Golden chains tightened around Ji Xueyan.

One wrapped around her throat.

Two pinned her arms to her sides.Full novel: THE DEVIL’S MANUSCRIPT — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

The remaining chains entered her chest.

Silver light tore free.

Ji’s spear struck the ground as her grip weakened.

Above the estate, golden words burned across the sky.

SUCCESSOR CANDIDATE SELECTED.

TRANSFER COMMENCING.

Leng Yao activated the fragment in his palm.

Dark lines appeared.

Ji remained connected to the spear and the Judgement authority.

Those bonds were thick, formed through years of use.

The chains descending from Heaven were different.

They did not connect.

They pierced.

Leng Yao followed them towards the successor.

The lines ended at Xue Lihua.

She stared at the golden mark forming above her heart.

“What is this?”

The correction system answered aloud.

Compatible vessel confirmed.

Xue Lihua.

Loyalty compromised.

Moral conflict present.

Judgement compatibility: seventy-one percent.

Xue stepped back.

The golden circle moved with her.

Ji forced her head up.

“Leave the boundary.”

Xue tried.

An invisible wall stopped her.

The mark on her chest brightened.

Images entered her mind.

Leng Yao saw them in the reflection of the Judgement circle.

Prisoners.

Criminals.

Cultivators kneeling before Ji Xueyan.

Verdicts delivered across ruined villages and sect halls.

Thousands of decisions compressed into seconds.

Xue grabbed her head.

“Make it stop.”

Accept authority.

Assume regional mandate.

Complete erasure of irregular entity.

Another line appeared.

Reward: full restoration of Lin Meizhen.

Xue froze.

Her mother.

Heaven had found the same weakness the Shen family used.

Leng Yao looked at her.

“Do not answer yet.”

Xue’s breathing became uneven.

“It can cure her.”

“Perhaps.”

“It knows her name.”

“So did Song Zhen.”

“This is different.”

“Yes.”

The correction system spoke again.

Renal meridians restored upon acceptance.

Medical debt removed.

Threats against Lin Meizhen eliminated.

Feng Baoshu moved towards Xue.

The golden boundary threw him backwards.

He landed on one knee outside the circle.

Bai Qingyu gripped her cane.

“Can it force her?”

“No,” Leng Yao said.

“Then why is she shaking?”

“Because it does not need force.”

The golden chains pulled again.

More silver light left Ji’s body.

Her spear began to lose its colour.

The characters along the blade disappeared one by one.

Ji’s face had gone pale.

“Let it transfer,” she said.

Leng Yao looked at her.

“You will lose the authority.”

“That is better than dying.”

“The chains are inside your heart.”

Ji did not answer.

She already knew.

The transfer would not leave her alive.

Heaven was not removing a position.

It was removing evidence of disobedience.

Xue looked from Ji to the golden words above her.

“If I accept, does she live?”

The system paused.

Previous vessel no longer required.

“That means no,” Bai Qingyu said.

Xue closed her eyes.

Her mother’s face appeared inside the golden circle.

She lay in a hospital bed, thin and unconscious.

A physician stood beside her.

Song Zhen waited at the door.

The image changed.

Xue saw her mother awake.

Healthy.

Smiling.

It was not a memory.

It was a promise.

The system spoke softly.

Accept.

Leng Yao recognised the method.

Heaven had not controlled the pawnshop attackers.

It had shown them the thing they wanted and removed enough doubt to make the lie usable.

Now it was doing the same to Xue.

The black mark in his palm reacted.

Existing desire: save Lin Meizhen.

Mandate influence: consequence suppression.

Xue could see the reward.

She could no longer feel the cost.

“Xue,” Leng Yao said.

She did not look at him.

“My mother has four months.”

“She has longer.”

“You cannot know that.”

“I moved her.”

Her eyes opened.

“What?”

“Fusheng Hospital no longer has her.”

“Where is she?”

“Safe.”

“You said you would move her today.”

“I did.”

“When?”

“Before you arrived.”

Xue looked at Feng Baoshu.

He nodded.

“Doctor Ren’s team collected her.”

The image inside the Judgement circle flickered.

The hospital bed became empty.

Song Zhen entered the room and found no one.

The promised future changed.

Heaven’s offer remained.

Its leverage did not.

Location irrelevant.

Acceptance guarantees restoration.

Xue faced Leng Yao.

“Can you cure her?”

“No.”

The answer landed cleanly.

No promise.

No comfort.

“Then it is still offering more than you are.”

“Yes.”

“Why should I refuse?”

“Because it will kill Ji.”

Xue looked at the woman on her knees.

“I don’t know her.”

“No.”

“And she came here to kill you.”

“Yes.”

“Then why are you helping her?”

Leng Yao watched the authority being torn from Ji’s body.

“Because the decision should be yours.”

Xue’s expression changed.

He had not said Ji deserved to live.

He had not said Heaven was evil.

Only that Xue should understand what she was choosing.

The suppression around her weakened.

Not enough to vanish.

Enough for guilt to return.

Ji forced one hand against the chains.

“Do not refuse for me.”

Xue looked at her.

“You would let it kill you?”

“I accepted this authority.”

“Did you accept obedience?”

“No.”

“Then why should disobedience kill you?”

Ji had no answer.

Bai Qingyu moved closer to the boundary.

Seven black rings formed around her pupils.

She studied the chains.

“There is a knot behind her heart.”

“Ji’s?” Leng Yao asked.

“Yes.”

“And Xue?”

“One above hers.”

The golden mark.

Two points held the transfer together.

The source entering Xue.

The claim leaving Ji.

Bai Qingyu’s hand tightened around her cane.

“I have one strike.”

“Use it on Xue’s mark.”

Xue stepped back.

“What happens to me?”

“I don’t know,” Bai Qingyu said.

“That is not reassuring.”

“It is honest.”

The system reacted.

Interference prohibited.

Golden pressure descended on Bai Qingyu.

She dropped to one knee.

Blood ran from her eyes.

Leng Yao stepped between her and the chains.

The pressure struck him.

His inverted core opened.

Gold flooded his meridians.

The fractures inside his core pulled at it, but there was too much.

His skin split along his forearm.

Feng Baoshu struck the boundary from outside.

The golden wall did not move.

“Young Master.”

“Stay out.”

“You are bleeding again.”

“I noticed.”

“That answer remains useless.”

Leng Yao reached for the chain connected to Ji’s chest.

The moment he touched it, Judgement entered him.

He saw his own history.

A burning estate.

Bodies beneath winter trees.

Men executed on his orders.

Territories seized.

Families ruined because they stood between him and power.

The authority did not accuse him.

It measured him.

Every decision.

Every consequence.

The weight pushed him to one knee.

Golden words appeared.

LENG YAO

Confirmed killings: 1,382.

Indirect deaths: unresolved.

Acts of mercy: 47.

Primary motive: control.

Moral classification: hostile.

Bai Qingyu glanced at the words.

“That is a large number.”

“Not now.”

Ji looked at him through half-closed eyes.

“Judgement does not care whether you like the result.”

“It should care who reaches it.”

He pulled the chain.

It did not move.

The correction system spoke.

Irregular entity has no standing.

The Claim fragment answered.

Dark text formed over Leng Yao’s hand.

Active ownership recognised.

Authority bearer: Ji Xueyan.

External claim disputed.

The golden chain shook.

Leng Yao looked at Ji.

“Claim it.”

She struggled to breathe.

“It came from Heaven.”

“Does the spear obey Heaven?”

“No.”

“Does Judgement?”

Her eyes moved towards Xue.

The transfer continued.

“Not always.”

“Then claim it.”

Ji’s face hardened.

“I am Ji Xueyan.”

Nothing changed.

Bai Qingyu raised her cane.

“That is not enough.”

Ji looked at her.

“It worked for you.”

“I had a deed.”

Despite the pain, Feng Baoshu laughed outside the circle.

Ji almost did.

Almost.

Then she looked at the silver spear beside her.

She had received it at sixteen.

Not from Heaven.

From her teacher.

The Judgement authority had awakened later, after Ji refused to execute a village accused of sheltering demonic cultivators.

She had investigated first.

The village had been innocent.

Heaven had rewarded her decision.

Or claimed it.

Ji understood the difference now.

She closed her hand around the spear.

“This weapon is mine.”

The silver characters returned along its blade.

The chains tightened.

Ji continued.

“My decisions are mine.”

Judgement light gathered inside her chest.

The transfer slowed.

“My authority is mine.”

The golden chain stopped.

The correction system responded.

Authority granted by Heavenly Mandate.

Ji forced herself upright.

“Then take back what you gave.”

Silver light erupted around her.

“But you do not take what I built.”

The chain inside her chest cracked.

At the same moment, Bai Qingyu moved.

Her cane struck the mark above Xue’s heart.

The golden symbol shattered.

Xue screamed.

Judgement energy surged into her body, found no claim to hold it and reversed.

It returned to Ji.

The force lifted her from the ground.

Silver light spread across the entire estate.

Leng Yao still held the chain.

The returning authority passed through his hand.

His Claim fragment pulled at the golden layer wrapped around it.

Natural Judgement returned to Ji.

Heaven’s ownership remained in Leng Yao’s grip.

The correction system realised too late.

Release administrative claim.

Leng Yao’s fingers closed.

“No.”

His inverted core pulled.

The golden chain entered his palm.

It burned through his arm and struck his core.

Three fractures opened at once.

He tasted blood.

The Claim fragment swallowed the first section.

The second resisted.

The third wrapped around his heart.

Unauthorized authority theft.

Lethal correction initiated.

Darkness erupted from his core.

Gold and black collided inside his chest.

Leng Yao remained conscious long enough to see Ji’s chains break.

Then the world went dark.

He awoke on the road.

Feng Baoshu knelt beside him.

Bai Qingyu sat nearby with blood covering the lower half of her face.

Ji Xueyan stood at the centre of the ruined Judgement circle.

Xue Lihua lay at her feet.

Alive.

Leng Yao sat up.

Pain spread through his chest.

“How long?”

“Forty seconds,” Feng Baoshu said.

“That is acceptable.”

“No.”

Leng Yao looked at his palm.

The original Claim mark remained.

A second symbol now rested beside it.

A black scale.

One side was empty.

The other held a small golden flame.

Dark text appeared.

Authority fragment acquired: Judgement Claim.

Current capability: identify imposed verdicts.

Not Judgement itself.

Only the part Heaven had used to claim ownership over it.

Useful.

Dangerous.

Earned.

Ji picked up her spear.

The blade was silver again, though several characters remained dark.

Her authority had changed.

So had her system.

A cracked golden window floated beside her.

REGIONAL CHOSEN STATUS: SUSPENDED

AUTHORITY RECOVERY FAILED

MANDATE CONNECTION UNSTABLE

Ji read it without reacting.

Xue regained consciousness.

She touched the place where the golden mark had been.

“My mother.”

Feng Baoshu handed her a phone.

A live video filled the screen.

Lin Meizhen slept inside a private medical room.

Doctor Ren stood beside her bed.

Xue watched for several seconds.

Then she lowered the phone.

“She is still sick.”

“Yes,” Leng Yao said.

He did not apologise.

Xue looked at Ji.

“I almost accepted.”

“Yes,” Ji replied.

“You would have died.”

“Yes.”

Xue’s fingers tightened around the phone.

“I knew that.”

“Not fully.”

“That does not excuse it.”

“No.”

Ji offered no forgiveness.

Xue had not asked for any.

The broken Judgement boundary disappeared.

Houshan soldiers rushed forward.

Feng Baoshu ordered them back.

Ji approached Leng Yao.

“You stole part of my authority.”

“No.”

“The mark on your hand says otherwise.”

“I stole Heaven’s claim over it.”

“That distinction matters to you?”

“It should matter to you.”

Ji looked at the black scale.

Her system tried to identify it.

The window flickered and failed.

“You interfered in a lawful transfer.”

“It was an execution.”

“You do not know that.”

“You were dying.”

Ji said nothing.

Leng Yao stood.

His legs almost failed.

Feng Baoshu caught his arm.

Leng Yao removed it.

Ji drove her spear into the ground again.

No boundary formed.

The authority now waited for her decision rather than beginning it automatically.

She faced Leng Yao.

“This hearing is not complete.”

“You attempted to execute me.”

“My system did.”

“You brought it here.”

“I did.”

Bai Qingyu wiped blood from her chin.

“Are you both going to argue until another chain appears?”

“No,” Ji said.

She looked at Leng Yao.

“I have a verdict.”

Feng Baoshu moved closer.

Houshan weapons targeted her from the walls.

Ji ignored them.

“Leng Yao knowingly interfered with Mandate events.”

“Yes,” Leng Yao said.

“He stole Heavenly energy.”

“Yes.”

“He obstructed the allocation of resources.”

“Yes.”

“He manipulated an intelligence asset to misdirect an investigation.”

Xue looked away.

“Yes,” Leng Yao said.

Ji tightened her grip on the spear.

“He is guilty.”

Golden light moved across the blade.

Feng Baoshu prepared to attack.

Ji continued.

“But guilt does not justify erasure.”

The light turned silver.

“Sentence suspended.”

The correction system appeared.

Invalid verdict.

Ji looked at it.

“My authority.”

The window cracked further.

She faced Leng Yao again.

“I will continue investigating you.”

“You are welcome to try.”

“I will stay at this estate.”

“No.”

Ji’s expression did not change.

“You damaged my Mandate connection.”

“You attacked my home.”

“I cannot return to the Northern Purity Temple until I understand what happened.”

“That is not my problem.”

“You are the cause.”

“Part of the cause.”

Bai Qingyu raised one hand.

“She can have the room beside mine.”

Leng Yao looked at her.

“You do not assign rooms.”

“I was assigned one.”

“That is different.”

“It is not.”

Feng Baoshu rubbed his forehead.

“I will arrange accommodation.”

Ji pulled her spear free.

“I do not require comfort.”

“You will receive a bed,” Feng Baoshu said.

“We are not barbarians.”

Leng Yao looked at him.

Feng Baoshu added, “Most days.”

Xue pushed herself upright.

“What happens to me?”

Leng Yao faced her.

“You continue your reports.”

“After this?”

“Especially after this.”

“What do I tell Song Zhen?”

“The regional Chosen reached a verdict.”

Ji looked at him.

“She did not execute me.”

Xue understood.

“The Shen family will assume you influenced her.”

“They will.”

“And Heaven?”

Ji glanced at the broken system window.

“It already knows.”

The correction system returned one final time.

Its voice had lost the calm certainty it once carried.

Regional Judgement compromised.

Claim authority partially stolen.

Two designated assets lost.

Escalation level increased.

New text appeared.

Central review initiated.

Ji’s face changed.

Leng Yao noticed.

“You know what that means.”

“Yes.”

“What?”

She looked towards the sky.

“There are six regional Chosen in this country.”

Bai Qingyu leaned against her cane.

“And a central one?”

Ji nodded.

“The person who judges us.”

The system displayed a final line.

CENTRAL CHOSEN NOTIFIED.

Far above Shanghai, beyond cloud and ordinary sight, something opened its eyes.

Leng Yao’s black scale mark became hot.

A verdict had already been formed.

He could feel it descending.

Not yet spoken.

Not yet enforced.

But waiting.

For the first time, Heaven was no longer correcting the story around him.

It was preparing a case against him.
