Chapter 1: The Mating Ball.

The Alpha's Concubine Mate

Lila's POV**

You would think being the only daughter of Alpha Daxton of the Nightshade pack would grant me respect.

No.

To them, I am "The Alpha's Plague," a werewolf who has yet to transform, a source of shame. Since my wolf never emerged after coming of age, their sneers and hushed remarks follow me.

I once stood as a symbol of potential, prideful and strong, but now I am the punchline of a joke. Humiliation has become my constant companion. But tonight, a glimmer of hope sparkles in the darkness.

The mating ball is here… the night when every young werewolf anticipates finding their destined mate.

My father believes that when I find my mate, it will unlock the missing part of me, allowing my wolf to finally surface. I hold on to that hope, for it fuels my journey.

As I walk down the hall toward the grand hall, my heels click against the polished floor. The time spent preparing has been worthwhile.

My black gown flows elegantly, my hair is styled in a neat bun, with loose curls framing my face. The air is thick with energy, and despite my nerves, a spark courses through my veins.

Maybe tonight, everything will shift.

Approaching the entrance, laughter and chatter buzz around me. I hesitate for a moment, taking a deep breath. I can do this. As I step across the threshold, my eyes scan the room.

The hall is magnificent, adorned with flowers and delicate lanterns that cast warm light over gathered pack members. Everyone radiates excitement, eager to meet their mates.

And then, I hear them.

"I can't believe she showed up," one voice whispers loud enough for me to catch it. "Does she truly think anyone will claim her?"

"Who would want the Alpha's plague?" another mocks. "A wolfless werewolf? What a disgrace."

Those words sting, but I maintain my composure, standing tall despite the pain. They've said worse over the years; I've learned to mask the hurt.

Tonight is too important for them to ruin me. I walk forward, head held high, while inside, I frantically hold myself together.

"Lila!" My father's voice booms above the crowd, and I turn to him instantly. He stands at the head of the hall, tall and proud, like the center of gravity for everything around him.

"Father," I greet them with a smile, shaking off the hurt from their whispers. I approach him, and the crowd parts respectfully. "The hall looks incredible. Mom has truly outdone herself."

"She always does," he replies, his stern features softening as he gazes at me. "And you, my dear, are beautiful."

"Thank you," I say with quiet gratitude, knowing my dad will always support me. Where the pack may turn indifferent, my parents have remained steadfast.

They have done everything to protect me, but even their love can't shield me from the harsh reality of being different in a pack that values strength.

Taking our seats at the front, my heart flutters with anticipation. Soon, the ceremony will begin and I will find my mate—the one who will embrace me, even in my wolfless state. The one who will restore balance to my life.

"Are you nervous?" my father asks, his tone low as he focuses on me.

"A little," I admit, fiddling with the fabric of my dress. "What if... what if he doesn't want me?"

"Nonsense," he replies firmly. "You are the Alpha's daughter. Any man who would reject you would be a fool."

I smile at his confidence, though the fear lingers. What if meeting my mate doesn't change anything? What if I remain wolfless, an outcast in my own pack? I push those thoughts away. I must believe tonight will transform everything.

Out steps the messenger, his voice rising and echoing around the hall to announce the start of the mating ritual. Excitement ripples through me; I can feel the adrenaline surge. This is it—the moment I have been anticipating.

I rise, gently caressing my dress for the last time, scanning the room as if searching for something.

The pack members stand too, their eyes alight with anticipation. The atmosphere thickens with tension, buzzing with opportunity, futures poised to unfold.

I take a deep breath and step forward to join the ceremony. My father's words resonate in my mind: *You will know him when you see him.* My heart races, excitement fused with apprehension.

Who will he be

? What will he look like? More importantly, will he accept me?
