The Adventurers’ Guild was about a five-minute walk from the inn.

The building was both wider and taller than the inn. Although it was still morning, people of all kinds were coming and going.

The building was crowded. A long row of reception counters had been set up to handle everyone, and at the counter with the shortest line I spotted a woman matching Amanda’s description.

When I started toward her counter, I heard people whispering around me for some reason.

“Hey, is that kid heading toward the Ice Woman?”

“What a shame. He’s so cute, but Reina’s looks must’ve lured him in.”

“I bet one gold coin she makes him cry!”

“Who’d take a bet when the outcome’s guaranteed?”

They were even wagering on what would happen to me.

I did my best to ignore them and approached the counter.

“Excuse me. Amanda referred me to you.”

“I see. Are you here to register as an adventurer? Have you read The Adventurer’s Handbook?”

“The inn lent it to me yesterday and I started reading, but I’ve only made it halfway through.”

Her tone had been cold at first, but when she learned I’d read half the handbook, her demeanor seemed to soften slightly.

“You read half of that thick book in one day? That’s more than enough.”

“I enjoy reading.”

“I see. That’s a good habit.”

Reina took out a registration form and handed it to me.

Registering as an adventurer was surprisingly simple. I only had to fill in the required information and pay one silver coin.

“You possess a special skill.”

“But that’s all I have. I don’t have any other skills, so I thought I’d begin by gathering medicinal herbs or doing jobs inside the city.”

“A sound decision. Adventure may be an important part of an adventurer’s profession, but the adventurers who don’t die are the ones who avoid adventures. Seek them if you want your name remembered. Avoid them if you want to survive.”

“I want to survive, so I’ll avoid dangerous adventures whenever possible.”

The corners of Reina’s mouth rose slightly. When she actually smiled, the noisy guild hall fell silent.

“R-Reina smiled?”

“No way! I’ve never seen her smile before!”

Whispers gradually spread through the hall, but Reina ignored them and continued the registration process.

Once it was complete, she produced a small plate.

“This is your adventurer card. Place one drop of your blood on it, and it will become yours.”

She handed me the card and a needle. I pricked my fingertip and let a drop of blood fall onto the card. It flashed briefly, then displayed my name and adventurer rank.

There were five ranks: Iron, Copper, Silver, Gold, and Platinum. My card displayed Iron rank.

“Will you be taking a request today?”

“Yes. I don’t have much money left. Could you recommend something suitable for a novice?”

“My recommendations differ depending on whether you want work inside or outside the city.”

“…Inside the city, please. I don’t own any equipment yet.”

Reina disappeared into the room behind the counters. About five minutes later, she returned with several request sheets.

They included domestic help, finding lost items, assisting workers, and other similar jobs.

“All of these are suitable for novices. They aren’t dangerous, but they don’t pay very much.”

“They still pay enough to live on. Can I accept several requests at once?”

“The number depends on your rank. At the lowest rank, you may only accept one at a time. Once you’ve completed it and reported back, however, you may immediately accept another.”

“Understood. I’ll begin with this domestic-help request. It only involves cleaning.”

Domestic help, with a reward of one silver coin. That alone would pay for a night at the inn.

I currently had three silver coins to my name. I’d left the village with ten, but the carriage cost three, my clothes cost one, two nights at the inn cost two, and registration took another one.

Seen that way, the clothing looked expensive. Even so, I needed clothes that wouldn’t get me laughed out of the guild. A similar set purchased normally would have cost several silver coins.

“The request says they need someone capable of cleaning. Can you do that?”

“Yes. I did it regularly in the village. I can’t move large furniture, but the request doesn’t mention anything like that, so I believe I can manage it.”

“You chose after reading the request carefully. Then it should be fine.”

Reina nodded and processed the request.

“This is the completion report. Have the client fill it in after you finish the job.”

For city requests, the client normally completed a report at the end. Only a signature was required, but a client could also add an evaluation for especially good work.

High evaluations contributed to an adventurer’s standing with the guild. Reina explained that anyone who wished to rise in rank quickly needed to work carefully.

After receiving the report form, I left the guild and headed for the client’s address.
