The Little Things The hotel had finally settled into its usual rhythm.
The chaos from the burst pipe had become nothing more than another story the staff exchanged over lunch.
Guests walked through the grand lobby with smiles on their faces, the sound of rolling suitcases blending with soft piano music.
Business was returning to normal.
Inside Ethan’s office, however…
Someone was asleep.
Ava sat at her desk with her chin resting on one hand.
Her laptop was open.
Several files were neatly stacked beside her.
Unfortunately…
So was her head.
She had unknowingly fallen asleep while reading reports.
Ethan looked up from his desk.
He couldn’t help smiling.
“…Unbelievable.” She had somehow managed to fall asleep sitting upright.
A loose strand of hair rested across her cheek, gently moving each time she breathed.
For a moment…
He simply watched her.
Peaceful.
Comfortable.
Cute.
He quietly stood and walked over.
Carefully, he lifted his suit jacket from his shoulders and draped it over hers.
She stirred slightly.
“…Mmm…” But she didn’t wake.
Ethan smiled to himself before returning to his desk.
Twenty minutes later…
A soft knock interrupted the silence.
Lucas walked in carrying two cups of coffee.
“Morning.” He stopped mid-step.
His eyes landed on the sleeping Ava.
Then on Ethan.
Then on the jacket covering her.
Lucas slowly looked back at his brother.
“…Seriously?” Ethan continued signing documents.
“What?” “You’ve reached the jacket stage?” “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Lucas burst into laughter.
“I leave you alone for one morning and you’re acting like the male lead in a romance novel.” “Lower your voice.” “You don’t want Sleeping Beauty to wake up?” “Lucas.” “I’m just saying…” He leaned closer.
“…You’re whipped.” Ethan sighed.
“I preferred you when you were quiet.” “I’ve never been quiet.” “Unfortunately.” Lucas was still laughing when Ava suddenly shifted.
Her eyes fluttered open.
She blinked once.
Twice.
Then looked down.
A black suit jacket rested neatly over her shoulders.
She turned toward Ethan.
“…Mr.
Hawthorne?” Without looking up from his paperwork, he simply replied, “You looked cold.” Ava touched the jacket.
“…Thank you.” Lucas immediately looked away to hide his grin.
He absolutely wasn’t hiding it well.
— Around noon…
Grace Bennett, the hotel’s executive assistant, appeared at the office door.
She smiled warmly at Ava.
“Lunch?” Ava smiled back.
“I’ll be there in a minute.” Grace nodded before leaving.
As Ava stood, Ethan spoke.
“Wait.” She turned around.
“Hm?” He opened one of the drawers in his desk and placed something on top.
A small yogurt.
A bottle of orange juice.
And a neatly wrapped chicken sandwich.
Ava stared at him.
“…What’s this?” “You skipped breakfast.” “I did not.” “You ate half a slice of toast.” “…” “You pushed the eggs around your plate.” “…” “And you gave your fruit to Lucas.” Lucas, who had returned at some point, raised his hand proudly.
“It was delicious.” Ava’s mouth slowly fell open.
“You…” “You noticed all of that?” Ethan looked genuinely confused.
“I thought it was obvious.” “It wasn’t.” He gently pushed the food toward her.
“Eat.” She looked at him for a long moment.
No one…
Not even her father…
Had ever noticed such tiny things about her.
Something warm settled quietly inside her chest.
“…Thank you.” This time…
She smiled without forcing it.
And Ethan noticed.
— That evening…
The rooftop garden was bathed in shades of orange and gold.
Ava stepped outside to get some fresh air.
She didn’t expect anyone else to be there.
But someone was.
Ethan stood near the railing, his hands tucked into his pockets as he watched the setting sun.
He didn’t hear her approach.
“You really like sunsets.” He glanced back.
“I do.” She walked over until they stood side by side.
For several moments…
Neither of them spoke.
The silence felt strangely comfortable.
Finally, Ava asked, “Why?” Ethan looked toward the horizon.
“When I was little…” “My grandfather used to bring me here.” “He always said sunsets remind us that no matter how difficult today was…” “…tomorrow always comes.” Ava quietly listened.
“I guess…” “They make me hopeful.” She smiled softly.
“I’ve never thought about them that way.” “And you?” She looked at the glowing sky.
“I always thought sunsets were sad.” “They remind me that another day is over.” Ethan turned toward her.
“Maybe.” “But they’re also proof…” “…that the sun always comes back.” Ava looked at him.
Something about those words stayed with her.
Neither of them realized it.
But at that very moment…
The distance between them became just a little smaller.
Above them, the sky slowly faded into evening.
And somewhere between the golden light…
And the quiet they shared…
Love continued to grow in the little things.
