“Can you even get it up?”
“You can’t even leave a child behind. Why don’t you just go die!”
The vicious curses had barely fallen when Cheng An’an’s consciousness returned.
She found herself standing in a dim adobe-brick room, holding a kettle of boiling water.
A flood of chaotic memories surged into her mind.
She, Cheng An’an—the strongest fighter and biggest slacker on the most powerful team in the apocalypse—had actually traveled through time during the self-destruction of the Zombie Emperor.
The good news was that there were no flesh-eating monsters here, nor endless battles to the death.
The bad news?
She had transmigrated into a period novel she had once read to pass the time, becoming the vicious female supporting character who was destined for a miserable ending.
And the man she was pointing the kettle at was her husband of one month, Shen Yu—the future supervillain who would become twisted because of her.
A man who could move nothing but his head and hands, with the rest of his body completely paralyzed.
The original Cheng An’an had been sold to the Shen family by her greedy parents for fifty yuan as a wife to bring good fortune to Shen Yu.
From the bottom of her heart, she had looked down on her disabled husband.
After marrying into the family, she was filled with resentment.
She dared not do anything openly, but behind closed doors, she often pinched him, starved him, and cursed him with the most vicious words imaginable.
Today, the original owner had finally reached her limit.
She had boiled a kettle of water, intending to force Shen Yu into divorcing her. She had even planned to go all the way and scald him to death once and for all.
Cheng An’an looked down at the kettle in her hand, then at the man on the bed who would one day repay every bit of the original owner’s abuse a hundredfold.
She felt like she had a massive headache.
She had finally escaped that damned apocalypse. She was sick and tired of fighting and killing.
Shen Yu lay on the bed, his eyes bloodshot, wishing he could carve a thousand wounds into her with nothing but his gaze.
“What? Lost your nerve?”
He sneered.
“You’re only capable of this much, Cheng An’an. If you have the guts, pour it on me.”
Cheng An’an ignored him and simply looked around the room.
Walls made of earthen bricks. A wooden table with peeling paint. Yellowed newspapers pasted over the windows.
The conditions were crude.
But how long had it been since she had breathed such clean air?
How long since she had seen a room this peaceful and safe?
In the apocalypse, any unexpected sound or movement could cost her life.
This is wonderful.
She sighed inwardly with genuine emotion.
Seeing that she remained completely unfazed and was instead looking around with an intoxicated expression, Shen Yu’s anger burned even hotter.
“What are you looking at? I’m talking to you. Are you deaf?”
Cheng An’an finally turned her gaze back to his face.
His features were twisted by rage, yet his natural heroic handsomeness was still difficult to conceal.
For some reason, she suddenly felt a little sorry for him.
“Sigh.”
Cheng An’an sighed.
“You want to stand up so badly that you can take revenge on me. And me? My biggest dream is simply to have somewhere safe where I can lie down and sleep until the end of time.”
“How about… we switch places?”
The instant that thought crossed her mind—
The world spun!
Cheng An’an’s perspective suddenly dropped.
She found herself lying on the bed.
Except for her head, her entire body felt as though it had been filled with lead, heavy and completely immobile.
And standing beside the bed was a horrified-looking “herself.”
Cheng An’an froze.
Her body-swapping ability—which in the apocalypse could only be used on mindless creatures—had actually come with her?
And after transmigrating, it had even evolved?
Did that mean her other abilities were still with her too?
Before she could think any further, Shen Yu had already recovered from his initial shock.
He looked down in disbelief, raised his leg, then cautiously bent his waist and flexed his stiff, unfamiliar fingers.
The unfamiliar softness against his chest and the impossibly slender waist made him pause.
But that slight discomfort was quickly overwhelmed by a tsunami of joy.
He could move.
He could really move!
The despair of being imprisoned inside a paralyzed body for countless days and nights transformed into overwhelming ecstasy at finally being able to move freely.
However, that joy lasted only a brief moment before being completely swallowed by his hatred.
Shen Yu raised his head.
The originally beautiful, gentle almond-shaped eyes were now filled with a terrifying, violent fury.
Slowly, the corners of his lips curled upward into an utterly cruel smile.
Step by step, he walked toward Cheng An’an, who lay helplessly on the bed.
“How does it feel to be unable to move?”
He was going to repay every bit of suffering and fear he had endured in the past a hundredfold!
Yet the screams and pleas for mercy he had expected never came.
Cheng An’an, lying on the bed, let out a long, contented sigh.
A look of extreme satisfaction appeared on her face as she slowly closed her eyes.
“Ah… I can finally get a good night’s sleep.”
The moment she finished speaking, long, steady breaths filled the room.
She had actually fallen asleep instantly.
Shen Yu: “?”
The cruel smile on his face instantly froze.
What was this supposed to mean?
Some new form of humiliation?
Shouldn’t she have been terrified out of her mind, crying and begging him to switch their bodies back?
How could she possibly fall asleep?
“Cheng An’an, get up!” Shen Yu roared furiously.
But the moment he spoke, the soft, sweet female voice that came out nearly gave him goosebumps himself.
Cheng An’an: ZzᶻZzᶻ
“If you keep pretending to be dead, I’ll pour this boiling water all over your face!”
He viciously threatened her as he picked up the kettle from the table again.
The spout moved closer to Cheng An’an’s face.
Closer.
And closer.
The scorching steam was already rising against her skin.
Cheng An’an: ZzᶻZzᶻZzᶻ
Shen Yu: “…”
Was this woman a pig? How could she sleep through this?!
Shen Yu trembled with rage.
With a loud bang, he threw the kettle aside and reached out to grab Cheng An’an by the throat.
“I’ll strangle you!”
Just then, the bedroom door was suddenly slammed open.
“An’an! Are you bullying Yu’er again?!”
Shen’s mother, Wang Xiulan, had just returned from work in the fields.
She had heard the argument coming from her son’s room before she had even entered the house. Her heart had immediately dropped, and without thinking, she rushed inside.
What she saw nearly stopped her heart.
Her daughter-in-law was viciously strangling her son, looking as though she intended to kill him!
“Help! Murder!”
Wang Xiulan’s eyes instantly turned red.
She charged toward Shen Yu like a madwoman.
“You heartless, poisonous woman! My son served his country and defended our homeland, and this is what he ended up like! How dare you bully him? I’m going to tear you apart today!”
“Mom, no, listen to me—”
Shen Yu instinctively tried to explain.
But the moment he spoke, the clear, crisp female voice sent a chill straight through him.
He had forgotten.
He was Cheng An’an now.
In Wang Xiulan’s eyes, he was that vicious wife who abused her son.
“I’ll listen to your nonsense! You still have the nerve to make excuses?”
Wang Xiulan was a force of nature.
She grabbed the broom from the corner and chased Shen Yu around the entire room.
Shen Yu, a reconnaissance soldier who had undergone rigorous military training, was now being driven into retreat by a rural woman, jumping and dodging all over the place.
“Ow! Don’t hit my face!”
“Mom, calm down!”
“I’m… ow, my waist!”
And the true culprit behind all of this, Cheng An’an, was lying comfortably on the spacious bed, sleeping more soundly than ever.
Amid the chaos in the room and the duet of Wang Xiulan beating the “real” her—
Was this what a lullaby sounded like in peaceful times?
She loved it.
