The Tropical midday sun beat down mercilessly upon the glittering sands of Aethel, casting a harsh glare across the shoreline.
Yet, the brutal heat did absolutely nothing to slow down the relentless, high-energy spectacle occuring on the beach.
Saira was still dancing.
In fact, she had entered what could only be described as a second wind of pure, unadulterated high-society performance art.
Her handmade palm-frond grass skirt swished with a furious, rhythmic shhh-shhh-shhh as she executed a series of increasingly elaborate, entirely invented hula moves across the dunes.
Her hibiscus flower crown sat cocked at a confident angle over her wild, static-charged curls, and her dark aviator sunglasses reflected the turquoise horizon with cool, unflappable swagger.
She dipped low to the left, kicked up a small cloud of sparkling yellow sand, and spun gracefully into a sweeping posture that sent bright red hibiscus petals fluttering off her lei and into the breeze.
A few feet away, Crabby remained seated behind his flat-stone card table.
His miniature aviators gleamed in the sunlight, his tiny palm-frond cigar sticking out of his mouth at a cool forty-five-degree angle.
He maintained a steady, hypnotic, machine-gun tempo on his hollowed-out coconut shells-clack-clack-clack, clack-clack-clack- his pincers blurring into rhythmic frenzy.
“Look at the footwork, Crabby!” Saira called out over the sound of the crashing waves, performing a sharp double-hip shimmy before sweeping her arms upward into the shape of a dramatic crescent moon.
“The ‘Siren-summoning shuffle’!
I just invented it!
It combines high-fashion runaway energy with ancient island folk traditions!” A loud, thunderous explosion of sea spray shattered the rhythmic tranquility of the beach.
Eagre erupted from the surf like a deeply miserable sea monster, his tail thrashing the shallow water into a chaotic, foaming froth.
Every muscle across his massive torso strained as he dragged the second one-ton granite boulder up from the seabed.
The sheer weight of the ancient rock left a deep, carved trench in the wet sand behind him.
Sweat and brine poured off his scaly skin, and his luminous ear-fins flared with wild, violet-tinted frustration, venting little puffs of steam into the humid air.
He slammed the massive granite monolith down right beside the first one with a bone-rattling CRASH-THUD that shook the palm trees and sent a flock of resting sea-gulls screaming into the sky.
“Two!” Eagre roared, his voice trembling with a mix of physical exhaustion and profound existential rage.
He wiped a streak of sea foam from his face with a webbed hand and slammed his fists onto his hips, glaring through his dark plastic sunglasses at the sand dune.
“That is TWO granite boulders, human!
ONE MORE, and our forced contractual interaction is terminated forever!” Saira didn’t stop dancing.
She simply incorporated a sweeping side-step into her routine, sliding down the slope of the dune toward him, her grass skirt rustling rhythmically.
“Magnificent form, my dear sardine!” Saira praised, striking a sudden, dramatic pose right in front of his towering, scaly form.
She held up her hands, framing him with her fingers like an art critic inspecting a rare sculpture.
“The sheer density of those rocks is really going to bring our new palace together.
But listen, since you’re taking a brief operational intermission…I have a quick customer service request.” Eagre froze.
His pupils shrank microscopic pinpricks behind his dark lenses.
His gills flared so hard they made a sharp, warning snap sound.
“A…a what?” Eagre growled, his voice dropping into a dangerous, low-pitched underwater rumble.
“A request?
From ME?” “Yes!” Saira beamed, adjusting her flower crown with a flick of her wrist.
She folded her hands over her heart, looking up at him with bright, expectant eyes.
“Since you are an ancient, majestic sea-god-and, more importantly, a siren-can I request a song for my dance routine?
Something with a bit of high-stakes, dramatic flair!
Maybe a musical theatre ballad?
Or an ancient oceanic battle hymn with a catchy chorus?” Silence descended upon the beach, save for Crabby, who slowly paused his coconut-shell drumming to take a long, silent drag from his unlit leaf-cigar.
Eagre stared at her.
He stared at her frizzy hair, her oversized blazer, her swaying palm-frond skirt, and her dark sunglasses.
His silver-scaled jaw worked silently for three full seconds before his mind finally processed the sheer, unprecedented absurdity of her question.
“A song ?” Eager shrieked, his voice cracking into a high-pitched, echoing siren squeak that vibrated the very air around them.
“You are asking a creature of the deep abyssal trenches…to provide BACKGROUND MUSIC for your delusional, leaf-shaking dance routine?!” “Well, yes!” Saira nodded her head vigorously, taking a small elegant hula step to the left.
“A live vocal performance elevates any high-society event.
Besides, sirens are famous for their irresistible, enchanting voices!
It’s practically in your job description.
Think of it as providing a romantic soundtrack for your future bride while she honours your manual labor!” Eagre grabbed his head with both his claw-tipped hands, letting out a soundless, horrified scream toward the cloudless sky.
His gills pumped wild, violet-tinted mist into the air as his face flushed a dark, furious shade of purple under his scales.
“I use my voice to lure entire imperial armadas onto jagged reefs to drown in the dark!” Eagre bellowed, stomping his tail onto the sand so hard it left an imprint three inches deep.
“I do not perform BALLADS!
I do not do REQUESTS!
I am a terror of the seven seas, not a tavern bard for a shipwrecked lunatic!” “So…no musical theatre?” Saira asked innocently, tilting her head.
“I AM GETTING THE THIRD BOULDER!” Eagre screamed at the top of his lungs, throwing his webbed hands into the air in absolute, complete defeat.
He spun on his tail, launched himself off the sand, and executed a desperate, furious dive back into the turquoise waves, vanishing beneath the foam with a massive splash that soaked Saira’s grass skirt completely.
Saira wiped a few drops of saltwater off her dark aviator sunglasses, turning toward the stone table with satisfied, triumphant smile.
“He’s warm-up vocalizing underwater, crabby,” Saira purred confidently.
“He just needs to clear his throat before the grand finale.” Crabby clicked his pincers once, adjusted his tiny sunglasses, and went right back to tapping his coconut shells.
