Chapter 19: The Gala*

THE CEO'S SECRET TWINS

The invitation came on black cardstock.

Gold letters.

*STERLING CORP ANNUAL GALA*

_Honoring 30 Years of Innovation_

Jane stared at it for 10 minutes.

Then called Ryan.

“Do I have to go?”

“No,” Ryan said. “But I want you to. All of you.”

“So the whole world can take pictures?”

“So the whole world can see my family,” Ryan said quietly. “Please.”

*Two Weeks Later - 5:00 PM - The Brownstone*

Chaos in couture.

Aria: spinning in a tiny silver dress. “Do I look like a princess?”

Aiden: in a mini tux. Arms crossed. “Do I have to smile?”

Grandma: steaming Jane’s dress. “Stand still, girl.”

Bella: doing Jane’s makeup and crying. “You look like money, bestie.”

Button: wearing a bow tie. Looking very done.

Jane’s dress was navy. Simple. No logo.

Ryan picked it. “You don’t need to be flashy,” he’d said. “You just need to be you.”

At 6:45, the doorbell rang.

A black car. And Ryan.

In a tux. No tie. Hair still a little messy.

He walked in and stopped.

Looked at Jane. Then the twins.

“Wow,” he said. That was it.

Aria ran and grabbed his hand. “Dad, are there gonna be cupcakes?”

Ryan crouched down. “There will be cupcakes. And speeches. And cameras.”

Aiden looked up at him. “Are people gonna be mean?”

Ryan’s face went hard. Then soft.

“No. Not while I’m with you.”

*7:30 PM - The Metropolitan Museum*

White lights. Red carpet.

400 people. Phones out.

The second Ryan’s car door opened, the flashes started.

_“MR. STERLING!”_

_“WHO ARE THE KIDS?”_

_“MS. MILLER, LOOK HERE!”_

Ryan got out first.

Then he reached back in and took Aria’s hand.

Then Aiden’s.

Then Jane’s.

Four of them. Walking in together.

The noise got louder.

Jane wanted to disappear.

Aiden squeezed Ryan’s hand.

Ryan squeezed back.

Inside: chandeliers. Champagne. CEOs.

Everyone was watching.

Whispers: _“That’s her.” “Those are the twins.” “He looks just like the boy.”_

Ryan didn’t let go of anyone’s hand.

*8:15 PM - The Speech*

The lights dimmed.

Ryan walked to the podium. Alone.

“Good evening,” he said. His voice was steady.

“30 years ago my father started this company in a garage. He taught me that business is about people. About family.”

He paused. Looked down.

“5 years ago I made a mistake. I wasn’t there. I wasn’t present. And because of that, I missed the two most important people in my life.”

A murmur went through the room.

Cameras clicked.

“Today,” Ryan said, “I’m not here as a CEO. I’m here as a father.

These are my children. Aiden and Aria Sterling.

And this is their mother. Jane Miller.”

He looked straight at them. In the front row.

Jane felt her chest crack open.

“I’m late,” Ryan said. “But I’m here now. And I’m not going anywhere.”

He stepped down.

No applause at first.

Then it started. Slow. Then loud.

*9:00 PM - The Room*

After that, everything changed.

People came up. Not to Ryan. To Jane.

“Your designs are beautiful.”

“Aiden, you have your dad’s eyes.”

“Aria, I love your dress.”

Aria got 3 cupcakes.

Aiden talked to an 80-year-old investor about space for 20 minutes.

Button’s bow tie got 4 compliments.

Jane stood by the bar, trying to breathe.

A woman in diamonds came up. “You must be so proud.”

“I am,” Jane said. And meant it.

Then Chloe Carter appeared.

In red. With her mother.

Victoria saw Jane and stopped walking.

Chloe smiled. Fake. “Jane. What a... surprise.”

The room went quiet around them.

Ryan appeared instantly. At Jane’s side.

“Mrs. Carter. Chloe. This is a private event.”

Victoria looked at the twins. “So it’s true.”

“Yes,” Ryan said. “It is.”

Chloe looked at Jane. “You planned this, didn’t you?”

Jane met her eyes. “No. I ran. For 5 years.”

Security was already there.

“Please leave,” Ryan said. Quiet. Final.

Victoria opened her mouth.

Ryan held up his phone. “Restraining order. Want me to call the police?”

They left.

*11:00 PM - The Car Ride Home*

No one talked for 10 minutes.

Then Aria: “The cupcakes were good.”

Aiden: “That man asked me about Mars.”

Jane: “I’m exhausted.”

Ryan: “Me too.”

He reached over. Took Jane’s hand.

Didn’t let go the whole ride.

At the brownstone, he carried a sleeping Aria inside.

Aiden walked next to him, holding his jacket.

Upstairs, after bedtime, Jane found Ryan on the back steps.

Still in his tux. Tie gone.

“You did good today,” Jane said.

“So did you,” Ryan said.

Silence.

Then Ryan turned to her.

“Jane. I’m in love with you.”

Jane froze.

“Not because of the twins,” Ryan rushed. “Because of you. Because of how strong you are. How you raised them. How you looked at me tonight like I wasn’t a monster.”

Jane’s eyes filled. “Ryan...”

“I’m not asking for anything,” Ryan said. “I just needed you to know. After 5 years of not saying it.”

Jane didn’t answer.

She just leaned her head on his shoulder.

Inside, Button barked once.

And the house felt full.
