12 – Not a Serious Rabbit

Mu Mian glanced at the time and realized it was almost six o’clock. Her husband would be home soon, so she decided to go downstairs to wait for him.

“Sister-in-law, why are you downstairs?”

“I’m waiting for my husband to get off work. He said he’d be back by 6.”

“My brother never gets off work that early.” Fu Yifei knew full well that Fu Chenxiu was a workaholic. Sometimes, when he was busy, they could live under the same roof for a week without crossing paths.

But Rabbit was firm: “Husband promised he’d be back at 6! He would never break his promise!”

Just then, the sound of a car came from nearby, and Mu Mian instantly perked up her rabbit ears.

Sensing Fu Chenxiu’s return, Mu Mian immediately dashed toward the entrance: “Husband is back!”

The moment Fu Chenxiu stepped out of the car, he saw a white figure rushing out from the doorway, crashing straight into his arms.

Fu Chenxiu looked down at Mu Mian, who had changed into an outfit that made her look even more like a fluffy rabbit plushie. “Didn’t I tell you not to wait outside for me?”

“Rabbit wasn’t waiting outside the whole time! Rabbit only came out when she smelled husband’s scent!”

Meeting the girl’s sparkling big eyes, Fu Chenxiu remembered she was a rabbit with a sense of smell far superior to ordinary humans.

He patted her head with his large hand and said deeply, “Let’s go inside.”

Seeing Mu Mian and Fu Chenxiu walk in together, Fu Yifei widened his eyes in surprise: “Bro, you really came back from work at six?”

Fu Chenxiu replied flatly, “There wasn’t much to do today.” Implying he had no work matters to attend to, hence returning home at this hour.

Shi Hai, standing behind them: “…” The master really knows how to lie with a straight face.

Fu Yifei blinked. Was there ever a time when their company had nothing to handle? Was their family going bankrupt?

At three in the morning, when all was silent and most people were deep in sleep, a certain rabbit was still staring wide-eyed at the ceiling in a daze.

Why wasn’t she feeling sleepy at all?!

After all, this particular rabbit had certainly never heard the saying: “A cup of tea in the afternoon, staying up until three or four in the morning.”

At this hour… she wondered if her husband was asleep…

Maybe… she should go check?

With that thought, Mu Mian quietly rolled out of bed and tiptoed her way upstairs.

Following her husband’s scent, she found his bedroom and gently pushed the door open.

The curtains in the room were drawn shut, but rabbits have excellent night vision. Mu Mian could roughly make out the room’s layout.

Spotting the figure lying on the large bed, Mu Mian tucked her hands in front of her like a T-Rex, rose onto her tiptoes, and softly approached the bedside.

When she reached the bed, she saw Fu Chenxiu frowning tightly, sweat beading on his forehead, murmuring something in his sleep.

“You shouldn’t have come into this world…”

“You won’t live long anyway! You’ll die at 28!”

“No one in this world will love you. Your so-called fiancée won’t come for you either. No one can save you!”

“Come to hell with me!”

Sensing her husband growing more distressed in his sleep, Mu Mian anxiously shook him: “Husband! Husband!”

Fu Chenxiu jolted awake, his eyes snapping open as he sat up in bed and reached to turn on the lamp on the nightstand. The originally pitch-black bedroom was illuminated by the dim yellow glow of the bedside lamp.

His gaze fell upon the rabbit-eared girl by the bed, her eyes filled with concern as she watched him. Instinctively, he pulled her into his arms and held her tightly.

The man held her with such force, as though afraid she would vanish if he loosened his grip even slightly.

Uncertain why her husband had suddenly embraced her, Mu Mian’s little heart pounded wildly.

After a brief moment of composure loss, Fu Chenxiu regained his senses and gently released her from his embrace.

“Husband, what’s wrong?” Mu Mian stared intently at the man’s face, her voice laced with concern.

Fu Chenxiu steadied his breathing. “It’s nothing.”

“But you seemed so distressed just now. Did you have a nightmare?”

Her husband had indeed appeared as though he’d just experienced a nightmare.

What kind of nightmare could have provoked such a strong reaction from him?

Fu Chenxiu simply responded with a noncommittal “Mm.”

Mu Mian reached out her small hand to pat his back, speaking in a tone one might use to comfort a child: “It’s alright, it’s alright. Nightmares aren’t real, there’s no need to be afraid.”

Fu Chenxiu lowered his gaze, his eyes dark and shadowed. But this nightmare of his… wasn’t false.

When Fu Chenxiu lifted his eyes to look at the girl again, he asked, “Why are you in my room?”

Mu Mian: “!!!”

Coming to a man’s room late at night—would her husband think she wasn’t a proper rabbit?

“I… I heard some noise, so I came up to check.”

Even without the telltale drooping of a certain rabbit’s guilty ears, Fu Chenxiu could immediately tell she was lying.

Still, he ought to thank her.

Fu Chenxiu glanced at the clock on the bedside table. “It’s late. You should return to your room and sleep.”

Mu Mian nodded obediently. “Then you should rest early too, husband.”

With that, Mu Mian left the room.

The nightmare had caused him to sweat profusely, leaving his silk pajamas clinging uncomfortably to his skin.

Fu Chenxiu got out of bed and headed toward the bathroom.

After removing his pajamas and tossing them aside, the perfectly sculpted body revealed various scars of different sizes across his chest and back.

Knife wounds, scars, cigarette burns…

All marks left on him by that woman.

Standing beneath the showerhead, Fu Chenxiu turned the water to its highest setting, letting it cascade over him from head to toe.

Some things could be washed away, while others were far more difficult to cleanse—especially… the shadows of childhood.

The next day, in the CEO’s office of Ye Corporation.

“Sir, I’ve completed the investigation you requested.”

The assistant handed a stack of documents to Ye Jingchuan.

Ye Jingchuan took them and quickly flipped through the pages.

However, even after reaching the final page, he hadn’t found the person he was searching for.

“Is this everything?”

“Yes, these are all the records of people nationwide whose names sound like Mu Mian.”

Hearing this, Ye Jingchuan lowered his gaze, his eyes dimming with disappointment.

Had she not given him her real name?

“Sir, should we continue the investigation?”

Ye Jingchuan tossed the documents into the nearby trash bin. “That won’t be necessary. You may leave.”

The assistant bowed slightly before exiting the office.

A self-mocking smile tugged at Ye Jingchuan’s lips. What was he even doing?

Today, Master Fu was returning from abroad.

He had specifically instructed both Fu Chenxiu and Fu Yifei to remain at home awaiting his arrival.

Mu Mian had changed into a beautiful outfit, and the three of them gathered in the living room, waiting for Master Fu’s return.

Before long, the sound of a car pulling up came from the entrance. Then, an elderly man with graying hair, leaning on a cane but radiating an extraordinary presence, walked in.

As soon as he entered, he urgently asked, “Where is he? Where is the child?”
