Two days north of the valley, the crackle of dried pine logs was the only sound breaking the evening chill as Adam Hale stepped past the granite boulder.
His boots made no sound on the loose shale, but a shift in the wind carried his presence toward the barricade. The four Blood-Feather cultivators froze mid-laugh, their hands dropping to the bone-hilted sabers at their waists.
"Who goes there?" the patrol leader barked, rising to his feet. He was a scarred man with a missing left ear and the murky eyes of someone who had been stuck at the 3rd Layer of Qi Condensation for a decade. "State your sect or drop your arms!"
Adam didn’t stop walking. Beneath the shade of his cloak, the Hidden Fortune Aura pressed his Foundation Establishment energy down to the faint, flickering pulse of a sickly 1st-Layer weakling.
The patrol leader squinted, then let out a coarse, raspy laugh. "Look at this trash. Senior Brother’s squad must have missed a stray dog crawling out of the ditch."
"Wait, look at his robes," another member muttered, leaning forward with narrowed eyes. "Those aren’t refugee rags. That silk looks finer than what the City Lord wears."
Greed replaced caution in an instant. The leader drew his notched saber, the steel humming with a thin, dirty red Qi light.
"Hand over the robes and whatever pouches you snatched off the dead, kid," he sneered, taking a heavy step forward. "Do it on your knees, and maybe I’ll make you a mine slave instead of feeding you to the mountain wolves."
Adam stopped three paces outside the firelight. He looked over the four men, his expression free of anger or excitement. He was simply running the numbers.
Four cultivators. Low cultivation. No spatial rings, only coarse leather pouches. Zero tactical value.
"Your Senior Brother is dead," Adam said softly, his voice cutting through the wind like a cold blade. "His pouch is in my robe. Do you want it back?"
The leader’s smile died. "What did you say?"
"He said you’re next, idiot!" the second cultivator roared, lunging forward with his saber raised in a heavy overhead chop.
The strike was fast for a Qi Condensation cultivator, but to Adam’s Sovereign Sword God Physique it looked like a snail crawling through molasses. He could see every flaw in the man’s footing, every leak of Qi at the elbow, and three different ways to end his life before the blade reached its apex.
Adam didn’t bother drawing a sword. He simply activated the Shadow-Stealth Movement Technique.
Swish.
His body vanished, leaving behind a faint blue afterimage. The saber sliced through empty air and buried itself in the dirt.
"Where—"
Before the man could pull his weapon free, Adam materialized directly behind him. He raised his hand, two fingers pressed together like a blade, and drove a microscopic thread of Heaven-Shaking Sword Intent into the base of the man’s neck.
Pfft.
A needle-thin beam of compressed sword-light drilled through the man’s spine and burst out of his throat. He collapsed like a puppet with its strings cut, eyes wide and lifeless before his body hit the grass.
[Target eliminated. Battle analysis: Minimal Qi expended.]
The remaining three stumbled back, their faces the color of chalk.
"Phantom footwork?! Sword Intent without a blade?!" the leader shrieked, his saber trembling in his grip. "You’re no Qi Condensation trash! Who are you?!"
"Someone who hates clutter," Adam replied calmly.
He shifted his weight. Shadow-Stealth!
He blurred across the campfire. The air groaned as three sharp, invisible sword-arcs flared in the darkness like falling stars.
Slice. Slice. Slice.
Silence returned to the canyon.
Adam appeared on the far side of the fire, casually shaking a drop of dark blood from his index finger. Behind him, three heads rolled off their shoulders in unison, followed by the heavy thud of three torsos. The fire hissed as blood splashed across the embers.
He didn’t waste a second feeling proud. He stepped over the bodies and knelt to strip their storage pouches with quick, practiced movements.
[Inventory Audit: Patrol Squad Pouches]
Mortal-Grade Spirit Stones (Low-Tier): 85 pieces.
Basic Iron Sabers: 4 items (Mortal-Grade, low purity).
Inferior Healing Salve: 5 cracked wooden bottles.
Blood-Feather Sect Token: 1 iron pass badge.
Map Supplement: Detailed map of Black-Stone Outpost’s internal guard shifts.
’Eighty-five spirit stones plus the previous forty-two makes one hundred and twenty-seven,’ Adam calculated, sweeping the items into a single pouch tied to his sash. ’Not enough for high-tier pills, but plenty to rent a private cultivation chamber in the outpost.’
He kicked dirt over the campfire, plunging the barricade into darkness, and faded into the night toward Black-Stone Outpost.
An hour later, the steep mountain trail opened into a wide, rocky basin lit by the dull orange glow of iron lanterns.
Black-Stone Outpost.
It was less a town than a fortress built into the side of a dead volcano. High black-stone walls enclosed hundreds of cramped wooden shacks, open-air markets, and lawless gambling dens. Thousands of rogue cultivators, outcast clan disciples, and black-market merchants crowded the streets, trading beast materials and stolen pills beneath the indifferent gaze of patrols hired by the local Merchant Guild.
Adam approached the main gate with his cloak pulled low, hiding the fine silk beneath it.
Two guard captains in iron breastplates barred the entrance with long spears. "Entry fee is two silver coins or half a low-tier spirit stone. No fighting in the market district unless you pay the arena fee."
Adam tossed two silver coins into the guard’s palm without looking up. The guard flipped them, tested their weight, and waved him through.
A wave of noise, sweat, and roasted beast meat hit him as he stepped onto the crowded stone street. Cultivators of every level shoved past one another, some boasting scars and heavy broadswords, others in subtle silk robes that hid poison daggers.
Every one of them carried a faint scent of blood. This was a place where strength was currency and mercy was a mental illness.
Adam threaded through the narrow alleys, guided by Lin Chen’s fragmented memories, to the Golden-Spire Inn, an establishment run by an independent merchant guild that guaranteed privacy and security for a price.
In the quiet lobby, he set ten low-tier spirit stones on the wooden counter.
"Top-grade quiet room with an isolation array. Three days," he said flatly.
The fat innkeeper eyed the glowing stones, his small eyes flashing with greed before he swept them into a drawer. "Second floor, room seven. The array blocks spiritual sensing from anyone below the Golden Core realm. No one will disturb you, young master."
Adam took the iron key token and went straight up the stairs.
Inside Room Seven, the noise of the streets vanished the moment the key turned in the lock. A faint blue barrier hummed across the walls, sealing the room from heat, sound, and external Qi scans.
Adam sat cross-legged on the jade-embedded meditation mat at the center of the room, took a deep breath, and let the tension of the day melt away as he turned his attention inward.
He opened his status panel.
[Host: Adam Hale (Lin Chen)]
[Physique: Primordial Chaos Supreme Physique / Sovereign Sword God Physique]
[Cultivation Realm: Peak Foundation Establishment]
[Cultivation Manual: Ever-Ending Void Scripture]
[Abilities: Heaven-Shaking Sword Intent (Max), Shadow-Stealth Movement (Earth Grade), God-Grade Alchemy Mastery]
[Inventory: Slaughtering Immortal Sword (Sealed), Robes of the Eternal Star, 117 Low-Tier Spirit Stones]
’Peak Foundation Establishment,’ Adam thought, feeling the dense, liquid Chaos energy circulate through his pristine meridians. ’In Cloud-Resting City, the patriarchs of the three major families are only at the Middle or Late Foundation Establishment. I already out-cultivate the elders who left Lin Chen to die.’
His gaze turned cold.
’Lin Chen’s cousin, Lin Feng, broke into the 8th Layer of Qi Condensation last month, and the clan hailed him as a once-in-a-decade genius. If they knew I reached Peak Foundation Establishment in ten seconds, those old fools would tear out their own beards.’
Ding!
A soft, crystalline chime echoed in his mind as the mechanical clock in his soul struck midnight.
[Notice: Daily Sign-In refreshed!]
[Current Location: Black-Stone Outpost (Golden-Spire Inn, Spirit Array Room).]
[Would the Host like to perform today’s Daily Sign-In?]
Adam smiled slightly. "Sign in."
[Sign-In Successful!]
[Location Bonus Applied: Merchant Guild Resource Node detected.]
[Congratulations to the Host! You have received: Immortal-Grade Alchemy Cauldron (Nine-Dragon Flame Furnace)!]
FLASH!
A heavy bronze cauldron the size of a washbasin materialized in the center of the room and settled onto the floor with a low, deep thud. Nine intricately carved metal dragons coiled around its body, jaws open and glowing with faint crimson spirit flames.
Adam leaned forward, his eyes gleaming with cold, calculating interest.
’God-Grade Alchemy Mastery from the ten draws, and now an Immortal-Grade cauldron from a daily sign-in...’ He ran his fingers along the cold bronze rim. ’Selling raw spirit stones is a peasant’s game. Refining high-grade pills and steering the outpost’s economy? That’s how I buy this entire region.’
