She saw the Shadow King.

The same silver-black aura.

The same cold smile.

The same ancient presence that had haunted her memories for thousands of years.

Except this time, it was wearing Orion’s face.

“Orion?”

The boy tilted his head.

A slow smile appeared.

“That’s not who I am anymore.”

Kael immediately stepped in front of Aria.

“Release my son.”

The figure inside Orion laughed.

“Your son?”

His voice carried two tones at once.

One belonged to Orion.

The other belonged to something ancient.

“You still don’t understand.”

Kael raised his sword.

“I don’t care what you are.”

The Shadow King looked at him.

“Then perhaps you should care what happens to him.”

Kael stopped.

Orion’s body trembled.

His hands curled into fists.

For a moment, the darkness around him weakened.

“Father…”

Kael’s expression changed.

“Orion?”

“Help me.”

Kael took a step forward.

The Shadow King snarled.

“Stay back.”

Aria stepped beside Kael.

“Orion is fighting you.”

“Of course he is.”

The Shadow King smiled.

“That’s what makes him useful.”

Aria raised the Crown of Eternity.

“Get out of my son’s body.”

The Shadow King laughed.

“You cannot force me out.”

“Why?”

“Because he invited me in.”

Aria stared at Orion.

“That’s not true.”

The Shadow King smiled.

“Ask him.”

Aria looked at her son.

“Orion?”

His eyes flickered.

Black.

Silver.

Black again.

“Mother…”

His voice shook.

“I did.”

Aria’s heart dropped.

“Why?”

“I was trying to save Lyra.”

Lyra stepped forward.

“You did what?”

Orion looked at his sister.

“He wanted you.”

The darkness spread across his arms.

“I couldn’t let him take you.”

“So I made a deal.”

Aria’s voice trembled.

“What deal?”

Orion looked at her.

“I gave him myself.”

“No.”

The Shadow King smiled.

“And now the bargain must be fulfilled.”

Aria shook her head.

“No.”

“You cannot stop it.”

“I can.”

“You already failed once.”

Aria’s expression hardened.

“I won’t fail again.”

The Shadow King lifted Orion’s hand.

Black energy gathered in his palm.

Kael moved instantly.

“Aria, get back!”

The energy exploded.

Kael blocked it with his sword.

The force drove him backward.

Damon rushed forward.

“Kael!”

He caught him before he fell.

Malakai raised his weapon.

“Aria!”

She didn’t move.

Her eyes remained fixed on Orion.

The Crown of Eternity floated above her.

She could feel the darkness inside him.

But underneath it…

there was still a heartbeat.

Still a soul.

Still her son.

“Orion.”

The boy’s head lifted.

“Mother?”

“I’m coming for you.”

The Shadow King laughed.

“You can’t reach me.”

Aria stepped forward.

“I don’t need to reach you.”

She touched the Crown.

“I need to reach him.”

Silver light exploded from her body.

The Sanctuary shook.

The Shadow King screamed.

“What are you doing?”

Aria closed her eyes.

She reached deeper.

Past the darkness.

Past the ancient magic.

Past the Shadow King’s presence.

She searched for Orion.

Then—

She found him.

He was standing alone in darkness.

His knees were drawn against his chest.

His face was wet with tears.

“Orion.”

He looked up.

“Mother?”

Aria ran toward him.

“You came.”

“Of course.”

“You shouldn’t have.”

“Why?”

“He’s too strong.”

Aria grabbed his hands.

“You’re stronger.”

“No.”

“Yes.”

“I couldn’t stop him.”

“You stopped him once.”

“That was luck.”

“No.”

Aria smiled.

“That was you.”

Orion looked down.

“I was scared.”

“So was I.”

“You?”

“Of course.”

“You’re the Queen.”

Aria shook her head.

“No.”

He looked confused.

“I’m Aria.”

The darkness around them trembled.

“And you’re Orion.”

He stared at her.

“Not a vessel.”

“Not a weapon.”

“Not a prophecy.”

She squeezed his hands.

“You’re my son.”

A crack appeared in the darkness.

The Shadow King’s voice thundered from everywhere.

“ENOUGH!”

Orion flinched.

Aria held him tighter.

“Don’t listen.”

“He’ll kill you.”

“Let him try.”

The darkness cracked again.

Orion’s eyes filled with tears.

“Mother…”

“What?”

“I don’t want to be like him.”

“You won’t.”

“How do you know?”

“Because you’re already choosing differently.”

The Shadow King’s voice roared.

“YOU BELONG TO ME!”

Orion suddenly turned toward the darkness.

“No.”

The voice stopped.

Orion stood straight.

“I don’t.”

The Shadow King appeared before him.

“You are my vessel.”

“I’m not.”

“You were created for me.”

“I was born for my mother.”

The Shadow King raised his hand.

Darkness surged toward Orion.

Aria stepped between them.

Silver light collided with black.

The force threw both of them backward.

Orion fell.

Aria caught him.

The Shadow King screamed.

“You cannot protect him forever!”

Aria stood.

“I don’t have to.”

She looked at Orion.

“Because he can protect himself.”

The boy slowly stood.

Silver light appeared around his body.

The darkness remained.

But now it was mixed with silver.

The Shadow King stared.

“What are you?”

Orion looked at him.

“Your mistake.”

The darkness around Orion exploded.

A shockwave tore through the Sanctuary.

In the real world, Orion’s body jerked violently.

The black symbol on his chest cracked.

Kael stared.

“Aria!”

“I know!”

She pressed both hands against Orion’s chest.

“Come back to me!”

Orion screamed.

The black symbol split.

A dark mist escaped his body.

It gathered above him.

The Shadow King’s face appeared within it.

He looked furious.

“You think you’ve won?”

Aria stood over Orion.

“Yes.”

The Shadow King laughed.

“You’ve only freed my vessel.”

Aria raised the Crown.

“No.”

She looked at the dark figure.

“I’ve freed my son.”

The Crown released a beam of silver light.

It struck the Shadow King’s spirit.

He screamed.

The entire Sanctuary shook.

Then the darkness disappeared.

Orion collapsed.

Aria caught him.

“Orion!”

His eyes opened.

Silver.

Normal.

“Mother?”

She hugged him tightly.

“I’m here.”

He smiled weakly.

“You came back.”

“I always will.”

Kael knelt beside them.

“Is he okay?”

Aria nodded.

“He’s alive.”

Kael closed his eyes in relief.

Lyra rushed over.

“Orion!”

“I’m okay.”

Lyra hugged him.

“You scared me.”

“Sorry.”

“Don’t do it again.”

Orion laughed softly.

“I’ll try.”

Damon stood a short distance away.

He looked toward the Sanctuary entrance.

“We have a bigger problem.”

Everyone turned.

The doorway was glowing red.

Malakai walked toward it.

“The Shadow King isn’t gone.”

Aria stood.

“I know.”

“No.”

Malakai shook his head.

“You don’t understand.”

He pointed toward the doorway.

“Look.”

A figure stood beyond it.

At first, it looked like a man.

Then Aria recognized the armor.

The crown.

The black eyes.

The Shadow King.

But he was different.

He wasn’t a spirit anymore.

He had a physical body.

A new one.

A body that looked painfully familiar.

Aria stared.

“Who is that?”

Malakai’s face became pale.

“I was afraid of this.”

Kael stood beside Aria.

“Who?”

Malakai whispered:

“Lucian.”

Aria’s heart stopped.

Her father.

The man she had believed had died.

The man whose memories had haunted her.

The man she had blamed for Elena’s death.

He stood outside the Sanctuary.

Alive.

But his eyes were black.

The Shadow King had found a new vessel.

Aria stepped forward.

“Father?”

Lucian slowly smiled.

“Hello, daughter.”

Kael raised his sword.

“Stay away from her.”

Lucian laughed.

“You still protect her.”

Aria stared at him.

“What did you do to him?”

The Shadow King answered through Lucian’s mouth.

“Nothing.”

He touched his chest.

“He offered himself.”

Aria shook her head.

“My father would never.”

Lucian’s expression softened.

“Oh, Aria.”

His voice suddenly changed.

It became Lucian’s.

His real voice.

“Your father would do anything to protect you.”

Aria froze.

“Father?”

For a moment, his eyes returned to normal.

“Run.”

The Shadow King took control again.

“No.”

Lucian’s body trembled.

“Run, Aria!”

The blackness returned.

“Your father is stronger than you think.”

Aria raised the Crown.

“Then I’ll save him.”

Lucian smiled.

“Try.”

The Shadow King raised his hand.

The Sanctuary doors slammed shut.

Black chains wrapped around the walls.

The entire building began transforming.

Malakai looked around in horror.

“The Sanctuary is being corrupted.”

Damon drew his weapon.

“Then we destroy it.”

Malakai shook his head.

“We can’t.”

“Why?”

“Because the Sanctuary isn’t just a building.”

Aria looked at him.

“Then what is it?”

Malakai’s expression became grim.

“It’s the heart of the ancient Queen.”

Aria stared.

“What?”

“If the Sanctuary dies…”

He looked at Lyra and Orion.

“…so do your children.”

Silence.

The Shadow King smiled.

“Now, Aria.”

He extended Lucian’s hand.

“Let’s see how much you’re willing to sacrifice for your family.”

Aria looked at her children.

Then Kael.

Then Damon.

Finally, at her father.

Her grip tightened around the Crown of Eternity.

She had spent three thousand years being forced to choose.

Between love and power.

Between her children.

Between life and death.

But she had learned something.

She didn’t have to choose.

She had to find another way.

Aria raised the Crown.

“You’re right about one thing.”

The Shadow King smiled.

“What?”

“I’ll sacrifice everything.”

Her silver eyes ignited.

“Except them.”

The Sanctuary exploded with light.

And deep beneath the ancient temple, something that had been sleeping for three thousand years…

finally woke.
