14 – I Want to Go to School
After Jin Zhiren left, Fu Chenxuan led the person to the table and sat down. “Eat first, then we’ll open the gifts later.”
Chu Ruan looked up and fixed her gaze steadily on him. Fu Chenxuan served her soup, his eyes not settling on the girl.
He knew Chu Ruan had something to say to him.
But he didn’t want to hear those words.
Chu Ruan tugged at the man’s arm and said slowly, “I want… to go to school.”
Fu Chenxuan’s movements paused briefly before he lowered his gaze, set down the bowl, and proceeded to serve Chu Ruan more food—still avoiding looking at her.
Though he didn’t want to speculate too much, he couldn’t help but suspect that Chu Ruan’s recent drastic change in demeanor was all for the purpose of leaving him.
Everything was just to get away from him.
As expected, it was all his wishful thinking. How could it be possible? How could someone completely transform into another person in such a short time?
Fu Chenxuan inwardly scoffed, though his expression remained neutral as he curved his lips slightly. “Eat first.”
When Chu Ruan saw the man’s smile, she knew it wasn’t genuine—he just didn’t want to frighten her again.
She knew the man was suspicious of her.
Not only was Fu Chenxuan suspicious of her, but his mind also flashed with numerous methods to keep her confined forever.
He could give her everything except leaving—as long as she stayed.
But what Chu Ruan wanted now was to go out, strengthen herself, and then personally seek revenge.
This was what Fu Chenxuan could least tolerate.
The man’s jaw tightened, revealing a cold and stern demeanor. Chu Ruan bit her lip, leaned against Fu Chenxuan’s shoulder, and coaxed him softly.
“Chu… Chu Lanyan… she goes to school. I… I want to go too. I want… to become stronger.” Chu Ruan spoke with determination.
Fu Chenxuan’s voice was icy and unyielding. “By my side, no one can harm you.”
“But they can harm you!” Chu Ruan finally couldn’t hold back, her voice rising as her eyes reddened and her fists clenched tightly.
Fu Chenxuan looked at the suddenly furious Chu Ruan in surprise, momentarily caught off guard.
After her outburst, Chu Ruan’s heart jolted in alarm. She lowered her head and gritted her teeth. “I… I must go.”
“Only when I… become stronger… can I protect you.”
Fu Chenxuan grew even more astonished. “Protect me?”
Chu Ruan clutched the hem of her dress, her fists clenched so tightly that the veins on the back of her hands bulged, making Fu Chenxuan’s heart ache at the sight.
“You… don’t worry. Even if… you drive me away, I won’t… I won’t leave you!” Chu Ruan declared resolutely.
Fu Chenxuan abruptly raised his hand and gripped Chu Ruan’s chin, lifting her delicate face to see the glistening tears in her eyes.
The cool-toned light from the ceiling cast down, illuminating the man’s sculpted features. His deep eyes churned like a stormy sea.
And at the center of the storm was Chu Ruan.
“What did you say?” Fu Chenxuan asked, enunciating each word slowly.
“I… will never… leave you again.” Chu Ruan stared at the man, raising her hand to grip his wrist firmly.
Fu Chenxuan suddenly released her chin and pulled her tightly into his embrace. Closing his eyes, he murmured in a low, hoarse voice, “Can you hear it?”
Chu Ruan was pressed against his chest. “Hear what?”
“My heartbeat. Only you… can make it beat this fast.” The man’s voice carried a hint of delight as he chuckled softly.
His words made Chu Ruan blush, her ears burning.
In the end, Fu Chenxuan agreed.
But with conditions: no boarding at school, returning home on time every day, and calling him at noon.Chu Ruan obediently nodded, then threw herself into the man’s arms, snuggling close and nuzzling him affectionately.
Fu Chenxuan wrapped his arms around the girl in return, his gaze deepening as a shadow flickered through his eyes.
