"The only way to win at roulette is to steal the chips while the croupier is distracted." - old gambler’s saying

The sky split open like a rotten fruit.

Joel stood in the middle of a burning street and watched it happen. A black tear ripped across the heavens, wider than a city, and something came through.Full novel: SSS- Rank: I awakened a 100,000 Roulette Return System — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

A tower.

It was so tall that it had no top. It dropped out of the tear like a spear of black glass, and everywhere its shadow touched, buildings folded in on themselves and people turned to grey statues of ash.

Screaming. Fire raining sideways. The ground splitting like an egg.

He ran with the crowd. It didn’t matter where. The sky was coming down.

Then the shadow slid over him, cold as a grave, and swallowed everything.

Joel woke with a violent gasp.

Cold sweat glued his shirt to his back. His heart pounded like it was trying to punch through his ribs and escape.

He stared up. A crystal chandelier hung above him, glittering faintly.

’That’s not my ceiling.’

Before he could process that thought, a flood of foreign memories slammed into his skull.

Joel grabbed his head with both hands and curled up, teeth clenched. The images poured in, sharp and merciless.

A walled city called Caelmont, all rust-colored rooftops and shrine bells. A boy named Joel Carrow, seventeen years old, the famous orphan of two war heroes. A crowd of classmates. A sharp-eyed best friend named Vance. A beautiful girlfriend named Chloe.

And everywhere, everywhere, the Zenith Spire. A black needle on the horizon taller than the clouds, its base wrapped in storm, its summit in things people were not allowed to talk about.

Joel lay still, breathing hard, two lives settling side by side in one head.

Joel had been a pharmacy tech on Earth. He was Twenty-six, he did last night shifts, energy drinks, and Joel loves reading webnovels.

The last thing he remembered was finishing a Chapter about a guy who awakened a cheat system, Then Joel had felt a tight band of pain across his chest, and then nothing at all.

Now he was here.

’Okay,’ he thought flatly. ’Okay. I can work with this.’

He forced his breathing to slow and ran a quick checklist, the way he used to sort pills on a night shift. Sight, fine. Hearing, fine. Memory, two sets, merged. Body, young, healthy, strong heartbeat.

Then he noticed it.

His fingertips were numb. Not asleep-numb. A deep, spreading numbness, like his hands had been packed in wet sand. And his mouth tasted like he’d been sucking on a coin.

The pharmacy tech in him went very quiet.

He knew those two symptoms together. He’d read about them in a toxicology Chapter at 2am in the morning. Peripheral numbness and Metallic taste.

Heavy metal poisoning.

Interesting.

He checked the merged memories again, this time looking for it. The old Joel had felt off for weeks with tiredness and stomach aches.

The academy medic called it stress. The private doctor called it pre-awakening nerves. Nobody ran a blood panel.

Nobody ever runs a blood panel on a healthy seventeen-year-old golden boy.

And the ceremony is tomorrow.

Something shifted beside him under the blankets.

Joel turned his head.

Chloe Bellamy was already awake, propped up on one elbow, watching him with wide green eyes.

Her honey-blonde hair spilled over the pillow in a loose braid. Even at dawn, with sleep still on her face, she looked like a magazine cover that had wandered into the wrong bedroom.

She was the daughter of the Bellamy trading house, mid-tier money with top-tier ambition. Projected to be B-rank.

Sharp jawline, full lips, high cheekbones, a small beauty mark under her left eye. Slim shoulders, an athlete’s easy posture.

Chloe had chased the orphan of Caelmont’s greatest heroes for two years, and she had caught him.

She reached over and brushed his damp hair off his forehead. "You were screaming in your sleep again."

"Again?" Joel’s voice came out steady.

"Third time this week." Her fingers lingered on his temple. "It’s nerves. Everyone gets the shakes before the Genesis Tear. Even you."

"Joel." She sat up, and excitement bloomed across her face. "It’s tomorrow. Do you get that? Tomorrow. The whole city at the Central Plaza, the Tear coming out of the vault, Mayor Sterling on the balcony."

She caught his hand and squeezed. Her palms were soft and warm.

"Your parents were S-rank," she whispered, like it was scripture. "Everyone knows what that means for you. S-rank at seventeen. The Mayor is already talking about the celebration ball."

Her eyes were shining.

Joel smiled back at her.

’Your pupils are normal. Your heartbeat feels calm. You held my numb hand just now and didn’t once glance down at it.’

’You already knew it was numb.’

"Chloe," he said, keeping the smile in place. "Get me my tonic. My throat’s raw."

Her expression flickered. One frame. Maybe half a frame.

Then she laughed, leaned over him, and reached for the nightstand.

The tonic was a daily ritual. A murky green bottle, hand-blown, with the private clinic’s wax seal. The old Joel had drunk one every night for his nerves.

She poured a measure into a glass and pressed it into his hand. "All of it. You need the sleep."

She watched him lift it.

Joel raised the glass in a lazy toast. "To tomorrow."

Chloe laughed and clinked her juice against it. Then she turned away, already typing on her phone.

Joel tipped the glass and poured half the tonic into the potted fern by the window. One smooth motion, perfected over years of hiding energy drinks behind a pharmacy counter.

He set the empty glass down with a satisfied sigh.

"All of it," Chloe said, without looking up. "Doctor’s orders."

’Mm.’

The Rift Fall happened a hundred years ago.

One night, without warning, the sky tore open and the world that existed before it stopped existing. Old Earth burned, drowned, and shattered. And out of the tear descended the Zenith Spire, a tower of impossible size, its interior layered into strata full of monsters, materials, and riches.

Humanity did not die. Humanity adapted.

Survivors gathered in the Spire’s shadow and raised walled Mega-Cities from its cast-off resources. The tower became the new frontier. Every floor up meant stronger monsters and richer veins, and the cities that fed on the Spire grew fat and proud.

Caelmont was one of the outer cities. Small, proud, and hungry.

Once a year, Caelmont brought its seventeen-year-olds to the Central Plaza, to the Genesis Tear, a massive crystal left behind by the First Ascendants to drink energy straight out of the Spire itself.

One touch. That was all it took. The Tear would read a child’s soul and hand back a Class.

F-rank meant hauling crates for the rest of your life. C-rank meant a guard’s paycheck. A-rank meant the academies fighting over you.

S-rank meant statues.

Tomorrow was Joel’s turn at the crystal. The whole city was watching. The Mayor had bet his career on the golden orphan.

His girlfriend had bet two years of her life. His best friend had bet, presumably, his loyalty.

’And somebody,’ Joel thought, lying in the dark of his huge, beautiful, borrowed room, ’has been feeding me poison for weeks.’

He ran the math. Slow, low-dose heavy metal. Not enough to kill. Just enough to fry the nerves. A poisoned body at the Tear would read as trash. A ruined affinity. A failed golden boy.

Who profits?

Vance gets his spotlight. Chloe gets to trade up. The Mayor loses a risky bet and survives the politics.

’Convenient.’

Nothing proven. Nothing even close.

’Then tomorrow, I’ll watch. I’ll smile. I’ll let every one of you show me exactly who you are.’

He turned his head toward the window. The Spire cut the night sky like a black needle, patient and endless.

On Earth, he had spent ten thousand hours reading stories about men who were handed garbage cards and turned them into kingdoms.

’I died in a folding chair with chest pain. Not this time.’

Joel Carrow closed his eyes and slept like a man the night before a very big payout.
