The last words echoed through the Sanctuary.
The true King has awakened.
Aria stood motionless.
Around her, the ruins of the Sanctuary glowed with dying silver light.
Lucian lay unconscious several feet away.
Orion was on his knees.
Lyra was beside him.
Kael and Damon stood ready for another attack.
But nothing happened.
No explosion.
No army.
No Shadow King.
Only silence.
Then Lucian opened his eyes.
They were no longer black.
They were silver.
“Aria…”
She rushed toward him.
“Father?”
Lucian struggled to sit.
His face was pale.
“Don’t call me that.”
Aria froze.
“What?”
“I don’t deserve it.”
“You were controlled.”
Lucian shook his head.
“I knew.”
Aria stared.
“What do you mean?”
“I knew what was happening.”
His eyes filled with tears.
“I couldn’t stop him.”
Aria knelt beside him.
“You tried.”
“I failed.”
“You protected me.”
Lucian looked at her.
“I protected you once.”
He glanced toward Orion.
“I failed him.”
Orion slowly approached.
Lucian looked at the boy.
“I’m sorry.”
Orion said nothing.
Lucian lowered his head.
“I should have found you.”
“You couldn’t.”
“I should have.”
Orion hesitated.
Then he reached for Lucian’s hand.
“It’s okay.”
Lucian looked surprised.
“Why?”
“Because Mother found me.”
Aria’s heart tightened.
She placed her hand on both of theirs.
“We’re together now.”
Kael watched them.
Then he looked toward the darkness surrounding the Sanctuary.
“Not for long.”
Everyone turned.
A deep rumble shook the ground.
Damon drew his sword.
“Something’s coming.”
Malakai looked toward the floor.
“Not something.”
The stone beneath them cracked.
“Someone.”
A black mist began rising.
Aria stood.
“Where is the Shadow King?”
Malakai’s face was grim.
“He’s gone.”
“Then what’s coming?”
“The one he served.”
Aria frowned.
“The Shadow King served someone?”
Malakai nodded.
“Long before the Shadow Realm existed.”
The ground split open.
A hand emerged.
Then another.
A figure slowly climbed from the darkness.
He was enormous.
Not a giant.
But something older.
His body looked human, yet black symbols covered his skin.
Two enormous horns curved from his forehead.
His eyes were completely white.
Aria felt the air leave her lungs.
Lyra whispered:
“Mother.”
Aria stepped backward.
“Stay behind me.”
The creature looked at her.
Then smiled.
“So…”
His voice shook the Sanctuary.
“The Queen finally remembers.”
Aria raised her hand.
“Who are you?”
The creature laughed.
“You still ask that question?”
He stepped forward.
“I am the reason your first kingdom fell.”
Kael raised his sword.
“Name yourself.”
The creature looked at him.
“The wolf.”
Kael’s eyes narrowed.
“What?”
“You carry the blood of my oldest enemy.”
Kael’s grip tightened.
“Who?”
The creature pointed at him.
“Your first King.”
Kael froze.
“My ancestor?”
“Not your ancestor.”
The creature smiled.
“Your father.”
Silence.
Kael’s face went pale.
“My father died before I was born.”
“No.”
“He was murdered.”
“By whom?”
The creature looked at Aria.
“By her.”
Kael turned toward Aria.
“What?”
Aria shook her head.
“I don’t remember.”
The creature laughed.
“Of course you don’t.”
He raised his hand.
A vision appeared.
A battlefield.
Thousands of wolves.
A young Kael.
And Aria.
But Aria was wearing the ancient crown.
She was holding a sword.
Standing over the body of a fallen wolf.
Kael stared at the vision.
“That’s my father.”
Aria covered her mouth.
“No.”
The creature smiled.
“You killed him.”
Kael looked at Aria.
“Did you?”
Aria’s voice trembled.
“I don’t know.”
The creature laughed.
“That’s the problem with erased memories.”
He pointed toward her.
“You can never trust what you think you remember.”
Aria’s eyes hardened.
“Then why show me this?”
“Because I want you to remember the rest.”
The vision changed.
Aria saw herself standing in a throne room.
Her father was beside her.
Kael’s father stood opposite them.
They were arguing.
Then the Shadow King appeared.
But he wasn’t attacking.
He was kneeling.
Before Aria.
Aria’s eyes widened.
“I ruled him.”
The creature nodded.
“Yes.”
“You were my enemy.”
“No.”
“Then what were you?”
The creature smiled.
“Your first King.”
Aria froze.
“What?”
“I created the Shadow Realm for you.”
“No.”
“I gave you immortality.”
“No.”
“I gave you the Crown.”
Aria shook her head.
“Then why did you become my enemy?”
The creature’s smile disappeared.
“Because you betrayed me.”
Aria stared.
“How?”
“You chose humanity.”
Silence.
The creature looked at Lyra.
“Then you created the children.”
He looked at Orion.
“And divided your power.”
Then back to Aria.
“You left me.”
Aria’s voice was barely audible.
“Who are you?”
The creature stepped closer.
“My name is Azrael.”
Aria’s heart stopped.
She looked at the ruins where the other Azrael had disappeared.
“No.”
The creature smiled.
“The man you met was only my shadow.”
Damon stepped forward.
“Then the man from the bridge…”
“A fragment.”
“And the Shadow King?”
“Another fragment.”
Aria’s eyes widened.
“Then you’re saying…”
Azrael nodded.
“The Shadow King was never the true enemy.”
Kael raised his sword.
“Then what are you?”
Azrael looked at him.
“I am the source.”
The entire Sanctuary shook.
Orion suddenly cried out.
Aria turned.
Black veins had returned to his arms.
“No!”
She rushed toward him.
Azrael smiled.
“He’s calling you.”
“Who?”
“Your son.”
Aria looked at Orion.
His eyes were silver.
But tears ran down his face.
“Mother…”
She held him.
“What is it?”
“I can hear him.”
“Who?”
Orion pointed toward Azrael.
“Him.”
Aria looked up.
Azrael’s expression became serious.
“He remembers.”
“What?”
“Everything.”
Orion’s body shook.
A wave of energy exploded from him.
Aria was thrown backward.
Kael caught her.
“Aria!”
“I’m fine.”
Orion stood.
His eyes were glowing silver and black.
Two powers.
Two souls.
Azrael stared.
“Impossible.”
Aria looked at her son.
“What happened?”
Orion turned toward her.
“I remember.”
“What?”
“My first life.”
Aria’s heart pounded.
“What do you remember?”
Orion looked at Azrael.
“He lied.”
Azrael’s face changed.
“What did you say?”
Orion stepped forward.
“You didn’t create the Shadow Realm for Mother.”
Azrael’s eyes narrowed.
“Be careful.”
“You created it for yourself.”
Silence.
Orion continued.
“You wanted her power.”
Azrael’s expression darkened.
“You know nothing.”
“I remember.”
Orion’s voice became stronger.
“You killed the original King.”
Azrael took a step backward.
“You killed him and stole his crown.”
Aria stared.
“Orion…”
“He became the Shadow King because he was trying to stop you.”
Azrael’s eyes flashed.
“Enough.”
Orion raised his hand.
Silver energy struck Azrael.
The creature flew backward.
Everyone froze.
Kael stared.
“How did he do that?”
Malakai whispered:
“Because he has both powers.”
Aria looked at her son.
“The light and darkness.”
Malakai nodded.
“Together.”
Orion stared at his hands.
“I can control them.”
Azrael rose slowly.
Blood ran from the corner of his mouth.
His expression was no longer amused.
“You should not exist.”
Orion looked at him.
“But I do.”
Azrael spread his wings.
The entire Sanctuary darkened.
“Then I’ll correct that mistake.”
He launched himself forward.
Kael stepped in front of Aria.
Damon and Malakai attacked from both sides.
Lyra raised her hands.
Silver light filled the chamber.
Orion stood at the center.
For the first time, he wasn’t afraid.
He looked at his mother.
“Mother.”
“Yes?”
“Trust me.”
Aria nodded.
“I do.”
Orion turned toward Azrael.
The two powers inside him erupted.
Silver.
Black.
Light and darkness twisted together.
Azrael’s smile returned.
“You think your little power can defeat me?”
Orion smiled.
“No.”
He raised his hand.
“I think my family can.”
Kael charged.
Damon followed.
Malakai attacked.
Lyra’s magic filled the Sanctuary.
And Aria lifted the Crown of Eternity.
The five of them moved as one.
For the first time in three thousand years…
the Queen was not fighting alone.
Azrael roared as their combined power struck him.
The Sanctuary exploded.
And when the light disappeared—
Azrael was gone.
But on the ground where he had stood…
a single black feather remained.
Aria picked it up.
The moment she touched it, a voice whispered in her mind.
You defeated my body.
A pause.
But you haven’t found my heart.
Aria’s eyes widened.
The feather dissolved into black smoke.
Then a final message appeared on the stone wall:
THE FIRST WAR WAS NEVER OVER.
Aria stared at the words.
Kael came to her side.
“What does it mean?”
Aria looked toward the distant mountains.
“It means…”
She tightened her hand around the Crown.
“…we’ve been fighting the wrong war.”
Far beyond the Sanctuary, beneath a kingdom that everyone believed had been destroyed centuries ago…
a pair of golden eyes opened.
And someone whispered:
“Let the second war begin.”
