Chapter 17

THE CEO'S SECRET TWINS

*Chapter 17: New York*

Moving trucks.

8 of them.

Parked in front of a tiny London bedsit at 6 AM.

Neighbors watched from windows.

Aiden watched from the doorway, arms crossed.

Aria watched from Jane’s shoulders, waving at everything.

“Are we really doing this?” Grandma asked, holding a box of tea.

Jane looked at the address on the paper in her hand.

*247 West 89th Street. Upper West Side.*

And below it, in Ryan’s handwriting: _Home._

“Yeah,” Jane said. “We’re doing this.”

*12 Hours Later - The Brownstone*

It wasn’t a house. It was a brownstone. 4 floors. Brick.

Garden in the back. Swing set already installed.

A key on the counter with a note:

_The code is 0514. -R_

March 14th.

Jane didn’t cry. Not until the twins were asleep.

The first night was quiet. Too quiet.

No laundromat sounds. No sirens.

Just Button scratching at the back door.

Because yes. There was a dog.

Ryan dropped him off the second day.

“Rescue,” he said, awkward. “Aria said she wanted one. His name is Button. He’s 2. House trained. Mostly.”

Button immediately became Aria’s best friend.

Aiden pretended not to care. Then slept with Button on night 3.

*Week 1 - The Adjustment*

*School*: Private. 10 minutes away. Uniforms.

Aiden hated the blazer. Wore it anyway.

Aria made 3 friends on day one and invited them all for a playdate.

*Work*: Jane’s desk was in Sterling Tower. Remote 3 days a week.

Head of Design, Sterling Women’s. $400k.

Her first meeting: 12 people. All of them staring at “the CEO’s baby mama.”

She presented her capsule line anyway. They clapped.

*Ryan*: He showed up for dinner 4 nights that week.

No suits. Jeans. Cooking badly.

Burned pasta. Ordered pizza. Let the twins “help.”

He learned that Aiden hates peas and Aria tells stories to Button.

He also learned to braid hair. From YouTube. At 2 AM.

*Week 2 - The First Fight*

It happened on a Thursday.

Ryan came home early. “Family dinner” night.

He walked in to find Jane on the phone. Arguing.

“No, I don’t need a nanny,” Jane said. “I have Grandma. I have me.”

She hung up. Saw Ryan.

“That was Mira,” Jane said. “She hired a nanny. Without asking me.”

Ryan set his keys down. “I thought it would help. With work—”

“I don’t need help,” Jane cut him off. “I’ve been doing this alone for 5 years.”

“I know,” Ryan said. “And I’m sorry. But you don’t have to do it alone anymore.”

“I do if you make decisions for me!” Jane snapped.

The twins went silent at the table.

Button hid under the couch.

Ryan took a breath. “You’re right. I’m sorry. No more nannies unless you say so.”

Jane stared at him. Waiting for the other shoe.

It didn’t drop.

“Okay,” she said finally. “Dinner?”

Ryan nodded. Burned the pasta again.

*Week 3 - The Routine*

Mornings: Ryan did drop-off. In a baseball cap. No security.

He learned every teacher’s name.

Aiden started calling him “Dad” at school. Not at home. But at school.

Afternoons: Jane picked up. Then design meetings.

The twins did homework at her office. Sterling employees brought them snacks.

Evenings: Dinner. Bath. Stories.

Ryan read. Badly. Aria corrected him.

Aiden asked questions about space. Ryan googled the answers.

Nights: Jane and Ryan on the back steps. Coffee. No talking.

Just sitting.

Sometimes their shoulders touched.

*The One Month Mark*

Exactly 30 days since “yes.”

Ryan came home with two things.

1. A framed photo. The four of them + Button at the park.

2. A press release. Unsigned.

“Tomorrow,” Ryan said, setting it on the table. “We go public. Unless you say no.”

Jane read it.

_Ryan Sterling and Jane Miller announce co-parenting of twins Aiden and Aria Sterling._

_The family requests privacy as they navigate this new chapter._

No lies. No spin.

“Okay,” Jane said. “Let’s do it.”

Ryan exhaled. “Thank you.”

That night, after the kids were asleep, Ryan didn’t go to the guest room.

He stayed on the couch.

And at 3 AM, Jane found him there. Asleep. With Button’s head on his lap.

She covered him with a blanket and didn’t wake him.

*Morning - The Headlines*

By 8 AM it was everywhere.

*BILLIONAIRE HAS SECRET TWINS*

*WHO IS JANE MILLER?*

*STERLING HEIRS REVEALED*

Comments: 80% “cute family.” 20% “who is she.”

Victoria Carter called 6 times. Jane blocked her.

Thomas Carter texted: _You always were a gold digger._

Jane deleted it.

Aiden saw a headline at school.

Came home and asked: “Are we famous now?”

“No,” Jane said. “We’re just us. With a louder last name.”

Aria: “Does famous come with cake?”

Ryan: “Yes. It comes with cake.”

*That Night - The Steps Again*

Coffee. Cold.

Ryan and Jane. No kids. No Button.

“I’m scared,” Jane admitted.

“Me too,” Ryan said.

“I’m scared you’ll change your mind. That this is too much.”

“I’m scared I’ll mess it up,” Ryan said. “That I’m 5 years late and I don’t know how to be a dad.”

Jane looked at him. Tired. Honest. Not a CEO.

“You’re trying,” she said. “That’s more than most.”

Ryan nodded.

For a second, he reached for her hand. Stopped.

Pulled back.

“Goodnight, Jane.”

“Goodnight, Ryan.”

Inside, the house was full. Loud. Messy.

And for the first time in 5 years, it felt like home.
