Capital First People’s Hospital.
The pungent smell of disinfectant was unpleasant. Xie Kejia paced anxiously outside the emergency room, tear stains still visible on her face.
When the door finally opened, a crowd surged forward.
“Doctor, how is my daughter?”
Yan Feng asked urgently, his brows furrowed deeply. The person lying inside was his precious treasure, cherished since childhood. If anything happened to her, how could he, left all alone, go on living?
“Ahhh, that bastard!”
Before the doctor could speak, a voice from inside the emergency room interrupted. Wiping sweat from his forehead, the doctor hesitated before saying, “…Parents, come with me.”
Yan Jiaojiao was wheeled into a VIP room. Since waking up in the emergency room and blurting out a curse, she had fainted again.
As Yan Jiaojiao groggily opened her eyes, she met a pair of eyes from which tears were continuously falling, followed by a piercing shriek of “Doctor!”
The loud, shrill female voice made her head throb again. The doctor examined her carefully, then left with a sigh.
“Am I not long for this world?”
With gauze stuck to her forehead, Yan Jiaojiao’s crystal-clear eyes beneath her brows were filled with indignation, and her red lips were tightly pursed, as if she might bite at any moment.
It had to be admitted that the pampered young lady was beautiful even in her most disheveled state. The young male doctor couldn’t handle it and averted his gaze.
“Ahem, don’t worry, you’ll live a long life.”
Only after hearing this did Yan Jiaojiao relax, leaning back against the bed to survey the room. Her gaze fell on Xie Kejia standing nearby, her eyes brimming with tears.
“Big-head Jia, are you mourning me already?”
Xie Kejia excitedly threw herself at her. “Ahhhh, I knew the doctor was lying! What amnesia? You clearly still remember me.”
Yan Jiaojiao dodged her disdainfully. “Of course I remember you. You still owe me over a dozen bags—don’t think you can weasel out of it.”
Xie Kejia froze, her expression turning somewhat dazed. She hurriedly ran out into the corridor. “Doctor, there’s something wrong with her brain! Give her a thorough check-up right away.”
Prompted by her shout, the doctor hooked Yan Jiaojiao up to various machines. After several rounds of tests, Yan Feng also emerged from the head doctor’s office.
Doctor: “The patient has suffered memory loss due to the car accident. Whether it’s partial or complete will depend on when she wakes up.”
Yan Feng received the scan report, his fingertips trembling. “My daughter… might not remember me?”
Doctor: “It’s possible.”
…
“So your memory stops at age eighteen?”
“Mm-hmm. You still owe me over a dozen bags, don’t you?”
Xie Kejia clicked her tongue. This girl’s obsession with bags was truly ingrained in her bones.
She handed an apple to Yan Jiaojiao. “Let me clarify—I paid you back for those bags during freshman year. It made me live on instant noodles for a whole month.”
“Also, you’re a senior in college now…”
Yan Jiaojiao frowned, a sharp pain shooting through her nerves. She clutched her head as fragments of memories flashed by.
“White moonlight, substitute, fiancé…”
These were the same images that had appeared the moment she woke up in the emergency room. After about two minutes, the threads in her mind gradually became clearer.
She opened her eyes again, a single tear tracing down the corner of her eye.
Yan Feng looked at her with a face full of worry, his hands clasped tightly together as if he were suffering even more than she was.
“Dad.”
“Yes.” Hearing his daughter remember him, Yan Feng’s approaching steps trembled. He gently stroked the back of her head with his large hand. “Don’t force yourself to remember what you can’t. Just remembering your dad is enough.”
“What about Xie Chuanyan?”
Before Yan Feng could bask in his feelings for long, he heard the name of his future son-in-law. His expression immediately darkened. Jiaojiao had always been clingy with that boy even before her amnesia—who would have thought she’d still be thinking of him after losing her memory!Feeling upset, she simultaneously ignored Yan Jiaojiao’s gritted-teeth tone.
Xie Kejia noticed Yan Jiaojiao’s unusual expression and thought she was angry, quickly explaining, “Jiaojiao, my brother just flew to France yesterday. As soon as he heard about your car accident, he immediately rushed back and will be here in a few hours.”
“The driver who hit you has already been found. My brother hired a professional lawyer to file a lawsuit, and that driver won’t get away with less than five years in prison.”
After listening, Yan Jiaojiao’s expression remained calm. “What is my relationship with Xie Chuanyan now?”
Xie Kejia was somewhat surprised. After all, Yan Jiaojiao had always called him “Brother Chuanyan” in the past.
That affectionate nickname was her exclusive privilege.
Now she was using his full name—was she really angry?
“You and my brother are already engaged. They say you’ll get married once you graduate from university.”
Yan Feng pursed his lips disapprovingly upon hearing this. “Let’s discuss this later.”
“Who wants to marry him!”
Two voices almost overlapped. Xie Kejia looked at Yan Jiaojiao in disbelief, her palms sweating.
Yan Feng was also surprised but said nothing.
Xie Kejia: “Jiaojiao, didn’t you say you’d marry no one but my brother?”
Yan Jiaojiao grabbed the blanket and crumpled it fiercely, her delicate brows furrowed and her face flushed with anger. “Hah, I’d rather marry a dog in this lifetime than marry him!”
…
“Clang.”
The hospital room door opened. A man in a tailored suit, with a refined and coldly handsome face, narrowed his phoenix eyes behind gold-rimmed glasses, making his frosty expression even colder. Standing at 188 cm tall, his gaze always carried an arrogant and haughty demeanor.
After a few seconds of silence, his thin lips parted. “Check her brain.”
The room was filled with the city’s most famous doctors. An experienced elder assessed Yan Jiaojiao’s condition and asked a few simple questions.
Yan Jiaojiao’s thinking and logic were relatively clear. Aside from losing several years of memory, she seemed to have no major issues.
The doctor respectfully addressed the man sitting upright on the sofa. “President Xie, Miss Yan is physically fine. As for the memory loss caused by the car accident, the recovery time is uncertain, but most patients recover within a few months.”
“You can take Miss Yan to familiar places to walk around. It might help her recover faster.”
Xie Chuanyan looked at Yan Jiaojiao, who was glaring at him angrily, and said coldly, “Are you sure there are no other issues?”
The doctor met his sharp gaze and wiped the sweat from his forehead.
“Miss Yan… she may be experiencing memory confusion.”
Yan Feng: “What does that mean? What’s wrong with my daughter?”
Doctor: “This isn’t common in hospitals, but it’s not serious. We can only rely on patient guidance to help Miss Yan recover her memory.”
Yan Jiaojiao crunched into an apple. “What are you all muttering about? It’s so noisy.”
Xie Kejia walked to Yan Jiaojiao’s bedside, her eyes filled with pity, and held up a finger. “Sweetie, what number is this?”
“Two.”
“Ah… my dear…”
Yan Jiaojiao rolled her eyes. “I meant you’re the ‘two’ [idiot].”
She raised her chin and looked at the doctors. “I want to be discharged. This place stinks.”
Yan Feng tried to soothe her. “My dear, be good and stay in the hospital for a few more days for observation.”
“No!”
At this moment, Yan Jiaojiao was like a rebellious child, yanking out her IV needle and trying to get out of bed.
Yan Feng reached out halfway, only to be momentarily blinded by an inexplicable gust of wind. When his vision cleared, he saw his precious daughter already held in Xie Chuanyan’s arms.
Yan Jiaojiao, pressed against the man, seemed unusually docile, as if this had happened countless times before. She quickly snapped out of it and struggled. “You rotten scumbag, let go of me!””Be good, sweetheart.”
Xie Chuanyan gently patted her back, his magnetic and mellow voice carrying a hint of temptation.
In the eyes of outsiders, they were a sweet and harmonious couple. No matter how busy Xie Chuanyan was, he would call every day to coax her to sleep, and each time he returned from a business trip abroad, he would bring back many gifts.
She always enjoyed special, exclusive favor from him. No matter how much she acted out, she could always see indulgence and adoration in his eyes. Only Yan Jiaojiao knew that all of this was an illusion!
