Pei Jingyuan’s dinner took place in a French restaurant.

Luo Minyi was on a strict diet to maintain her figure. She barely touched the food, occasionally sipping from her glass of white wine.

Pei Jingyuan had indulged in a lavish dinner the night before, so he didn’t dare to eat too much today either. He ordered only a glass of basil lemon water.Full novel: The Cub Who Crossed The Wrong Time Line — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

The two mostly exchanged small talk.

When Luo Minyi excused herself to the restroom, Pei Jingyuan took the chance to snap a photo and sent it to Mr. Nie. His fingers quickly typed out a message:

“Please show Yuanbao the photo for me.”

A moment later, he added another line: “Has Yuanbao had dinner yet?”

Realizing his mistake, he hurriedly withdrew that message and rewrote it: “Have you and Yuanbao had dinner yet?”

He put the phone down.

Mr. Nie was a very busy man. There was no reason to expect a quick reply.

But unexpectedly, the screen lit up with a new voice message.

Pei Jingyuan tapped it open, expecting Mr. Nie’s calm voice, only to hear a soft, sweet, childish tone instead.

“Big brother~ I’m eating dinner with Daddy! Munch munch munch!”

The voice of the little boy melted him instantly.

Pei Jingyuan glanced toward the restroom door and while Luo Minyi was still away, he leaned closer to the microphone and whispered, “Yuanbao is such a good boy! Eat more, okay?”

It seemed that Mr. Nie had already told Yuanbao that he wouldn’t be home for dinner and the little one had forgiven him.

Another message soon appeared.

Yuanbao’s father wrote: “Mr. Pei, where are you dining? Yuanbao says he wants to pick you up and bring you home.”

“Huh?”

Pei Jingyuan blurted out the sound before he could stop himself.

“What’s wrong? Something urgent?” Luo Minyi had just returned and was sitting down. “If you’re busy, we can wrap up early.”

“No, it’s nothing.” Pei Jingyuan quickly explained, a little embarrassed by his reaction. “I just need to reply to a message.”

He typed: “It’s nearby. I’ll head straight home once we’re done, so there’s no need to trouble yourselves.”

Mr. Nie’s reply came quickly: “It’s no trouble. Send me the address.”

Pei Jingyuan hesitated, caught between politeness and warmth.

Across the table, Luo Minyi lifted her wine glass and gave him a calm, elegant smile.

Such a handsome young man, she thought. And yet, his agency hadn’t capitalized on his appearance or potential at all. From her experience, there must be some hidden reason behind it.

At the same time, in another dining room, Yuanbao was biting on his little yellow spoon, watching his father type.

“Daddy, what are you saying to Little Daddy?”

After sending the message, Nie Shenyuan set his phone aside and took out his own spoon.

Yuanbao knew that his Daddy didn’t like it when he bit the spoon, so he obediently switched to holding it properly with his chubby little hand, leaning forward curiously. “Oh! There’s a new message!”

Nie Shenyuan took a glance. It was a restaurant location.

A faint smile tugged at the corners of his lips. He reached out to gently pinch the little one’s cheek. “Finish your dinner first. Then we’ll go pick up your Little Daddy.”

“Wow!” Yuanbao gasped in delight, twisting his small body in excitement. He reached out to pat the kitten sitting beside him. “That’s great! We can go together to pick up Little Daddy!”

When dinner was finally over, Pei Jingyuan learned that Luo Minyi hoped to use this new film role, a villain, no less, to reshape her image. It was a small part but she wanted it to shine.

He found her ambition admirable.

He too wished that, decades from now, when he looked back on his acting career, every role he had played, no matter how minor, would sparkle like a gem in his personal history.

Still, the two weren’t close enough to talk deeply. When the meal ended, Luo Minyi merely smiled and said she wanted to treat him to dinner as a friendly gesture, no need to feel any pressure.

When they stepped outside, Pei Jingyuan politely saw her to her car.

The moment her car drove away, he caught sight of two familiar figures standing across the street, a father and son. His face lit up and he quickly waved.

Yuanbao, nestled in his father’s arms, waved back enthusiastically, even lifting the kitten in his hands to show his Little Daddy.

There were few cars at this hour, so Pei Jingyuan quickly crossed the road and reached out to gently touch the little one’s hand. “Yuanbao!”

Then he looked up and greeted the tall man beside him, his tone polite and warm. “Good evening, Mr. Nie. Thank you for coming all the way to pick me up.”

“Don’t mention it,” Nie Shenyuan replied smoothly before Yuanbao could even speak.

The child wasn’t paying any attention to manners. He wriggled excitedly in his father’s arms. “Big brother, the kitty really really likes you!”

Pei Jingyuan wanted nothing more than to hug the soft little boy but Nie Shenyuan didn’t loosen his grip.

“Yuanbao,” the man said gently, “Your brother’s had a long day. Let me hold you.”

“Oh.” Yuanbao obediently patted his Daddy’s arm to say he’d walk on his own.

When he stood on the ground, he reached out to hold his Little Daddy’s hand but then he realized he was still holding the kitten.

He looked up seriously and held it out to his father. “Daddy, can you hold it? Yuanbao is really light!”

Pei Jingyuan crouched down, meeting the child’s bright eyes with a soft smile. “Hmm? The kitten’s name is Yuanbao too?”

As soon as his father took the kitten, Yuanbao threw his arms around his Little Daddy’s neck, rubbing his chubby cheek against him affectionately.

Pei Jingyuan laughed softly and hugged the child back. “Comrade Yuanbao! If you keep being this cute, your brother might just take you home forever!”

Holding hands, the three of them walked toward the car together, Yuanbao bouncing happily between them, giggling all the way. It felt just like the old days, warm and full of laughter.

Driver Shen drove up slowly. As usual, he was about to get out and open the door but Mr. Nie raised his hand slightly to stop him.

Through the rearview mirror, the driver saw Mr. Nie personally open the back door.

He first helped Yuanbao into his child seat, then turned to Pei Jingyuan. “Please, Mr. Pei.”

The luxury black sedan was spacious but with the child seat installed, the back still felt a little tight.

Pei Jingyuan looked toward the front. “Perhaps I should sit in the front, ”

Before he could finish, Nie Shenyuan said, “I’ll take the front.”

So Pei Jingyuan sat beside Yuanbao, holding the kitten and watching as Mr. Nie closed the door and moved to the passenger seat.

Pei couldn’t help but think to himself, so this is what mature men in their thirties are like. Everything they do is measured, composed and courteous.

He had so much to learn.

Yuanbao poked his distracted Little Daddy’s arm. “Hmm?”

Was he not cute enough? Why wasn’t Little Daddy looking at him?

Pei Jingyuan smiled and turned to him at once. “Yuanbao~ what did you do for fun today?”

From the front seat, Nie Shenyuan could hear the two of them whispering to each other in soft, playful tones. Their voices mingled like a quiet melody. He glanced back, just once.

Pei Jingyuan was sitting slightly sideways toward the boy, his long legs outlined beneath light-colored trousers, the fabric smooth and fitted. His shirt clung softly to his slender waist, accentuating the lean curve of his body.

Nie Shenyuan’s gaze froze, then abruptly shifted forward.

The glossy hood of the car reflected the passing lights in streaks of gold and white.

For a fleeting moment, he recalled how the young man had eaten last night, slowly, carefully, taking tiny bites even when pretending to eat more.

A thought flickered across his mind before he could stop it. So that’s why his waist is so thin.

Realizing where his mind had gone, Nie Shenyuan frowned, his expression darkening.

In the driver’s seat, Shen risked a glance through the mirror. The boss looked so serious, was something wrong?

Meanwhile, Yuanbao, exhausted from running around all afternoon, was already nodding off. By the time the car stopped, his eyelids were drooping but his small hand still clung tightly to Pei Jingyuan’s fingers, afraid to let go.

Pei Jingyuan offered to carry him upstairs.

The little boy’s head rested on his shoulder, his voice soft and sleepy. “Yuanbao…”

Nie Shenyuan lifted the kitten and showed it to him. “I’ve got it.”

“Mm…”

Still half-asleep, Yuanbao was surrounded by warmth, the sound of his father’s steady voice, the steady rhythm of breathing and drifted into dreams.

Pei Jingyuan tilted his head slightly, cheek brushing against the child’s soft hair.

He couldn’t help thinking how warm Yuanbao must feel in winter, like a little living heater.

But by then, they might no longer be neighbors. The thought made him unconsciously hold the boy tighter.

When the elevator reached the eleventh floor, the two men entered Apartment 1102.

Nie Shenyuan didn’t ask to take the child right away; instead, he quietly opened the door, so Pei Jingyuan carried Yuanbao straight to bed.

Only after the boy was settled did Mr. Nie step forward, gently removing the little shoes and tucking him under the blanket. He reached for the panda plush lying in the middle of the bed and placed it in Yuanbao’s small hands. The boy’s fingers brushed the toy and a contented smile softened his sleeping face.

Pei Jingyuan nearly melted on the spot. So cute!

His gaze drifted to the other side of the bed. Did Mr. Nie usually sleep there too, right next to Yuanbao? Maybe even with an arm around him?

Jealousy prickled faintly in his chest.

When Mr. Nie turned back, Pei Jingyuan quickly composed himself, forcing a polite smile and gesturing toward the door to indicate that he should leave.

But Nie Shenyuan stopped him with a subtle motion, nodding toward the balcony.

Pei Jingyuan hesitated, then followed, thinking perhaps there was something important to discuss about Yuanbao.

The night breeze of May was soft and pleasant. From the balcony, the rows of streetlights below looked like a river of gold.

Nie Shenyuan glanced back into the room and closed the sliding door quietly.

“Mr. Pei,” he said.

“Yes?” Pei Jingyuan noticed that although the balcony seemed spacious, it suddenly felt much smaller with the tall man standing there. “Is it something about Yuanbao?”

Was it possible they were planning to move away?

The thought made him instantly alert, eyes focused on the man before him.

The moonlight poured gently over them, glimmering in his clear eyes like ripples of water.

Nie Shenyuan met that gaze and said slowly, “Don’t be nervous. I just wanted to chat. Do you have other work tonight?”

“No,” Pei Jingyuan replied, shaking his head. He had already memorized his lines for tomorrow’s shoot. Even if he had work, a few minutes of conversation wouldn’t make any difference.

He realized that Mr. Nie’s voice tonight was calm and gentle, carrying a quiet warmth that contrasted sharply with his usually stern appearance.

Nie Shenyuan seemed to study him for a moment. “Why did you decide to become an actor, Mr. Pei?”

“Hmm?”

The unexpected question made Pei Jingyuan look up. The man’s gaze was steady, almost searching.

Caught off guard, Pei Jingyuan smiled awkwardly. “It was kind of an accident, really.”

After a pause, he glanced toward the bedroom where the little bundle slept peacefully and said softly, “I’m not particularly good at anything else.”

Nie Shenyuan remembered how, during a livestream, the young man had blushed easily and struggled to face the camera directly.

“You mean, the livestream with your friend?”

“Something like that,” Pei Jingyuan said, his voice light but his eyes shining faintly in the moonlight.

Pei Jingyuan turned around, bracing both hands on the window railing as he leaned forward slightly. The pose made his long legs look even straighter, more refined in their lines.

Nie Shenyuan’s eyes swept over him in passing. The window was half open. He reached out and pushed it farther to the side, giving Pei Jingyuan a little more room to lean comfortably.

The movement made Pei Jingyuan think of last night’s “WeChat incident,” that small, one-sided embarrassment. His head instinctively lowered.

A light breeze brushed through his dark hair.

Maybe it was because of how careful and natural Mr. Nie’s gestures were, so considerate, like an older brother who quietly thought of everything, that Pei Jingyuan couldn’t help but speak in a low voice, “I’ve realized I’m not very good at… socializing.”

For him to take the initiative to say more was already a surprise to Nie Shenyuan.

“So tonight’s dinner,” Nie asked mildly, “was that difficult socializing for you?”

Pei Jingyuan shook his head slightly. “The person I met was a really nice senior, so it wasn’t hard.” Then he lifted his eyes and smiled faintly. “Besides, I had my own motive.”

Nie Shenyuan glanced into the room to make sure Yuanbao was sound asleep before leaning his shoulder against the window ledge. His gaze settled on the young man’s smiling face, his expression showing genuine curiosity. “Oh?”

Seeing that Nie seemed interested, Pei Jingyuan rarely opened up.

“I thought… If I’m going to stay in the entertainment industry, there’ll inevitably be times I’ll have to attend dinners and gatherings like this. Since it’s something I’ll have to face sooner or later, I might as well take the chance to observe quietly, to learn a few things about how people interact.”

Nie Shenyuan hadn’t expected that a young man like him would think so far ahead.

Pei Jingyuan thought of Luo Minyi and continued, “Coincidentally, the senior today was really good with words, measured and polite. A perfect person to observe and learn from.”

“Observe.” Nie Shenyuan repeated the word softly, as if tasting its layers. His eyes lowered slightly. “And what about me?”

“Hmm?” Pei Jingyuan froze. Why did the topic turn so suddenly?

“I mean,” Nie said, “am I also fortunate enough to be one of the people you observe?”

“Uh…” Pei Jingyuan was at a loss. He didn’t just observe him, he practically studied him. He stammered, “Mr. Nie, you’re… you’re a very outstanding, very successful…”

Didn’t he already admit he wasn’t good at social interaction? Right now, he wanted to jump straight out of the window.

The moonlight spilled gently through the glass, illuminating the faint flush spreading behind his ear.

Nie Shenyuan’s eyes lingered there, his tone deliberately calm. “It’s alright. Go ahead. I’m quite interested in hearing how a professional actor observes ordinary people.”

“How could you be an ordinary person?” Pei Jingyuan blurted out before he could stop himself.

For a brief moment, their eyes met. Pei Jingyuan immediately felt an invisible pressure, was this man planning not to let him go until he answered properly?

Yuanbao, please wake up right now.

Your brother really needs help.

Your Daddy is terrifying.

Nie Shenyuan caught the flicker in his eyes and asked gently, “Am I making you feel pressured?”

“No.”

Pei Jingyuan dropped his gaze and looked down at the street below, his expression carefully blank.

“From what I’ve seen these past few days,” he said after a moment, “Mr. Nie, you probably come from a privileged background and you clearly have intelligence and capability far above the average. In today’s terms, you’re rich, talented…” He paused briefly in his head, adding silently and handsome, with a beautiful child.

A complete winner in life.

Nie raised an eyebrow slightly. “And what about my personality?”

Brother, are you doing a fortune-telling session now?

He took a deep breath and forced himself to go on. “You’re confident but not arrogant. You have your own opinions and sense of direction. You don’t shy away from problems or difficulties easily.”

Nie Shenyuan asked quietly, “And what do you base that judgment on?”

Pei Jingyuan turned his head, giving a small, self-deprecating smile. “Mr. Nie, I don’t have your experience. My reading of people is often very subjective.”

The words “your experience” struck a faint chord in Nie Shenyuan’s chest. His brows furrowed slightly before he let the thought pass.

“Don’t be nervous,” he said mildly. “I’m just curious. This is my first time getting to know a professional actor. I’d like to understand how you observe people. I’m not judging your interpretation.”

“I see.”

Pei Jingyuan felt relieved; that explanation made sense. So he continued frankly, “Usually we observe others through their body language and eyes, trying to read their current emotions. It’s a kind of deduction, from the surface inward. It’s not always accurate, of course, since we’re not fortune-tellers.”

Nie Shenyuan nodded, signaling for him to continue.

“Psychologically speaking,” Pei Jingyuan went on, “when someone’s posture is often open and relaxed, it means they feel safe and confident. They’re not on guard. They have a sense of control. For example, my judgment of you is based on your movements, how you walk, stand, or sit.”

“I’ve seen you several times now and you rarely have postures that are closed off or restrained. Even when entering a new environment, your stance remains natural and composed. You’re clearly not defensive or wary.”

“Even yesterday, when Yuanbao and I had that small argument at my door, you didn’t look flustered or angry. You stayed calm, rational and composed, completely in control, like an adult who never loses his balance.”

The more Pei Jingyuan spoke, the more absorbed he became, recreating those scenes in his mind as he explained.

He didn’t notice that Nie Shenyuan was watching him with a faint, amused smile.

“And?” Nie prompted.

“When you helped me carry those things earlier, I noticed you’re the kind of person who insists on doing things thoroughly. Once you decide something, no matter how small, you carry it through to the end.”

“Would that kind of persistence make you uncomfortable?”

“No, not at all.”

Pei Jingyuan looked up abruptly, realizing he had said far too much to someone he had only met a few days ago.

“Uh…”

Nie cleared his throat and shifted the topic. “So these observations help you when you’re playing a role?”

That question instantly eased Pei Jingyuan’s nerves. “Yes, they do. My life experience is still limited and I’m what people call a ‘deep immersion actor.’ For every character, I need to understand where they came from.”

“Where did they come from?”

Pei Jingyuan nodded. “Scripts, especially for supporting roles, don’t always give you full backstories. Sometimes all you have is one short scene and all the script says is something like ‘cries’ or ‘smiles.’”

He didn’t realize how long it had been since he last talked about his craft like this. The more he spoke, the more engrossed he became.

“For example, if the script says ‘cries,’ I have to think about how they cry, at which line, on which word, does the emotion break? Do the tears fall freely, one after another, or does just one tear slip out, or maybe the eyes only redden and hold back tears? All of that depends on why they’re crying, what happened before that moment.”

Nie Shenyuan finally understood what he meant by “where they came from.”

“The screenwriter doesn’t give that kind of background?”

“For main characters, usually yes,” Pei said with a small smile. “But for supporting roles, not always. Most of my roles so far have been minor, so I have to fill in their past myself, to think again and again about what led them to that moment and what kind of person they’ve become because of it.”

Nie Shenyuan could sense the quiet fascination of the acting world behind those words. “Does thinking about these things, acting out these roles, make you happy?”

“Of course,” Pei Jingyuan said softly. “When I’m acting, I don’t have to be myself. I can be someone else entirely.”

He lowered his head, voice dropping to a whisper. “When I play someone else, I feel more at ease.”

Nie Shenyuan didn’t miss the subtle change in tone or the way he moved when he said it.

“So that’s why you don’t like live streaming, or appearing much on social media?”

“Mm.” Pei nodded, his gaze distant. “Mr. Nie, we shouldn’t talk anymore.”

Nie, unexpectedly intrigued, asked something he rarely did. “Why?”

In his thirty-odd years, it was rare for him to ever ask why.

Pei didn’t notice. He only looked a little embarrassed. “There’s an old saying, when making friends, one shouldn’t speak too deeply when the friendship is still shallow.”

“So we’re friends now?”

“Eh?” Pei looked up instinctively, startled once again by how Mr. Nie could speak so directly, so freely, without the slightest hesitation. Truly the posture of someone used to being in control.

He nodded quickly and pointed toward the bedroom. “Then… I’ll head back now. It’s getting late.”

Nie naturally couldn’t insist on keeping him. “I’ll walk you out.”

They walked out one after the other.

As they passed by the bed, Pei Jingyuan couldn’t resist glancing down at the little child sleeping soundly, face buried in the pillow.

See you tomorrow, little Yuanbao.

Only when they reached the doorway did Pei realize, Mr. Nie was actually walking him all the way to Room 1101

.

That was… quite courteous.

He opened the door and said politely, “Mr. Nie, you should go back and rest.”

Nie glanced once at the dim light by the entryway. “If nothing unusual happens, I usually sleep between nine-thirty and ten.”

“Huh?”

Pei blinked, then understood, he was explaining why he hadn’t replied to the message last night.

Nie said simply, “Go inside. See you tomorrow.”

Pei nodded and closed the door under his gaze.

Once inside, he stood by the entryway without moving.

Has something happened to Mr. Nie? Why was he suddenly in the mood to talk about acting?

He frowned slightly, his thoughts spinning. Could it be that he had something weighing on him, something he couldn’t share or express and just wanted a random conversation to distract himself?

Given his situation, it wasn’t impossible.

Pei sighed softly, hoping it wasn’t anything serious.

That night, Nie Shenyuan couldn’t fall asleep.

He removed his black eye mask and turned his head toward the balcony.

In the quiet, the words Pei Jingyuan had said about him, his “judgments” and “analysis”, kept echoing faintly in his ears.

One line after another, lingering like ripples that refused to fade.
