Because of He Yuan’s last-minute meeting, the two of them arrived at the company at eight o’clock.
He Yuan tapped lightly on Lin Yue’s desk. “Prepare for the meeting in half an hour. Since it was decided suddenly, it’s a bit rushed, but try not to make mistakes with the materials and data I asked you to organize earlier.”
“Okay, President He.”
Besides Wei Jia, He Yuan also had three vice presidents under him, all of whom he had personally promoted. If he wanted to push transformation, he couldn’t do it without their support.
At around nine o’clock, everyone attending the meeting had gathered at the conference room door.
When Lin Yue followed He Yuan to the entrance, they happened to run into Vice President Zheng Yu and his assistant, Qing Jing.
Qing Jing’s gaze first fell on He Yuan, then shifted to Lin Yue, her eyes carrying a hint of mockery and provocation.
Lin Yue couldn’t be bothered with her and directly pushed open the meeting room door for He Yuan.
“What’s going on?” Zheng Yu said. “Assistant Zhou isn’t here yet? President He, you’re really spoiling him.”
Lin Yue pulled out a chair for He Yuan, and he sat down smoothly. Leaning back slightly, he tapped his fingers on the table twice, then looked at Zheng Yu in silence. “I haven’t even settled accounts with you for the mess you left the company because of your issues with your girlfriend.”
Zheng Yu rubbed his nose. “Alright, alright, not that again.”
He Yuan slightly curled his lips—he only brought it up because it was useful.
Without saying a word, He Yuan turned his head slightly, and Lin Yue immediately distributed the materials in her hands.
While handing them out, she suddenly realized that the work USB drive was missing. She had clipped it inside the documents, and because of the short time, she hadn’t made a backup. Did it fall near the door?
After going around the table and returning to He Yuan’s side, she glanced toward the door, but there was nothing.
Lin Yue clenched her hands tightly, feeling anxious. No matter how capable she was, she couldn’t possibly memorize all the data on the USB drive in such a short time.
He Yuan glanced at her and suddenly said, “Secretary Lin, I left a document on my desk. Go get it, and also check on Assistant Zhou.”
“Okay.”
Lin Yue got up and walked out. There was indeed a document on He Yuan’s desk. Just as she picked it up and was about to call Zhou Yunce, she saw him coming out of the office, looking sleepy.
“Assistant Zhou? You didn’t go home last night?”
Zhou Yunce gave a soft “mm.” “We’ve been busy with the Nancheng development project. I worked overtime last night. I only slept for two hours before being dragged up again.”
Lin Yue: “…”
Every family has its own difficulties, and everyone has struggles they can’t talk about.
Zhou Yunce said, “Let’s go. Time for the meeting.”
Lin Yue opened the meeting room door for him. The next second, Zhou Yunce dropped his tired expression and said seriously, “Sorry for being late.”
Zheng Yu snorted. He had never seen an assistant arrive later than the boss.
Zhou Yunce didn’t bother responding. After all, He Yuan had left work early, leaving him alone to deal with the project all night.
“Since everyone’s here, let’s begin,” He Yuan said, pointing to a nearby chair, signaling Lin Yue to sit.
Seeing how confident He Yuan looked, Lin Yue had no choice but to sit down, thinking to herself: Whatever comes, I’ll handle it.
She might not be able to recite every piece of data, but she knew most of it.
However, throughout the entire meeting, her USB drive was never used. He Yuan controlled the whole discussion, and only then did Lin Yue realize that he might never have intended to use the data she prepared.
She felt confused. If it wasn’t needed, why make her prepare it?
Even after the meeting ended, she still couldn’t figure it out.
Not wanting to dwell on it, she went straight to He Yuan’s desk and used an apology to bring up the topic.
“President He, I’m sorry. I made a mistake during the meeting this morning—I lost the USB drive.”
He Yuan stopped signing documents and looked up slightly. “I know.”
“You know?”
He Yuan nodded. “Secretary Lin, don’t let it happen again.”
“May I ask a question?”
“Go ahead.”
“Did you never plan to use the data I prepared from the beginning?”
He Yuan nodded honestly. “That’s right. Secretary Lin, this was just training. Those people in the meeting already know the data very well. In the workplace, you always need to stay alert. In a situation like today, someone in my position cannot allow a meeting to depend entirely on an assistant or secretary. Do you understand?”
“I understand,” Lin Yue said. “You were helping me improve by assigning this task, but I still made a mistake.”
He Yuan smiled lightly. “Everyone makes mistakes, especially when they’re new to work. Compared to Assistant Zhou, you’re already much better than he was at the beginning. If you don’t believe me, you can ask him.”
Lin Yue said, “I promise I won’t make this kind of low-level mistake again.”
He Yuan nodded. “Go back to work.”
Lin Yue let out a long breath. In her heart, she wondered what kind of luck she had to meet such a good boss.
He taught her patiently, didn’t scold her for mistakes, and instead gave encouragement and room for improvement.
…
After work that evening, Lin Yue met Qin Yan at a hot pot restaurant. Her mouth was practically watering. How long had it been since she last ate hot pot to maintain her figure? Tonight, she decided to reward herself a little.
“We haven’t eaten out together in a long time,” Qin Yan said.
Lin Yue nodded. “You’ve been busy during summer classes, and I’ve been even busier—basically on call 24/7. But President He has been getting off work early these past couple of days, so I finally have time to have hot pot with you.”
Qin Yan said, “Your boss’s surname is He?”
Lin Yue replied, “Yeah. Why?”
“I also have a student with the surname He—his name is He Lin. He’s quite mischievous but has good grades. He just doesn’t like doing homework. He’s actually a good kid. Remember that time you forgot your keys? He got into a fight and had to call his guardian.”
Lin Yue choked on a chili pepper and started coughing. She quickly drank the cold water Qin Yan handed her.
If she remembered correctly, He Yuan’s profile mentioned a younger brother named He Lin.
Lin Yue quickly asked, “Call the guardian? Who went?”
“His older brother. I think he runs a company—his family is pretty rich. The key point is, he’s really handsome. He even added me on WeChat, but I know my place.” Qin Yan suddenly looked at Lin Yue. “Hey, how about I introduce him to you?”
Lin Yue coughed violently again before finally calming down. Wiping the tears from her eyes caused by the chili, she said, “I suspect your student’s brother is my boss.”
Qin Yan was stunned. “No way, that can’t be such a coincidence.”
She unlocked her phone and showed Lin Yue. When Lin Yue saw the familiar WeChat profile, her vision went dark.
After she became a full employee, she had added He Yuan on WeChat. His profile picture was a golden retriever lying on the grass.
“Qin Yan,” Lin Yue said, her face full of despair, “do you think he might have seen the post you made last night?”
Qin Yan looked at her and nodded honestly. “Uh… I can only say it’s possible.”
Lin Yue: “…”
So embarrassing!
