It was just past midnight.
Xuanxuan was sleeping beside her. Apart from the sound of the rain outside, the room was completely quiet.
Ye Xin touched her chest, relieved that it had only been a dream.
But Xuanxuan didn’t seem to be sleeping peacefully. He kept tossing and turning, occasionally grinding his teeth.
Out of habit, Ye Xin placed her palm on her son’s forehead.
It was burning hot!
Her son had a fever!
Ye Xin instantly woke up completely.
She quickly got out of bed and went looking for fever medicine. She remembered that she had brought some fever and cold medicine from home.
Holding the fever medicine, Ye Xin returned to the bed and gently woke Xuanxuan.
“Come on, son. Take some medicine. You have a fever.”
Xuanxuan opened his hazy eyes and looked at Ye Xin in confusion.
“Mom…”
Ye Xin helped him sit up and watched as he took the fever medicine.
Just as she was about to lay him back down, Xuanxuan suddenly grabbed her hand.
“Mom, I just had a strange dream.”
Ye Xin patted him reassuringly.
“It’s okay. It was only a dream. Mommy is here. I won’t let anyone hurt you.”
Xuanxuan shook his head.
“Mom, I dreamed about a big villa. You and Grandma were living there with me, and none of the zombies outside dared to come inside.”
“There were wolves there, too. One of them dragged me away.”
Ye Xin’s heart skipped a beat.
Wasn’t that exactly the dream she had just had? How could it be such a coincidence that her son had dreamed about the same thing at the same time?
“And then?” Ye Xin asked.
Xuanxuan frowned thoughtfully.
“Then Little Wolf chased after it. After that, you woke me up.”
“Mom, that dream felt so real! It was like it had actually happened before.”
Ye Xin patted her son’s body.
“Go to sleep. We’ll talk about it tomorrow.”
Since her son was sick, she couldn’t go out anymore.
Before long, Xuanxuan fell into a deep sleep. After some time, beads of sweat appeared on his forehead, and his fever finally went down.
But Ye Xin couldn’t sleep anymore.
She and Xuanxuan had dreamed about the exact same thing at the same time. What did it mean?
Or was the dream trying to warn her about something?
Based on what she had seen in the dream, that villa really was an ideal place to defend against zombies.
First, it was located in the mountains, far away from populated areas.
Second, the villa was situated at a high elevation. Even if torrential rain like this came, it wouldn’t be flooded.
As long as she established proper defenses around the perimeter, it would be more than enough to serve as her own small base.
The only question was: Where was this place?
It was somewhere she had never been before. Why had she dreamed about it so clearly?
“Ugh…”
Ye Xin rubbed her head.
Perhaps, in some unknown dimension, she was already experiencing the events from her dream!
At dawn, Ye Xin got out of bed. After washing up, she went into the kitchen to prepare breakfast.
She cooked a large pot of rice porridge, fried a plate of egg pancakes, and boiled one egg for each person. With some pickled vegetables, it made a simple breakfast.
Ye Xin’s mother took the boiled egg from Xuanxuan’s hand.
“A child with a fever shouldn’t eat eggs. Here, be good and drink some porridge. Let your mom get you a steamed bun.”
Ye Xin had no choice but to take a steamed bun out of her space for her son to eat with the plain porridge.
Actually, she still had plenty of eggs. Her father had bought them back in their hometown.
But since her mother said sick children shouldn’t eat eggs, they would just have to wait.
Right now, all Ye Xin hoped for was that the hens in her space would reproduce on their own. Only then would she have an endless supply of eggs.
After breakfast, her mother touched Xuanxuan’s forehead.
“He still seems to have a bit of a fever. Do you have any cold medicine? Give him some.”
She sighed.
“With the rain coming down this heavily, I wonder if the medicine I ordered can still be delivered.”
Ye Xin shook her head.
“Probably not. The typhoon is about to arrive, and once it does, the roads will only become more difficult to travel.”
“Mom, do you know where the supplier’s company is? If we really can’t get it delivered, we’ll have to find a way to pick it up ourselves.”
Her mother shook her head.
“I only know their office is in an office building in the eastern part of the city. Apparently, the whole building is occupied by pharmaceutical companies. I don’t know exactly which company they’re in.”
There was nothing they could do but accept the situation.
Fortunately, Ye Xin’s mother knew a little about massage therapy. After Xuanxuan took his medicine, she carefully massaged him for half an hour.
His fever finally went down again.
Ye Xin told her parents about the strange dream from the previous night.
Her father fell silent for a moment.
“I think I know this place.”
He turned to his wife.
“Meimei, do you remember the last time we went back home? Doesn’t the place Xin Xin described look like that mountain near your hometown?”
“The last time we passed by there, that villa was still being built. You even said, ‘Who would be crazy enough to build a villa deep in the mountains like that?'”
Ye Xin’s mother suddenly raised her head.
“Yes! That’s right! There was something like that!”
“I heard that the wealthy man who built the villa was from your grandmother’s village. After he became rich, all his relatives and friends came to borrow money from him. But when he later went to collect the debts, they all turned against him and pretended they didn’t know him.”
“They even accused him of being heartless and stingy, saying he was coming after them over such a small amount of money. In a fit of anger, he built that villa halfway up the mountain and said he wanted to get away from those people.”
“I heard he never actually lived in the villa. His son took him to the city instead.”
Ye Xin didn’t care where the wealthy man eventually ended up. From her parents’ conversation, she had learned two important things.
First, the place really existed.
Second, the villa was currently vacant and unoccupied.
Now that the apocalypse had arrived, did this mean that once the disaster passed, she could really go there and build her own base to defend against zombie attacks?
Just as she was thinking about it, Ye Xin’s phone rang.
It was Gu Nan.
His voice sounded weak and exhausted.
“Xin Xin, please have some mercy and bring me some food!”
“I’m in the hospital right now. The hospital cafeteria has stopped preparing food, and even the doctors and nurses are nowhere to be seen! I’m starving to death!”
Ye Xin froze.
She had known this would happen from the beginning, but she hadn’t expected it to happen so quickly!
She had assumed that the hospital wouldn’t stop functioning until after the typhoon arrived. She never expected everything to collapse on the third day of torrential rain.
Looking at the waist-deep floodwaters outside the window, she understood.
Doctors and nurses were people too. They might want to go to the hospital, but under these circumstances, they couldn’t even get there!
Ye Xin didn’t say a word. She simply hung up.
She couldn’t be bothered with him.
Gu Nan called again, and Ye Xin decisively blocked his number.
But Gu Nan refused to give up and sent her a message:
“Xin Xin, why don’t you come pick me up and take me home? I’m injured and can’t get wet. Besides, our divorce hasn’t been finalized yet. We’re still husband and wife, after all.”
Only then did Ye Xin remember.
It was true—they hadn’t officially obtained their divorce certificates yet!
So what? Even if they weren’t officially divorced, did that mean anything?
Ye Xin wasn’t someone who could be bound by a mere marriage certificate.
Besides, they had already signed the divorce agreement!
Ye Xin blocked him on WeChat as well.
This time, the world was finally quiet.
She stood up, did more than thirty push-ups, and then began practicing her punches against the punching bag.
She could let anything else fall by the wayside, but she absolutely could not neglect her training.
Neglecting her physical strength would be nothing short of courting death.
In the living room, Ye Xin’s father was teaching her mother how to box. Her mother followed every movement with great seriousness.
At that moment, Ye Xin suddenly realized that the sound of the rain outside had changed again.
