Part II – The Price of Hope The closer Drake came to the eastern district, the heavier his footsteps became.

Ashhaven General Hospital had stood there for more than sixty years, surviving Dungeon Bursts, monster sieges, and countless tragedies that had shaped the city’s history.

It had never been known as a place where miracles happened.Full novel: The Beast Walker — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

It was a place where people fought desperately against fate, where hope was measured in days rather than years, and where every heartbeat was cherished because no one knew when it would become the last.

For Drake…

This hospital had become the center of his world.

Its worn walls had witnessed every promise he had ever made to Luna.

Every sleepless night.

Every desperate prayer.

Every silent tear.

As the familiar white building slowly appeared beyond the rows of old apartment complexes, Drake unconsciously slowed his pace.

Nothing about it had changed.

The faded paint still peeled from the walls.

The blue mana lamps above the entrance flickered weakly against the evening sky.

Several windows remained cracked despite repeated repairs, scars left behind by the monster attack that had reached the city nearly two years ago.

Everything looked exactly as he remembered.

Yet somehow…

He no longer felt like the same person who had walked through those doors only a few days ago.

Only three days had passed.

To the rest of the world…

Drake had simply disappeared.

To him…

It felt as though he had lived through an entirely different lifetime.

His hand slowly rested against the cloth pouch hidden beneath his jacket.

Inside it rested the Mana Crystal he had recovered from the ancient Bonefang colony.

Its faint warmth remained constant, as though reminding him that everything he had experienced inside the Dead Ruins had truly happened.

The Alpha.

The Hollow Antler Tyrant.

The relic.

The grave overlooking the forgotten colony.

None of it had been a dream.

Taking a slow breath, Drake pushed open the hospital doors.

Warm air greeted him immediately.

The sharp scent of medicine and disinfectant drifted through the reception hall while countless footsteps echoed across the polished floor.

Doctors hurried between departments carrying patient files, nurses pushed carts filled with mana stabilizers, and worried family members sat quietly along the waiting area, praying for good news.

It was noisy.

Busy.

Chaotic.

And somehow…

Comforting.

Life still existed here.

The receptionist looked up from her desk.

Her eyes widened almost instantly.

“Drake…?” Several nearby nurses turned at the sound of his name.

For a brief moment, the entire reception area became strangely quiet.

One nurse covered her mouth.

Another simply stared.

News spread quickly inside hospitals.

Especially when it concerned death.

Everyone here had believed Drake had entered the Dead Ruins and never returned.

Drake offered a tired smile.

“I guess I’m a little harder to kill than people expected.” The attempt at humor earned only relieved smiles.

One elderly nurse quietly walked around the reception desk before placing a gentle hand upon his shoulder.

“We’re glad you’re alive.” Simple words.

Yet after everything Drake had witnessed beneath the Dead Ruins, they warmed his heart far more than he expected.

He bowed politely.

“Thank you.” Without wasting another moment, he hurried toward the staircase.

Every floor brought back memories.

The first floor was filled with emergency patients brought back from recent dungeon raids.

The second housed rehabilitation wards where injured Hunters learned to walk again after losing limbs in battle.

The third belonged mostly to children suffering unstable awakenings, each room filled with hopeful parents praying their sons or daughters would survive the transformation.

Finally…

The fourth floor.

Long-term Mana Disease patients.

Unlike the lower levels, silence dominated this hallway.

No hurried footsteps.

No loud conversations.

Only the quiet hum of mana stabilizers echoed behind closed doors.

Many of the patients here had spent months sleeping.

Some…

Years.

Families visited less frequently as time passed.

Hope slowly became routine.

Routine slowly became acceptance.

Acceptance slowly became loneliness.

Drake hated this floor more than any place in the city.

Because it reminded him how easily people could be forgotten.

His footsteps finally stopped before Room 417.

The familiar wooden door stood exactly where it always had.

Someone had placed fresh white lilies beside the window.

Luna’s favorite flower.

Drake reached toward the doorknob.

His hand stopped halfway.

For the first time since entering the Dead Ruins…

He was afraid.

He had stood before an Alpha Monster.

He had faced the Hollow Antler Tyrant.

He had watched death itself walk through the Bonefang colony.

Yet opening this simple wooden door terrified him more than any monster ever could.

What if he had returned too late?

What if Doctor Ellis could no longer keep his promise?

What if…

Drake closed his eyes.

“No.” He whispered quietly.

“Luna’s still waiting.” Slowly…

He opened the door.

Moonlight poured softly through the large window overlooking the eastern district.

The room remained exactly as he remembered.

A bookshelf filled with borrowed novels rested against one wall.

Several potted flowers sat upon the windowsill.

Most had withered.

One remained alive.

Beside the hospital bed, the familiar mana stabilizer emitted its steady rhythmic pulse.

And there…

Lay Luna.

She looked peaceful.

Almost too peaceful.

Her long silver hair spread gently across the pillow while her pale face remained completely relaxed.

Without the mana stabilizer quietly working beside her…

She could easily have been mistaken for someone simply sleeping after a long day.

Drake slowly approached the bedside.

Every step felt impossibly heavy.

When he finally reached her, he carefully took her hand into his own.

Still warm.

Still alive.

A wave of relief swept through him.

His shoulders relaxed for the first time in days.

“I made it back.” His voice barely rose above a whisper.

“I’m sorry…” “I told you I’d come back before sunset.” A faint smile appeared on his face.

“I was only…” He laughed softly.

“…three days late.” Silence answered him.

Only the quiet pulse of the mana stabilizer filled the room.

Drake gently brushed a loose strand of silver hair away from Luna’s face.

“You wouldn’t believe what happened.” “I met monsters…” “…real monsters.” “And somehow…” “They were kinder than the humans chasing me.” His eyes slowly drifted toward the window.

“I think…” “I understand the world a little better now.” He remained seated beside her bed for several long minutes.

Simply listening to her breathing.

Listening to the silence.

After everything that had happened beneath the Dead Ruins…

This silence felt sacred.

A gentle knock echoed from behind him.

Drake turned.

Doctor Ellis stood quietly in the doorway.

The elderly physician smiled faintly as their eyes met.

“You came back.” Drake slowly stood.

“I promised her I would.” Doctor Ellis entered the room and quietly closed the door behind him.

For several moments…

Neither man spoke.

Sometimes…

Silence carried far more meaning than words ever could.

The old doctor studied Drake carefully.

Something had changed.

Not merely his appearance.

His posture had become steadier.

His eyes no longer carried hopelessness.

Instead…

They burned with quiet determination.

The determination of someone who had looked directly at death…

And refused to surrender.

Doctor Ellis folded his hands behind his back.

“Tell me, Drake…” “What exactly happened to you?” To be continued…
