The turquoise waters of Aethel did not merely part; they exploded.

A thirty-foot geyser of white foam, pressurized sea spray, and raw aquatic fury shot into the sunlit air.

From the center of the roaring deluge, Eagre erupted like an angry leviathan summoned from the underworld.Full novel: Sing Me Ashore — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

His shimmering tail lashed the surf, propelling his massive torso ten feet above the waterline, his luminous fins fully flared and glowing with blinding, divine anger.

Glinting in the harsh midday sun, held high above his head in two webbed, claw-tipped hands like an ancient siege weapon, was the collosal, rock-hard, fifty-pound pink pearl.

“TAKE YOUR CONSUMMATE TRIBUTE, YOU INSUFFERABLE LAND-WEASEL!

” Eagre roared in a voice that shook the very coral beneath the island.

With a fierce, full-body twist that leveraged every ounce of his sea-god strength, Eagre hurled the heavy, glowing pink orb directly at Saira’s head.

The pearl cut through the air with an ominous, low-pitched whir-whir-whir sound, leaving a visible trail of sea mist in its wake.

It was a flawless, lethal trajectory-a high-density, luxury artillery shell designed to silence her delusional human mouth forever.

Saira, standing gracefully at the tide line with her hands folded over her heart, didn’t panic.

She didn’t scream.

Instead, seeing the glowing pink sphere hurtling toward her, her eyes lit up with sheer, unadulterated delight.

“Oh, a toss-and-catch courtship ritual!

How delightfully athletic!” Saira squeaked happily.

Without a single second of hesitation, she took a dramatic, theatrical step to the left, curtised deeply to “receive” the gift, and completely stepped out of the projectile’s path.

The fifty-pound pearl sailed right past her shoulder, missing her by less than two inches, and continued its unstoppable, momentum-fueled journey up the beach.

Saira’s eyes followed the pearl’s arc in slow motion.

The pearl flew over the yellowing palm-frond carpet.

It zipped past the two “engagement coconuts” sitting on the flat rock.

And then, with a horrifying, thunderous CRACK-CRUNCH, it slammed square into the central nuptial pavilion.

The impact was instaneous and absolute.

The dry, weakened driftwood pile snapped into a dozen flying splinters.

The heavy roof-weighed down by several hundred pounds of wet, drying purple sea-tangle, wilting hibiscus flowers, and dense palmetto leaves-buckled instantly.

The entire structure collapsed inward like a dying accordion, folding in on itself with a pathetic, dusty WHOOSH that blew a cloud of dried sand and debris across the entire beach.

The giant pink pearl bounced once off the wreckage, rolled out of the debris pile, and settled calmly on the sand right in front of Saira’s boots, glowing softly in the afternoon sun.

Silence descended upon the island, broken only by the sound of falling palm needles and the gentle lapping of the waves.

Out in the surf, Eagre dropped back into the water with a loud splash, panting heavily, a triumphant, razor-sharp smirk spreading across his silver-scaled face.

He wiped a streak of sea foam from his chin and crossed his broad arms, waiting for her to crawl out from under the shock of his divine wrath.

“That,” Eagre declared in a loud, echoing voice, “will teach you not to speak to an ancient entity of the deep about ‘spooning’ and ‘pink pearls’!

Consider your pathetic stick-dwelling demolished,human!

Your hubris has brought about your-” “Eager!” Saira gasped, her voice trembling.

She wasn’t looking at her destroyed shelter.

She was staring down at the massive, radiant pink pearl resting at her feet, her hands clasped against her cheeks, her sapphire eyes sparkling with misty, overwhelmed emotion.

Eagre’s smirk faltered slightly.

His ear-fins twitched.

“…what?” “You…you brought it,” Saira whispered, dropping to her knees on the sand and wrapping her arms around the heavy, glowing orb.

She rested her cheek against its cool, smooth surface, completely ignoring the fact that it weighed as much as an iron anvil.

“You actually brought the big pink pearl.

And…and you threw it to me with such raw, unbridled passion!” Eagre’s emerald glowing eyes widened in sheer, horror-stricken disbelief.

“I didn’t throw it to you!” He shrieked, his voice cracking into a high-pitched siren squeak.

“I threw it AT you!

It was a projectile!

A missile!

I was trying to knock you unconscious!” “Oh, stop it, you silly sardine!” Saira laughed delightfully, waving a dismissive, dusty-covered hand at him while struggling to lift the fifty-pound pearl onto her lap.

“You don’t have to pretend!

I know a dramatic, high-society grand gesture when I see one!

Destroying my old villa to make room for our future estate?

It’s poetic!

It’s symbolic!

You’re telling me that our old lives are over, and we are building a new life together!” “I AM TRYING TO DESTROY YOUR LIFE, NOT BUILD ONE WITH YOU!” Eagre bellowed, slamming both palms onto the water’s surface and sending a wall of spray cascading over the rocks.

From the top of a surviving rock near the wreckage, a small, dusty shape emerged from a pile of collapsed palm fronds.

Crabby shook a layer of gray ash and pulverized wood off his coconut-shell helmet.

The little crustacean scuttled over the ruins of the nuptial pavilion, inspected the snapped main beam, and then slowly marched down toward the glowing pink pearl.

He climbed up onto the side of the massive pink orb, tapped it twice with his right pincer to test its density, and gave a single, slow nod of approval.

“See?” Saira pointed proudly at the crab resting on her giant pearl.

“Even Crabby, my Head Architect and Director of Romantic Ambiance, agrees!

This pearl is the ultimate symbol of your unyielding devotion!

It’s practically an engagement ring!” Eagre grabbed the sides of his head with both webbed hands, letting out a long, soundless scream toward the cloudless blue sky.

“It is fifty pounds of solid calcium carbonate!” Eagre howled, his gills pumping violently as his face flushed a dark, furious purple under his scales.

“I retrieved it from a giant clam in the deepest trenche of the Pearl Shelves specifically to crush your skull!

Why won’t you get crushed?!” “Because love conquers all, my dear fish-boy,” Saira purred, leaning her chin on top of the giant pink pearl and winking at him through her frizzy, sand-dusted bang of hair.

“Now, come back up on the beach.

We need to plan where we’re putting our palace.

And this time, you’re helping clear the debris.” Eagre stared at her for three agonizing seconds.

He looked at her smug, radiant face, he looked at the glowing pink pearl, and he looked at the crab sitting on top of it like a tiny, triumphant king.

Without uttering another word, the ancient sea-god threw his hands in the air, let out a gurgling sound of absolute existential defeat, and dove headfirst into the ocean, vanishing beneath the blue waves with a bitter, dramatic splash.

Saira smiled sweetly, patting the giant pink pearl on her lap.

“He’s just going to fetch more building materials, Crabby.

Such a provider.” Crabby clicked his pincers once and went right back to chewing his kelp.
