Wen Zhiyu’s heart tightened.

Hearing Senior Brother Song’s question, Wen Zhiyu couldn’t help but smile.

“Senior Brother, I already made myself very clear on the phone. Captain Shen and I are not compatible, and I won’t accept someone I don’t like and who isn’t right for me.”Full novel: The Delicate Young Woman Insisted on Going to Accompany the Army and the Abstinent Tycoon Fell for Her — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Senior Brother Song nodded.

If the other junior brothers and sisters knew about this, they would probably be delighted. But seeing that Wen Zhiyu had no thoughts of marriage at her age, he couldn’t help worrying about her.

For a woman to live alone in this world was never easy.

Still, his junior sister was outstanding. Since Shen Lifeng could not win her favor, he certainly couldn’t force her.

Outside the door, Shen Lifeng stood frozen, almost like a block of ice, unable to say a word.

Just then, the consultation room door opened.

“Comrade Shen!”

A young nurse came hurrying over, panting slightly. She stopped in front of Shen Lifeng, her eyes shining with admiration.

The nurse was obviously shy. The words reached her lips, but she lowered her head again. Her fingers twisted together nervously, nearly bending themselves out of shape.

“Do you need something?” Shen Lifeng asked, forcing himself to stay composed after being rejected by the woman he loved.

“Comrade Shen, I made this lunch myself. I… I’d like to get to know you and build a revolutionary friendship. Would… would you be willing to accept me?”

The nurse blinked, her eyes fixed entirely on Shen Lifeng.

Shen Lifeng froze.

At that moment, Wen Zhiyu stepped out of the consultation room and happened to see the two facing each other.

She frowned slightly.

The nurse was timid and weak-willed. Whether she was worthy of Shen Lifeng or not wasn’t the issue—they simply weren’t suited to each other.

The nurse visibly startled when she noticed Wen Zhiyu.

Wen Zhiyu was quite famous in the hospital. A small number of people knew about the relationship between her and Shen Lifeng, but apparently this nurse did not.

After the surprise came embarrassment.

Still, she didn’t think she had done anything wrong.

If you liked something, shouldn’t you fight for it?

“I’m sorry,” Shen Lifeng said. “I already have a fiancée, and I love her very much.”

His gaze settled on Wen Zhiyu, but he quickly looked away, not wanting to make her uncomfortable.

The nurse’s already flushed face turned even redder.

“I… I understand. Thank you, Comrade Shen.”

Just as suddenly as she had arrived, she turned and left.

Wen Zhiyu didn’t ask what Shen Lifeng had meant. She merely greeted him politely and walked away.

Senior Brother Song followed behind.

Patting Shen Lifeng on the shoulder, he said,

“Comrade Shen, my junior sister studied in the capital before. I don’t know how many men confessed to her, and not a single one succeeded. I think you should probably give up.”

As Doctor Song passed him, Shen Lifeng clenched his fist.

Give up?

From the first moment he saw Wen Zhiyu, he had been drawn to her.

He felt that giving up was probably impossible.

Wen Zhiyu and Senior Brother Song went on their ward rounds together. She also wanted him to see the poverty and hardship here firsthand.

Senior Brother Song clicked his tongue repeatedly.

“The equipment here is so outdated. Unless someone like you is here, even the best medical skills wouldn’t be enough. Hospitals deal with life and death—how can things be handled so carelessly?”

But he knew Wen Zhiyu wouldn’t bring him here without reason.

When they reached the other end of the corridor, he asked,

“Junior Sister, tell me. What exactly do you want to do?”

Wen Zhiyu answered directly.

“Senior Brother, our laboratory has a lot of discarded machines. They’re obsolete to us, but here they’re lifesaving tools. I was thinking… why don’t we write to our teacher and ask him to send the equipment here?”

More importantly, she wanted Senior Brother Song to write the letter.

If this had happened in the past, she would have written it herself.

But when she graduated, their teacher had wanted her to stay at the university or in the laboratory. She refused and ran away instead. Their teacher was probably still angry with her.

“Alright.”

Senior Brother Song knew a little about that incident.

Seeing him agree, Wen Zhiyu smiled and hugged him.

“I knew it! Senior Brother Song is truly compassionate. You can’t bear to see patients suffer.”

“It is compassion,” he replied. “But how many people can we really help?”

Watching patients receive less than the best treatment, watching these heroes of the desert treated this way, he felt conflicted.

Because it probably wasn’t only here.

Who knew how many deserving people elsewhere were also being neglected?

“Doctor Wen!”

Just as the two were lost in gloomy thoughts, a patient suddenly approached carrying a large piece of meat.

The moment he reached Wen Zhiyu, he shoved the meat into her hands.

“What are you doing?!”

Wen Zhiyu stared in shock.

The patient smiled broadly. His eyes burned with enthusiasm as he looked at her, but instead of explaining, he turned around and left.

Wen Zhiyu frowned.

What was this man trying to do?

“Take your meat back!”

She hurried after him to return it, but the man slipped away like an eel and disappeared.

Only Wen Zhiyu and Senior Brother Song remained, completely confused.

Not long after leaving, the patient met up with his mother outside.

Zheng Songhua had only one son.

When he became gravely ill, she thought he was doomed. Then he happened to be treated by Wen Zhiyu and recovered.

Zheng Songhua had been watching Wen Zhiyu for quite some time.

Wen Zhiyu was beautiful, had a good personality, was a doctor, and surely earned a decent salary.

She wanted Wen Zhiyu as her daughter-in-law!

“Mom, I already gave her the meat. She accepted it. That means she’s my wife now!”

Dalei grinned foolishly.

He liked a wife like Wen Zhiyu.

After marriage, he even imagined hearing her call out in bed.

Her voice already sounded pleasant when she spoke with a serious expression. It would sound even better in bed.

Thinking about it, Dalei laughed stupidly.

Doctor Wen was truly beautiful!

After hearing Wen Zhiyu’s rejection, Shen Lifeng felt somewhat awkward.

To avoid making her uncomfortable, he stayed in the dormitory handling official work for the time being.

But early the next morning, one of his subordinates came rushing in.

“Battalion Commander! Something’s happened to Comrade Wen. A mother and son have shown up beating gongs and drums, claiming they’re here to marry Comrade Wen. They say she accepted their betrothal gift.”

Shen Lifeng immediately sprang into action.

By the time he reached Wen Zhiyu’s consultation room, only two or three minutes had passed.

Just in time to hear the old woman’s arrogant voice.

“You already accepted our betrothal gift, so why are you pretending? That was a huge piece of meat! Our family wouldn’t even dare eat that much in an entire year!”

Wen Zhiyu sneered.

A crowd had gathered around them.

Some people pointed out that the old woman was dreaming and had no evidence to support her claims against Doctor Wen.

Although they spoke in Wen Zhiyu’s defense, no one dared intervene physically.

At least for the moment, the old woman couldn’t get close to Wen Zhiyu.

“Wife, just marry me! I’ll treat you well. I’ll make sure you enjoy yourself in bed too!”

The fat man, still wearing his hospital gown, grinned lecherously.

His eyes lingered on Wen Zhiyu’s chest, as if he wanted to see through her white coat.

Wen Zhiyu frowned.

Her hands itched to hit someone.

Suddenly, a figure shot out from the crowd.

One hand grabbed the fat man’s hair and slammed his head against the wall.

“Oww! Oww!”

The fat man cried out in pain.
