THE COLDEST DEMON GOD
An Unwanted Hero's Ascension
Volume 1 — Summoning & Rejection
Chapter 6 — The First Blessing
Golden light rose around Kanzaki Daiki. Not violently. Not like fire. It climbed from the invisible floor in thin strands, circling his legs, waist, chest and shoulders before spreading outward into a geometric sphere. Daiki stood at its centre.
His jaw tightened.
“Don't move,” Chronies said.
Daiki looked at her.
“Is it dangerous?”
“No.”
A brief pause.
“Provided the integration remains stable.”
Junpei stared at her.
“That second sentence really didn't help.”
Mika elbowed him.
“Quiet.”
“I was just saying—”
“Quiet.”
Junpei actually listened. Renjiro did not look at either of them. His attention remained fixed on Daiki. More precisely— on everything around Daiki. The golden circle beneath his feet contained twelve outer symbols.
Eight inner. Three rotating rings. A central pattern Renjiro had initially assumed was decorative. It wasn't. The innermost ring moved first.
Clockwise. The second rotated counterclockwise. The third remained stationary. Then— a pulse travelled upward. Renjiro counted.
One. Two. Three. The golden strand connected to Daiki's chest brightened. Four.
Five. A translucent panel appeared above him.
SOUL COMPATIBILITY ANALYSIS
Several students gasped. Junpei leaned forward.
“Holy…”
Renjiro ignored the reaction. The visible panel mattered less than the sequence producing it. The connection opened. Authentication. Validation.
Compatibility scan. Exactly as he had seen at the end of Chronies' explanation. But now the process continued far enough for him to observe what came next. A stream of symbols moved through the golden strand. Thousands.
Too fast to read individually. Renjiro did not try. He watched repetition instead. Input. Response.
Adjustment. Another response. At first it resembled negotiation. No. Not negotiation.
Reconciliation. The System was comparing Daiki's existing structure against multiple possible patterns. Templates. Several of them. Renjiro's gaze sharpened.
Classes. It was not assigning one at random. It was testing compatibility. Reject. Reject.
Partial match. Reject. High match. The sequence stopped. The sphere surrounding Daiki flashed.
A second panel appeared.
COMPATIBILITY CONFIRMED
CLASS: HOLY HERO
Silence. Then—
“What?!”
Junpei nearly shouted. Several students spoke at once.
“Holy Hero?!”
“Seriously?!”
“Kanzaki got Hero?!”
“That's S-rank stuff, right?!”
“Wait, ranks exist?”
“Of course ranks exist!”
“How would you know?!”
“Games!”
“That doesn't count!”
Daiki himself stared at the words. For the first time since arriving in the white space, genuine disbelief crossed his face.
“Holy… Hero?”
Chronies nodded.
“Yes.”
Golden light gathered around her fingers.
“Your compatibility with Light is exceptionally high. Your physical potential, mental structure and natural tendency toward leadership have also influenced the result.”
Daiki looked at his hands. Renjiro watched his expression. Surprise. Then uncertainty. Then— relief.
Daiki had spent the last several minutes unable to do anything. Unable to protect anyone. Unable to control where they were going. Now someone had just told him he possessed exceptional potential. Renjiro understood why that mattered to him.
“Does that mean I can protect everyone?” Daiki asked.
Chronies' expression changed slightly.
“A Class is capability, Kanzaki Daiki.”
She looked directly at him.
“What you do with that capability remains your choice.”
Daiki was silent. Then he nodded.
“I understand.”
Renjiro watched him for another second. He probably meant it. For now. The golden structure changed again. Renjiro's attention immediately returned to it.
The Class had been selected. But the connection remained open. Why? Another process began.
BLESSING COMPATIBILITY
There. Renjiro's breathing slowed. The trusted route widened. Only slightly. The first stage had mostly read.
This one required a deeper change. Chronies lifted one hand.
“Your Class establishes the foundation of your growth. A Blessing is different.”
Daiki looked up.
“Different how?”
“It is additional protection.”
Chronies' eyes briefly moved across the other students.
“You were forced into circumstances you did not choose. I cannot return you safely to Earth, but I can reduce the chance that Asteria kills you before you have any opportunity to decide what your lives there will become.”
Nobody joked this time. Renjiro watched her. Not reward. Compensation. Useful distinction.
The golden System pulsed. Then—
BLESSING INTEGRATED
Light burst around Daiki. Several students shielded their eyes. Renjiro did not. His pupils contracted. The light passed through Daiki's body.
No visible injury. No rejection. No instability. Then the panel changed.
KANZAKI DAIKI
CLASS: HOLY HERO
RANK: S
AFFINITY: LIGHT
BLESSING: INTEGRATED
Daiki inhaled sharply. His posture shifted. Barely. But Renjiro noticed. The muscles in his shoulders relaxed.
His breathing deepened. A faint golden glow disappeared beneath his skin. Something inside his body had changed. Not cosmetic. Real.
“Whoa…”
Junpei stared.
“Daiki, you look…”
Daiki turned.
“What?”
Junpei squinted.
“Shinier.”
Mika slapped the back of Junpei's head. PAK!
“Ow!”
“Stop describing people like game items!”
“I meant literally!”
Chronies lowered her hand.
“Integration complete.”
The geometric sphere vanished. Daiki remained standing. Normal. At least visually.
“How do you feel?” Shizuka asked immediately.
Daiki opened and closed his hand.
“Good.”
He paused.
“Actually…”
He took a breath.
“Really good.”
Shizuka looked toward Chronies.
“Are there side effects?”
“Not from a successful integration.”
“And unsuccessful?”
Chronies was quiet for half a second.
“I will not allow the process to reach that point.”
Shizuka did not look fully satisfied. Renjiro understood why. But he also noticed the wording. Chronies could interrupt an incompatible integration before failure. Meaning the process contained some form of rollback or recovery.
Another piece. Useful. Very useful.
✦ ✦ ✦
“Kanzaki Daiki. Step outside the circle.”
Daiki obeyed. The moment he crossed the boundary, the remaining golden lines dissolved. Renjiro reconstructed the sequence in his head. Initial connection. Identity verification.
Soul read. Compatibility mapping. Template comparison. Class selection. Permission elevation.
Class insertion. Verification. Blessing analysis. Second elevation. Blessing insertion.
Reconciliation. Final verification. Close. More stages than he could prove from one sample. Possibly several hidden beneath the visible sequence.
One complete cycle was not enough. But now he knew what to watch.
“Tachibana Akari.”
Akari froze.
“Me?”
Chronies nodded. Akari glanced toward Shizuka. Shizuka gave her a reassuring nod.
“It's alright, Tachibana-san.”
Akari swallowed. Then stepped forward. The circle appeared beneath her feet. Renjiro shifted his gaze. Second sample.
Good. The process began. Authentication. Same. Validation.
Same. Compatibility scan. Different. The structure branched much earlier. Several pathways appeared simultaneously.
Water. Light. Something Renjiro could not identify. Then— one branch overwhelmed the others. White-gold light filled the circle.
COMPATIBILITY CONFIRMED
CLASS: SAINTESS
Junpei's mouth fell open.
“Another S-rank?”
Chronies looked toward him.
“I have not displayed the rank yet.”
Junpei slowly closed his mouth.
“…Sorry.”
The panel changed.
RANK: S
Junpei pointed at it.
“I knew it.”
Mika grabbed his finger and pushed it down.
“Stop.”
Akari stared at the panel.
“Saintess…”
Chronies smiled faintly.
“Your affinity toward Holy and Healing is extremely strong.”
Akari looked uncertain.
“Does that mean… I can heal people?”
“With training.”
Akari's eyes moved toward her classmates. The fear in her expression did not disappear. But something changed. Purpose. Renjiro noticed it.
Akari had always been like that. Given an ability to help someone, her first question was how to use it. Predictable. The Blessing stage began. Renjiro stopped following the conversation.
Second cycle. The trusted route opened again. Same authentication signature. Same administrative origin. Different target.
Different compatibility payload. Important. The authority belonged to the process. Not the recipient. His eyes narrowed.
That changed things. The System had not granted Daiki privilege over himself. Chronies' integration routine had been granted permission to modify Daiki. Now the same routine was modifying Akari. Same trusted authority.
Different target. A service process. Not literally. But functionally close. Chronies authenticated the workflow.
The workflow then received temporary authority over whichever soul profile had been selected. Cleaner than granting permissions individually. And potentially more useful to observe. If someone could understand the workflow at the correct stage— Renjiro stopped the thought.
Too early. Observe. Akari's integration completed.
TACHIBANA AKARI
CLASS: SAINTESS
RANK: S
AFFINITY: HOLY • HEALING
BLESSING: INTEGRATED
White light flowed around her. Akari closed her eyes. A moment later, the light vanished. She opened them again.
“Done?” she asked.
Chronies nodded.
“Done.”
Akari exhaled. Then immediately returned to Shizuka's side. Renjiro almost found that amusing. Almost.
✦ ✦ ✦
“Akiyama Ryusei.”
Ryusei stepped forward. His integration was faster. Fire. Physical enhancement. Close-range combat.
A warrior-type template dominated quickly.
CLASS: FLAME WARRIOR
RANK: A+
AFFINITY: FIRE
Renjiro watched every stage. Third sample. Same trusted route. Minor timing difference. Same authority escalation.
Same verification structure. Good. Then another student. And another. Chronies did not rush.
Each integration took between less than a minute and several minutes depending on compatibility complexity. Some students received obvious combat Classes. Others support Classes. Some magical. Some physical.
Every result created a new wave of reactions. Excitement. Fear. Relief. Jealousy.
Questions. Renjiro cared about none of those. Not yet. He watched the machine beneath the miracle. The more he observed, the more one thing became obvious.
Whatever magic was, it still followed rules. Inputs. Outputs. Permissions. Dependencies.
Checks. Failure states. Structure. Anything with structure could be studied. Understanding it was another matter.
Manipulating it was further still. Renjiro kept those distinctions separate. That was how you avoided destroying a system you did not understand. Or yourself.
“Kurosawa Mika.”
Mika walked into the circle. She tried to look casual. Her clenched fist disagreed. Junpei cupped his hands around his mouth.
“Don't get something lame!”
Mika turned her head.
“I swear I'll test whatever I get on you first.”
“Encouragement withdrawn.”
The circle activated. Lightning appeared almost immediately. Not metaphorical light. Actual electricity. Blue-white arcs crawled across the golden structure.
Mika's eyes widened.
“Oh.”
Junpei stared.
“Oh, that's cool.”
Chronies raised her hand. The Class appeared.
CLASS: THUNDER LANCER
RANK: A+
AFFINITY: LIGHTNING
Mika's fear disappeared for approximately three seconds.
“That is cool.”
Junpei pointed accusingly.
“You can't agree after threatening me!”
“I can do whatever I want.”
The Blessing stage followed. Renjiro observed. A variation appeared during the physical adaptation phase. Lightning affinity required an additional stabilization layer around the nervous system. Interesting.
The System was not merely attaching labels. It was modifying biological and soul-level compatibility together. Which meant— Renjiro's gaze became sharper. the body itself could be altered. Not merely strengthened.
Altered. He stored that thought. Mika's integration finished. She stepped out. Tiny sparks jumped between her fingers.
Her eyes widened. Junpei immediately backed away.
“Mika.”
“What?”
“Remember our years of friendship.”
“We're not friends.”
“That makes this worse!”
She grinned. The sparks vanished. For the first time since arriving, Mika looked genuinely excited. Renjiro looked away.
✦ ✦ ✦
“Okada Junpei.”
Junpei pointed at himself.
“My time has come.”
Mika groaned.
“Please give him Commoner.”
“That's not even a combat Class!”
“Exactly.”
Junpei entered the circle dramatically. Chronies stared at him.
“Please stand normally.”
“…Right.”
He straightened. Renjiro watched. Junpei's compatibility scan branched across physical coordination, reach, balance, timing, reaction speed and spatial awareness. Several weapon templates appeared. Sword.
Staff. Polearm. Spear. The final branch stabilized almost immediately.
CLASS: SPEARMAN
RANK: A+
AFFINITY: PHYSICAL
Junpei stared. Mika stared. Junpei slowly looked at her.
“Spear.”
Mika looked at her own status display. Then back at him.
“Don't make this weird.”
“We're both pointy-weapon people now.”
“I said don't make it weird.”
“Battle partners?”
“Try saying that again and I'll demonstrate the difference between a spear and a lightning lance on you.”
Junpei nodded solemnly.
“Understood.”
Two seconds passed.
“Still cool, though.”
Mika's eyebrow twitched. Chronies continued the integration before the argument could develop. Renjiro watched. The pattern had become clearer. Every Class write opened a trusted route for approximately the same structural interval.
The exact duration changed. The order did not. Authenticate. Map. Open.
Write. Verify. Reconcile. Close. The Blessing stage opened a similar route again.
Thirty students. One teacher. Potentially dozens of observation windows. More than enough to learn patterns. Not enough to justify reckless action.
Entering was not the difficult part anyway. Leaving without damage— and without creating something the System rejected— would be. He needed more.
✦ ✦ ✦
“Shirakawa Reina.”
Reina stepped forward. Her expression remained calm. She passed Renjiro on the way. Their eyes met for less than a second. She stopped.
“Kurogane-kun.”
“What?”
“You've been staring at those circles for a long time.”
Renjiro looked at her.
“So have you.”
“I've been watching the Classes.”
“I haven't.”
A pause. Reina's gaze sharpened slightly.
“What have you been watching?”
“The process.”
Before she could ask more, Chronies called again.
“Shirakawa Reina.”
Reina looked forward. Then back at Renjiro once.
“Interesting.”
She entered the circle. Golden light rose. Her scan began. Renjiro watched. Cold appeared before the panel did.
The temperature around the circle dropped. A faint layer of frost formed across the invisible floor. Junpei breathed out. White mist.
“Okay. That's definitely Ice.”
Mika rubbed her arms.
“No kidding.”
The panel appeared.
CLASS: ICE SORCERESS
RANK: S
AFFINITY: ICE
Reina read it without obvious excitement. Chronies looked at her.
“You have unusually high elemental synchronization.”
“Is S the highest rank?” Reina asked.
“For the conventional Class scale available to mortals, yes.”
Conventional. Renjiro caught the qualifier. So did Reina. Her eyes shifted slightly.
“There are unconventional Classes?”
Chronies paused.
“Yes.”
“What ranks do they use?”
“Not all of them use ranks.”
Reina's expression changed by a fraction. Interest. Chronies continued.
“But that information is unlikely to be relevant to your current circumstances.”
Unlikely. Not impossible. Renjiro stored that too. Reina glanced at him once. Then her Blessing stage began.
Ice spread farther. The golden workflow opened. Renjiro followed it. A new complication appeared. Elemental synchronization altered the reconciliation process.
The System checked not only compatibility but interference between Class and Blessing. If conflict exceeded a threshold— rollback. There. He finally saw it. Not merely inferred.
A complete recovery path. The System retained a temporary pre-write state until verification ended. A backup. Renjiro's pulse remained steady. Important.
If a modification failed verification, the System could restore the previous state. Therefore any future change would have to survive reconciliation. Or appear to be something reconciliation itself had produced. Renjiro's eyes cooled slightly. There was the real problem.
And perhaps— the real opportunity. Reina's integration completed.
SHIRAKAWA REINA
CLASS: ICE SORCERESS
RANK: S
AFFINITY: ICE
BLESSING: INTEGRATED
The frost vanished. Reina stepped outside the circle. She looked at her hand. A tiny crystal of ice formed above her palm. Perfectly still.
She stared at it. Then closed her fingers. The ice disappeared. On her way back, she stopped beside Renjiro.
“Well?”
Renjiro looked at her.
“Well what?”
“My Class.”
“I heard it.”
“That's all?”
“Yes.”
Reina stared at him.
“You really were more interested in the circle.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because the result is already written in front of everyone.”
“And the process isn't.”
Renjiro looked at her. Reina's mouth curved very slightly.
“I see.”
Then she walked away. Renjiro watched her for a second. Observant. That was all. For now.
✦ ✦ ✦
The integrations continued. Time was difficult to measure inside the Divine Intermediate Space. No phone worked. No sun moved. No shadows changed.
Renjiro estimated roughly forty minutes had passed. Maybe fifty. He did not trust the estimate completely. Chronies showed no sign of fatigue. But Renjiro noticed something else.
Her attention was divided. Every integration required supervision. She was not manually controlling every operation. The System handled most of it. Chronies authorized.
Observed. Corrected when necessary. Confirmed the result. Competent design. Automation under privileged oversight.
Not carelessness. That mattered. Renjiro shifted his weight slightly. A student entered. Integration.
Another. Integration. Patterns accumulated. He began predicting transitions before they occurred. Authentication— now.
The golden strand brightened. Correct. Compatibility map— now. Symbols branched. Correct. Permission elevation—
three pulses. One. Two. Three. The inner ring changed.
Correct. Write. Verify. Reconcile. Close.
Again. Again. Again. By the twelfth integration, he no longer needed to consciously follow every outer ring. By the fifteenth, he could distinguish several symbols associated with target identity.
By the eighteenth, he could separate Class data from Blessing data with reasonable confidence. By the twentieth— he noticed the first thing that resembled a vulnerability. Not a flaw. A necessity. The trusted process had to accept compatibility corrections generated during reconciliation.
Otherwise it could not adapt templates to unique souls. Those corrections appeared under the same trusted authority as the original write. No separate authentication was visible. Because the process assumed its own reconciliation output was legitimate. Renjiro stared at the golden thread.
There. Not authentication. Not some imaginary administrator button. Reconciliation. Every system trusted something eventually.
The useful question was where. He had found one candidate. Candidate. Not proof. Renjiro did nothing.
He needed confirmation.
✦ ✦ ✦
“Takahashi Shizuka.”
Shizuka looked surprised.
“Me too?”
Chronies nodded.
“You were transferred with them. You require the same adaptation.”
Shizuka looked toward her students. Most had already completed integration. Several were quietly experimenting with sensations they barely understood. Tiny sparks. A flicker of light.
A cold breeze. Chronies had repeatedly warned them not to activate Skills intentionally yet. Shizuka stepped into the circle. Renjiro watched. Her compatibility scan took longer than average.
Light appeared. Then Barrier. Then Healing. Three structures overlapped. The System compared multiple templates.
One failed. Another reached partial compatibility. A third— locked.
CLASS: SANCTUARY GUARDIAN
RANK: A
AFFINITY: LIGHT • BARRIER • HEALING
Shizuka stared.
“Guardian…”
Chronies nodded.
“A Class suited to protecting others.”
Several students smiled. Junpei laughed softly.
“That fits Sensei way too well.”
Mika nodded.
“Yeah.”
Akari smiled too. Shizuka looked embarrassed.
“I don't know whether that's a compliment.”
“It is,” Akari said.
Shizuka's expression softened. Renjiro watched her for a second. Sanctuary Guardian. Predictable. Then the Blessing process opened.
Renjiro returned to the workflow. Another reconciliation. Another trusted correction path. The evidence was becoming consistent. Now he could begin thinking about his own turn.
Only his own. He had no reason to interfere with anyone else's profile. Renjiro's gaze lowered. Class. Blessing.
Those were what Chronies intended to provide. But the more important question was what information would be visible after they arrived in Asteria. The empire waiting there had dragged thirty students and one teacher across worlds without their consent. Chronies had already said the transfer itself could have killed them.
Renjiro had no reason to trust the people responsible. None. If they could inspect his status— dangerous. If they could see every ability he possessed— worse. Information asymmetry mattered.
He did not need to be stronger than everyone waiting on the other side. He needed control over what they learned about him. Freedom first. Power second. Shizuka's integration completed.
Golden light faded. She stepped out. Chronies called the next student. Renjiro began planning. Quietly.
Not a complete hack. A requirement list. First— concealment. A public profile so unimpressive that an empire searching for Heroes would have no reason to value him. Not blank.
Blank would be suspicious. Ordinary. Weak. Something recognizable. Unskilled Civilian.
Perhaps Farmer if the display demanded a conventional subtype. Level 1. Low Health. Low Mana. No meaningful Skills.
No useful affinity. Trash. Discardable. Renjiro almost found the idea funny. Almost.
But masking alone would not solve survival. Asteria contained monsters. Magic. Unknown diseases. Unknown toxins.
Unknown environments. Unknown forms of mental interference. He needed durability. Resources. Mobility.
Identity control. Storage. Adaptability. His mind reduced them into functions. Survival.
Autonomy. Concealment. Resources. Adaptability. Five problems.
Possible answers formed. Not names yet. Functions. A body capable of extreme self-sustainability. A creation authority capable of producing necessary tools and materials.
A disguise function capable of altering physical and informational identity. A storage space independent of ordinary carrying capacity. A status layer separating true data from displayed data. Renjiro reviewed each. Too broad.
Potentially incompatible. Potentially impossible. He did not know yet. That uncertainty mattered. If the architecture allowed custom reconciliation, perhaps some could be expressed as corrections.
Perhaps none could. He would find out when his own profile opened.
✦ ✦ ✦
More students finished. The group waiting for integration became smaller. Renjiro remained near the edge. Nobody questioned why he had not volunteered. Chronies was selecting the order herself.
Good. More time. He watched. Learned. Refined.
One process produced a minor incompatibility. Chronies raised two fingers. The golden rings stopped. Renjiro's attention sharpened immediately.
“Don't be afraid,” Chronies told the student.
The student looked terrified.
“What happened?”
“Your Blessing conflicts slightly with your Class.”
“Is that bad?”
“No.”
Chronies moved her hand. The System rolled back. Exactly as Renjiro had suspected. The Blessing data disappeared. The Class remained.
Partial rollback. Then the System generated a new Blessing candidate. Compatibility check. Pass. Write.
Verify. Close. Renjiro's eyes narrowed. There. Confirmation.
The correction pathway was flexible by design. The System expected incompatibility. It expected adaptation. It expected rewritten solutions. A changed profile was not inherently an error.
Only a change reconciliation could not justify would be rejected. His plan adjusted. If he ever modified his own integration, fighting verification would be the wrong approach. Better to make verification accept the change normally. No forced persistence.
No broken transaction. No obvious failure. Chronies remained focused on the student. She was not careless. Renjiro understood that more clearly now.
A crude intrusion would be stupid. So he would not attempt one.
✦ ✦ ✦
Eventually, only a handful remained. Renjiro. Several others. The atmosphere among Class 3-B had changed considerably. Fear had not vanished.
But power had given many of them something else to focus on. Possibility. Junpei whispered excitedly with Mika. Akari was asking Chronies about Healing. Daiki stood nearby, listening to everyone and occasionally calming someone who became too excited.
Shizuka continued trying to keep them organized. Reina approached Renjiro again.
“Kurogane-kun.”
“What?”
“You still haven't asked what Class you might get.”
“No.”
“You're not curious?”
“I am.”
“Then why not ask?”
Renjiro looked toward the active circle.
“Would asking change the result?”
Reina paused.
“Probably not.”
“Then I'll wait.”
She studied him.
“You've barely watched anyone's status panel.”
“I can read the result after it appears.”
“But you watch every integration.”
“Yes.”
“Because you want to understand how it works.”
Renjiro looked at her. Reina waited. He gave her nothing. After several seconds, she exhaled softly.
“I'll take that as a maybe.”
“Do whatever you want.”
“That sounds more like you.”
She walked away. Renjiro returned to the circle. Curious. Observant. Nothing more.
Not yet.
✦ ✦ ✦
“Fujimoto Kenta.”
Another integration. Then one more. Renjiro counted. Twenty-nine students completed. Shizuka completed.
One student remained. Him. Chronies looked across the white space. Her golden eyes found Renjiro.
“Kurogane Renjiro.”
Conversation stopped. Renjiro stepped forward. No hesitation. No visible concern. Junpei called from behind him.
“Good luck, Kurogane!”
Renjiro did not turn.
“Hmm.”
Mika frowned.
“That's your response to good luck?”
“Yes.”
Junpei sighed.
“Why do I even try?”
Renjiro entered the circle. Golden lines appeared beneath his shoes. For the first time— he stood inside the structure he had spent nearly an hour studying. The difference was immediate. From outside, the System had been visual. From inside—
he could feel the process acting on him. A thin pressure moved through his skin. Then deeper. Muscle. Bone.
Nerves. Then something he had no scientific term for. Soul. If Chronies' explanation was accurate. He remained still.
The first pulse arrived. Authentication. He recognized the pattern. Second. Identity validation.
Third. Soul mapping. Golden symbols appeared around him. Chronies watched. Renjiro lowered his eyes.
Not submissively. Just enough. His breathing slowed. His shoulders relaxed. Peripheral movement became minimal.
He controlled where his eyes moved and when. Small movements during larger visual changes. Saccadic masking. An old habit adapted to a new problem. The System entered compatibility analysis.
And for the first time, the patterns he had observed from outside were no longer merely visible. They had a direction. A pressure. A sequence he could feel as the process touched whatever Chronies called his soul. Renjiro did not suddenly understand the System.
He understood fragments. Enough fragments to compare them against the twenty-nine student integrations and Shizuka's. That was all. And it was enough to begin. The structure was far larger than he had modelled from outside.
Layers behind layers. Class libraries. Blessing architecture. Affinity mapping. Biological reconciliation.
Soul integrity. Transfer protection. Language adaptation. Environmental compatibility. More processes than he could follow at once.
Renjiro discarded everything irrelevant. Find the sequence he knew. Authentication. There. Target identity.
There. Compatibility workspace. There. Temporary trusted route— not yet. Wait.
Chronies' expression changed. Slightly.
“Interesting.”
Several classmates leaned forward. Junpei whispered—
“Oh no.”
Mika looked at him.
“What?”
“Whenever someone powerful says ‘interesting,’ something weird happens.”
“For once, I agree with you.”
Renjiro ignored them. Chronies studied the panel. His compatibility scan continued. Longer than Daiki's. Longer than Reina's.
Longer than anyone's. Multiple Class templates appeared. Rejected. Another. Rejected.
Another. Partial. Rejected. Chronies' eyebrows drew together. Renjiro watched the process.
Why? He had no reason to believe his soul was supernatural. So why was the mapping refusing to settle? He did not know. And he refused to invent an answer.
The System continued. Sword-related template. High compatibility. Rejected. Martial template.
High. Rejected. Scholar-type. High. Rejected.
Crafting. High. Rejected. Several magical pathways responded. The System hesitated.
Renjiro's eyes narrowed. Unexpected. Chronies lifted one hand. The scan expanded. More templates.
More branches. Junpei stared.
“Is that normal?”
Chronies did not answer. Renjiro felt the workflow adjust. More complexity. More reconciliation. A panel finally appeared.
But it flickered.
COMPATIBILITY RESULT: UNRESOLVED
Silence. Daiki frowned. Akari looked worried. Shizuka immediately stepped closer.
“What does that mean?”
Chronies stared at the panel.
“It means his compatibility does not settle cleanly into a single available Class.”
“Is that dangerous?” Shizuka asked.
“No.”
Chronies answered immediately this time.
“It is unusual. Not dangerous.”
Renjiro watched her. She meant it. Good. Chronies returned her attention to the System.
“I will allow the reconciliation layer to construct a compatible solution.”
There. Renjiro's heartbeat changed once. The trusted route expanded through his profile. The same authority pattern he had watched repeatedly entered the reconciliation workspace. Exactly as expected. Except now—
he was the target. The System began generating a custom correction. Renjiro observed the authorization pattern. Compared it. Mapped the boundary as far as he could.
Tested nothing. Not yet. One wrong assumption and Chronies could notice. The workflow generated its first proposal. Renjiro followed the structure.
Hybrid. Martial. Magic. Crafting. Broad compatibility.
Interesting. But still only the System's proposal. It moved toward verification. Renjiro waited. Three pulses.
Two. One. The reconciliation layer opened its correction channel. Now. Renjiro made the smallest test he could conceive.
Not an attack. Not a command. A deliberately malformed compatibility return inside his own reconciliation data. The System paused. For less than a fraction of a second.
Then corrected it automatically. No visible alarm. No reaction from Chronies. Renjiro waited. He did not repeat it immediately.
The process continued normally. Only then did he make a second test. Different shape. Same scale. The reconciliation layer corrected that too. Again—
no alarm. Because errors inside unresolved compatibility were exactly where corrections were expected. Renjiro understood the implication. He did not need to break into the workflow from outside. He was already inside the target profile.
The real challenge was making a change look like the workflow's own solution. The custom Class proposal dissolved. Chronies frowned.
“Hmm?”
Renjiro stopped immediately. Nothing else. No further interference. Chronies inspected the process. Renjiro waited.
Five seconds. Ten. She found nothing persistent because he had written nothing persistent. Only two tiny errors the reconciliation layer had already corrected itself. The System generated another proposal.
The workflow continued. Chronies' attention eased by a fraction. Renjiro waited. Patient. Cold.
The second reconciliation window opened. He was ready. But he still did not inject anything meaningful. He needed one final piece. The exact structure used to mark a compatibility correction as valid after verification.
The System produced it. Renjiro watched. A signature. Not a human checksum. Not code in any language he knew.
But structurally similar enough to serve the same purpose. The sequence told the verification layer one thing:
This change belongs here.
Renjiro memorized the pattern. Everything he needed for an attempt was finally present. Survival. Autonomy. Concealment.
Resources. Adaptability. Five requirements. Still only requirements. Not yet Skills.
Not yet success. Across the circle, Chronies continued supervising his integration. She saw an unusually complex compatibility problem. Nothing more. Renjiro lowered his gaze.
The golden rings rotated. The trusted route remained open. For the first time since Class 3-B vanished from Tokyo— Renjiro stopped merely observing the System.
He began to write.
End of Chapter 6
