Xue Lihua arrived at the Leng estate nineteen minutes later.

Security removed her phone, weapons and storage rings at the outer gate.

She surrendered each item without protest.Full novel: THE DEVIL’S MANUSCRIPT — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

That concerned Feng Baoshu more than resistance would have.

“She knows,” he said.

Leng Yao watched the security feed from the command room.

Xue stood between four Houshan guards.

Her dark hair was tied back, and her grey suit remained neat despite the search.

“She suspects,” Leng Yao said.

“That is not the same thing?”

“No.”

Someone who knew she had been exposed would run.

Xue had returned.

Either she believed she could still deceive him, or she had nowhere safer to go.

The command-room doors opened.

Two guards escorted her inside.

Bai Qingyu stood near the main display with Doctor Ren.

She had refused to enter the underground chamber until someone explained why twelve dead ancestors were considered suitable protection.

Leng Yao had not explained.

Xue noticed Bai Qingyu first.

Her gaze paused on the blind woman’s cane, then moved to Leng Yao.

“You recalled me.”

“Yes.”

“Is this about the regional Chosen?”

“It is about you.”

The guards moved towards Xue’s arms.

Leng Yao raised one hand.

They stepped back.

Xue looked around the room.

Armed soldiers.

Active formations.

Feng Baoshu near the only exit.

She remained calm.

“What do you want to know?”

“Who receives your reports?”

Her expression did not change.

“I submit reports to the intelligence archive.”

“Try again.”

Silence followed.

Bai Qingyu tilted her head.

“Her heartbeat changed.”

Xue glanced at her.

Bai Qingyu added, “Now it changed again.”

“Enough,” Leng Yao said.

Bai Qingyu tapped her cane against the floor.

Xue faced him.

“How long have you known?”

“Since before Minghe.”

That was not an answer.

It was enough.

Xue released a slow breath.

“Song Zhen.”

Feng Baoshu entered the name into the system.

“Occupation?”

“Consultant.”

“For whom?”

“The Shen family.”

“Directly?”

“No.”

“Who is above him?”

“I don’t know.”

Leng Yao activated the fragment inside his palm.

Dark lines appeared around Xue.

One connected her to the Leng intelligence division.

Another extended east, thin and unstable.

Song Zhen.

A third ran towards a hospital in central Shanghai.

That line was stronger than the others.

“What is at Fusheng Hospital?” Leng Yao asked.

Xue’s composure broke.

Only for a moment.

“My mother.”

Feng Baoshu looked up from the tablet.

“Renal meridian failure.

Private treatment ward.”

Xue turned towards him.

“You searched quickly.”

“We pay for your insurance.”

“The treatment is not covered.”

“No,” Feng Baoshu said.

“The Shen family pays for it.”

Xue said nothing.

Leng Yao released the fragment.

The lines vanished.

“How long?”

“Four years.”

“You joined us five years ago.”

“Yes.”

“So they recruited you after.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“My mother’s treatment became more expensive.”

“And Song Zhen offered to pay.”

“He offered access to a physician.”

“In exchange for information.”

Xue’s jaw tightened.

“At first, only market reports.”

“Then personnel records.”

“Yes.”

“Then security routes.”

“Yes.”

Feng Baoshu’s face hardened.

Three Houshan officers had died after one of those routes reached the Shen faction.

Xue knew it.

She kept her eyes on Leng Yao.

“Did you arrange the kidnapping?” he asked.

“No.”

“Did you know Hou Yuxin would be taken?”

“I knew someone was watching her.”

“You said nothing.”

“I reported that you had visited Hou Shengmin.”

“That was not my question.”

Xue looked down.

“Yes.”

The single word carried more weight than an excuse would have.

Feng Baoshu stepped towards her.

“You allowed a child to be taken.”

“I thought the Shen family intended to pressure Hou Shengmin.”

“They put a knife against her neck.”

“I did not know that would happen.”

“You made sure no one else knew anything would happen.”

Xue accepted that without defending herself.

Leng Yao watched her.

“Why did you return?”

Her eyes lifted.

“You ordered me to.”

“You knew something was wrong.”

“Yes.”

“You could have gone to Song Zhen.”

“He would kill my mother before helping me escape.”

“At least you understand your employer.”

Xue’s mouth tightened.

“You are also my employer.”

“No.”

Leng Yao stepped closer.

“I am the man you have been betraying.”

The command-room lights dimmed as another formation activated outside.

A warning appeared on the central display.

MANDATE DISTURBANCE DETECTED

DISTANCE: 191 KILOMETRES

Ji Xueyan was still approaching.

They had time.

Not much.

Leng Yao looked back at Xue.

“Song Zhen believes the medicinal spring is repairing my core.”

“Yes.”

“He believes Bai Qingyu accepted my protection willingly.”

“Yes.”

“He believes the Seven Aperture Eye is under my control.”

“Yes.”

“Keep telling him that.”

Xue stared at him.

“You want me to continue reporting.”

“Yes.”

“You cannot trust me.”

“I don’t.”

“Then why?”

“Because Song Zhen does.”

Feng Baoshu folded his arms.

“For now.”

Xue understood the warning.

“What happens to my mother?”

“She is moved today.”

“Where?”

“You do not need to know.”

Her expression sharpened.

“I need proof she is safe.”

“You will receive it.”

“And her physician?”

“We will keep him.”

“The Shen family owns his contract.”

“I own the hospital’s debt.”

Feng Baoshu looked at Leng Yao.

“When did that happen?”

“Three hours ago.”

“You bought the hospital?”

“The debt.”

“That is not the same thing.”

“It will be.”

Xue stared at him.

“You planned this before calling me.”

“I planned several outcomes.”

“And if I lied?”

“You would not leave this room.”

Bai Qingyu shifted slightly.

Xue looked towards her.

“Does that bother you?”

Bai Qingyu considered the question.

“You helped people kidnap a girl.”

“I gave them information.”

“That is how helping works.”

Xue accepted the answer.

Leng Yao returned to the main display.

“Song Zhen will notice.”

“Tell him I am becoming suspicious.”

“He may order me to run.”

“Do not.”

“He may order me to kill someone.”

“Tell us first.”

“And if he threatens my mother?”

“He will discover she is gone.”

Xue’s voice lowered.

“He will know I failed.”

“Yes.”

“You are forcing him to choose between abandoning me and exposing himself.”

“Yes.”

For the first time, something close to understanding appeared in her eyes.

Not gratitude.

Relief was too generous.

She had spent four years trapped between two organisations.

Leng Yao had not freed her.

He had simply changed which side controlled the trap.

“Take her to the eastern wing,” he told Feng Baoshu.

Xue did not move.

“What happens after this?”

“That depends on what you do.”

“And what do you want me to do?”

“Your job.”

“My real one?”

Leng Yao met her gaze.

“Decide which one that is.”

The guards escorted her from the room.

Feng Baoshu remained.

“You are giving her a choice?”

“No.”

“It sounded like one.”

“She can work for us or die.”

“That is technically a choice.”

Bai Qingyu approached them.

“Will you kill her?”

“If she betrays us again.”

“She already betrayed you.”

“Yes.”

“Then why is she alive?”

“She is useful.”

Bai Qingyu turned towards the closed doors.

“That answer explains too much about you.”

Before Leng Yao could respond, the estate alarm changed.

The warning tone became a single continuous note.

A Houshan officer spoke from the communications desk.

“Target accelerated.”

The map enlarged.

Ji Xueyan’s vehicle had left the motorway.

The golden signal was no longer following the road.

It moved directly towards the estate.

Through buildings.

Across rivers.

Over the city.

Feng Baoshu stared at the display.

“She is flying.”

“No,” Leng Yao said.

The golden point crossed twenty kilometres in less than a minute.

“Heaven is moving her.”

The correction system appeared.

Regional Judgement initiated.

Prepare for sentencing.

The timer vanished.

Every defensive formation around the estate activated.

Soldiers moved into position.

The artificial lake darkened as the array beneath it awakened.

Black pillars rose from the water, each carrying enough spiritual energy to destroy a small sect.

Bai Qingyu faced the western wall.

“She is here.”

A silver spear struck the estate barrier.

The impact split the sky.

Golden light spread across the formation dome.

Cracks appeared.

Houshan soldiers raised their weapons.

The second strike did not come.

A woman’s voice carried through the barrier.

“Leng Yao.”

No shouting.

No spiritual amplification.

Everyone on the estate heard her.

“I am here to investigate a Mandate violation.”

Feng Baoshu looked towards Leng Yao.

“She said investigate.”

“The system said sentencing.”

“That is a useful disagreement.”

Leng Yao left the command room.

Bai Qingyu followed.

“Stay here.”

“No.”

“Your inheritance is part of the investigation.”

“That is why I am coming.”

Feng Baoshu joined them.

“I assume telling both of you to remain inside would be pointless.”

“Yes,” they answered together.

He sighed.

Ji Xueyan waited outside the western gate.

She stood alone.

Her white coat had been torn along one sleeve, and blood ran from her left hand.

The system’s forced acceleration had not carried her gently.

The long silver spear rested against her shoulder.

Golden characters moved along its blade.

Houshan cultivators watched her from the walls.

Formation weapons followed every breath she took.

She did not appear concerned.

Leng Yao stopped on the other side of the barrier.

“You arrived early.”

“Not by choice.”

“Your system moved you.”

“Yes.”

She answered without hesitation.

That made Feng Baoshu look at her more carefully.

Ji examined the barrier.

“Lower it.”

“No.”

“I could break it.”

“You would have done so already.”

Her eyes narrowed.

Leng Yao continued.

“You came to investigate.

We can speak through the barrier.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“My authority cannot cross it.”

“Then leave the authority outside.”

“I cannot.”

“That sounds inconvenient.”

“It is.”

Bai Qingyu stepped beside Leng Yao.

Ji looked at her cloudy eyes.

“Bai Qingyu.”

“Yes.”

“The Seven Aperture Eye chose you?”

“My grandfather chose me.”

“That was not the question.”

“The inheritance accepted me.”

“Did Leng Yao force the bond?”

“No.”

“Did he influence your decision?”

“He tried to keep the pendant.”

Leng Yao glanced at her.

Bai Qingyu continued.

“I took it anyway.”

Ji studied her for several seconds.

Golden light passed through her irises.

The spear’s characters shifted.

TESTIMONY ACCEPTED

Ji looked at Leng Yao.

“She believes what she said.”

“That does not make it true,” he replied.

“No.”

That answer mattered.

Judgement could confirm sincerity.

Not fact.

Leng Yao lowered the outer barrier.

Only the outer barrier.

Six more remained beneath it.

Ji walked through the gate.

Houshan soldiers closed around her.

She handed her spear to no one.

Feng Baoshu gestured towards the main residence.

“This way.”

“I will hold the hearing here.”

“In the road?”

“Yes.”

Ji drove the end of her spear into the stone.

Golden light spread from the impact.

A circle formed around them, thirty metres wide.

Characters rose along its edge.

The Houshan soldiers inside the circle were pushed out.

Only five people remained.

Ji Xueyan.

Leng Yao.

Feng Baoshu.

Bai Qingyu.

And Xue Lihua.

She stood near the eastern path, still escorted by two guards when the golden circle formed beneath her.

The guards were forced outside.

Xue remained within it.

Ji looked at her.

“You are the report’s source.”

Xue’s face went still.

Ji turned towards Leng Yao.

“You brought her here.”

“I recalled her before you arrived.”

“Why?”

“She works for me.”

“And the Shen family.”

“Yes.”

Ji noticed.

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

“Before she filed the report?”

“Yes.”

Ji’s system window appeared beside her.

Leng Yao could not see its words, but he felt the Mandate react.

It did not like that answer.

Ji gripped the spear.

“This boundary records deliberate falsehoods.”

“What happens when someone lies?” Feng Baoshu asked.

“The lie becomes evidence against them.”

“Evidence of what?”

“Intent.”

“That is broad.”

“It has to be.”

Ji looked towards Leng Yao.

“You are accused of stealing Mandate authority.”

“I did.”

The golden circle brightened.

No reaction followed.

Truth.

“Interfering with Shen Mingzhi’s awakening.”

“Yes.”

“Corrupting the Seven Aperture Eye.”

“No.”

The circle remained still.

Ji glanced at Bai Qingyu.

“Did he alter the inheritance?”

“He removed Heaven’s claim.”

“Did that damage it?”

“I don’t know.”

“Can you use it?”

“Once.

Sometimes.”

Bai Qingyu’s answer was accepted.

Ji continued.

“You obstructed the Administration’s seizure of White Crane Clinic.”

“Yes,” Leng Yao said.

“You attacked Inspector Lu Jinhai.”

“He attacked first.”

The circle flashed once.

Not a lie.

Not the full truth either.

Ji recognised the difference.

“You expected him to attack.”

“Yes.”

“You provoked him.”

“I asked him to prove his claim.”

“That was enough.”

“For Heaven.”

Ji’s grip tightened around the spear.

The correction system appeared before Leng Yao.

Judgement conditions established.

Confession recorded.

Execution authorised.

Ji’s system had reached the same conclusion.

She looked towards empty air.

“No.”

The golden circle trembled.

Bai Qingyu turned towards her.

“Who are you speaking to?”

“My system.”

“What does it want?”

“To execute him.”

Feng Baoshu shifted closer to Leng Yao.

Ji raised one hand.

“I have not finished.”

Golden characters appeared above the circle.

MANDATE VIOLATION CONFIRMED

VERDICT: ERASURE

Ji looked up.

“I said I have not finished.”

The characters remained.

The spear pulled against her hand, turning towards Leng Yao.

She forced it back into the ground.

Blood opened across her palm.

Leng Yao watched the authority around her.

Dark lines appeared when he activated the fragment.

One connected Ji to the spear.

One connected her to the Judgement authority.

A third descended from the sky and wrapped around both.

The first two lines belonged to her.

The third did not.

Heaven was not giving her a verdict.

It was attempting to use her authority to deliver its own.

“Xue Lihua,” Ji said.

Xue straightened.

“Did Leng Yao order you to submit the report about White Crane Clinic?”

“No.”

The circle accepted the answer.

“Did he provide the information?”

“He gave me access to the file.”

“Did he know you would report it?”

Xue hesitated.

“I believe so.”

The circle remained still.

Belief, not fact.

Ji looked at Leng Yao.

“Did you?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To control where you investigated.”

“White Crane Clinic.”

“Yes.”

“But I came here.”

“You recognised the report as bait.”

Ji’s expression hardened.

“You wanted to test me.”

“Yes.”

“And if I had attacked the clinic?”

“We would have been waiting.”

Bai Qingyu turned towards him.

“We?”

“Not now.”

“You used my clinic as bait.”

“It is heavily defended.”

“It still has no roof.”

Ji interrupted.

“Did you steal the Claim authority from the regional seal?”

“A fragment.”

“Why?”

“It attacked me.”

“You could have withdrawn.”

“Yes.”

“You chose not to.”

“Yes.”

The golden verdict above them brightened.

Ji closed her eyes.

Her system spoke aloud.

Chosen host hesitation detected.

Judgement authority override initiated.

The spear tore free of the ground.

Ji caught it with both hands.

Its blade swung towards Leng Yao.

Feng Baoshu moved.

Leng Yao stopped him.

“Wait.”

Ji fought the weapon.

The muscles in her arms trembled.

Golden cracks spread beneath her feet.

“I have not reached a verdict,” she said.

Verdict predetermined.

“Then this is not Judgement.”

The authority around her faltered.

The dark line connecting Ji to the spear thickened.

The line descending from Heaven tightened in response.

Chosen host exists to enforce Mandate law.

“I enforce my judgement.”

Your judgement is subordinate.

Ji’s eyes opened.

Silver light replaced the gold inside them.

“No.”

The spear stopped moving.

The golden verdict fractured above the circle.

Leng Yao’s fragment reacted.

Authority-owner conflict detected.

Natural ownership: Ji Xueyan.

External claim: Heavenly Mandate.

Heaven was attempting to do to Ji what it had done to Bai Qingyu’s inheritance.

Claim something that naturally belonged to another person.

Ji pulled the spear back.

The word ERASURE shattered.

The circle went dark.

For one second, the estate became silent.

Then Ji’s system issued a new message.

This one appeared for everyone to see.

REGIONAL CHOSEN NONCOMPLIANT

JUDGEMENT AUTHORITY REASSIGNMENT INITIATED

Golden chains emerged from the sky.

They wrapped around Ji’s arms, throat and spear.

She dropped to one knee.

The authority inside her began to tear free.

Bai Qingyu took a step forward.

“What is happening?”

Leng Yao opened his inverted core.

“Heaven is replacing her.”

Ji looked up at him.

“Do not interfere.”

“Why?”

“This is my punishment.”

“No.”

The black mark spread across Leng Yao’s palm.

Darkness climbed his wrist.

“You came here to judge whether I was permitted to exist.”

Golden energy gathered around his hand.

“Now I will decide the same for you.”

The chains tightened.

Ji’s scream shook the estate.

Above them, a new line appeared.

SUCCESSOR CANDIDATE SELECTED.

TRANSFER COMMENCING.
