Pei Jingyuan knelt down on one knee, holding the little cub tightly in his arms.
As he steadied his breathing, he noticed the housekeeper standing nearby.
The auntie looked completely puzzled, but since this was someone else’s home, she didn’t dare move around without permission. She stood quietly in the living room, waiting for instructions.
Pei Jingyuan, ever polite, said, “Auntie, could you please boil some hot water in the kitchen? Thank you so much.”
The auntie hurried off to do as he asked.
Only then did Yuanbao notice that his little dad was still holding his injured right hand up.
His small face froze, tears still clinging to his lashes, refusing to fall. His lips trembled as he asked cautiously, “Little dad… Did Yuanbao touch your hand? Does it hurt?”
His tiny hands hovered midair, wanting to reach out but not daring to.
That soft, round little face scrunched up tight, all five features tangled together in worry and guilt.
Pei Jingyuan turned his left hand and brushed the back of it lightly over the little dumpling’s tears. “Silly little thing, your brother knows how to protect himself.”
He lifted his right arm, moving it slightly back and forth from the elbow. “See? It doesn’t hurt at all.”
“Ah! Don’t move!”
Yuanbao’s anxious voice cracked. He stamped his little foot but didn’t dare to grab the injured arm.
“Alright, alright, I’ll listen to Yuanbao,” Pei Jingyuan soothed. “Brother won’t move anymore.”
He held the child’s hand gently and guided him toward the sofa.
Yuanbao hurried forward, pushing his little dad to sit in the corner of the couch. His chubby palm patted the armrest softly. “Little dad, your hand goes here, okay?”
Pei Jingyuan rested his arm there obediently, a faint smile appearing on his face. “Perfect. Just like that. Yuanbao is so clever.”
Yuanbao leaned halfway onto the sofa edge, eyes fixed on that injured hand. His lips puffed up, his expression all gloom.
If he were really clever, he thought, then little dad wouldn’t have gotten hurt at all.
Seeing that tiny face cloud over, Pei Jingyuan quickly changed the subject. “Yuanbao, could you help brother by bringing that tissue box over?”
“Huh? Where is it? Where is it?” Yuanbao turned at once, his voice urgent.
Pei Jingyuan pointed toward the dining table.
Yuanbao ran off with quick little steps, his shoes tapping across the floor, then came running back with a small wooden box in both arms. “Here, little dad!”
Pei Jingyuan had long learned to automatically tune out that particular title. He pulled out a wet tissue and gently wiped the streaks beneath the child’s eyes.
He puffed his own cheeks slightly, speaking with a soft smile. “Yuanbao, promise brother something, alright? Don’t cry so easily. Brother and your daddy will both worry a lot.”
Just then, the auntie returned with a cup of hot water.
Pei Jingyuan added warmly, “See, even Auntie will worry. And Chef Uncle, and your daddy’s assistant too.”
“Oh.” Yuanbao tilted his head and leaned forward, rubbing his chubby cheek against Pei Jingyuan’s palm.
Pei Jingyuan blinked. Wow. He quickly took the cup from the auntie and held it to the child’s lips.
But Yuanbao gently pushed it back. “Little dad should drink. Yuanbao isn’t thirsty at all.”
*Knock* *Knock* *Knock*
The sound of knocking broke through the quiet moment.
All three inside the room turned toward the front door.
“I’ll get it,” said the auntie at once.
“Nooo!” Yuanbao reached out his tiny hand, trying to stop her.
Pei Jingyuan thought for a second, then took advantage of the child’s distraction to quietly open WeChat and make a call to Mr. Nie.
The line connected immediately.
“Mr. Nie?” Pei Jingyuan said deliberately, glancing at Yuanbao, who turned to look at him with wide, curious eyes. Pei Jingyuan puffed his lips and gave him an exaggerated cute expression.
The sight of his adorable little dad made Yuanbao instantly forget about his big dad. He threw himself happily onto Pei Jingyuan’s lap, giggling.
On the other end of the line, Nie Shenyuan’s voice came through, calm and low. “Mr. Pei, is Yuanbao alright? Is your hand okay?”
Pei Jingyuan answered slowly, emphasizing each word. “Yuanbao’s being such a good boy. He helped me bring things and even took care of me.”
Hearing himself praised, Yuanbao’s ears turned pink. He buried his face into Pei Jingyuan’s knee, rubbing shyly against it.
Pei Jingyuan hesitated for a moment, then said, half-playfully, “Mr. Nie, I’m so hungry. Can I come to your place and freeload a meal?”
“Huh?” Yuanbao immediately looked up, his small hands reaching to touch Pei Jingyuan’s stomach.
Poor little dad! He didn’t even wait for big dad to reply before chirping, “Let’s go eat, little dad! There’ll be big shrimp! Chef Uncle’s cooking, it’s super yummy!”
Pei Jingyuan looked down at that innocent, round face and felt a pang of guilt.
Was the little one always this easy to fool?
Nie Shenyuan, of course, saw through the ploy.
“I’ll have the chef start preparing right away,” he said.
When the call ended, Pei Jingyuan didn’t rush to leave. Instead, he rubbed the child’s fluffy head. “Yuanbao, your daddy worries about you so much. That’s why he called me, you know?”
The little one gave a tiny hum of protest, though his pout only made him look cuter.
Pei Jingyuan almost laughed aloud. That little wiggle of his hips was too much, too adorable to bear. He barely resisted the urge to give him a pat.
He continued, “Your daddy takes care of you every day, makes sure you have yummy food…”
But Yuanbao interrupted with a grumble, his voice muffled and sulky. “Big dad doesn’t make yummy food! Big dad wastes little potatoes!”
“Uh…” Pei Jingyuan choked. “But your daddy holds you almost all the time, doesn’t he? Carries you around everywhere. I heard that parents do that because they love their children very, very much.”
Yuanbao puffed up his cheeks and complained, “Big dad said Yuanbao’s legs are short!”
Pei Jingyuan froze.
Was that really something Mr. Nie would say to this tiny cub?
Completely undignified. What happened to his gentlemanly image?
He had to make sure. “Really?”
“Mm…” Yuanbao answered softly, his little voice full of grievance. “Big dad doesn’t like Yuanbao because I walk too slow.”
“Oh!!”
Pei Jingyuan deliberately raised his tone in a dramatic way, instantly catching the little cub’s attention.
Under Yuanbao’s confused gaze, he came up with a perfectly reasonable explanation. “That’s not it at all. Your daddy just wanted to hold you but was too shy to say so, so he made up an excuse. You know, sometimes what adults say and what they really think aren’t the same.”
He reached out and gently pinched Yuanbao’s soft earlobe. “Does Yuanbao sometimes hear the strange things adults say?”
Yuanbao quickly grabbed his little dad’s wrist, blinking his round eyes.
“But little dad, weren’t you hungry? Why are you still talking about big dad?”
“Ah? Well…”
Pei Jingyuan looked at the clever and adorably innocent cub in surprise, rubbing his fluffy hair. He muttered under his breath, “Little Yuanbao, promise me, don’t be too smart, alright?”
If he grew up this sharp, he’d outwit everyone.
At that moment, the auntie opened the door for them.
Nie Shenyuan was standing outside, waiting quietly. His eyes swept over Pei Jingyuan’s face and his injured wrist before finally settling on the small cub at his side.
He bent down slightly. “Shall I carry you?”
Pei Jingyuan froze for a second, remembering that little comment about “short legs.”
Wait… was that really something Mr. Nie had said?
Yuanbao quickly turned his face away from his father, refusing to look at him.
He wrapped both arms tightly around his little dad’s leg instead.
Pei Jingyuan couldn’t help laughing. “How’s your brother supposed to walk like this?”
He reached out a hand. “Come on, Yuanbao. Brother will hold your hand.”
Yuanbao obediently placed his small, warm hand into Pei Jingyuan’s palm. His lips curved into a sweet smile, and he tugged him forward. “Let’s go eat dinner~”
When the two of them entered the apartment next door, Nie Shenyuan gestured for the auntie not to follow.
The auntie was visibly relieved.
After all, she had heard everything earlier, the little master calling Mr. Pei “little dad.”
Mr. Nie was “big dad,” and Mr. Pei was “little dad.”
The relationship between the two was simply beyond imagination.
At the dining table.
Yuanbao noticed that the utensils set out for his little dad were not long, slender chopsticks, but a spoon, one almost identical to his own, just with a longer handle.
He blinked and glanced thoughtfully at his big dad sitting across the table.
Pei Jingyuan also noticed the long-handled spoon and said cheerfully, “Wow, thank you, Mr. Nie. That’s really thoughtful.”
He didn’t even realize that the tone he used with Mr. Nie was nearly identical to how he spoke with Yuanbao, gentle, playful, and light.
It was the natural reflex of someone who had spent too much time coaxing children at kindergarten. Even his words carried a soft hint of affection.
Nie Shenyuan paused for a brief moment, then quietly ladled soup into bowls, deliberately avoiding the pieces with bones.
“Mr. Pei, tell me what you’d like to eat. I’ll get it for you.”
Pei Jingyuan nodded in gratitude.
For the first time in his life, he truly understood the saying that “a distant relative is not as good as a nearby neighbor.”
Once Nie Shenyuan placed the bowl down, Yuanbao immediately reached for his small spoon. “Yuanbao will feed little dad!”
“No need.” Pei Jingyuan instantly raised his own spoon and put on a serious face. “Little Yuanbao, eat your food properly.”
But the little one wasn’t intimidated at all by this show of sternness. Instead, he leaned happily against his little dad’s arm, giggling.
Then he turned his gaze toward his big dad, his small expression turning commanding. “Big dad, give little dad some shrimp!”
That clear, ringing “big dad” was unmistakable.
Nie Shenyuan calmly picked up the serving chopsticks and placed several pieces of shrimp onto both Pei Jingyuan’s and Yuanbao’s plates.
Pei Jingyuan scooped one up with his spoon and tasted it. The rich flavor burst across his tongue, and his entire face lit up with satisfaction. “I was just thinking this morning how nice it would be to have marinated shrimp tonight. What a coincidence. I’m already in a good mood.”
He hadn’t expected that by afternoon he’d be caught up in a little “disaster.”
Nie Shenyuan’s voice was steady. “You can have it more often if you like.”
“Alright, then I won’t be polite,” Pei Jingyuan replied casually, assuming Nie was only referring to the next few days.
He took a spoonful of white rice and placed it into his mouth.
Even the rice at Yuanbao’s home seemed to have a richer, more fragrant flavor than anywhere else.
Was he imagining it because he was hungry?
Pei Jingyuan frowned slightly, took another spoonful, and tasted it again carefully.
Good news: the rice was indeed delicious and sweet.
Bad news: he really shouldn’t eat too much of it.
Yuanbao saw this and quickly mimicked him, taking a huge bite of rice with an exaggerated open mouth, chewing with glee.
Nie Shenyuan watched the two of them, one big, one small, sitting side by side, sharing the same gentle air of warmth. For a moment, he forgot to lift his own chopsticks.
His gaze lingered on Pei Jingyuan’s face, deep and thoughtful. A faint ache stirred in his chest.
So this was what feelings were like, an equation where even when you already knew the answer, you still couldn’t solve it.
Dinner came to an end.
Pei Jingyuan noticed that the atmosphere between father and son had softened considerably.
Since his right hand was still inconvenient to use, he thought it best to head back early to wash up and also give the two of them some private time together.
But before he could say anything, Yuanbao spoke first. “Little dad, can Yuanbao sleep with you tonight?”
Pei Jingyuan’s ears twitched at that, and he rubbed them before glancing at Mr. Nie.
He decided privately that he would have to find a chance to ask about this situation properly.
In truth, Nie Shenyuan had already planned to have a talk with Pei Jingyuan, but tonight wasn’t the right time.
So he didn’t correct the child’s choice of address and simply let it be.
He crouched down to meet the little one’s eyes. “Yuanbao, your brother’s hand is hurt. I’ll ask Auntie to stay with him tonight. You can stay home with daddy, alright?”
“Hmm?” Yuanbao didn’t throw a tantrum or push away his big dad. Instead, he pursed his lips and whispered softly, “But I want to stay with little dad…”
The sight of the little cub’s pitiful expression tugged at Nie Shenyuan’s heart far more than he expected.
He sighed and scooped Yuanbao up, one large hand rubbing soothingly over his small back.
“Mr. Pei, would it be alright if Yuanbao and I came over to accompany you for a while?”
Pei Jingyuan had no real objection.
But when his eyes met Nie Shenyuan’s composed, serious face, all he could think of was the chaotic mess that was his own apartment.
He felt a little embarrassed, his voice dropping unconsciously, sounding like a careless student being caught by a strict teacher.
“My place is a little messy…” Pei Jingyuan admitted, scratching his neck awkwardly.
“It’s not messy at all~” Yuanbao waved his tiny hand in reassurance, his chubby face full of earnestness.
“Alright then.”
Pei Jingyuan turned around and walked toward the door, raising his right hand slightly as he smiled. “Then I’ll trouble Mr. Nie to help me wrap this with plastic film later, otherwise I won’t be able to take a shower.”
Yuanbao wriggled restlessly in his big dad’s arms, trying to crawl out. “Big dad, hurry up~”
Seeing that the little one no longer mentioned “not wanting big dad,” Nie Shenyuan finally felt a quiet sense of relief.
The three of them entered apartment 1101 together.
Nie Shenyuan swept a calm, observant gaze around the space.
He had never really been inside a young man’s apartment before, so he had nothing to compare it to, but his first impression was clear, there were a lot of things scattered about. From the look of it, Pei Jingyuan must be very busy, rarely finding the time to tidy up.
What Yuanbao had said before made sense. This place really did need someone to help look after it.
Nie’s gaze paused briefly on Pei Jingyuan’s slender figure, lingering for a moment at his narrow waist.
Still so young, he thought silently. No wonder he doesn’t take proper care of himself.
Pei Jingyuan, meanwhile, was thinking about how Nie would need to bring Yuanbao to rest later. It would be best if he washed up quickly to avoid keeping them up too long.
“I’ll get the plastic wrap from the kitchen.”
“I’ll help you.”
Nie set Yuanbao down carefully on the sofa, his large hand ruffling the boy’s soft hair. “Sit here and wait quietly, alright?”
Yuanbao nodded with great seriousness. Of course he wouldn’t run around and make the adults worry.
To show just how well-behaved he was, he deliberately shuffled inward until he was sitting deep against the sofa cushions. His two little legs rested completely on the seat, only his bare feet sticking out, swinging back and forth in the air.
Nie gave a faint smile before heading toward the kitchen.
Inside, the cupboard doors were all open. Pei Jingyuan was clearly searching for something.
He was rummaging through a plastic shopping bag when his voice brightened. “Found it!”
Nie remembered that same bag, it was the one Pei Jingyuan had been carrying the first time they met. It was still sitting at the corner of the counter, some of its contents untouched.
He took the new roll of plastic wrap from him and grabbed a pair of scissors.
Pei Jingyuan leaned slightly against the counter edge, looking embarrassed. “My place must look really messy, huh? I’m sure it’s nothing like what you’re used to. Sorry for the sight.”
Nie glanced at him, his voice low and even. “It’s normal for someone living alone.”
For a moment, Pei Jingyuan felt his heart give a strange little jolt. When Nie’s deep eyes met his, it was as if they carried a quiet gravity, so still, yet somehow full of stories.
What an actor he’d make, Pei thought suddenly. Just a single look, and it felt like he could pull you into his world, make you want to know everything about his past.
Flustered, he straightened up. “Let’s… go back to the living room.”
Let’s?
Nie repeated the word silently in his mind, tasting it. We.
He turned slightly, his eyes following the younger man’s back, and then followed him out.
Yuanbao spotted his two dads walking toward him together and immediately collapsed sideways on the sofa, laughing, his earlier temper completely forgotten.
Pei Jingyuan had no idea what had made the little cub so happy, so he poked that round cheek with a finger.
Yuanbao puffed up his face even more, inviting more pokes with a delighted grin.
Nie sat down beside them and began to wrap Pei Jingyuan’s arm below the elbow with the plastic film, his movements careful and precise. Throughout the process, he kept his focus on not causing the slightest pain.
“When you finish showering, apply an ice pack again before bed,” Nie instructed gently.
“Alright.” Pei Jingyuan nodded, then smiled lightly. “It wasn’t hurting that much, but now that you’ve said it, I feel like it’s starting to ache again.”
Nie frowned slightly. “It hurts more? Did I wrap it too tightly?”
“No, no.” Pei Jingyuan laughed softly. “It’s just that bone injuries always hurt anyway. But having Yuanbao talk to me distracts me a bit, it helps me forget.”
He turned to tease the little one. “Isn’t that right, Yuanbao?”
The moment Yuanbao heard the word “hurt,” his little face fell, his mouth drooping in distress. He shook his head quickly, his voice trembling. “Yuanbao doesn’t want little dad to hurt.”
The poor cub had never seen his little dad injured before, and he looked completely lost, not knowing what to do. His big round eyes were filled with worry, and his tiny fingers curled into fists against his knees, as if that could somehow stop the pain for him.
He had never once seen his little dad get hurt before, so he truly didn’t know what to do. The sight left him flustered, his small hands clenching and unclenching at his sides.
After a moment of thought, Yuanbao lifted his round little face and asked in all seriousness, “Little dad, can Yuanbao take a bath with you?”
Then, as if remembering something very important, he added hurriedly, “Yuanbao can help you get things too!”
Pei Jingyuan couldn’t help but smile. “Thank you, Yuanbao, but big brother can handle it.”
He nodded earnestly and said, “You wait for me outside, alright? If I don’t feel well, you have to shout really loudly, ‘Yuanbao, come save brother!’ Then you rush in like a hero and protect me, okay?”
Yuanbao nodded solemnly, puffing up his cheeks. “Okay!”
The little cub was trying so hard to be serious that his soft voice and determined expression made him look even more adorably babyish.
Pei Jingyuan’s heart softened, and he reached out to ruffle the boy’s silky hair.
He couldn’t help but think that if it hadn’t been for this father and son, today might have been quite a troublesome day for him indeed.
After saying that, he walked into the bathroom and closed the door behind him.
Yuanbao immediately dashed toward the living room, his little steps pattering quickly against the floor. But after a few seconds of searching, he frowned, he couldn’t find his little stool anywhere.
He jumped in place, calling loudly, “Big dad~ I need the little stool!”
Then he pointed to the bathroom door with his chubby finger. “To sit here and wait for little dad!”
Nie Shenyuan, of course, would never leave the child alone, especially with someone injured inside the bathroom.
He took off his suit jacket and draped it neatly over the spot Yuanbao had pointed to, then bent down and sat there. With a gentle motion, he lifted the little boy onto his lap. “I’ll wait with you.”
Yuanbao turned around in his lap, his big bright eyes fixed on the closed bathroom door. His small face glowed with anticipation. How wonderful!
When little dad comes out, he would be the first to see him.
Nie leaned back slightly, resting against the white wall, his broad palm settling protectively over the little cub’s head.
Then, quite unexpectedly, Yuanbao twisted around, lunged forward, and planted a quick, soft kiss on his big dad’s cheek.
Before Nie could react, Yuanbao turned back just as swiftly, sitting up straight again as if nothing at all had happened.
The faintest trace of surprise flickered in Nie’s eyes. He could still feel the touch, light as a feather, warm and fleeting against his skin.
He gathered the little cub gently into his arms, his voice low. “Why did you suddenly kiss me?”
Yuanbao puffed up his cheeks, his small mouth pushing out in stubborn denial. He lifted his chin proudly and said, “Yuanbao didn’t kiss big dad!”
Nie’s eyebrows curved in amusement, and the corners of his lips softened. He reached out and pinched the child’s plump cheek.
Just like before, Yuanbao tilted his head away with a pout and started muttering under his breath, “No pinching little face!”
Nie chuckled, listening to the sound of water running behind the bathroom door. “So only your little dad is allowed to pinch it, is that right?”
Yuanbao sat up straighter, his chest puffing out like a tiny, triumphant rooster. “Mmm~~~” he answered, dragging out the sound with exaggerated pride.
Nie couldn’t help but laugh quietly. The boy’s smug little tone, full of innocent affection, somehow made the whole room feel softer, warmer. The gentle splash of water and the child’s humming mixed together, filling the apartment with a quiet peace that felt almost like home.
