The next distortion did not form like the others.

Aiden noticed the difference immediately.

The air ahead warped more violently than before, the space compressing inward as though something larger was forcing its way through.Full novel: Retry System: The Day I Refused to Die — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

The pressure in the designated zone increased, settling heavily against his senses, and for the first time since entering, Aiden felt the need to slow his approach.

This one was different.

Not just in size, but in presence.

He stopped a few steps away, his gaze fixed on the center of the distortion as it stabilized.

The fracture in the air widened, its edges trembling before snapping into place, and from within it, a shape began to emerge—more solid, more defined, and far less unstable than the creatures he had faced before.

When it fully appeared, the difference became clear.

It stood taller than the others, its form no longer flickering at the edges.

Its limbs were thicker, its movements steadier, and the hollow sound it released carried more weight, as if it existed more completely within this space.

Aiden exhaled quietly.

“…So this is the next stage.”

The system was escalating.

He stepped forward.

The creature reacted immediately.

Unlike the previous ones, it did not lunge blindly.

Its movement was slower at first, deliberate, as if assessing him in return.

Then, without warning, it closed the distance in a single step, its speed far exceeding what its size suggested.

Aiden shifted to evade, but the attack still grazed him.

A sharp impact struck his side, not enough to knock him down, but enough to disrupt his balance and send a dull ache through his body.

He recovered quickly, stepping back just enough to create space between them.

“…Stronger.”

There was no hesitation in the assessment.

But there was no retreat either.

Before, he might have fallen back, waiting for an opening, relying on distance to keep himself safe.

But now, that instinct felt inefficient.

Distance alone wouldn’t solve this.

The creature moved again, its attacks heavier, more controlled than the others.

Each strike carried weight, forcing Aiden to adjust his movements more carefully.

He avoided the next hit cleanly, but the pressure continued to build, limiting his options.

So he changed his approach.

Instead of stepping away, he stepped in.

The moment the creature raised its arm for another strike, Aiden moved forward, closing the distance before the attack could fully develop.

His movement disrupted its rhythm, forcing its form to shift slightly out of alignment.

That was enough.

He struck.

Not at its center, but at the point where its structure felt the most rigid—where stability created vulnerability.

The impact connected.

For a brief moment, nothing happened.

Then—

The creature’s body distorted.

Not violently like before, but slowly, as if something within it was resisting the collapse.

It let out a low, strained sound, its form flickering as cracks began to spread across its structure.

Aiden didn’t stop.

He struck again.

This time, the resistance broke.

The creature shattered.

Its form fractured into fragments that dissolved into the air, leaving behind a heavier silence than before.

The pressure that had filled the space eased slightly, though not completely.

Aiden remained still for a moment, his breathing steady despite the lingering tension in his body.

Then—

A faint warmth spread from where he had been hit.

The pain dulled.

Not entirely gone.

But fading.

Aiden’s gaze lowered slightly.

“…Recovery.”

It was subtle.

But real.

The system responded again.

“Synchronization: 23%”

The increase was higher this time.

Aiden noted it immediately.

“…So difficulty affects the gain.”

That made sense.

Greater pressure.

Greater reward.

But something else caught his attention.

The interface flickered again.

Longer this time.

Just for a moment, the text distorted, the characters shifting as if something behind them had failed to stabilize.

The display corrected itself quickly, returning to its usual clarity, but the inconsistency was no longer small enough to ignore.

Aiden’s gaze hardened slightly.

“…There’s still an error.”

The same one.

The one from before.

It hadn’t been resolved.

It had been skipped.

That meant—

It still existed.

A faint sound echoed again from deeper within the zone, heavier than anything before it.

The air shifted once more, the pressure returning with greater intensity, as if the system had acknowledged his progress and decided to push further.

Aiden straightened.

“…So it’s not finished.”

Of course it wasn’t.

This was only the beginning.

He stepped forward again, his movements steady despite the lingering ache in his body.

The hesitation that might have existed before was gone, replaced by something quieter but far more resolute.

This time—

He wouldn’t fall behind.

He wouldn’t be the one protected.

And he wouldn’t allow himself to reach that same ending again.

Not when he had been given another chance.

In the quiet room far from the designated zone, the world remained unchanged.

The light had shifted slightly, the morning stretching closer to noon, but the stillness inside the room had not broken.

A small figure sat near the window, his hands resting loosely in his lap as he stared outside, though his thoughts were elsewhere.

Time passed.

Slowly.

“…He said he’ll come back.”

The words were soft, repeated more for reassurance than doubt.

Even so, his gaze drifted back toward the door.

Waiting.

Back within the distorted space, Aiden continued forward, the pressure building once more as something new began to take shape ahead of him.

The test was not over.

But neither was he.
