The morning sun broke over the volcanic crags of Black-Stone Outpost, casting a dull copper glare across the quiet room.

Adam Hale sat cross-legged on his meditation mat, his breath steady and deep. The thread of Chaos-Devouring Fire in his dantian hummed softly, utterly submissive to his will. After a full night of silent cultivation, his Peak Foundation Establishment dantian had stabilized into a dense, golden ocean of liquid Qi, swirling with black and silver light.

He opened his eyes. The room’s isolation array flickered and died as the spirit stones powering its wall nodes crumbled into gray dust.Full novel: Sign-In System: Starting with Ten Draws — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

’The array has run dry,’ Adam thought, rising smoothly to his feet. He straightened the lapels of his heavy blue robes and settled the patched gray cloak over his shoulders. ’Time to move.’

He left the Golden-Spire Inn without causing a ripple. The fat innkeeper bowed low as Adam crossed the lobby, not daring to speak. Word had already spread through Black-Stone Outpost like wildfire: an enigmatic grandmaster alchemist had appeared out of nowhere, supplied the Treasure-Gathering Pavilion with ten-tenths-purity Supreme Pills, and vanished into the shadows.

Outside, the air was crisp and smelled faintly of sulfur. Adam pulled his hood low and blended into the early crowd of rogue cultivators and trade caravans heading out through the south gate.

The dirt road south ran fifty miles across flat, barren scrubland. Caravans of iron ore, spirit herbs, and monster hides crawled along under heavy mercenary escort.

Adam walked alone along the tree line beside the road. His pace seemed slow, almost casual, yet every step followed the subtle principles of the Shadow-Stealth Movement Technique. His boots barely touched the gravel, and he slid past the loaded wagons without drawing a single guard’s gaze.

’The Lin Clan spent twelve hundred spirit stones yesterday,’ Adam calculated as he moved through the dappled shade. ’Lin Kuang believes those ten Supreme-Grade Spirit-Liquefying Pills will let his grandson, Lin Feng, break through to the 9th Layer of Qi Condensation before the Great Void Sect’s recruitment trials.’

A cold sneer touched his lips.

’What old Kuang doesn’t know is that a body trained on trash herbs cannot absorb ten-tenths purity without violent backlash. Purity without a matching physique isn’t medicine. It’s poison.’

As the sun reached its zenith, Adam left the main road for a narrow shortcut through Red-Pine Ravine. The high granite cliffs blocked the wind and plunged the pass into cool, damp shade.

Snap.

A dry twig broke somewhere ahead.

Adam stopped thirty paces from a bend in the ravine path. He didn’t draw a weapon or flex his aura. He simply stood in the center of the trail, his hands tucked into his wide sleeves.

Three figures stepped out from behind a fallen pine.

They wore high-collared crimson leather tunics embroidered with blood-drenched eagle talons. The man in the center carried a heavy two-handed iron executioner’s broadsword, his gaze sharp and brimming with killing intent. He was at the 8th Layer of Qi Condensation, a true inner-sect officer of the Blood-Feather Sect.

"So the report was accurate," the officer growled, resting the broadsword on his shoulder. "A rogue kid in fine blue robes, leaving the Golden-Spire Inn alone on foot."

Adam looked at the three men, his expression blank. "You’re blocking the road."

"Hand over your storage pouch and state your connection to the Treasure-Gathering Pavilion," the officer demanded, taking a heavy step forward. Qi hummed along his iron blade and kicked up dust around his boots. "Our sect lost two border patrols near Ghost Valley this week. Senior Brother’s squad vanished without a trace, and their missing tokens match the timeline of your arrival."

"They died because they talked too much," Adam replied plainly. "You’re about to make the same mistake."

The officer’s face darkened. "Arrogant brat! Kill him!"

The two guards on his flanks lunged, their long iron sabers sweeping toward Adam’s neck in a cross-blade execution strike. Their movements were trained, lethal, and fast.

Adam didn’t even shift his footing.

Heaven-Shaking Sword Intent.

He didn’t raise a hand. He simply released a fraction of the sword intent dormant in his soul.

Clang! SHATTER!

Before the sabers came within three feet of him, the iron blades exploded into hundreds of jagged shards. The sheer pressure of the invisible sword intent tore through the guards’ leather armor like paper.

Pfft! Pfft!

Blood sprayed across the red pines as both guards dropped to their knees, throats punctured by compressed air, and fell sideways into the mud.

"What?!" the officer gasped, eyes bulging in horror. He stumbled back three steps, his broadsword trembling in his grip. "No Qi release... no weapon... pure Sword Intent?! You’re a Golden Core expert in disguise!"

"Wrong," Adam said softly, taking one calm step forward. "I’m the person who collects debts."

Swish.

Adam vanished.

The officer screamed and swung his broadsword in a wild circle around his body.

CRACK!

Adam materialized inside the officer’s guard, his right hand extended like a spear. His fingers, wreathed in a faint, light-swallowing black ember of Chaos-Devouring Fire, punched straight through the center of the iron broadsword and snapped the three-inch-thick metal in half like dry firewood!

His palm kept going and struck the officer square in the chest.

BOOM!

The black flame surged into the officer’s body. In less than half a second, his meridians, organs, and blood burned away from the inside out. Not a drop of blood touched Adam’s robes. The officer’s eyes turned gray and hollow, and his scorched, lifeless body hit the ground like a sack of coal.

Adam withdrew his hand and scanned the three dead men. He knelt and stripped their storage pouches and iron tokens with practiced speed.

"A hundred and ten stones," Adam muttered, tossing the empty pouches into the brush. "Acceptable."

He continued down the ravine, leaving the charred remains behind.

By late evening, the twin mountain peaks that guarded Cloud-Resting City loomed on the horizon like two giant stone sentinels. High gray granite walls enclosed a sprawling valley of tiled roofs, bustling market districts, and ancestral family estates.

Adam stood on a grassy hill three miles outside the northern gate, looking down at the city lights.

In the eastern quadrant sat the massive, walled compound of the Lin Clan, the place where Lin Chen had spent twenty-two years being starved, beaten, and finally discarded like trash. Its walls had been repaired since the beast attack, and lanterns burned along every gate. The clan had come home.

Adam adjusted his collar.

’Lin Kuang should have reached the compound with the pills by now,’ Adam thought, a cold, dark spark flashing in his eyes. ’The clan elders will be gathered in the ancestral hall to celebrate Lin Feng’s breakthrough.’

Ding!

At that moment, the familiar, cool chime echoed in his soul as midnight arrived.

FLASH!

A sharp, cool sensation washed over Adam’s eyes, and the world around him shifted.

The darkness of the night vanished, replaced by vivid, flowing streams of spiritual energy. He could see the hidden Qi veins beneath the earth, the flow of array boundaries around Cloud-Resting City, and even the internal meridian structures of the guards on the city walls three miles away!

With a single glance toward the Lin Clan estate, Adam saw the clogged meridians of the elders, the weak points in their family defense array, and the violent, unstable red Qi exploding inside Lin Feng’s body at that very second!

Adam lowered his gaze, his smile turning cruel.

"They’re forcing the breakthrough tonight," he said softly, his voice fading into the night wind as he started down the hill toward the city gates. "Perfect. I’ll be there to offer my congratulations."
