Stepping out of the alley, Claire held Sherry in her arms, covering her head with a jacket to shield her from the rain as best she could.
Leon and Alan Han followed behind Ada Wong.
“Have you heard of the Umbrella Corporation?
That company has been secretly manufacturing biological weapons.
They have a virus that can turn humans into unkillable monsters.”
Ada Wong walked ahead, chatting with the three of them from time to time.
“No wonder we ran into those terrifying things.”
“That’s why I’m tracking down Annette Birkin.
She’s the Umbrella Corporation employee responsible for the virus leak.”
Ada Wong deftly flipped down from the wooden walkway made of scaffolding, with Leon and Alan Han following closely behind.
Mom?
Sherry peeked out in surprise, then quickly buried her head back into Claire’s arms.
She felt nervous, her face heating up.
With her vision blocked by the jacket, she couldn’t help but think of her mother’s perpetually expressionless face.
What did Mom do?
Brushing the dust off her clothes, Ada Wong continued.
“We’ll look for Annette from here.”
“Since we’re hunting scum, going through the sewers does seem fitting.”
Leon picked up her words.
Alan Han glanced at Sherry.
Seeing that she seemed distracted and hadn’t heard, he quietly let out a sigh of relief.
“Well said.
Go ahead.”
Ada Wong stood by the sewer entrance, watching Leon go in.
“Thanks.”
She turned to Alan Han.
“Oh, and you too.
Go ahead.”
“You’re too polite.”
Alan Han entered the sewer second, and Ada Wong then moved ahead of Claire.
“I didn’t expect a scientist to be hiding in a place like this.”
Leon walked through the damp sewer, sounding a bit thoughtful.
“Scientists tend to have their quirks.”
The stench in the air killed Alan Han’s appetite entirely.
“According to headquarters, this place leads to a secret Umbrella Corporation facility.”
“No way.
The sewers are managed by the city government.
If there were a facility here, how could they not know?”
“Exactly.
Which means they do know.”
Ada Wong glanced at the completely unfazed Alan Han, nodded in agreement, then looked at Leon.
“This is America.
Corporations rule here.
Umbrella has been secretly controlling Raccoon City for years.”
“This country is a mess.”
After hearing everything, Claire muttered in frustration.
Suddenly, the entire sewer trembled.
“Oh my God, was that an earthquake?”
Ada Wong looked at the walls.
“If it were just an earthquake, that would be great.”
“It could be something big.
Like that Tyrant from earlier.”
“Don’t scare me, Han.
I really don’t want that thing chasing me.”
Alan Han was about to reply when he saw Leon stop after entering a narrow passage.
Ada Wong and Claire followed his gaze.
Behind an arched iron grate ahead, a huge, grotesque tail slowly moved, then quickly slid to the right and disappeared.
“What the hell was that?”
Leon stepped forward, leaning close to the bars to get a better look.
“Stay alert.
Who knows what’s down here.”
Hearing this, Alan Han muttered under his breath.
At least we won’t run into three turtles here.
Circling around from the left, the four of them walked through the area where the massive creature had just passed.
It was a long corridor, dim mining lamps scattered along both sides, while the path ahead was swallowed by darkness.
After walking for a while, Leon turned into a fork on the left under Ada Wong’s guidance.
Boom…
“There it goes again.”
The sewer trembled once more, and Leon complained.
“Leon, it’s not too late to turn back.”
“No chance.
You’re not shaking me off until this is over.”
“Ada Wong, don’t bother.
Leon won’t give up.”
“I have to admit, I admire his persistence.”
Alan Han knew Leon’s stubborn streak well, and Claire had seen it too.
That was exactly why so many people liked him.
Whatever Ada Wong said would not change anything.
Of course, she found that trait of Leon’s quite interesting as well.
Looking at the broken path ahead and the water channel below, Leon flipped over and jumped down.
“Phew… are you sure this is the right way?”
Alan Han followed him down.
“Phew… ugh…”
The moment he landed, the stench hit him.
Alan Han gagged and vomited some stomach acid, leaving a burning sensation in his throat.
Claire stood above, covering her nose.
Sherry did the same.
Ada Wong crouched at the edge, looking at the two rather filthy figures below.
“Seems like it.”
Boom…
Leon wiped the sticky muck off his police uniform as the sewer trembled again.
This time, the source felt very close.
He raised his right hand and signaled to Ada Wong and Claire above.
“Wait for me there.”
Then he slowly moved forward into the darkness.
The murky sewage rippled.
One, two, three.
Boom!
Water exploded upward, and a massive, gaping maw burst through the surface.
“Roar!”
A huge, hideous creature with a foul-smelling, jagged-toothed mouth lunged out of the water.
Before the surface could settle, it twisted its body and slammed violently into the wall on the left.
Rubble fell from its body into the sewage, churning the water.
Then it turned its gaze toward the two people in the water.
Ada Wong braced herself above and shouted.
“Leon!
Han!
Get out of there!”
Claire shouted anxiously as well.
“Leon!
Han!
Run!”
“I know that already!”
Alan Han grabbed Leon and ran with everything he had.
“Roar!”
The crocodile-like monster saw them fleeing and charged after them on all fours, its jaws wide open.
Thud, thud, thud.
“Roar!”
It snapped up a mouthful of garbage from the sewage.
Luckily, they were fast enough.
Otherwise, they would have been crushed between its teeth.
“Oh my God!”
Alan Han let go of Leon, and the two sprinted at full speed.
Behind them, the monster missed its bite, gathered its strength, opened its jaws again, and lunged after them.
Leon spat out the filthy water that had gotten into his mouth and glanced back.
Too close.
Wait.
Dead end up ahead.
No.
It’s a pipe.
There’s a gap underneath.
We can slide through.
Leon clenched his teeth and looked at Alan Han, who had noticed it too.
“Han, slide!”
The two slid down together.
With the pipe only about twenty centimeters above their heads, Alan Han instinctively shut his eyes.
“Roar!”
The monster clamped down on the pipe, causing natural gas to gush out.
Its hard teeth struck sparks against the metal, instantly igniting the gas.
“Not bad.
Now it’s our turn to deal with you, you bath-loving little crocodile!”
Alan Han and Leon exchanged a look and aimed at the gas pipe.
Bang.
Bang.
Two gunshots rang out together in the sewer.
Boom!
The gas pipe erupted, releasing a massive burst of natural gas that ignited instantly.
Shockwaves rippled outward in layers.
Alan Han and Leon were thrown back several steps, nearly falling into the sewage.
Boom.
Chunks of the monster’s body flew out and splashed into the filthy water at their feet.
“Ugh… urgh…” x2
A foul stench spread through the air, turning both their faces green.
After finally recovering, Leon glared at the pile of flesh and cursed.
“Serves you right, you overgrown bastard.”
