*Chapter 18: The Name*
New York in October smells like coffee, wet leaves, and money.
It’s been 1 month since the move.
1 month since Jane said “yes.”
1 month since Ryan Sterling became “Dad.”
The brownstone in the Upper West Side had a garden. Just like the photo.
There was also a dog.
A rescue. Golden retriever mix. Named *Button*. Because Aria said so.
Life was... loud. And full. And terrifying.
*8:00 AM - The Brownstone Kitchen*
Chaos.
Aria was singing and spilling cereal.
Aiden was reading the back of the cereal box. Serious.
Button was eating a sock.
Grandma was yelling in the background.
Jane was trying to find two matching shoes.
Ryan walked in in a suit. Already on his phone.
“Board meeting at 9,” he said. Then he saw the sock. “Button. Drop it.”
Button dropped it.
Ryan crouched and kissed Aria’s head. Then Aiden’s.
“Morning, team.”
Aiden looked up. “We have that thing today.”
“The thing,” Ryan said, and his whole face softened. “I know.”
Jane stopped looking for shoes.
Today.
The courthouse.
The name change.
*10:30 AM - Family Court, Manhattan*
Cold room. Wood benches.
Jane sat between Ryan and Grandma.
Aiden and Aria were drawing on legal pads.
The judge was a woman in her 60s with glasses and no patience.
“This is a petition to change the minors’ last names from Miller to Sterling,” she said. “Objections?”
“No objections, Your Honor,” Ryan’s lawyer said.
The judge looked at Jane. “Ms. Miller. You understand this is permanent?”
Jane’s throat was dry. “Yes, Your Honor.”
“And you consent?”
Jane looked at Aiden. He gave a tiny nod.
At Aria. She was drawing a heart. _Dad + Mom + Me_
“Yes,” Jane said. “I consent.”
The judge stamped the paper.
“It is so ordered. Aiden James Sterling. Aria Rose Sterling.”
The gavel hit.
And just like that, it was done.
Outside the courtroom, Ryan didn’t say anything.
He just knelt down.
“Hey,” he said to both of them. “How do you feel about having a new last name?”
Aria thought about it. “Does it come with cake?”
Ryan laughed. The first real laugh Jane had heard from him.
“Yeah. It comes with cake.”
Aiden walked up to Ryan and took his hand.
Didn’t say anything. Just held it.
Jane watched them and had to blink hard.
*6:00 PM - The Brownstone*
Cake. Ice cream. Balloons that said _Welcome to the family_.
Bella flew in from London. She was drunk and crying and taking pictures.
Grandma made jollof rice because “these kids need to remember where they came from.”
Button had cake too.
Ryan stood in the kitchen watching it all.
His penthouse was 30 blocks away and empty. He hadn’t been there in 3 weeks.
Jane came up next to him.
“You okay?” she asked.
“No,” Ryan said honestly. “I’m overwhelmed.”
Jane nodded. “Me too.”
They stood in silence while Aria tried to teach Button to sit and Aiden explained the solar system to Bella.
“Thank you,” Ryan said quietly. “For saying yes. For letting me in.”
Jane looked at him. “We’re not a family yet. We’re... trying.”
“I know,” Ryan said. “But we’re trying together.”
*11:00 PM - After Everyone Left*
The house was quiet.
Toys everywhere. Cake crumbs.
Jane was picking up when Ryan came downstairs in sweatpants. No tie. No CEO.
“You didn’t have to stay,” Jane said.
“I want to,” Ryan said. “If that’s okay.”
Jane nodded. Pointed to the guest room.
Ryan paused in the hallway. “Jane.”
“Yeah?”
“I filed something else today,” he said. “At the courthouse. After the name change.”
Jane went still. “What?”
“A restraining order,” Ryan said. “Against Victoria and Chloe Carter. And your father.”
He held up a copy. “They can’t come within 500 feet of you or the kids. Anywhere in the US. Ever.”
Jane stared at the paper.
5 years of running. And he ended it with one signature.
“Why?” she whispered.
“Because no one hurts you again,” Ryan said. “Not while I’m breathing.”
He went to the guest room and closed the door.
Jane stood in the kitchen for a long time.
Then she picked up Aiden’s drawing from the table.
_Sterling Family_
Stick figures. 4 of them. And a dog.
She put it on the fridge.
*Meanwhile - London*
Victoria Carter saw the press release on her phone at 11:03 PM.
*BILLIONAIRE CEO RYAN STERLING ACKNOWLEDGES TWINS WITH FORMER DESIGNER JANE MILLER*
She threw her wine glass at the wall.
“Jane Carter,” she hissed. “You ungrateful little—”
Her phone rang. Unknown number.
She answered.
“Mrs. Carter,” a man’s voice said. “This is Sterling Legal. You are hereby served.”
Victoria dropped the phone.
