Alpha Kingsley POV
I walked toward my study, banging the door hard in frustration.
I wasn’t one to sulk about a failed romantic session, but this one hit differently in ways I couldn’t explain or even picture why.
Maybe my wolf and I were just groaning in anger and disappointment, and the cause of it all was probably not even aware of what he did wrong.
Poor Andrew.
I breathed in heavily to calm my nerves before proceeding to sit down.
Andrew came in shortly after, a file in his hand, confusion still clearly written on his face about my earlier reaction.
He kept looking at me, trying to gauge my expression.
“Do I have flowers growing on my face?” I asked.
He looked away quickly but then returned his gaze, still curious.
“It’s nothing. I’m just curious about what you were doing… inside,” he replied, eyebrows raised as he stared at me.
I frowned at the question, my mind drifting back to what had happened earlier — the way I devoured her lips and how she moaned in pleasure when I grabbed her breasts.
“Why is your face suddenly red? Are you feeling sick or something?” he asked, bringing his hand closer to my face to feel my temperature.
I shook my head and snapped out of my filthy thoughts.
“I’m fine. Just tell me what business you have with me now,” I replied, avoiding his questioning eyes.
He exhaled in relief and dropped a file on my desk.
“I’ve combed through all the pack records, the border patrol logs, and the guards’ shifts, but I found nothing unusual or wrong,” he said as I picked up the file to review.
I didn’t think that was the only reason he had come looking for me.
I raised my brows in confusion as I flipped through the documents.
“These are just normal security records,” I said, staring at him, silently asking why the hell he interrupted me if it wasn’t something serious.
He smiled sheepishly and scratched his head.
He always did that whenever he discovered something important, felt anxious, or was confused.
He pointed at a section in the file.
“The guard who tried to escape scrutiny and ended up dead last time was constantly assigned to the West Wing of the border for patrol, as seen and reported by other guards. But there’s no record of that here. According to this file, he was assigned to guard the pack’s library.”
I narrowed my eyes.
“I would have brushed it off as a coincidence,” Andrew continued, “but a coincidence like that can’t continue for an entire month without anyone noticing such a mistake.”
”Except…” I said slowly.
“Except someone deliberately altered the records to cover something up,” Andrew finished.
“And traces of black magic were found in the West Wing of the border — the same place that guard was last seen,” I added.
The air in the room shifted slightly.
“Who’s in charge of the guards’ roster and security shifts?” I asked, turning to face him fully.
“I handle it sometimes, especially during important events or when I feel the need to review things personally. But senior warrior Darius is primarily in charge of border security and the day-to-day running of patrol and guard shifts,” he answered.
He paused, studying my face carefully.
“Why are you asking?
Do you suspect something?”
”It can’t be a coincidence that the poisoned guard was stationed in the West Wing for a month without rotation, yet recorded here as guarding the pack’s library,” I replied calmly.
“And only one person has access and authority over border security apart from you and me,” I added, leaving the rest unsaid.
The tension in the room increased.
Andrew fell silent, clearly thinking deeply.
“Are you saying Darius might have betrayed us and joined our enemies?” he asked carefully.
I slowly shook my head.
“I don’t assume or guess until I have concrete evidence,” I said firmly.
“But when I do find out there’s been betrayal…”
A low growl escaped my throat as my voice darkened and my expression hardened.
Andrew swallowed.
“Pay closer attention to the border security and our senior officials. Do not interrogate or question anyone about what we discovered. Be discreet. Observe everyone and every detail silently,” I commanded.
“Our enemies are in the dark while we are in the open. We need to change that balance and bring their pawns into the light,” I added.
“Yes, Alpha,” he bowed. Get faster updates on g.com.
I nodded, still deep in thought, my fingers tapping lightly against the desk.
“The wolf conference is in three days. You’ll be leaving in two days to arrive on time. All preparations have been completed, and I’ve selected trusted and capable guards to go with you as backup,” Andrew informed me.
“Are you sure you don’t want me to accompany you?” he asked.
“No.”
”I need you here as my eyes within the pack while I’m away,” I stated firmly.
He nodded slowly.
“And Olivia… how are you going to—”
”Olivia is coming with me to the wolf conference as my plus one,” I interrupted.
“You don’t need to worry about her.
I’ve got that covered.
Focus on the tasks I assigned to you.”
”Your wish is my command,” he bowed and turned to leave.
“Wait,” I called out.
He stopped and looked back.
“Inform Linda to prepare the Royal Consort robe for Olivia,” I said.
He blinked, clearly shocked.
“I thought you said no she-wolf was ever going to wear that robe except your—” He stopped himself, not daring to complete the sentence.
“Inform her on your way out,” I repeated coldly.
“And add more guards to her security detail.”
I didn’t answer his unspoken question.
“Understood, Alpha,” he said quietly before leaving.
The study fell silent once more.
And I remained there, staring at nothing in particular, fully aware that I had just made a decision that would change everything.
