle onto Adrian's shoulders all at once. Not because anyone had elected him or because anyone had chosen him. But because every surviving machine in the building had reached the exact same conclusion.

According to the last functioning pieces of the United States government... Adrian Vance was the President of the United States.
