The silver light from Clara’s staff was blinding against the darkness of the forest. Twelve soldiers stood in a semi-circle, their shields overlapping, their spear tips trembling as they pointed them at the man they had cheered for only hours ago.

Kai stood at the mouth of the mine, his hand resting on the hilt of Sunbringer. Behind him, Leo stood like a ghost, his left arm still partially transparent, flickering like a dying candle.

Clara, Kai said, his voice echoing in the silence. You’re following the lines again. Can’t you feel the strings pulling at your wrists?Full novel: Role Stealer: The Script Executioner — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Clara’s jaw tightened. Her eyes were filled with a cold, desperate resolve. The strings aren’t the problem, Kai. You are. The Council saw what you did in the tent. They saw how you manipulated the Captain. You’re not a Hero. You’re a corruption.

And what does the Script say happens now? Kai asked, stepping forward. Do you kill the Villain and take back the sword? Does the story get back on track?

It’s not a story, Kai! It’s our lives! Clara shouted, her staff erupting in a flare of silver energy. Drop the sword and the relic. Now. Or I will be forced to use lethal magic.

Kai looked at the soldiers. Their Script Lines were pulsing with fear and uncertainty.

[Soldier #1: Loyalty - 40%. Fear - 90%.]

[Soldier #2: Scripted Role - Cannon Fodder.]

Do you really want to do this? Kai asked the soldiers. You saw what I did to Valerius. You saw what I did to the Matriarch. Do you think your shields can stop a man who can rewrite the air you breathe?

"Don’t listen to him!" Captain Harlock shouted from the back, his voice still shaky from the previous encounter. "He’s using forbidden arts! He’s a demon in Aidan’s skin!"

"Aidan is dead because he was too weak to break his role!" Kai roared, his voice carrying a Narrative Pressure that made the soldiers stumble back. "He died for a Script that didn’t care about him! And now you’re doing the same thing!"

Clara raised her staff. "Enough! Binding Light: Chains of Justice!"

Six chains of pure silver energy erupted from the ground, lashing out at Kai’s limbs. In the original Script, this was the moment where the ’Villain’ is captured, leading to a trial scene.

Kai didn’t move. He didn’t draw his sword. He reached into his pocket and gripped the red crystalline shard—the fragment of the Author’s True Name.

"Narrative Authority: Edit Scene," Kai whispered.

[Current Screen Time: 456 Hours -> 406 Hours.]

The silver chains didn’t touch him. They didn’t even reach him. They turned into ribbons of harmless silk mid-air, fluttering to the ground like confetti.

The soldiers gasped. Clara’s eyes widened in horror. "What... what did you do?"

"I changed the genre, Clara," Kai said, walking through the silk ribbons. "This isn’t a tragedy anymore. It’s a farce."

He walked straight up to Clara, the tip of her staff inches from his chest. She didn’t fire. Her hands were shaking so violently the staff was rattling.

"Shoot me," Kai challenged, his voice a low, dangerous hum. "Fire the magic. Complete the scene. Be the Executioner the Author wants you to be."

"I... I can’t..." Clara whispered, her eyes filling with tears. "Why can’t I move my hand?"

"Because your heart knows the lie, even if your magic doesn’t," Kai said.

He reached out and gently took the staff from her hand. She didn’t resist. She collapsed to her knees, sobbing into her hands. The soldiers looked at each other, their formation breaking. They weren’t soldiers anymore; they were just terrified men in the dark.

"Harlock," Kai called out, looking at the Captain. "Go back to the camp. Tell the Council that the Successor is gone. Tell them the Glitch is coming."

Harlock didn’t argue. He turned and ran, followed by the rest of the soldiers. They didn’t care about honor or duty anymore. They just wanted to be away from the man who could turn magic into silk.

Kai looked down at Clara. He felt a flicker of the old Kai—the scout who had a crush on the Hero’s sister. But that man was a ghost.

"Leo," Kai said, turning back to his friend. "Can you walk?"

"I... I think so," Leo said, his voice sounding distant, as if he were speaking from another room. "But Kai... I can’t feel my hand anymore."

Kai looked at Leo’s arm. It was almost gone now, just a faint outline of charcoal lines.

"We need to find the Special Guest," Kai said, his eyes turning to the forest. "The Auditor said he’s coming. If he’s from the final volume, he might have enough Presence to stabilize you."

"And if he doesn’t?" Leo asked.

"Then I’ll steal his," Kai said.

Suddenly, the forest went silent. The crickets stopped chirping. The wind died down. The very air seemed to become thick and heavy, like drying ink.

[Warning: The Special Guest has arrived.]

[Entity: The First Apostle of the End.]

[Level: ???]

A man stepped out from the shadows of the trees. He wasn’t wearing armor. He wore a simple, white robe, and his hair was as white as snow. He carried no weapon, but the ground withered beneath his feet.

He looked at Kai, and for the first time, Kai’s Script Insight didn’t just flicker—it shattered.

[Error: Narrative Level too high for Analysis.]

"So," the man said, his voice like the tolling of a funeral bell. "You are the one who is causing so much trouble for the Master."

"The Master?" Kai asked, gripping Sunbringer. "You mean the Author?"

"We do not use that name," the Apostle said, walking forward. "We call him the Architect. And I am here to ensure that his masterpiece is not ruined by a stray ink blot like you."

The Apostle raised a hand. He didn’t cast a spell. He didn’t move fast. But Kai felt a weight press down on him that was absolute. It was the weight of the ’Final Chapter.’ The weight of an ending that had already been written.

[Current Status: Scripted Defeat.]

[Warning: You cannot win this encounter.]

"Is that so?" Kai growled, struggling to stand under the pressure. "I’ve heard that before."

"You are a brave little glitch," the Apostle said, a cold, empty smile on his face. "But even a glitch must eventually be deleted."

He pointed a finger at Leo. "Let us start with the one who is already fading. A mercy killing, if you will."

"No!" Kai shouted.

He lunged forward, Sunbringer erupting in a desperate, golden flame. But the Apostle didn’t even look at him. He just flicked his wrist, and Kai was sent flying back, slamming into the stone entrance of the mine.

"Kai!" Clara screamed, finally finding her voice.

The Apostle ignored her. He was focused on Leo. A small, black dot appeared in the air in front of Leo’s chest—a ’Period’ at the end of a sentence.

"Goodbye, Background Character," the Apostle said.

"Narrative Authority!" Kai screamed from the rubble, his eyes bleeding from the strain. "Override! Sacrifice 200 hours! Protect the Shield!"

[Current Screen Time: 406 Hours -> 206 Hours.]

The black dot exploded, but instead of hitting Leo, it hit a shimmering, golden wall of text that appeared in front of him.

[System Message: The Shield is Protected by the Successor’s Life.]

The Apostle paused, his white eyebrows rising. "You would give up your very existence for a nobody? How... unheroic."

"He’s not a nobody," Kai wheezed, struggling to his feet. "He’s my friend. And in my story, the friends don’t die in the first act."

The Apostle sighed. "A pity. You had potential. But now, you have nothing left to burn."

He raised both hands, preparing for a final deletion. But before he could strike, the Auditor appeared between them.

"Wait," the Auditor said, his grey suit slightly wrinkled.

"Why do you interfere, Auditor?" the Apostle asked, his voice cold. "The Architect’s orders were clear."

"The Audience," the Auditor said, pointing to the sky. "Look at the ratings. The ’Sacrifice for a Friend’ trope has caused a massive surge in engagement. If you kill him now, the Audience will revolt. They want to see the ’Training Arc.’ They want to see him struggle with his dwindling time."

The Apostle looked up, his static eyes reflecting the unseen gods. He remained silent for a long moment.

"Fine," the Apostle said, lowering his hands. "He may live. For now. But the Script is now locked. No more rewrites, Kai. From this moment on, every hour you spend will be twice as hard. Let us see how long your ’Friendship’ lasts when the world itself turns against you."

The Apostle and the Auditor vanished in a swirl of silver and white light.

Kai collapsed, the golden sword falling from his hand. He looked at Leo, who was still there, but his entire left side was now just a faint, grey sketch.

[Current Screen Time: 206 Hours, 5 Minutes.]

[Status: Dying.]

Clara ran to him, her face pale. "Kai... what have you done? You’ve only got a few days left..."

Kai looked at her, then at the red shard still clutched in his hand.

"It’s enough," Kai whispered. "I have his name. And I have a plan."

He looked at the mine, then at the forest, then at the invisible eyes in the sky.

"The show isn’t over," Kai said, his voice a faint but determined growl. "We’re just going into overtime."
