“I’ll smack you silly, you little cabbage!”
The girl who dropped out of the sky swung the frying pan in her hand and sent a shrieking zombie flying with a single blow.
She hit the ground rolling to shed the impact, and before the other zombies could close in, she sprang up without hesitation and bolted the other way.
The zombies in this hospital had mostly been cleared out already, otherwise she wouldn’t have dared come here alone.
Swatting another zombie aside as easily as before, Bai Zhuo vaulted lightly over a railing, hunting for any medicine that might have been left behind.
“ROAAR!!”
Bai Zhuo whipped her head around, not good! The zombies had gone into a frenzy!
With no time to see what was even inside the cabinet, she swept the whole lot of it into her pack.
Something in there was bound to be useful!
She leapt out through the shattered third-floor window and, before she’d even found her footing, threw herself to the right, narrowly dodging the spikes that suddenly erupted from the ground.
Flipping upright, Bai Zhuo narrowed her eyes and stared hard at the handful of people who had appeared in front of her.
The man at their head looked down on her from on high, or rather, at the frying pan in her hand.
“So you’re that space-type ability user?”
Space-type ability user?
Bai Zhuo got to her feet, brushed the dirt off her clothes, and let out a scornful snort. “Which of your eyes made me look like a space-type ability user?”
The newcomer waved a hand impatiently, just take her back first and sort it out later.
Seeing the two men closing in on her, a cold glint flashed through Bai Zhuo’s eyes, and she swung her frying pan without a moment’s hesitation.
Nobody had taken her, or her frying pan, seriously. These people had instinctively filed Bai Zhuo, a girl who looked barely of age, under “weakling.”
The man raised his arm to block. The instant the frying pan met it, he seemed to hear the sound of his bones splintering.
“AAH!!”
A smile hung at the corner of Bai Zhuo’s mouth, but her eyes were pure, merciless ferocity.
Did they really take her for a soft persimmon to squeeze at will? The pan swept sideways, but this time, when it struck the other man’s neck, it rang with the clang of metal on metal.
Not good!
A metal-type ability user!
A metal-type could partially metalize his body, true, but there was no way he could turn his whole body to metal!
A wild light flickered in Bai Zhuo’s eyes. She drove a kick straight into his weak spot while at the same time raising the pan and slamming it down hard on his head!
Whatever that frying pan was made of, it actually caved the metal-type’s skull right in.
And this was the combat power of a space-type ability user?!
Bai Zhuo didn’t hesitate for an instant. Having dealt with the two of them, she charged at the last man standing behind.
An arrow of flame shot dead straight at her. Bai Zhuo twisted aside to dodge it, then flung the frying pan at the man.
The pan smashed squarely into his face, and blood instantly gushed from his nose. Bai Zhuo walked over, seized his wrist, and squeezed, just a little, and the man let out a scream like a pig being slaughtered.
His wrist bone! She’d crushed it!
“Talk. Who told you I’m a space-type ability user?”
The man clenched his jaw, wearing the look of someone who’d sooner die than say a word.
The corner of Bai Zhuo’s mouth curved up, and she stomped straight down on his knee.
“CRACK—”
That was the sound of a kneecap breaking.
“AAAH!!! I’ll talk! I’ll talk!”
“A squad came to our base a week ago, they said they’d run into a space-type ability user out here! The people up top ordered us to bring the space-type in!”
Bai Zhuo knocked him out with a single punch, picked up her frying pan, and turned to leave.
These pieces of trash could stay behind for the zombies chasing after her.
Ignoring the screams and the sounds of chewing rising up behind her, Bai Zhuo found the car she’d driven in, floored the gas pedal, and the car tore away.
Bai Zhuo smirked. Space-type ability user, my ass, that was her system inventory!
The apocalypse had come without the slightest warning. From the first zombie appearing to the full outbreak of the zombie horde, it had taken all of three days.
Water and power gone, all signals cut off, those with the means fled with their whole families, while those who couldn’t get out simply scraped by, waiting to die.
Bai Zhuo had no father, no mother, one person fed meant the whole family fed. [2]she answered to no one, it made no difference where she went jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_2639889_1_2').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_2639889_1_2', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top center', relative: true, offset: [-7, 0], }); Anywhere she went was the same, so she might as well stay put.
The system had crashed straight down onto her one time while she was out scavenging for supplies, that was also the first time she’d heard that staticky boyish voice.
【Beep, The Loot-Box System is at your service. Complete missions to earn loot-box draws, the supplies inside each box are random. Please complete plenty of missions, host, to obtain survival supplies and other items.】
【Host, please do your best to survive in this apocalypse.】
The tires screeched against the road. Bai Zhuo shook her head, pulling herself out of the memories the system had bound to her.
Just surviving, how could that ever be enough?
Bai Zhuo hopped out of the car and strode up the stairs.
She had to make something of herself.
She couldn’t stay here any longer. When that base didn’t see its people come back, they were sure to send more, she had to pack up and leave as fast as she could.
Before going in, Bai Zhuo made a point of taking the supplies she’d packed up from the hospital out of her system inventory first, and only then opened the door.
“I’m back.”
A girl lay sickly and limp on the sofa. Bai Zhuo went over and pressed a hand to her forehead, and couldn’t help frowning.
Still running a fever?
She’d picked the girl up yesterday, collapsed right outside her door, burning up all over.
Bai Zhuo was no bleeding-heart saint, least of all in an environment like the apocalypse, if she hadn’t recognized this person, she wouldn’t have taken in a stranger so casually.
She dug out a fever shot and injected it, then let out a sigh.
Xue Yanhen, oh, Xue Yanhen, whether you pull through or not is up to your own fortune now.
She packed everything she meant to take into the system inventory, then turned, scooped up the still-unconscious Xue Yanhen, and hurried down the stairs.
The zombies in this area had long since been cleared out. If not for this sudden turn of events, the two of them could have kept scraping by here a while longer.
Such a shame.
Xue Yanhen came to on the road out of the city. She propped herself up on her arms with effort, sat up, and asked in a hoarse voice, “Where are we going?”
“To the next city over. We can’t stay here anymore.”
Xue Yanhen pressed her lips together. She was about to speak when Bai Zhuo cut her off.
“If you’re going to tell me to leave you behind, save it. Since I brought you out, I never planned on giving up on you. If you’ve got the energy to fret over nonsense, you’d be better off resting well, getting back on your feet quickly is what matters most.”
“Okay.”
“I gave you a fever shot, and there’s water and food beside you. Eat a little if you can! Oh, hell!”
Before she’d even finished, Bai Zhuo yanked the wheel hard, swerving around a zombie that had suddenly leapt out from the roadside brush.
She glanced at the fuel gauge, and her heart sank, almost out of gas. She had to find a gas station.
Xue Yanhen covered her mouth and coughed twice, then said in a low voice, “There’s a gas station about ten kilometers ahead, but the way things are now, it’s probably out of service.”
Bai Zhuo gave a soft laugh. “We should at least go take a look.”
【System, how many loot-box draws do I have right now?】
【Twenty-seven, host.】
Tch.
Bai Zhuo tossed her hair back and tapped the hand resting on the wheel twice. Before she’d even made up her mind, an urgent voice rang out.
“Look out!!”
