The pressure in the designated zone did not fade after the last creature disappeared.

If anything, it lingered.

Aiden slowed his steps as he moved deeper into the space, his gaze steady as he observed the subtle changes around him.Full novel: Retry System: The Day I Refused to Die — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

The distortions had stopped appearing for now, but the atmosphere remained unstable, as though something larger was gathering just beyond his reach.

The system had gone quiet.

Too quiet.

“…So this is the pause.”

It wasn’t rest.

It was anticipation.

Aiden exhaled softly, his attention shifting inward as he monitored the faint presence of the interface.

The synchronization had risen steadily, the increase more noticeable after each encounter, but the earlier flicker had not left his mind.

There was still an error.

And it hadn’t been resolved.

Skipped.

The word carried weight.

Before he could dwell further on it, a new message appeared.

“Time Remaining: 07:42”

Aiden’s gaze stilled for a fraction of a second.

“…So that’s the condition.”

Survive.

Not defeat everything.

Not clear the area.

Just endure.

That changed things.

He looked around again, this time with a different perspective.

The absence of enemies was not a sign that the test had ended, but a shift in its nature.

The system was no longer measuring how he fought.

It was measuring how he lasted.

The air tightened slightly.

A faint ripple passed through the space ahead, weaker than before, but persistent.

Aiden did not move toward it.

Instead, he adjusted his breathing, allowing his body to settle into a steadier rhythm.

The earlier strain from the stronger creature had not disappeared completely, and rushing forward now would only waste energy.

“…I don’t need to chase it.”

For the first time since entering the zone, he chose to remain still.

Time passed.

Slowly.

Shapes flickered in and out of existence, incomplete and unstable, as though the system was testing the boundaries of the space rather than sending direct threats.

Aiden observed them without engaging.

Because he understood now.

This was not about eliminating everything in front of him.

It was about control.

Minutes passed in silence.

“Time Remaining: 03:18”

The pressure increased again.

This time, it came without warning.

The air around him compressed sharply, forcing a brief strain through his body as something shifted behind him.

Aiden turned just as a distortion formed at close range, far closer than any before it.

Too close to avoid entirely.

The impact came fast.

Aiden reacted immediately, raising his arm to deflect the strike, but the force still pushed him back a step.

Pain flared briefly along his side, sharper than before, but he held his ground.

“…So it’s not over.”

The system had not finished testing him.

But it wasn’t overwhelming him either.

It was precise.

Measured.

Aiden steadied himself, his gaze locking onto the unstable shape before him.

Instead of attacking immediately, he waited—just long enough to read its movement, just long enough to confirm its pattern.

Then he moved.

One step.

One strike.

The distortion collapsed before it could fully stabilize, dissolving into nothing once more.

Silence returned again.

But this time, Aiden did not relax.

Because he understood.

The system was no longer testing his strength.

It was testing his patience.

Far away from the designated zone, the quiet room had grown brighter with the passing time.

The small figure by the window had not moved much, though his posture had shifted slightly, his attention drifting between the outside world and the door behind him.

He glanced at the clock.

Then back at the door.

“…He should be back soon.”

The words were quieter this time.

Just waiting.

Back within the distorted space, the final minutes passed more slowly than the rest.

Aiden remained where he stood, his breathing even, his senses focused on every subtle shift in the air.

The distortions continued to flicker, but none fully formed again.

The pressure lingered—

Then gradually eased.

“Time Remaining: 00:10”

Aiden’s gaze lifted slightly.

“…It’s ending.”

The final seconds passed without interruption.

And then—

The space changed.

The weight that had pressed against him since the beginning vanished all at once, the distorted atmosphere collapsing inward before dispersing completely.

The world around him stabilized, the unnatural tension disappearing as if it had never existed.

A new message appeared.

“MISSION COMPLETE”

Aiden remained still for a moment longer.

Then exhaled.

“…So this is the result.”

The system responded again.

“Synchronization: 28%”

Higher.

Stable.

But not complete.

Aiden glanced at the interface briefly before looking ahead.

The designated zone was gone.

In its place—

The normal world returned.

When Aiden stepped back into the city, nothing had changed.

People still moved through the streets, unaware of what had just taken place.

The noise, the movement, the ordinary rhythm of life continued without interruption.

As if nothing had happened.

But Aiden knew better.

Because this time—

He had felt it.

Understood it.

And survived it.
