"When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth." — Arthur Conan Doyle

Three seconds was an eternity for a gambler with a plan and a heartbeat for a gambler without one, and Joel spent the first of his three seconds doing nothing but standing still and letting the form load.

The Meteor Piercer had always been a mortgage, and he had simply never read the fine print until now.Full novel: SSS- Rank: I awakened a 100,000 Roulette Return System — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

The technique did not ask his body for strength, because it asked for time, four sequential footsteps of rotation through the hips and spine, each one compounding momentum into the next like a debt rolling over at ruinous interest, and on the final release the accumulated total arrived at the spearhead all at once.

’You cannot split the payment,’ Joel thought, watching the four arms rise, ’so you stop paying in installments and pay the whole thing in one lump sum, and you bill the difference to a leg.’

The discharge didn’t need to kill the Chieftain through its hide.

It only needed to reach the heart before the demolition landed.

The heart was four meters up, buried behind scar tissue and fury. Between Joel and it stood one damaged spear, one final release, and a pharmacist willing to spend the two legs carrying him.

He planted the first footstep of the form.

The second rotation came through his hips.

The arena seemed to tilt around him as his whole body committed to a single line of force.

The pain in his ribs stopped feeling like something he needed to think about. It became nothing more than background noise.

The third step loaded the spiral from the ground through his spine, and his muscles began to tear in advance, actual structural failures starting in the right leg as the form gathered more force than his factory tolerances had ever agreed to carry, and the regeneration behind his heart stopped repairing the tears and began merely containing them, which was the difference between healing and holding.

[Ding!]

[Charging: ’Quake Slam’ release in 1 second.]

[Meteor Piercer: 74% loaded.]

The fourth footstep never touched the ground.

Joel jumped into the release instead, using the final rotation to carry him through the air.

The spear came forward with everything he had.

The two techniques met in the center of the arena, and the world made a sound that had no business existing inside a walled city’s hunting floor.

The Meteor Piercer came forward in one straight line, carrying all the force Joel had built up.

It struck the descending wall of the Quake Slam at the exact point where the right pillar’s grip ended and the Chieftain’s heart began.

For one frozen instant, neither side moved.

A spear of force pushed against a falling demolition. Four meters of scarred flesh stood between the Chieftain’s heart and a boy with 11.4 Strength and a weapon at 1/80.

Then the discharge went through.

The spearhead found the seam beneath the crown ridge on the way up.

11,200 units of kinetic force followed it through the hide, ribs, and ancient scar tissue.

Then the Rare-tier property of the technique took effect.

A meteor didn’t care about armor. Part of the Chieftain’s defense simply stopped mattering.

The spear drove through.

The Chieftain’s heart took the full force of the strike.

The Quake Slam also landed.

The four arms completed their fall, because the landlord died upright and its muscles finished the order its brain had already stopped countersigning, and both pillars came down through Joel’s lower body as the spear went through its heart, and the two events occurred within the same quarter second with the absolute indifference of physics to either party.

The last thing Joel felt with his original legs was the arena floor, arriving at speed from below.

[Ding!]

[Gore-Ape Chieftain (Lv. 15, Stratum Boss) eliminated.]

[Stratum Cleared.]

[SOLO.]

The notification hung in the dark.

Joel Carrow barely registered it.

His lower body had been torn apart across the crater, and his consciousness had drifted somewhere far away.

Everything around him became white and silent. The pain reached him like a distant radio signal from a place he had never truly left.

His body was slowly knitting itself back together at the bottom of the crater.

Joel could see it happening, and that was the strangest part.

His x10,000 Regeneration was working through damage that should have taken an hour to heal, rebuilding his body in minutes.

From inside the static, he watched his own pelvis rebuild itself, bone by bone, as if his body still remembered exactly how it was supposed to be.

His legs came back like the rest of him—messy, obedient, and without asking for his permission.

The first real sensation to return was the ash landing on his face.

It drifted gently from the pale sky above, settling on a boy who, despite everything his body had just endured, was still alive.

He lay in his own crater for a long time afterward, because there is a difference between being alive and being ready to move, and a wise man does not confuse the two.

When he finally sat up, the system was waiting for him with the settlement, and the settlement was the closest thing to a ceremony that the Zenith Spire offered its survivors.

Light began rising from the Chieftain’s enormous corpse.

It wasn’t the grey mist of the Tear. This light was a clean bronze glow.

It gathered above the body, slowly taking shape.

Joel watched the reward form with the calm interest of a man watching a wire transfer arrive.

[Ding!]

[Stratum Boss Clearance Reward Issued.]

[Item Discovered]

Name: The Ash-Spine Halberd

Grade: Silver-tier

Durability: 100/120

Effect: +40 Strength, +15 Agility, +25 Physique.

• Passive - "Ashfall": strikes accumulate a heat-echo that burns through wounded tissue. Wounds dealt by this weapon resist natural and magical regeneration.

• Active - "Spine of the Barrens": once per day, grow the weapon’s reach with formed ash into a 3-meter wall of splintered stone.

[System Note: the pointed stick has retired with full honors. Its successor would like a word with the Second Stratum.]

Joel reached into the light and pulled out the weapon.

It settled into his scarred hands with the perfect weight, like it had been made for him.

A halberd was just a spear with opinions.

And since the gorge, Joel’s entire fighting style had been a spear with opinions.

The shaft was fused Rift-Iron darkened to the color of old blood, the head was a quarried crescent of monster-bone edged in Silver-tier metal, and the passive alone had been designed for a man who fought things that healed, which the system apparently found funny.

He stood, tested his weight on the new legs, and found that they held, and held better than the old ones ever had, because the forced adaptations had been depositing into the account all week and the payment had finally cleared.

One line of the settlement remained, and it was the one he had been waiting for since the arena, and the system delivered it with the dry caution of a dealer who had seen too many winners die famous.

[Leaderboard Registration: ’Joel’ - First Stratum Solo Clear.]

[Public registration or anonymous?]

’Anonymous,’ Joel answered, without a heartbeat of hesitation, because a Level 16 F-rank on a public board was not a trophy, it was a bounty, and the Mayor of Caelmont had already spent money on one attempt at his life. ’The house does not advertise its counting room.’

[Registration: Anonymous. Name withheld from public listing.]

[Alias logged: ’Grey’.]

The Chieftain’s lair held the rest of the estate, and Joel spent an hour collecting it, because a landlord’s mound contained the savings of a decade of tenants.

He left the human skulls where they lay, but he stripped the trophy racks of anything the system would price, and the Rift-Cores alone would have bought a street in the Rustward.

When he climbed out of the bone arena at last, the exit portal had already opened on the far side of the camp, a standing seam of pale light in the air where no seam had been before, patient as a door that knew it would be used eventually.

Joel Carrow stood in front of it with a Silver-tier halberd on his shoulder and five chips in his account, and behind him the Ash Barrens were silent in a way they had not been silent in thirty years, and every scavenger on the floor would wake tomorrow to a world with no landlords in it.

He stepped through the light, and the First Stratum let him go.
