I can feel my life slipping by as I lay here next to Derricc’s lifeless body.

I swear only he could die in a situation like this with a smile on his face.

It’s sad really, twice now I’ve failed to protect him yet he seems at peace with everything.Full novel: The Apocalyptic Restaurant Road Trip — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

It makes me very happy that he could smile but it also pisses me off that he’s smiling.

My intrusive thoughts are kicking in now that I’ve somewhat calmed down.

They’re telling to slap the smile of his face, which while very tempting in this situation, wouldn’t do me any good as I’d get no response out of it.

Back to the present Ok, rant over, I’m dying now.

So unfortunately I couldn’t fully complete my revenge with Jackson so I’m going to die with that regret.

I also let a very bad (potentially the worst shot ever) be the one to kill me.

That’s embarrassing to die knowing.

I take one last look at Derricc and as I feel my last few breaths coming through, I can’t help but think back to what we’ve been through and just be happy that I get to spend my final moments with him.

“Derricc, if there’s an afterlife, let’s enjoy ourselves.

No professionalism, less violence, no zombies, no end of the world.

Just us, some booze, and all the relaxation we can afford.

Maybe you could indulge in a restaurant.

I did always want to become a chef.” My vision starts fading but after my last thoughts i feel myself relaxing and I end up smiling as well.

“Hahahaha that explains how he could die with a smile.” As I feel my couple last breaths coming, I’ve come to realize that not a single person has come around the room.

No shrieks, screams, no one crying, it’s just dead silent.

“Must be that doc’s doing trying to do damage control and isolate the room” With that thought everything goes black.

…..

…..

…..

I don’t know how long it’s been but I can feel my consciousness drifting in the void.

It’s eerily quiet, not a single other presence has been around, I think.

I start hoping it’s not the afterlife cause this is ridiculous.

I was expecting oh I don’t know, large bright gates and clouds, or hellfire and brimstone, or maybe some hunting grounds.

Anything but this seemingly endless void that seems to go on forever.

Just to distract me from my thoughts I hear a voice that seems to be like one of those omnipotent prescences that shouldn’t exist in front me but does anyways.

“Roll the dice and determine your fate.” At this point it’s just like you know what, I’m bored and i don’t know how much longer I’m gonna be here, least I got something to do for a couple minutes.

But well, I can’t find this damn dice anywhere.

“Ummmmm hello, Mr voice sir, I don’t know what to call you and I’d really hate to offend your majestic presence but I can’t find this dice you mentioned.” There could be a chance I’m just hallucinating due to boredom and could be imagining things.

“I’m not a hallucination.

Just relax your mind and focus on spreading your mind all around you.” “Hey, it’s not nice to read my thoughts like that, although I probably should’ve assumed you could” I joke back as I attempt to do what the voice says.

I guess because of what happened in my previous life and always keeping myself aware of my surroundings, I was able to do what the voice said quickly and i notice a surprising big palm sized dice not too far from me.

I also feel that I can grab this dice with my mind here like I have a hand and so i roll the dice and it lands on a 2.

“Congratulations sir, you have rolled a 2.

You now have a choice to make.

Per your last thoughts before dying you can either A: “Go to the afterlife of your dreams with one other person and live out all eternity there.” Or B “Go back in time to before the world (and I say this loosely) and redo your life with you and one other person.” “Make your choice wisel”- “B” “Sir, you don’t hav”- “B” “You’re that sur”- “B” I say a third time with some new found determination.

“Look Mr god like presence, I have the chance to see my family again and potentially save them from their fate this time.

There’s no way I’d ever give up a chance for that, i don’t care if I have to suffer through hell again.” I pause for moment, taking a deep breath.

“I don’t know who or what you are, or what kind of existence you’ve endured until now.

All I know is the regret of not being able to save my loved ones, not being strong enough to protect anyone, and my brother and I spent way too much time watching the people we love die in our arms while others who wished us harm lived.” “I have a chance for redemption, vengeance, and a chance to live a freer life.

No way could I miss out on this chance.” Thanks to you, I get a chance to have a proper family again and not the crappy nonsense I just dealt with.

The mysterious entity laughs pretty boisterously for a potential diety, but it’s oddly comical.

“Wonderful, you got the determination and the willpower to make this worthwhile.

Congratulations again for exceeding expectations.

Now, you get one more dice roll.

Good luck.” The dice reappears near me, this time, a 12 sided die.

I roll an 8.

“Erik sir, you rolled an 8.

That means I will be sending you back 8 months before the world succumbed to chaos.

Good luck in the next life.

Happy travels.” Before I could comprehend what just happened, a blinding bright light overtakes me.

As I feel my presence leaving this void, I hear a faint voice in the background “I have a present waiting for you to help you in this new life, use it well and good luck.” As I listen intently, I feel my presence land inside a chair that was surprisingly soft.

this is the last chapter of background nonsense and now the real story that everyone has been waiting for will begin in the next chapter
