The day after defeating my first monster, I washed my clothes as usual and helped with the inn’s laundry.
“Amanda, may I ask something? Could I train in this backyard?”
“Train with a sword? A real blade would be dangerous, but a wooden one would be fine.”
I’d thought about beginning sword training before I fell asleep. Amanda’s answer gave me permission to proceed.
“Thank you. Being allowed to practice with a wooden sword is more than enough.”
“Of course. You’re such a hard worker.”
We went indoors together and headed for the dining hall.
After another delicious breakfast, I returned to my room, put on my equipment, and left the inn.
At the guild, I joined the short line for Reina’s counter. She handled each adventurer efficiently, so my turn came quickly.
“What would you like today—work inside or outside the city?”
“Are there any requests inside the city from people in immediate difficulty?”
“There are many.”
Reina showed me several request sheets. Most involved domestic help like Marina’s. One concerned transporting furniture for someone who was moving.
“I’ll take this one. It should be quick and the reward looks good.”
“You chose well.”
The request involved washing dishes and cleaning a living room. It paid fifty copper coins, a high reward for that kind of work, even if Marina’s generosity had begun to distort my sense of money. It was more than twice what I’d earned outside the city the previous afternoon.
“Is this the place?”
After completing the paperwork, I followed the address to a neighborhood lined with impressive houses. It wasn’t the nobles’ quarter, but the residents clearly had money.
I rang the bell and waited outside.
“Are you the adventurer who accepted my domestic-help request?”
A gentle-looking woman came to the door.
“Yes. My name is Erik. I’m here to help with the housework.”
I showed her my adventurer card to prove the guild had sent me.
Inside, I found the living room and kitchen only slightly dirty.
“A servant usually cleans everything, but she fell ill and has been resting for a while. The house became this dirty in her absence. She’s very particular about cleanliness and would scold me if she saw it like this, so I submitted an urgent request.”
“This won’t take long. You may rest in another room if you wish.”
“May I? Then I’ll knit in that room. Call me if you need anything. Oh, I almost forgot—my name is Hanna. It’s nice to meet you.”
Hanna went to the other room, and I began with the kitchen.
A house this fine naturally used expensive plates. I washed them with great care to avoid breaking anything, then moved on to the living room.
The house hadn’t been very dirty to begin with, so I finished in less than an hour.
“Hanna, do you have a moment?”
“My, what is it?”
“I’ve finished, so I’d like you to inspect the work.”
Hanna looked surprised. When she saw the rooms, their transformation left her speechless.
“Your name was Erik, correct? Do you happen to know an alchemist named Marina?”
“I do. I recently accepted a cleaning request from her.”
“I thought so. I visited her house yesterday and dreaded going inside because it was usually filthy, but it was incredibly clean. I was astonished. I can’t believe the person who cleaned it came to my house as well. What a pleasant surprise.”
“Are you acquainted with Marina?”
Hanna explained that she was the wife of the chairman of a famous trading company in the capital. The company handled Marina’s products, so the two women had known each other for some time.
“What a coincidence.”
“It truly is. I submitted this request the day before yesterday, before I’d ever heard of you. And yet the same boy came to help me. Hee hee.”
Hanna laughed happily, then signed the report and added a written evaluation. Once again, I received an extra silver coin.
“If I’m ever in trouble again, I’d like to ask for you.”
“My rank is too low for designated requests, but if you submit one to the guild, I’ll accept it again if I see it.”
“I’ll look forward to that.”
I returned to the Adventurers’ Guild. Reina no longer looked surprised when she saw the additional reward. She accepted the report, processed the request, and paid me.
I then asked to see outside-city work.
This time, instead of gathering herbs, I accepted a slime-extermination request. It wasn’t a standing request and paid unusually well.
“Things like this happen? It’s another slime request, but the reward is much better.”
“Occasionally. Someone may need materials urgently. Slime materials are used in many ways, so people sometimes submit special requests when they need them quickly. You’re fortunate it was still available.”
“I am! Then I’ll be going.”
After saying goodbye to Reina, I left the guild and headed outside the city.
