As Rise of Starveil begins, here is a quick refresher on the major characters and important subplot players so far. This is not meant to spoil anything ahead. It is simply here to help re-anchor who everyone is, how they connect, and where they stand after the events of the first three books.
Mira’s Core
Princess Miracle “Mira” Quinveil Firebrand is the center of the story: Princess of the Eternal Summer Court, Duchess of Starveil, Queen of the Small Folk, and wife and consort-mate to Cassie Fairborn Firebrand. She is Seara Firebrand’s half-human daughter, Elias Quinveil’s daughter, Selene Firebrand’s younger half-sister, and one of the most politically inconvenient women in Dominveil. Mira began the series trying to survive Ravenrest Heights, Summer Court expectations, and her own untrained magic. Since then, she has been forced through revelations about her bloodline, her power, her family, her body, and the forgotten city of Starveil. She is sharp, guarded, reckless, deeply loving, and often allergic to being protected in any reasonable way. Her circle has grown from a handful of friends into something much larger, even if she is not always ready to admit what that means.
Princess Cassandra “Cassie” Fairborn Firebrand is Mira’s wife, mate, and emotional center. She is Elliot Fairborn’s older sister and the daughter of Helena and Jameson Fairborn. Cassie began as Ravenrest’s untouchable human queen bee, then became Mira’s enemy, rival, protector, lover, and eventually wife. She has survived kidnapping, experimentation, separation from Mira, and the brutal reshaping of her own life into something far more dangerous than she ever planned to become. Cassie is cold when she needs to be, ruthless when Mira is threatened, and far softer with her family than she wants most people to notice. She is one of the few people who can truly challenge Mira, ground her, and terrify everyone else in the room at the same time.
Elliot Fairborn is Cassie’s younger brother and one of the emotional anchors of the Fairborn family. His illness and later rescue became one of the central wounds driving Cassie, Mira, and their families through the earlier books. Elliot is alive, loved, sarcastic, and still learning what life looks like after being the person everyone was terrified of losing. He is close to Cassie and Mira, and his survival continues to matter deeply to the emotional structure of their household.
Helena and Jameson Fairborn are Cassie and Elliot’s parents. They began as ordinary human parents trapped near impossible fae danger and have been pulled deeper into Mira and Cassie’s world by love, fear, and survival. Their family has been through grief, medical terror, magical revelation, and the kind of danger no parent should have to learn how to understand.
Elias Quinveil is Mira’s human father. He has loved Mira fiercely, even when he did not fully understand the fae world she was born into. Elias represents one of Mira’s strongest ties to her human life, her mortal family, and the part of herself that refuses to belong only to court politics. He is principled, stubborn, and increasingly aware that his daughter’s world is not as separate from his own as he once believed.
Lucien Quinveil is Mira’s human half-brother and Alina Merrick’s boyfriend. He is part of Mira’s immediate family circle on the Quinveil side and has become more emotionally present around Mira than he once was. Lucien helps keep Mira connected to the human side of her life, even as magic, court politics, and Starveil pull more of the family into danger.
Alina Merrick is Lucien’s girlfriend and a human member of the Ravenrest and Starveil orbit. She is warm, brave, and increasingly tied to the Quinveil and Firebrand chaos through Lucien, Mira, and the wider group. She is still human, but she is no longer simply an outside observer.
Firebrands and the Summer Court
High Lady Seara Firebrand is Mira and Selene’s mother and the ruling High Lady of the Eternal Summer Court. She is brilliant, controlled, politically ruthless, and terrifyingly good at treating people’s futures as pieces on a board. Seara loves her daughters, but her love is tangled with ambition, fear, duty, damage, and the old logic of courts that believe survival justifies almost anything. She is one of the most powerful forces in Mira’s life and one of the hardest for Mira to understand cleanly, because Seara can be protector, jailer, mother, strategist, and threat all at once.
Princess Selene Firebrand is Mira’s older half-sister, Duchess of Emberhall, and Seara’s polished Summer daughter. She is poised, elegant, controlled, and deeply protective of Mira in a quieter way than most of Mira’s circle. Selene has spent much of her life inside the expectations of Summer Court power, but recent revelations about her father, her siblings, and the hidden architecture of Seara’s past have complicated everything she thought she knew about her place in the family. Selene is publicly arranged to Crowned Prince Ryven Stormbringer of the Unseelie Dusk Court, though the arrangement is not as simple as politics alone.
Duke Tharion Firebrand is Seara’s bloodsworn guard and the general of Summer’s military forces. In military matters, he is outranked only by Seara. In all other court matters, the princesses outrank him. Tharion is disciplined, hard-edged, protective, and one of the major military stabilizers in Mira’s life. He has trained Mira, guarded Summer, and remained one of the people who understands exactly how dangerous court power can become when emotion and politics collide.
Duke Maelion Firebrand of Sunspire is Seara’s older brother and Mira’s uncle. He is the head of Sunspire, father of Lira, Cassian, Nerissa, and Darian, and a man shaped by old Summer discipline. Maelion represents the kind of powerful, traditional household structure Mira instinctively distrusts, but Sunspire is more complicated than one man’s title. His children, his failures, and his household’s wounds have made Sunspire one of the important family and political pressure points around the Firebrand line.
Lord Cassian Firebrand is Maelion’s eldest son and heir to Sunspire. He is proud, cruel, entitled, and deeply hostile to anything that threatens the old structure he expects to inherit. Cassian has been especially harmful to his younger siblings, Darian and Nerissa, and he represents the rot that can grow when a house mistakes cruelty for strength and obedience for virtue.
Lady Lira Firebrand is Maelion’s adult daughter and older sister to Cassian, Nerissa, and Darian. Her full name is Elira Firebrand, though she prefers Lira. She is sharp, observant, and more competent than many people in Sunspire have been willing to acknowledge. She should not be confused with Elira Ashvane, Rori’s mother.
Lady Nerissa Firebrand is Maelion’s young daughter, Darian’s twin, and Mira’s younger cousin. She has been raised under Sunspire’s narrow expectations of what daughters are supposed to be, but she has begun seeing other possibilities through Mira, Cassie, Kael, Rori, and Starveil’s orbit. Nerissa is quiet, careful, and far stronger than the adults around her have always allowed her to be.
Lord Darian Firebrand is Nerissa’s twin brother and Mira’s younger cousin. He has been harmed by Cassian’s cruel version of training and by Sunspire’s belief that fear should be treated as weakness. Darian is intelligent, observant, and still young enough that what happens next matters deeply. He is learning, slowly, that becoming strong does not have to mean becoming Cassian.
Starveil Guard and Household
Duchess-Consort Kaelenya “Kael” Firebrand is Cassie’s primary bloodsworn, Mira’s secondary bloodsworn through the Co-Seal Oath, Lady of Starveil, and Captain of the Consort’s Guard. She is also tied to Sunspire through an arranged marriage to Maelion. Kael is disciplined, watchful, elegant, and dangerous in the quiet way of someone who has learned to turn obedience into strategy when necessary. Her loyalty to Cassie and Mira is one of the clearest signs that Starveil is becoming more than a forgotten inheritance. It is becoming a place people choose.
Lady Aurora “Rori” Ashvane is Mira’s bloodsworn, Lady of Starveil, co-captain, and one of Mira’s closest daily anchors. Formerly Roran, she is Daelor and Elira Ashvane’s daughter and sister to Varian, Maelis, and Seryth. Rori’s arc has exposed how dangerous old-law daughterhood, paternal authority, and family placement can become when love is tangled with control. She is fierce, loyal, dry, and deeply protective of Mira. She is also one of the rare people Mira’s blue fire refuses to burn.
Lord Caelan Dawnbreak is Rori’s chosen fiancé and a member of the Unseelie Dawn Court’s ruling family. He began as the family-approved match that terrified Rori because he came through the same structures trying to decide her future. His importance lies in the fact that he has repeatedly chosen to stand beside Rori rather than claim authority over her. He understands that her oath to Mira is not a rival to their bond, but part of who she is.
Declan Mercer is Rori’s former human love interest. He represented ordinary chosen affection outside court structures. Rori loved him, but she could not choose a mortal future with him. Declan remains important as a real love and a road not taken, not as a mistake.
House Ashvane
Marquis Daelor Ashvane is Rori’s father and Marquis of Stormvale. He has accepted Aurora as his daughter, but that acceptance became dangerous when he tried to turn fatherhood into authority over her future. His near-use of paternal compulsion against Rori is one of the major ruptures in the Ashvane family.
Marchioness Elira Ashvane is Rori’s mother and one of the quieter architects of the pressure around Rori. She does not act as bluntly as Daelor, but she helps maintain the structures where coercion can look like care.
Lord Varian Ashvane is Rori’s brother and heir-shaped son of the house. He loves Rori, but he has also stood too close to the old family machinery and accepted too much of its logic.
Lady Maelis Ashvane is Rori’s older sister and one of the people who understands the daughter-trap from inside. She sees the family structure more clearly than most and may be one of Rori’s strongest allies inside Stormvale.
Lady Seryth Ashvane is Rori’s younger sister. She is still young, but she sees the moral truth of what happened to Rori more clearly than many of the adults around her.
House Veyra of Dawnfire
House Veyra of Dawnfire is Kael’s birth house, a powerful glyphwright and espionage family sworn under Zyrella Thornsflame’s Thornspire. Their seat is Dawnfire Hall, and their work in ward construction, counter-sabotage, and intelligence makes them useful and feared across Summer. Kael’s oath to Cassie and Mira has made the house politically uncomfortable because it ties one of their daughters directly to Starveil.
Marquis Corveth Veyra is Kael’s father and the head of House Veyra. He is brilliant, cold, ambitious, and deeply tied to Dawnfire’s glyphwright power. His fortunes are currently tied to Zyrella’s Thornspire, which makes Kael’s Starveil loyalty a political embarrassment.
Marchioness Sylara Veyra is Kael’s mother and a master of spies, rumor networks, and cleaner operations. She is calculating, patient, and dangerous in quieter ways than open court antagonists.
Lord Deyric Veyra is Kael’s older brother and heir to House Veyra. He is ambitious, controlling, loyal to Thornspire, and sees Kael’s oath to Cassie and Mira as betrayal.
Lord Mavric Veyra is Kael’s younger brother and an apprentice magistrate tied to Redvale law. He is stern, humorless, and likely to read family conflict through law and order rather than emotion.
Lady Serenya Veyra is Kael’s youngest sister and a brilliant glyph savant. She may become a potential lady-in-waiting for Mira, but she is risky because she could become ally, spy, double agent, or all of those at once.
Naomi, Kess, and the Rebellion Cell
Naomi Inari is a Frostclaw from the Winter Court, Mira’s found-family sister, and Kess’s lover. After Kess’s death, Naomi becomes one of the central carriers of Kess’s unfinished rebellion. She is grieving, furious, and still steady enough to keep acting. Naomi is protective, grounded, physically powerful, and one of the people who understands that survival work often happens in streets, safehouses, and damaged rooms long before courts are willing to admit there is a war.
Kess Inari was Naomi’s wife, Mira’s friend, and one of the sparks of the rebellion. Naomi claimed her as her wife after Kess’s death, making the name emotionally and canonically important even though the claim came too late to save her. Kess died because her cell became effective enough to threaten the Shroud. However, by the end of Daughters of Starveil, Kess has returned from death under circumstances that remain deeply unsettling. She is alive, but everyone close to her knows something is wrong. The exact nature of that wrongness is still unclear, yet her return has transformed her from a wound carried by Naomi, Mira, Jules, and the surviving cell into one of the most urgent mysteries in their lives.
Tera Nightshade is a changeling rogue tied to the Unseelie Dusk Court, Raven Nightshade, and Cinder. He was raised and trained as a tool, and he still sees usefulness as survival. He is especially useful around locks, routes, bad doors, underworld spaces, and dangerous wording. His trust is slow, guarded, and transactional, but that does not make it meaningless.
Chula Dula is a Nocturne Gnome Veil Domain cleric tied to St. Agatha’s orphanage. She works with survivors, spirits, missing children, and spiritually damaged places. Her lantern and spiritual sensitivity make her especially important around wounded sites, hauntings, and places where the dead have not entirely gone quiet.
Ferox Tourmaline Caligari is a lightning Drakenblood scholar-delver and barbarian. She is blunt, protective, cage-hostile, and deeply invested in uncovering true Drakenblood history. Ferox is the sort of person who will argue with danger if danger is being historically inaccurate.
Lireal Stormrune is the last living Stormrune heir, a blood mage, scholar, and curse-bearer. They are searching for answers about the Stonebound Curse while being pulled deeper into corrupted Ascension lore, old blood magic, and dangerous people who know too much. Lireal is brilliant, haunted, and very good at pretending fear is only research wearing inconvenient clothes.
Jules Mercer is a pretty Ebonspire-rich party girl turned breach operative and sabotage asset. Kess died saving her, which makes Jules one of the living carriers of Kess’s cost. Her wealth-coded party fluency makes her especially useful in elite social spaces, but she is also proving that looking ornamental does not mean being harmless.
Tarin Vale is a nervous but increasingly useful young tech and jammer runner in Naomi’s cell. He is Radiance Vale’s cousin. He is fast, anxious, detail-oriented, and becoming brave faster than is safe.
Micah Rourke is the quiet physical backbone of Naomi’s cell. He handles carrying, extraction, route support, and practical force. He is not flashy, but the group works better because he is there.
Sela Marris is memory, evidence continuity, route tracking, and quiet precision. She helps turn missions into usable records instead of scattered chaos.
Mira’s Social and Nightlife Orbit
Radiance Vale is one of Mira’s former casual lovers from the Dawnsbreath spiral and part of Mira’s wider social orbit. She is warm, socially fluent, and Tarin Vale’s cousin.
Charisma is another former casual connection from Mira’s separation-era orbit. She is colorful, flirty, chaotic, and useful in elite nightlife spaces where looking like a pretty party girl can be perfect cover.
Courts, Family, and Dangerous People
Prince Ryven Stormbringer is Selene’s arranged fiancé from the Unseelie Dusk Court. He has admired Selene for years and is trying to let her choose him rather than simply benefit from the arrangement. He is politically useful, emotionally complicated, and far more observant than he first appears.
High Lord Lior Sunstrike is Selene’s father, Solenne’s father, and the Radiant Lord of the Seelie Day Court. He is Seara’s mate and father of the late Solarius through her. Lior loves Selene, but his silence and omissions helped create deep family wounds. His central contradiction is that he believes in truth, but still participated in delays and omissions that became their own kind of betrayal.
Crowned Princess Solenne Sunstrike is Selene’s full sister in the Seelie Day Court and Mira’s half-sister through Seara. She has known about Selene and Mira for years and has quietly kept space for them in her life, including leaving cups for them at birthday tea. She accepts Mira as sister without making her feel like an afterthought.
Prince Solarius Firebrand was Seara and Lior’s dead son, Selene and Solenne’s full brother, and Mira’s half-brother. He died young by fae standards, and the details of his death remain a major hidden family wound.
High Lady Asteria Firebrand is Mira’s grandmother, a former High Lady of Summer, and one of the most important figures in the older layers of Firebrand, Starveil, and Ascension history. Her presence reaches the story through visions, prophecy, and old magic. She calls Mira “little star,” a nickname that should feel ancient, familial, and prophetic.
High Lady Fianna Dawnbreak rules the Unseelie Dawn Court and is Caelan’s aunt. She is sharp, modern, perceptive, and severe rather than cozy. She formally blessed Rori and Caelan’s match as chosen, not merely arranged.
Crowned Princess Seraphia Dawnbreak is Fianna’s daughter and heir to Dawn. She is composed, dry, and subtly supportive of Rori and Caelan’s chosen match.
Prince Aurelian Dawnbreak is Caelan’s father and Fianna’s younger brother. He carries bitterness because succession passed through Fianna rather than through him as eldest son. He represents the old-law patriarchal worldview Caelan was raised around and is now beginning to refuse.
Prince Seren NightBloom is tied to the Night Court arrangement forced into Mira and Cassie’s life for reproductive and political reasons. He presents as controlled and compliant, but his private entitlement and suspicious behavior reveal that he is not safe. Mira has denied him true family access, and Cassie now sees him as a threat.
Taryx is a dragonkin Shroud operator, Mira’s former predatory “relief” during her spiral, and the architect of the obedience brand in her body. During the final confrontation of Daughters of Starveil, he used that brand to hold Mira trapped and forced to watch while he fought and nearly killed Seara, helping drive the circumstances that led to Mira’s untethered Ascension. After Mira returned, she used her magic to hold him in place and forced him to watch as Naomi killed him. He is dead, but the damage he inflicted on Mira, Seara, Naomi, and countless others continues to shape the people who survived him.
Vere Acheson is a blood priest tied to Lireal’s Stonebound Curse, Stormrune experimentation, corrupted Ascension knowledge, and Cassie’s trauma. He is dangerous because he has information several people desperately need.
Duchess Zyrella Thornsflame is Duchess of Thornspire and one of Mira’s major political enemies in Summer. She supports old-law structures and has helped weaponize arrangements against Starveil’s women, including Kael’s placement with Maelion. She is beautiful, venomous, politically organized, and terrified that Mira’s rise proves old bloodline superiority was never enough.
Auren is Cassie’s dangerous assassin mentor. Seara arranged for Auren to notice Cassie after the pits because she believed Cassie needed to become harder to kill if she was going to survive loving Mira. Auren is useful, brilliant, cruel in ways that work, and potentially someone Cassie will eventually have to outgrow or defy.
Maera Sloane is a legal and administrative operator tied to the missing children. She appears to make children administratively portable through wardship corrections, school transfers, protective review language, and paperwork that makes kidnapping look procedural. She is a live thread connecting the missing children investigation to the legal machinery beneath the Shroud’s operations.
Nessa is a rescued captive connected to the Shadeworks vault mission and Chula’s ongoing survivor work. Her rescue is one of the reminders that the cell’s missions are not only about evidence and revenge, but also about getting living people out.
Important Ongoing Threads
The missing children investigation remains one of the central active threads. Mira, Naomi, Elias’s task force, and others have been tracking how children were taken through official-sounding language, school forms, protective reviews, and wardship paperwork.
The Obsidian Conclave mystery links Asteria, true Ascension, Drakenblood history, the Veil, ancient dragons, and Mira’s future. The current cast does not fully understand the deeper enemy structure yet, but the ruins have made it clear that Mira’s Ascension is no longer a distant abstraction.
Sunspire remains one of the most important household battlegrounds. Kael was placed there to be contained, but she has already begun challenging the assumptions that made Sunspire unsafe for its younger children.
Starveil itself is no longer only a lost city or hidden inheritance. It is becoming a home, a refuge, and a gathering place for the people who were never supposed to find one another.
