They had claimed one of the quieter corners of the library, far enough from the main tables that the soft sounds of other students felt distant.

Afternoon light filtered through the tall windows in warm stripes across the wooden floor and the chessboard between them.

Ren sat comfortably in his chair, one hand resting near the edge of the board as he considered his next move.Full novel: The Almighty. — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Souna sat across from him, posture perfect as always, fingers lightly steepled while she waited.

Behind him, Tsubaki’s hands worked steadily along his shoulders, thumbs pressing into the muscles with quiet, practiced care.

The three of them existed in an easy silence for a while, simply sharing the space.

Souna moved a knight, then glanced up.

“I’m thinking of creating a study group.”

Ren raised an eyebrow, still looking at the board.

“For real?

That’s nice.”

Her eyes narrowed slightly.

“What do you mean ‘that’s nice’?

I want you to join us.”

Tsubaki’s voice came from behind him, calm and pleasant.

“Yes, join us, Ren-kun.

It’ll be fun.”

He made a face.

“I already hate school.

Imagine doing schoolwork after hours.” A small, theatrical shudder ran through him.

Tsubaki leaned a little closer, her breath brushing the side of his neck.

“It’s not that bad.

I mean… don’t you want to spend more time with us?”

“Nah.”

Both girls went quiet.

He could practically feel the twin frowns forming.

A second later Tsubaki shifted.

She leaned down until her lips were right beside his ear, then gently caught the lobe between her teeth, nipping just hard enough to make him still.

Her voice dropped into a soft, coaxing whisper.

“Come on…”

” Nah”

Souna watched the entire thing, and the familiar spark of jealousy flickered across her face.

Without a word she stood, stepped around the table in two smooth strides, and settled herself directly onto Ren’s lap, straddling him.

One hand found the side of his neck as she leaned in and began pressing slow, deliberate kisses along the line of his throat.

Ren didn’t move.

He simply sat there, chess game forgotten, and let both of them continue.

Tsubaki’s soft bites at his ear, Souna’s mouth warm against his neck.

The quiet of the library wrapped around the three of them like a private curtain.

‘ This is nice,’ he thought.

They never bothered returning to class.

The quiet corner of the library remained theirs for the rest of the afternoon.

Chess pieces slowly shifted between soft conversation and longer stretches of comfortable silence.

Tsubaki’s hands occasionally returned to Ren’s shoulders; Souna eventually claimed the seat beside him instead of across the board.

No one came looking for them, and none of them felt the need to leave.

When the final bell rang and the school began to empty, Ren finally stood and stretched.

He was halfway across the courtyard, already thinking about heading home, when he spotted her.

Rias stood on the stone stairs leading up toward the main building, crimson hair catching the late-afternoon light.

She wasn’t surrounded by her usual group.

She was alone, waiting, posture straight and expression carefully composed.

Ren’s mouth curved into a familiar smirk as he changed direction.

Rias’s eyes met his without flinching.

“Yes.

And something else.

Could you come with me?”

He didn’t hesitate.

“Well, since you asked nicely.

Let’s go.”

As he reached her, he casually slid an arm around her waist, pulling her lightly against his side.

The contact was easy, natural.

Rias’s cheeks warmed almost immediately, a soft flush rising beneath her fair skin, but she kept her expression steady.

She refused to let the reaction show more than that.

She would show him the serious side of Rias Gremory today.

Together they began walking, his arm still resting comfortably around her.

….

In the ORC, Ren sat comfortably on one of the couches, completely relaxed despite the unusually serious atmosphere in the room.

Rias sat opposite him on another couch, with her peerage gathered around her; Akeno stood nearby, Kiba remained quietly observant, and Koneko sat with a small packet of cookies in her hands, eating them one after another while keeping her eyes on Ren.

Everyone looked fairly serious.

That was something Ren hadn’t seen from them in a while.

He glanced around the room before deciding to get straight to the point.

“So, you want to ask me about Koneko’s sister, Kuroka?”

The moment he said the name, the entire room froze.

Koneko’s hand stopped halfway toward her mouth, her expression immediately darkening as she heard her sister’s name.

Rias and Kiba stared at Ren in surprise, while Akeno’s eyes narrowed slightly as she quietly studied him.

Rias was the first to speak.

“Y-yes…” she said carefully.

“How do you know her?”

“I don’t.”

Ren shrugged casually.

“She just randomly came to me last night and tried to kill me or something.

I don’t know.” He leaned back against the couch as though he was just talking about someone knocking on his door.

Koneko’s expression remained tense.

Rias exchanged a quick glance with Akeno before looking back at Ren.

She clearly wasn’t completely convinced.

“So you know about the supernatural world?” she asked.

“Yeah.

Quite a bit, actually.”

Ren rested his arm against the back of the couch.

“Though I’m still not clear about all the real details.”

Cap!

He knew more than practically everyone in the room, but there was no reason for them to know that.

Ren suddenly looked toward Akeno.

“Could you get me some tea?”

Akeno smiled immediately.

“Of course, Ren-kun.”

She gave him a small wink before walking toward the tea set.

Rias watched the interaction for a moment before turning her attention back to him.

“So…

you’ve known about us since when?”

“I don’t know.

A year or something.”

Ren shrugged again.

“I ran into a Devil who spilled everything about you guys.

I was like, ‘What?'” The source of this chapter is g.com.

‘Straight cap!’ he thought internally.

Rias stared at him for a few seconds, clearly trying to determine whether he was telling the truth.

“Oh.”

She paused.

“So are you also the Kuoh Hunter?”

Ren raised an eyebrow.

“What with that name?” He shook his head.

“It’s so lame.”

A small grin appeared on his face.

“But yes.

I definitely am.”

The atmosphere instantly changed.

Kiba’s hand moved toward his sword, his expression becoming serious as he prepared himself for a possible fight.

Koneko stopped eating entirely and shifted into a guarded stance, her eyes locked onto Ren.

Rias, however, didn’t move.

She simply continued staring at him.

“Why didn’t you tell us?”

Ren looked at her for a moment before giving a small shrug.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Rias fell silent.

She knew exactly what she was getting herself into by asking that question, but she still had one more thing she needed to know.

“You’re not our enemy, right?”

Ren stared at her for a few seconds before chuckling.

“Come on.”

He stood up from the couch and casually stretched.

“If I were your enemy, I wouldn’t have become such good friends with you guys.”

Kiba slowly lowered his hand from his sword.

Koneko relaxed slightly, though she still looked cautious.

Rias continued watching Ren, her expression thoughtful.

Ren simply shoved his hands into his pockets.

“I’ll see you guys tomorrow.”

He turned around and began walking toward the door as though the conversation had been nothing more than a casual chat.

On his way out, he spotted Akeno returning with his tea.

“Oh, perfect.”

He grabbed the cup from her hand.

Without even checking the temperature, Ren immediately chugged the entire thing.

“Ahhhhh!”

He immediately grabbed his throat, his face twisting from the heat as he bent forward slightly.

Akeno covered her mouth while laughing softly.

The rest of the room quickly joined in.

Ren looked at all of them with an annoyed expression before simply waving his hand.

“Yeah, yeah.

Laugh it up.”

He walked out of the room while still rubbing his throat.

‘Tea got an upscale.’

Behind him, the laughter continued.
