"The cave you fear to enter holds the treasure you seek." — Joseph Campbell

Joel woke at noon into a city already talking about his work.

The morning shift in the Rustward had found the three Iron Hounds hanging at the alley entrance, spaced out with their collars showing.Full novel: SSS- Rank: I awakened a 100,000 Roulette Return System — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

By the time Joel washed and ate, the story had left the smog and moved up the hill. It spread through markets, garrison queues, and academy gates fast.

The Hounds published no statement, and the guild world read that silence clearly. A mercenary hall that loses a contract and stays quiet has received a message.

By lunch, cheap taverns resold the story. The street even gave Joel a name: "the Grey." He heard it first from a fish-seller and almost laughed under his hood. The Spire’s leaderboard had picked the exact same word, showing how good his camouflage really was.

Miss Albright returned the marked papers without a word. Her single line of red ink on Joel’s page read: "Be grey. Come back alive."

Joel spent the final class doing math. Sterling could not report a failed hit he never officially ordered.

That meant his next attack would use professional steel or political traps, timed for the enrollment trials at the end of the week. In a crowded arena, a boy could easily go missing.

Joel had three days to get a weapon that no scanner could read, no ledger could trace, and no assassin would expect.

He had a plan for one: a soul-bound Vanguard hidden in his shadow. The Chieftain was too big, but the boss of the Second Stratum was the exact right fit—eight legs and all.

After the evening bell, Joel sold Ferro’s falchion over Silas’s counter for 180 credits. Then he walked to the candidate portal hall with his halberd wrapped in chitin and oilcloth.

The line of light took him without ceremony and dropped him in a wet, dark place.

The Weeping Caverns earned their name honestly. Water ran slowly down wet black stone walls, glowing in long streaks.

Blue-green lure-moss grew on damp surfaces, providing dim light. Deep darkness filled the gaps between the plants, and the ceiling disappeared into cold, star-like glows.

The air felt cool and mineral. The entire stratum breathed, reversing its air drift every fifteen minutes, while the Spire’s deep hum vibrated through the stone.

The air drift was the first thing Joel mapped, because it was dangerous. Toxic grey puffballs called grave-bloom grew on vent mouths along upper paths.

Whenever the wind shifted downslope, the vents blew weightless, neurotoxic spore clouds. Joel spent his first hour tracking air movements with a lamp flame, marking vents with chalk arrows.

’Dose makes the poison, and direction makes the dose,’ he thought. ’Every grave-bloom down here is a pharmacy problem, and I just need to read the label.’

Next, he mapped the moss. The bioluminescent patches on the walls were planted in neat rows. The moss drew insects, insects drew prey, and bigger monsters followed the food. The entire stratum’s ecosystem relied on that light.

Joel cut three fresh moss pads with his knife, moved to a dry alcove upwind, and set them at the entrance as bait. He put out his lamp, stood in the tight stone passage with his wrapped halberd, and waited.

Half an hour later, the first Grave-Stalker climbed down the ceiling in total silence. Joel examined it carefully in the moss light.

It was the size of a large dog, built low to the ground with eight curved, hooked legs. The tips of its legs guided its movement because it had no eyes, only a smooth armored head above folded fangs. Its grey chitin shed light, and on its back, it carried a small patch of cultivated lure-moss.

It climbed down to the bait and picked up the first pad. Before it could react, Joel used Meteor Piercer, driving his shortened halberd through the gap behind its head. The cave stayed silent as the monster fell.

[Survival Accumulation: 8%.]

He looked at the 8% gain and the body. Clean kills earned basic loot, but taking big risks filled his gauge. For the rest of the night, he hunted in the web galleries.

Stacked silk curtains hung from the ceiling, and condensation made the stone floor slippery. He let scouts come to his stolen moss bait in pairs and groups of three.

He fought them in the dark on hard terrain, letting the system reward the danger.

The night became a pattern of chalk marks, fighting, and looting. Joel marked vents, fought upwind, and carefully collected venom sacs from every kill.

The venom could be made into antivenin, and his five remaining vials were not enough for a long trip. Once, a scout bit his halberd shaft. The venom smoked on the wood wrap, showing how dangerous it was.

[Survival Accumulation reset.]

Joel kept hunting after getting the Fate Point. He spent hours mapping the area as he cleared enemies.

Every web line ran downhill toward deep darkness where unbroken fields of moss grew near web cocoons holding old prey. Somewhere in the middle, a boss monster managed the web network, and every scout Joel killed was a loss it would eventually notice.

On his way back to his rest alcove, he saw a junction he had cleared earlier. The web curtain across it had already been repaired with fresh silk. The colony was active on his route, adjusting to a new predator just like he was adjusting to them.

[Survival Accumulation: 44%.]

Joel set his lamp in the alcove, laid out the venom sacs, and started crafting medicine from his harvest. Downslope in the unmapped dark, a boss creature began counting its missing scouts.
