Yu Yan looked up and saw He Fan.
He Fan was wearing a tailored suit, his hair combed meticulously, but his tie was loosely pulled open, and his eyes betrayed an irrepressible restlessness.
“Yanyan.” He reached out to pull her, but Yu Yan sidestepped to avoid him.
“Something wrong?” Yu Yan’s tone was flat as she glanced at the black Bentley parked by the roadside and the driver standing beside it—the car and driver He Chiyan had left for her.
“You got married?” He Fan’s voice was taut as he stared into Yu Yan’s eyes, trying to find any trace of a joke or a sulk, but there was none—not a single hint.
He Fan’s anger flared: “When Wanqing told me, I didn’t believe it. Yanyan, do you even know what you’re doing?”
“I do.” Yu Yan found it somewhat ridiculous. “It’s just a marriage. Why is Young Master He making such a fuss?”
“What do you mean ‘just a marriage’?” He Fan raised his voice, drawing glances from passersby.
Yu Yan frowned in annoyance.
He Fan took a deep breath and lowered his voice. “Yanyan, come with me. Let’s talk.”
“No need.” Yu Yan didn’t want to linger. She walked around him toward the car.
He Fan grabbed her wrist firmly. “Yu Yan!”
Yu Yan winced in pain and said sharply, “Let go.”
“Tell me, who is that man?” He Fan didn’t release his grip, his eyes churning with complex emotions. “What’s his family background? Do you even know him? It’s only been a few days since we broke up, and you’re just casually marrying someone?”
Yu Yan tried to pull her hand back, but his grip was too tight.
“He Fan, didn’t you also get engaged just a few days after we broke up? Whether I marry or not, and who I marry, has nothing to do with you.”
The marriage agreement explicitly stated that for the first two years of the marriage, the other party’s identity should not be widely disclosed to the public.
Yu Yan didn’t know if He Chiyan also wanted to keep it from He Fan, so she brushed it off.
“How is it none of my business?”
He Fan steadied himself and continued, “Yanyan, I’m the one who let you down. But you don’t need to hurt yourself to get back at me. You’re only twenty-five. You have your whole life ahead of you. Why marry some random man just to spite me?”
The more he spoke, the more convinced he became. “Listen to me—divorce him. Even if we can’t be lovers anymore, I can’t watch you jump into a fire pit.”
Hearing this, Yu Yan found He Fan’s reasoning almost unbelievable. “He Fan, do you think I can’t live without you, and that I only got married to get back at you?”
“Isn’t that the case?” He Fan was frantic, his voice loud.
Yu Yan had never seen He Fan like this—hysterical, utterly lacking in composure.
She tried to tell him calmly, “I didn’t marry to get back at you. You’re not that important. My husband and I are doing just fine, so don’t trouble yourself. Also, let go. I’m going home.”
He Fan didn’t let go. Instead, he stepped closer, his eyes full of hurt.
His voice was hoarse as he said, “Yanyan, how about this—divorce him, and I’ll keep taking care of you. I’ll explain things to Wanqing. We can go back to how we were…”
Yu Yan looked at this man who had once occupied her entire youth and suddenly felt he was utterly unfamiliar.
She could barely contain her anger as she demanded, “Go back to how we were? You’re about to marry Su Wanqing. You want me to be with you like before? That’s called cheating—that’s being a mistress!”
He Fan’s face went pale, and he quickly explained, “Yanyan, that’s not what I meant…”
“Then what did you mean?” Yu Yan’s face turned completely cold. “Divorce him, and then what? You keep me on the side, hidden forever, and when you get tired of me one day, you toss me a breakup fee and send me off?”
The veins on He Fan’s temples pulsed. “Yanyan, you know that’s not what I meant.”
Yu Yan nodded. Her wrist ached from his grip, and tears welled in her eyes.
Six years of feelings, ended abruptly. Her heart wasn’t made of iron—she hurt too. Now that she had started a new life, why was He Fan stirring things up again?
Her voice trembled slightly. “He Fan, you were the one who said we should part on good terms. If you’re still a man, don’t come bothering me again.”
Just as Yu Yan finished speaking, a sweet female voice suddenly rang out.
“Afan!”
He Fan looked up and saw Su Wanqing running toward him with her handbag. He quickly released Yu Yan’s wrist.
Yu Yan let out a mocking laugh and walked straight toward the black Bentley by the roadside.
“Afan, did you come all the way to pick me up from work?” Su Wanqing deliberately ignored the earlier tug-of-war between He Fan and Yu Yan, speaking coquettishly.
“Yeah.” He Fan smiled at her and took her bag. “First day at work—how did it go?”
“Pretty good! My colleagues are all very nice to me.” Su Wanqing leaned into him. “Especially Sister Yu Yan. She gave me a lot of tasks so I could integrate into the company as quickly as possible.”
He Fan frowned slightly. “You just joined the company. Can you handle that many tasks?”
Su Wanqing smiled sweetly. “It’s fine, Afan. I can handle those tasks. Don’t blame Sister Yu Yan.”
The two walked together toward the Porsche parked nearby. He Fan gallantly opened the car door for Su Wanqing and helped her inside.
This scene happened to fall into the eyes of two people peeking from across the street.
They were none other than Yu Yan’s parents, Yu Jianguo and Zhang Guilin.
They hadn’t managed to catch her at the entrance of Yu Yan’s apartment building yesterday. After much effort, they’d learned that Yu Yan worked at Lingyu Design, and after several detours, they finally found the Hengya Building, hoping to corner Yu Yan there.
Unexpectedly, instead of Yu Yan, they spotted Yu Yan’s wealthy young boyfriend.
“Old man, look—is that guy the Young Master of the He family?” Zhang Guilin squinted, staring at He Fan’s profile, then lowered her head to compare with a photo she’d pulled up on her phone.
Yu Jianguo leaned in to look, compared the two, and his voice trembled with barely contained excitement: “It’s him, the Young Master of the He family!”
“But that woman isn’t Yu Yan, is she?” Zhang Guilin looked at Su Wanqing getting into the car, puzzled.
Yu Jianguo waved it off dismissively. “With someone of Young Master He’s status, isn’t it normal for him to have a few other women on the side? As long as Yu Yan is still his official girlfriend, he won’t ignore us. Come on, come on, let’s hurry over.”
The two didn’t give it much more thought. Taking advantage of the fact that He Fan hadn’t yet closed the car door, they jogged across the street.
“Son-in-law!” Yu Jianguo ran up, panting heavily, and blocked the car door.
