It was already in the early 90s at the time, and she was fresh from her divorce. By then, she had long shed the meek, doormat personality and had already begun to distance herself from that family.
However, she was conservative in the end, so she never thought of divorcing. That was until she discovered his infidelity.
And who was the third party, you ask?
It was none other than Wang Xiuying.
However, they tried to make it look like she had been the unfaithful one. It was believable too, because her own mother ’testified’.
Her own mother willingly dirtied her own biological daughter to gain a place in a family that might not even truly appreciate her. It was ridiculous.
Though she fought back and cleared her name, by the end of the long divorce proceedings, she found her heart dying.
So many of these people who went against her were people she had trusted and knew her well, including her weaknesses. These were all attacked.
One of these issues was her inability to give birth.
They conveniently forgot why that happened in the first place. Wasn’t it because she was so weak and malnourished that when she had an accident and fell into the river, her body suffered permanent damage?
Even if she had gained a bit of footing and self-respect, when one was hit repeatedly by people she once saw as family, no one would be able to stand straight for long.
But then her paternal grandfather, recently returned from his exile, finally found her. According to him, the two of them were the last true remnants of the Su Family.
From him, she found out about a whole new world that was so unbelievable, she did not believe it at first.
She was introduced to supernatural abilities. Those who held such powers were called the Variants—and she was apparently one of them.
It was, unsurprisingly, a well-hidden fact of the world, known only by the families who actually had it. There were also a limited number of Variants per bloodline, at most three, so even if some things revealed throughout the long river of history, they were taken as fantasy instead.
There were multiple types of powers. Her grandfather gave her an old book explaining its history and mentioning what their family knew about other families. In that book, the ink and calligraphy varied, meaning some data was added later and that it was updated through time.
There were various abilities that existed, for example, there was fire power, lightning power, invincibility, invisibility or camouflage, super speed, super strength, water control, healing power, and so on.
Her maternal family had a very special one, which was a personal space only they could access to.
There was only one person per generation who could inherit this ability, and there was a recorded maximum of three per power. That was to say, only three people could ever have it at the same time, and they generally manifested in unique ways.
For instance, in the now-fallen Fei family, one person could passively increase the temperature up to a meter away from his body, while another could outright make fire, and so on.
There were also very rare cases wherein someone had a combination of two powers. This could happen if they are descendants of two bloodlines, but this was extremely unusual and had only happened twice in thousands of years. The fight for them was bloody.
She happened to be one of these miracles.
She had apparently inherited the Space from her maternal side, which automatically combined with her wood ability, which was gained from the paternal side. This created an absolutely unique space like no other.
As mentioned, each power holder would manifest their bloodline power differently. For their family, the space molded depending on the owner’s need and personality.
For example, a female ancestor (if the Variant is a female, they would not be married out) had a void static space, wherein any inanimate object placed inside would preserve its state when it entered.
Some spaces also slowed down shelf life, but were not static. However, they were likely much bigger than those with special effects. Some were small, but the user could enter it and remain inside for an indefinite amount of time, usually for safety reasons.
There were also spaces that were very, very large, but could only be accessed when standing on an anchor point, and so on.
The last recorded space power in the book was a small space that could store living things. Apparently, this space once saved important people back in a war and had also been used to rescue several people from dire straits.
This was her uncle’s power, and he died after someone betrayed him because of it.
It also upgraded the more one used them, though the changes could be big or small, depending on various things like talent and circumstance.
There was also a ’money grubbing’ space that required jade to operate.
Unsurprisingly, after the purge of intellectuals and landlords, it remained un-updated. A lot of the powers had also been lost during that time. Almost all of the families with Variant bloodline were also in the upper tier of society back then, after all.
Even if they dared use their powers when being hunted down, chances are, all those bullets would focus on them.
Even if someone had superstrength or could control the wind, they were still no match for a rain of bullets.
Now...it was estimated that there were probably not many left behind. Among the previous generation, they had probably gone near-extinct.
And the newborns—like herself—were completely unaware of their abilities until they were awakened through special means.
It made her wonder how many of them were now running around in this world.
