16 Years later...
It was in the dead of the cold windy night.
The room was dark, safe for the light of the full moon peeping through the translucent paper sliding doors.
Ohta slept peacefully on his shikibuton (a foldable mattress).
And then a shadow obstructed the light.
Ohta opened his eyes. ’Really? They came again!?’
Just as the shadow had obstructed the light flowing in, it dissolved into the earth.
Then like flowing ink, it moved towards the shikibuton.
And then it materialized into a person, face and body parts covered in black clothing.
This assassin leaned over the bedding, a dagger in hand.
They could see it. Their target slept peacefully. Covered completely by the blanket.
They stabbed down.
Again and again.
But the familiar sensation of knife through flesh did not come.
And then they pulled the blanket open.
Pillows. Only pillows
Click...
A pistol CLICKED against the assassin’s temple.
"Don’t you idiots get tired?" Ohta lamented.
Boom.
The gun shot alerted the guards outside and the lights in the compound came to life.
"The shot came from young master Ohta’s room."
They hurried towards Ohta’s room.
"Huh!? Again?" A guard lamented.
The others sighed.
"This is like what... the twenty eighth time this month alone?"
"Oh heavens... the chief is going to punish us again." Another guard lamented. "Why do we have to be so unlucky and be assigned as body guards to the most useless heir in the Iga clan?"
A figure suddenly appeared from nowhere, SMACKING the guard in the head.
"How dare you talk about my sweet precious grand son like that."
It was elderly woman dressed in a red overall kimono.
The sight of her made all the guards lower their heads.
"It’s the Great Poison Elder!"
"We greet the Great Poison Elder!" They said in unison.
Even though they said this, they were literally begging their legs not to run.
The rumors of the Great Poison Elder were horror stories told at bedtime to keep children of the clan in line.
Without another word, she strolled confidently, and then with a wave of her hand—not touching the door—using mana, she opened the sliding door.
By the mattress was splashed ink everywhere.
"This boy. He is in a ninja clan, but still uses guns despite my warnings." She sighed at this.
Just above the mattress were tally marks on the wall.
On them was titled: Assassination Attempts On My Life.
She counted.
"Oh... it’s 37 already." She massaged her aged jaw. "If I am not mistaking, thirty of those attempts alone are within the last month. The other heirs must be getting really desperate for the clan chief position."
She noticed something, and turned to the guards. "Where is young master Ohta?"
They looked at each other—puzzled.
Just then another guard rushed over. "Emergency...Young master Ohta is on top the Sacred tower. Apparently he has a knife to his face. We believe he is about to destroy his Devil eyes..."
"What!?" The Great Poison Elder turned, ’that reckless child. He is really going through with that plan.’
She rushed out of the room with speed and agility only a ten year old should have.
Meanwhile, Ohta stood, shirtless at the peak of the sacred tower. His lean muscular frame and his pale skin reflected the light of the full moon in beautiful otherworldly arcs.
His white hair and blue eyes was the cherry on the cake.
"Come on Kingly lesson system. Give me something. Anything. It has been sixteen years already."
[Ding]
[Note: The Kingly Lesson System needs Territory To Function]
//All Facilities and Stats locked until host builds himself and finds a Territory to govern//
Ohta sighed. It was still the same message it has always been for the last sixteen years. And here he was thinking that this new life the system forced on him would come with more perks.
"Well, if you won’t help me, I’ll just do it myself." A blade danced in between his fingers and he brought it to his eyes.
He looked below. The Great Bleeding Elder, The Great Suffering Elder, and of course, The Great Poison Elder.
Aside the Great Poison Elder, the others had simply sent their shadow forms. One like flowing blood, and the other like stabbed knife’s protruding from a body.
The sight of the Great Poison Elder made his expression soften a bit. But he hardened again.
"Ohta, what do you think you are doing?" The Great Bleeding elder asked.
"I know you are all far stronger than me." Ohta spoke loud and clear.
"But I also know how your power works. I know that this Sacred temple will negate your mana even before you reach me.
And by then," he pointed the knife closer to his left eye, "I would have destroyed the only Devil eyes to have appeared in the last 1000 years."
The shadows visibly shook at the threat.
"You wouldn’t dare." The Great Suffering Elder Challenged.
"Just because you were born with the sacred Devil eyes, you think we will give in to your threats?
You... a worthless heir born with no Mana veins. You are lucky we even tolerated your trash existence till now." The Great Bleeding Elder clapped in support.
The Great Poison Elder simply looked at Ohta hoping. "My little snow," she called. "How about you come down here and we talk about this.
If it’s the assassination attempts on your life. You have to understand the kind of clan you are born into. Assassination attempts are practically like breathing."
"It’s not that." Ohta sighed, "I am sorry Gran Gran. I have made up my mind. I will not leave this place until my demands are met."
"What demands?" She asked.
Ohta took a deep breath in and out. "I want to go to school."
"School!?" All three elders asked in surprise.
Ohta nodded. "Yes, I want to go to high school."
The elders looked at each other at a loss for words.
But then a loud laughter that seemed to shake the earth was heard. "Good! Good!! Now you are behaving like a child of my Iga Ninja Clan... To threaten your superiors with what they hold most dear."
He was nowhere in sight, but everybody knew who it was.
"I, Utada The Terrible, GRANT YOUR REQUEST!"
......
*HONK* HONK*
The driver signaled with the car horn to wake Ohta up.
He sat up in the car. He had been having those weird bloody dreams of his former life again.
He peeped through the limousine window.
After five hours on the road, they finally made it to the school.
Which in his own opinion was right dead in the middle of nowhere.
There it was, written in big bold words on the humongous gates: AVALON HIGHSCHOOL.
Although Ohta was not one to judge, he really couldn’t help but notice that the walls and gates of this school were at least a hundred feet high.
That was not really a problem for him. He had come to accept stranger things in this new earth.
Like how certain creatures were capable of flight without wings, or the strange energy called mana that everybody could use except him.
But to say Ohta was not nervous would be far stretch from the truth.
He had never been to Highschool before. Not in this life or the last.
After living a questionable life in the other world, he now had the opportunity to start again.
This time, however, was going to be different. At least that was what he told himself.
This was the first time he was leaving the territory of the Iga clan and into the outside world.
A world that was at least seven times the size of his previous earth, but somehow still managed to have all seven continents with similar histories, and the only difference being a lot of mystical and mythologically insane things becoming reality here.
Who wouldn’t be nervous?
Anyone that had lived a hustling life on the streets for a long time through hardship and pain would naturally understand the value he had for education and the experience of a normal life.
It also served as an escape from the hatred of his elder brothers that wanted to become chief—a position Ohta had no interest in.
Many elders agreed.
Ohta could no longer learn the techniques of the clan because of his inability to use mana.
In fact, the few he learnt were thanks to his abnormally high comprehension as an adult in his former world.
In a world were everything operated by mana, he was practically a walking breathing failure to the clan.
And that kind of person was to become clan chief?
It was no wonder the assassination attempts had become more brutal.
But Utada, his father, was a very stubborn man, and only wanted Ohta to rule.
Leaving it all behind was Ohta’s only solution.
Ohta came down from the car in his new school uniform, his luggage in hand, and a smile on his face.
He stared at the car’s side mirror to fix his appearance.
The most striking of his features was his white hair, falling loosely over sky blue eyes.
Ohta was aware that with the addition of his pale skin, sharp-jawed cheeks, thin pale pink lips, he was devastatingly handsome.
Even his former life would have been jealous.
He wore the school uniform of Avalon high school, a black coat over a white inner shirt, a yellow tie he wore loosely, and black well tailored trousers.
"I look good." Ohta smiled.
The moment he turned, and proceeded to the school gate, the clan car that had brought him immediately ZOOMED off into the distance.
"Huh!"
For a second there, he felt as if the driver had been panicking, and desperately wanted to leave this place.
The way he sped off was similar to someone running for his life, and Ohta should know, he had been in quite a few car-chases in his old world.
He simply shrugged it off.
Apart from the gate in front of him, there was nothing behind but an empty desert. Ohta sighed loudly, "There is no turning back now, I guess."
He proceeded to the gate.
A holographic screen suddenly appeared before his eyes.
It showed a single arrow pointing to the side of the gate.
Ohta followed the direction. On the side of the gate was a slab with a palm print. Apparently, this was where he was supposed to do the signing.
A mechanical voice spoke, "please place your palm on the slab."
He did as instructed.
*pierce*
"Ouch!" A needle pierced into his palm and he reflexively retracted it. On the Palm print was a drop of his blood which was quickly absorbed.
The sight of blood excited something within him, and his blue eyes flashed a brief crimson.
Ohta gritted his teeth, closing his eyes tight to hold it back.
"This assholes. Couldn’t you have put up a warning sign?" He sighed.
He had won the internal battle—this time.
"Ohta Waterfell. Admission records updated.
You have been registered as a student, please enjoy your stay."
The mechanical voice announced as the huge gates opened.
Creak...
A sight like nothing Ohta had ever seen before. Like the difference between heaven and earth.
Out the gate was a desert but inside the School was lush bustling world with green flora.
It was so large, it looked like a mini city.
There were high-raised buildings and busy streets with vendors on either side. It was really a marvel to behold.
Everything looked colorful and automated. Holographic screens advertise products at nearly every point.
Since coming to this world, Ohta had never left the clan home.
This was the first time, and it was really becoming an adventurous experience for him.
He wanted to enjoy the sight and explore.
But then he heard it.
[Ding]
[Avalon High School, has been recognized as territory by the Kingly Lesson System.]
[System Stats and facilities have been unlocked]
Ohta’s eyes widened.
He stood completely still for a moment. Sixteen years. The kingly lesson system had been silent for sixteen years.
He had tried again and again, but it did not respond.
But the moment he entered this school, it responded?
Ohta could not wait to check it out, but not here. Also, there were other important things to do.
He brought out his cell phone to check the admission email from the school.
He was late for the semester by an entire month, and today was a very important day.
Mid-semester tests.
Ohta quickly asked for directions, making his way to the classroom area.
"Get out of my way fatso!" a bully and his three friends pushed a short fat boy to the side. The fat boy’s books fell to the ground.
The fat boy apologized to the bullies as he picked up his books.
The bullies chuckled as they walked away, "Weak fool."
Ohta was passing when he saw this, and although he wanted to just mind his business and leave, he had promised himself he would do better in this life.
Ohta sighed.
Pulling his luggage towards the fat boy, he took a knee, helping him pick up the books from the ground.
’The Principle Of Face Changing.’
’How To Steal Another’s Face.’
’How To Steal Another’s Life.’
All the books had these weird titles.
"Thank you very much!" The fat boy said politely.
"Naa! it’s no problem at all," Ohta replied, removing what he saw from his mind.
Minding his business was a useful skill he prided himself in.
The boy’s eyes found Ohta’s luggage behind him. "Are you new?"
"Yeah I am," scratching the back of his head, "Very obvious, right? Starting school mid semester." He chuckled in embarrassment.
"Also, I think I might be a bit... lost."
"Oh! that tends to happen a lot around here. It’s not easy with the size of the place."
"Yeah! it’s not at all. At this rate, I’m going to be late for my first class." Ohta sighed.
"What class are you going to?"
"Class 1a."
"Oh! You are in Battle Class too?"
"Battle class!?" Ohta raised a brow.
"That’s what we call it. Don’t worry, I’ll take you there. I’m heading there too. That’s my class.
By the way, My name is Timi. What’s yours?"
"I’m Ohta." Ohta introduced himself.
The two shook hands and Timi proceeded to show Ohta first to the locker room in order for him to drop his luggage and then the both of them headed to class.
As they walked and talked. Ohta noticed a little yellow patch that looked like a small umbrella on Timi’s neck.
Now that he thought about it, those bullies that passed earlier on also had something similar on their necks. Except that their patch was green colored.
Ohta managed to make it to class just before the class was to begin.
...
"Ladies and Gentlemen, although we have already gone a month into the semester, we have a new student with us today."
The teacher introduced Ohta to the class.
"It’s nice to meet you all," Ohta bowed in greeting.
"That’s good! I am Miss Carol, your Homeroom teacher. You can make introductions with the rest of the class later. We are on a tight schedule today. Take a seat over there," Miss Carol directed Ohta to an empty seat right in the middle of the class.
Ohta thanked her and proceeded to take his seat.
From watching those anime shows about high school, Ohta assumed there would be stares or mocking laughter.
But no one paid him any attention.
’Maybe it’s because of the test.’ Ohta thought to himself.
After all, the atmosphere was tense.
And the class was far more spacious than Ohta thought was needed.
The actual class with its chairs and tables covered only one-third of the class. The other two-thirds was just an open space.
That was not all. Ohta noticed that the class had students of all races. In fact, many of them had adjusted their school uniforms in such a way as to fit their various cultural backgrounds.
Some had their sleeves torn out, one or two people had masks of different kinds covering their faces and lastly, there was even this one guy with a pumpkin on his head.
He also noticed that just like Timi, all of the students of the class had the same yellow patch on various parts of their school uniform.
"Maybe it’s a trend," Ohta thought to himself.
He took his seat.
Coincidentally, Timi sat close by—on his left side.
On his right was a blonde haired girl. She looked cheerful, kind, carrying an attractive demeanor about her.
Such a situation was comfortable for Ohta.
He and Timi were already acquainted with one another.
As the Homeroom teacher said, he could become acquainted with the others later.
"Ladies and gentlemen, the test will now begin," Miss Carol announced.
Ohta brought out a notebook and a pen. This was a test he was already expecting.
He had already been informed that the test was a compulsory one, regardless if he was a new student or not.
And so like any intelligent person with good foresight, he had prepared from home. The internet had been his surfing board for every subject relating to his Highschool grade.
He only had a week to prepare, and had read every day just to ensure he did not embarrass himself when the results came out.
Ohta smiled knowing that he was prepared to solve any question thrown at him.
"This test will be for ten minutes. There will be no cheating and it will be conducted as fair as possible," the teacher informed. "The use of mana is also prohibited.
"Remember, first place gets 50 yellow points. Second to ninth will get twenty yellow points each and the rest of the class will have 5 yellow points. Your time starts now!"
The teacher turned and walked out the door.
This caught Ohta by surprise.
’Huh! She forgot to pass out the question papers? Why is she leaving the class? Is it an open test?’
These questions plagued his mind.
But what happened next, was a bigger surprise.
The walls of the class suddenly opened up, revealing weapons of all types. There were guns, swords, boomerangs, chains, ninja stars, staffs etc.
The students immediately rushed for the weapons, and before Ohta knew it, everyone in the class had weapons pointed at each other—their eyes spelling out the fate of their own classmates even before the venom of their weapons.
Death.
A thought suddenly came to his head,
"SHIT!!! This is not a NORMAL school!? That old man tricked me..."
