The cold night air hit Kai’s face as he stepped out of the council tent, but it did little to cool the fire burning in his veins. His shoulder was still bleeding, a warm, sticky trail soaking into his tunic, but he ignored it. He was looking at the glowing blue screen that only he could see.
[Screen Time Remaining: 1006 Hours, 42 Minutes.]
[Narrative Tension: Critical.]
[Warning: The Script is generating a ’Villain’ to balance the scale.]
Kai! Wait!
Leo caught up to him, his breathing heavy. He stopped a few feet away, his hands trembling as he looked at Kai’s blood-stained shoulder.
That was... Kai, what was that? Leo’s voice was barely a whisper. You didn’t just fight Harlock. You did something to him. I saw his eyes. They weren’t human.
They were never human, Leo, Kai said, not stopping his stride. They were just puppets. Harlock was just a tool the Auditor used to try and delete me.
The Auditor? Puppets? Kai, you’re talking like a madman! Leo stepped in front of him, forcing him to stop. Look at me. We’ve been friends since the recruit camp. I’ve seen you trip over your own feet in practice. Now you’re taking down B-Rank bosses and fighting off possessed captains? Who are you?
I’m the guy who’s keeping you alive, Leo, Kai said, his eyes boring into Leo’s. If you want the old Kai back, go find a necromancer. He’s dead. He died the moment the first Shadow Beast touched the camp.
Leo recoiled as if he had been slapped. You’re cold. You’re acting like you don’t even care about us anymore.
I care about the ending, Leo. And in the ending I’m writing, you don’t die in a ditch for a hero who doesn’t exist. Now, get back to the perimeter. The Auditor isn’t done yet.
Leo opened his mouth to argue, but the look in Kai’s eyes silenced him. He turned and walked away, his shoulders slumped in defeat.
[Audience Reaction: Tense! "He’s pushing everyone away!" / "He has to! It’s the only way to save them!"]
Kai continued toward the edge of the camp, where the darkness of the forest met the flickering light of the barrier. He could feel another presence nearby.
You can come out now, Clara, Kai said. I know you’ve been following me.
Clara stepped out from behind a large oak tree. Her staff was glowing with a soft, silver light, but her face was a mask of suspicion.
You didn’t answer them in the tent, Kai, Clara said. You said you had the key to the cage. What cage?
This world, Clara, Kai said, gesturing to the sky. Look up. What do you see?
I see the stars, she replied. I see the constellations that guide our magic.
I see a ceiling, Kai said. I see a bunch of bored gods watching us like we’re ants in a jar. And I see a Script that says you’re supposed to fall in love with me because I have your brother’s sword.
Clara’s face flushed red, a mix of anger and embarrassment. That’s... that’s absurd! I don’t... I don’t feel anything like that!
Don’t you? Kai stepped closer, his Presence flaring just enough to make her breath catch. The Script is strong, Clara. It influences your thoughts, your heart, your magic. It wants you to be the ’Tragic Love Interest.’ It wants you to cry when I eventually die.
I’m not a character in a book, Kai! I’m a person! Clara shouted, her staff sparking with silver energy.
Then prove it, Kai challenged. Do something that isn’t written. Walk away from me. Stop following the Successor. Go lead the survivors on your own.
Clara opened her mouth to speak, but the words seemed to die in her throat. She looked down at her hands, her expression crumbling into confusion. I... I can’t. The people need a leader. They need the Successor.
Exactly, Kai said, turning back to the forest. You’re trapped, just like the rest of them.
Suddenly, a massive explosion rocked the northern side of the camp. The ground groaned, and the golden barrier flickered violently before turning a sickly shade of violet.
[Alert: The ’Villain’ has entered the Scene.]
[Event: The Massacre of the First Act.]
Kai! The barrier! Clara screamed, her staff erupting in light.
Go to the center of the camp! Kai commanded. Protect the survivors! Leo! Get the archers to the walls!
Kai! What about you? Leo shouted, running back toward them.
I’m going to meet the new guy, Kai said.
He sprinted toward the northern gate. As he approached, he saw the destruction. The heavy iron gates had been torn off their hinges as if they were made of paper. Standing in the center of the breach was a figure that made Kai’s Script Insight scream in warning.
[Villain: Valerius the Black - Level 45.]
[Role: The Successor’s Rival. The One who brings Despair.]
Valerius was tall, clad in jagged black plate armor that seemed to bleed shadows. He held a massive two-handed claymore that pulsed with a dark, necrotic energy. He wasn’t a puppet like Harlock. He was a ’Main Character’ of the dark side.
"So," Valerius said, his voice a deep, resonant rumble that shook the air. "The Script said there was a new Hero. I expected something... more."
Kai stopped ten paces away, Sunbringer glowing in his hand. "Valerius. The Auditor sent you, I assume?"
Valerius tilted his head, his eyes glowing like embers behind his visor. "The Auditor? I know no such name. I am here because the prophecy demanded a shadow to match the light. And you, little light, look very dim."
"Prophecy, Script, it’s all the same trash," Kai said, his eyes scanning Valerius for a weak point.
[Script Insight: Valerius’s attack is scripted to kill 20% of the camp in the next 10 minutes.]
"You talk a lot for a dead man," Valerius said.
He moved. It wasn’t a run; it was a teleportation of pure violence. The black claymore swung in a wide arc, sending a wave of necrotic energy toward Kai.
Kai leaped into the air, Sunbringer meeting the black blade. The impact was like a mountain falling on him. He was sent skidding back, his boots carving deep furrows in the earth.
"Strong," Kai muttered, his arms numbing.
"Is that all?" Valerius laughed, his shadows expanding until they covered the entire gate area. "The Audience is bored, Hero. Show me why you stole that sword."
Valerius lunged again, a flurry of strikes that Kai could barely parry. Each collision felt like his bones were about to shatter. The difference in Level was too high. This wasn’t a fight he was supposed to win yet.
[Audience Reaction: Hyped! "Finally, a real fight!" / "Kai is getting crushed!"]
"Leo! Clara! Get back!" Kai shouted as he saw them approaching from the side.
"We won’t leave you!" Leo shouted, raising his shield.
"You’re part of the massacre!" Kai roared. "If you stay here, the Script will kill you to make me ’Awaken’! Run!"
But it was too late. Valerius noticed them. A cruel smile spread across his hidden face.
"Ah, the supporting cast," Valerius said. "Let’s see how much light remains when I snuff out your friends."
Valerius raised his hand, and a storm of shadow spears formed in the air, aimed directly at the huddle of survivors and soldiers behind Leo.
"No!" Kai shouted.
He looked at the Screen Time meter. He had over a thousand hours. It was time for a massive gamble.
"System!" Kai screamed in his mind. "Burn 500 hours of Screen Time! Skill Evolution: Script Insight to Narrative Authority!"
[Alert: Extreme consumption detected!]
[Evolution initiated... Success!]
[New Skill: Narrative Authority (Temporary Rank: S)]
The world slowed to a crawl. The shadow spears frozen in mid-air. Valerius’s mocking laugh was a slow, deep vibration. Kai saw the lines of the world, but they weren’t just text anymore. They were physical threads he could reach out and touch.
He grabbed the thread connected to Valerius’s attack and twisted it.
"Redirect," Kai whispered.
The world snapped back to full speed. The shadow spears didn’t fly toward Leo. They turned 180 degrees and slammed into Valerius himself.
*BOOM!*
Valerius was caught off guard, his own dark magic exploding against his armor. He was thrown back into the forest, his shadows dissipating in a cloud of dust.
Kai fell to his knees, his vision blurring. His Screen Time was plummeting.
[Current Screen Time: 506 Hours.]
"Kai!" Clara ran to him, catching him before he hit the ground. "What did you do? The spears... they just turned!"
"I... I changed the lines," Kai wheezed, his body feeling like it was made of lead.
Valerius stood up in the distance, his armor cracked, his aura more unstable but even more furious. "You... you cheated! That wasn’t a skill! What are you?"
"I’m the guy who’s ending your show, Valerius," Kai said, struggling to stand with Clara’s help.
Valerius growled, but before he could lunge again, a silver light descended between them. The Auditor appeared, his grey suit pristine, his notebook open.
"Enough," the Auditor said. "The scene is corrupted. Valerius, retreat. The Audience is confused by this development. We need to re-evaluate the plot."
Valerius looked like he wanted to argue, but the silver aura of the Auditor was absolute. He sheathed his claymore and vanished into the shadows.
The Auditor looked at Kai, his static eyes showing a hint of something that might have been respect—or extreme annoyance. "You burned half your life for one move, Kai. Was it worth it?"
Kai looked at Leo and Clara, who were safe. He looked at the survivors who hadn’t been massacred.
"Every second," Kai said.
"We will see," the Auditor said, fading away. "The next Chapter is called ’The Price of the Rewrite.’ I hope you’re ready to pay."
As the Auditor vanished, Kai collapsed completely. The last thing he saw was Clara’s worried face and the blue screen flickering one final message.
[Alert: You have survived the Villain’s Debut.]
[Warning: The Author is now ’Actively Hostile.’]
